This is an entertaining book in audio form. A story set just after the Jacobite uprisings and during the clearances. A sometimes steamy romance. A low ranking Clan healer, with many secrets, falls into the arms of a besotted Chieftain’s son. A ‘Highlander’ vibe without the time travelling. Thank you to CamCat publishing and NetGalley for the audio ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
Bewitching the Highlander is a great historical romance with the slightest hint of magic. The author clearly did her research; the Scottish backdrop to this story and the place's history was well done and detailed. In terms of the romance, I felt like there was something missing which kept this book from becoming a new favourite, though I do highly recommend it. The romance was fine, but their lack of communication (and the assumptions they made about one another) made me roll my eyes at times. The two characters, Egan and Breena, clearly want each other yet they don’t share that with the other for most of the book.
For those of you who love spice: the sex scenes are more based around feelings rather than physicality and are therefore not the most detailed but I enjoyed them. The emphasis on emotions behind those scenes makes sense for Egan and Breena’s forbidden attraction.
Around the halfway mark I was starting to feel like the story was dragging a little bit, I had no idea where the plot was going because the character’s goals seemed completed, so I was not feeling super invested. However, the story picked back up and the ending was great. The detangling of the secrets and the twist were done very well.
The audiobook was amazing. Moira Quirk’s accent made the story even more compelling while remaining clear and understandable.

Don't be put off by my 3 stars that I rounded up from 2.5. I couldn't have imagined this book, and had some problems following along. This is less about fiction (which I wanted) and more about romance and Sci Fi & Fantasy equally (which I didn't want). I was ready for a good story set in the Scottish Highlands with a little romance and a potion or two. Well folks, the adult fiction is apparently a misunderstood genre by me. The romance scenes were written well, they weren't raunchy, however I was taken aback. I feel there was more fantasy than sci fi: the clans, prisons and such were not as simple as they sound.
This would make a late night TV movie that I would watch several times when it was on, and eventually figure it out. I was reminded of my love for the book -- The Hobbit, with the completely opposite feeling for LOTR. This is audience specific. So, if you love fantasy, the Scottish clans, the Highlander (Adrian Paul) this is for you.
I enjoyed the narrator, she drew me in within 30 seconds. Her diction and level of speech was perfect.
I listened to the audio and gotta say it was pretty great. The female voice was soothing and had a natural Scottish accent, and she did a good job when reading the male lines. The author did a great job writing this story. It has a couple of twists and turns and she did well with the history and historical tones. While it follows a common theme where the female MC is a healer, it did a great job of still being an original story. If you like Scottish men in kilts, the manly Scottish accent, braw men, a bit of danger, detailed writing, and slow burn that turns into hot steam, this is a good read for you. - I received this book for free. This was an interesting romance with an surprising twist at the end that I did not see coming that made the HEA come together! I enjoyed the visual descriptions that helped the times and places come alive. The characters were real and had depth as they dealt with their difficult challenges. The narrator did an excellent voicing of the characters that really added to the characters and the story. I enjoyed the accents that truly helped the setting come alive.!
Ok - this was fantastic. I thought I was going in to a standard highland romance but ended up with a wonderful story, characters that I enjoyed, beautiful writing, and historical relevance! I was so happy with this book. The romance is great, there’s good banter and the characters have good chemistry. I liked them both from the beginning. There’s no cringy romantic pining, no characters doing foolish things at the heavy hand of an author. I even feel like I recognized a lot of historical references to highland history and lore. This was a pleasure to listen to.
On top of that, this audiobook was a gem. The narrator has a lovely accent and provides varying and identifiable voices for each character.
Definitely recommend this audiobook. Especially for Outlander fans. This is more like that: historical and story driven with some great spicy scenes.
I love Scottish romance novels, and this fit that criteria! It follows typical romance stories. It’s fun to listen to. There’s nothing really new in terms of storyline, which makes it just comfortable and relaxing to listen to.
