After leaving her boyfriend in the UK, Iris finds herself packing up and following her mum's story to New York. She finds a job and new best friend in Bobby, and whilst out with him at a food festival, she discovers a place that looks memorable from her mum's photos. What follows is the story of Iris rediscovering her mum's life, and her relationship with gelato shop owner Gio and his family.
A book that plays with your emotions - a story of love, loss, grief, abusive relationships, single parents. Beautiful characters, just let down slightly for me by their inability to talk to each other openly!
A Winter In New York follows Iris as she moves to New York as she tries to start again. It's a great story, with great characters. I highly recommend it!
A brilliant read and one I really enjoyed. The characters are loveable and varied, the plot is one that is engaging and medium paced. I found myself completely drawn into the story and enjoyed the writing style.
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Iris decides to follow her moms story and move to New York leaving her past behind her. That is until she is wandering the streets and realises that she has stumbled on a gelateria that looks familiar. Gio works in the gelateria and is in the middle of a crisis. Iris discovers she has the answer to his crisis but she can’t just give him the answers he needs. Can Iris let go of her past and move forwards helping Gio along the way?
I loved this festive tale set in New York. A great story with a fabulous set of characters including the obligatory gay best friends and the loud but welcoming Italian family. All sounds a bit clichéd but actually is a very well written and engaging story. Loved the flashbacks to the 1980's that really gave depth to the story.
This is not just a romantic story, this is about family, loss, coercive control and finding your own feet. All of this is helped along by music, food, friendship and love. I really would love to taste that gelato and to be invited for a meal with the family. Hell, I don’t even like limoncello and now I’m craving it. It’s also a great look at life in New York for those of us that have never been and I enjoyed all the film references.
Gelato in New York, a great mix of intrigue and romance, where the romance nearly gets lost. Not a book where you can judge the outcome at the beginning you have to read it all the way through. the tow man characters Iris and Gio are wonderfully portrayed. Why gelato, well that is the recipe to the success of the story.
Josie silver does it again. What a brilliant book. Possibly my favourite of Josie’s so far. 10/10 as always.
This is going to be the holiday read of the season!! Honestly it isn't just a love story it's a woman's journey of her grief and leaving an abusive past behind, finding herself alone on the world and starting over.
I loved all the characters, Iris is a superb protagonist. I also loved the side characters this definitely bought the family theme to life and made it feel so so real.
I can't even put my feelings into words the whole book was just cute!!! It was foodie, wintery, romantic, but also sad and heartbreaking too. It definitely gives all the feels!!!
Huge thank you to Netgalley & the publisher for the E - ARC.
This had me hooked from the offset, I couldn’t put it down and read it over 2 days! Set in NYC we follow Iris as she is starting a new life following the loss of her mother and also a nice fresh start leaving old wounds behind.
Although I couldn’t really warm to Iris during the first half of the book, there was a point later on where I had a little tear, it was quite emotional and I think that was the turning point for me, I really felt for her!
Josie Silver has really captured it all in one book, it’s hard to review without revealing too much but what I will say is it encompasses, love, loss, secrets and family!
Highly recommended!
A lovely story about love and friendship, starting over and living your dreams. Well written and enjoyable festive read.
Iris embarks on a journey of self-discovery and healing as she leaves behind her past heartbreak and strives to restart her culinary career in the city that never sleeps. The story takes a charming twist when Iris stumbles upon a gelateria that feels strangely familiar and meets Gio, a charismatic man with a personal crisis of his own.
As Iris and Gio's paths cross, fate intervenes, and Iris becomes the key to solving Gio's dilemma, creating a unique bond between them. However, there's a catch—she can't reveal the solution to his problem. This delightful tale explores themes of love, letting go of the past, and taking chances on new beginnings.
A captivating blend of romance, personal growth, and delicious culinary experiences.
A lovely story on romance and friendship.
Iris moves to New York after the death of her Mother and the end of an abusive relationship, she wants to relive the happy times her mother had in New York during her singing career and before she had Iris and become a single parