A Winter In New York by Josie Silver is a winter warmer of a story about Iris Raven and Giovanni Belotti. A tale all about a secret recipe that unexpectedly leads to a love, a family and a life, while joining the past to the future for Iris and Gio.
Three years after the death of her beloved mother Vivien, Iris finds herself at rock bottom. She summons up the courage to leave her terrible ex and head for a new life in New York. Vivien had always told her stories about living there so she felt it would be a good place for a fresh start but still feel close to her. What she doesn’t expect to find so quickly is a job, a place to live and the most wonderful landlord. Bobby and his husband Robin, take her under their wing and become like two big brothers, supporting and helping her settle in.
One day Bobby takes her to a festival in Little Italy and the distinctive door of a gelateria catches her eye. It seems familiar and when she checks her mother’s scrapbook, she finds the photo of a handsome man standing outside the gelataria and the napkin with a gelato recipe written on it. Iris has many memories of making and eating the homemade gelato with her mother and being told it is was a secret recipe. Now she starts to wonder who the man is but more importantly why did he give her mother the secret recipe of his family’s gelato?
This starts of a series of events as she meets the present owners of Belotti’s Gelateria and realises their lives are linked more than she ever knew. Gio is a single dad desperately trying to save the family business since they lost the recipe to their famous vanilla gelato. It turns out she has met Gio before and the consequences of that will now affect their growing friendship. They are both coping with the grief of losing someone close to them and are struggling to find their confidence and trust again. Iris is determined to find out how her mum got the recipe and how her story is connected to the Belottis.
Vivien had taken the secret seriously and Iris is the only person who can help the family but if she revealed what she knew, would it tear the family apart? Iris finds herself slowly being integrated into the family and the attraction between her and Gio grows, but she knows it is a relationship built on lies, secrets, deception and betrayal. The Belotti’s are a typical italian family, passionate, proud and loyal. Sophia was great fun and Bella so sweet. I felt Gio had a lot on his plate and admired his dedication to running the Gelateria and keeping the family traditions.
It was lovely hearing all the tales of her life with her mother and the things they used to get up to. The couple of chapters from Vivien’s POV worked really well and filled in a lot of the blanks. I found some parts repetitive but enjoyed the trip back to the eighties and how the two families were linked together. Originally all Iris was going to do was help the family for her mother but now the lines have become blurred because feelings are involved. Her mother’s past now affects her future. Can Gio overcome the complications between them, Iris find the family she’s always wanted and both find the love they deserve. Overall an enjoyable and romantic story.

As I have previously enjoyed books by this author I was looking forward to reading this one. It was well written and very touching at times but I feel was slightly over long in places. Overall a good Christmas read.

Loved Iris, the Belotti family and the setting of this book so much.
Iris' backstory, leading her to arrive in New York without having a single other person in the world, was so interesting and I really enjoyed getting to know her.
Every member of the Belotti family were fabulous, as were Bobby, Robin and Smirnoff the cat.
A cute, addictive story that will pull at your heartstrings.
I'm now off to find the perfect Gelato... 🥰

Walking into this book felt like walking into some of my favourite late 80’s/early 90’s rom coms - think ‘Bed of Roses’ ‘Frankie & Johnny’ & ‘Only You’ (if you even remotely recognise any of these titles this book is for you’.

Great character building & arcs with a HEA that made my eyes well up a little, the perfect afternoon comfort read.

4 Star Review of A Winter In New York by Josie Silver
Josie Silver is a new author to me and I am shocked that I have not come across this author before. This may have been my first book, but it will not be my last.
Iris has been through a lot with the passing of her mother and finally escaping an abusive relationship. in an effort to restart her life she moves to New York. However, she isn’t prepared for all that New York city entails and when she comes across a Gelateria shop, that looks familiar to a photo she has from her late mother, in Little Italy, she is intrigued.
Meeting Gio, she finds out that the family Gelato maker is in a coma and is the only one who knows the recipe that has made them such a success. This is where it gets complicated when Iris realises that both gelato’s are the same. How can this be?
What happens when secrets are revealed? Will Iris and Gio’s blossoming relationship survive?
One click and find out. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

A chance conversation in a bookshop and a secret gelato recipe are life changers for Iris..
This is a tense story of family,
decision making, and new beginnings.
I could not put this book down.
I enjoyed reading it immensely.

I really enjoyed the other Josie Silver book I read, but I’m sorry to say this book just did not pull me in. The first encounter between Iris and Gio made me cringe and I just thought how does she dig herself out of that. The main theme of the book is history between her mum and Gio’s family and I understood the complications it brought but couldn’t really understand the decision she made at first. I read about 20% then stopped hoping if I came back to it another time it would pull me in, unfortunately it didn’t and I ended up jumping to near the end. I did like how the story ended, but the ending also made me wonder what all the big family fuss was about.

Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.

I enjoyed reading this book.

Iris leaves behind her bad relationship and goes to New York to start again.

She is still trying to overcome her grief and never thought that being there would bring her closer to her mother.

In New York she realises that both her mothers past and her own future is linked, that too by a secret family recipe for Vanilla ice cream.

I recommend this book.

Iris has run to New York, away from the troubles in her life and towards her late mother's happiest memories. She's living a deliberately quiet existence until she recognises an ice cream shop from one of her mother's old photographs, and that one moment opens her up to a whole new array of friendships, fulfilment and love.
This is a wonderfully written, just-one-more-chapter addictive joy of a novel. Iris might have had her spirit bent by past events, but she's not broken and her voice is sharp, honest and humorous. Her witty interactions with Bobby and particularly Gio are delightful. It's a winter romance, and also so much more, encompassing the full range of emotions from laughter to tears as it deals with the sensitive subjects of grief, emotional abuse, love, loss and family loyalty. All of the characters are fully rounded and distinctive, even Smirnoff the cat. And if you're not craving gelato by a third of the way through, you will be by the end.

This story had everything, it even made me cry! A girl meets boy story with complications and an uncertain outcome. I liked the fact that it wasn’t too predictable and I enjoyed the parts about her mum which were set in the past. I’d definitely recommend this, an easy read that you keep picking up till it’s gone. Thank you #netgalley

What a beautiful hug of a book that made me want to fly out to New York in the snow. I loved the story of a woman trying to start afresh after a controlling relationship and the loss of her mother and a chance discover of an ice cream shop opens up secrets from her past and a long lost love affair but those secrets and a chance one off line could derail her new life and break her heart. Loved it!!

This love story wasn't just a book; it was an experience that swept me off my feet and left me utterly breathless. From the very first page, it wrapped its words around my heart and didn't let go. The characters weren't just ink on paper; they were living, breathing souls that I laughed and cried with. Their journey wasn't just a story; it was a rollercoaster of emotions that tugged at my very core.

I found myself completely lost in the genuine, heartwarming tale of second chances and the unyielding power of love. Every word was a brushstroke painting the most beautiful picture of resilience and hope. The way they met, the way they loved—it was all so exquisitely crafted that I felt like I was right there beside them, experiencing every moment, every touch, and every tear.

This novel didn't just fill my heart; it overflowed it with an abundance of joy, passion, and an overwhelming sense of wonder. It was more than just a delightful read; it was a masterpiece that left me in awe. If words could truly express the magic it holds, every reader would be enchanted just as I was. It's not just a book; it's a treasure trove of emotions waiting to be discovered, and I can't recommend it enough.

What a fantastic story - I thought it was going to be a classic love story but it was so much more!

Iris has fled to New York in the hope of embracing some of the love, life and laughter that her lovely mum shared with her. She is still grieving and has escaped the evil clutches of a manipulative ex-boyfriend. When she stumbles across a familiar looking door from her mums past, she stumbles into a whole family life. However she has secrets she must keep as they could blow the family apart. As time goes on and she falls more in love with the family, the harder it is to keep those secrets. Can she figure it out before she loses everything?

A fantastic book from start to finish. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

I always love a Josie Silver book so when I saw this was being released I jumped at the chance to read it and it did not disappoint. Iris is in New York escaping her life in England for many different reasons but then she stumbles across Belotti's gelateria, she knows she has seen this place before but she isn't sure where until she finds a scrapbook of her mum's and it all become clearer.
This book is about finding yourself after different occasions have knocked you down, its about making your own family and basically is a really good read

I typically avoid books centered around deceit in the main plot, but in this case, the author has done an incredible job. I became deeply invested in Gio and the entire family, including Bobby and Robin. As for Adam, he can certainly go eat glass. While I've never been to New York, visiting the city is a dream of mine, and I must say, the book made it sound truly magical, making me eager to visit soon. I genuinely adored the book, and the writing style is simply outstanding. A must-read for the Christmas season!

My favourite parts of this were the setting - New York at Christmas - and the characters. Although weirdly I enjoyed the supporting cast more including flamboyant Bobby, the fiercely loyal and passionate Belotti family and cute cat Smirnoff than main characters Iris and Gio. In books I love coming across a new saying or life affirmation that really resonates and Sophia saying: "everyone has baggage.....but isn't that kind of the point of love, that you help each other carry the bags" was one such example in this. But, on the flip side, the story was a little slow and drawn out with large parts fairly similiar around Iris' guilt and past. So a nice read but I was expecting more having absolutely loved the author's previous book 'One Night on the Island'.

I know that I spend quite a bit of time disparaging romance novels. Ironically, I really enjoy romance movies and TV shows. There are only a couple of authors who write contemporary romance that give me the same feels as the romance movies I enjoy, as opposed to the majority that just make me cringe. These two are Paige Toon and Josie Silver, both from the UK. I’ve read each and all of the books written by these two authors.

A Winter in New York is the latest release by Josie Silver and it’s a seasonal story, so my love of Christmas is addressed as well within it. This one is all about starting over, grieving for a parent, finding yourself again after being lost in a toxic and harmful relationship, new friends, food, wine, more food, and gelato, so much gelato. And, of course, a new love. But I promise, it’s not cringey and I know I’m skating close to being hypocritical here but what can I say…Josie Silver just gives me that romance movie feeling that I only ever get from good, British movies like Love Actually. So maybe that’s why I only like British authors who write romance? Food for thought…

I’m a bit of a book snob, I know, but I just can’t resist the combination of love and food, even if it does seem in direct contradiction to my ‘I don’t like romance novels’ stance. It’s my weakness, foodie fiction where people fall in love over pasta, or, in this case, gelato. Anyway, needless to say, I recommend this one for some festive seasonal reading.
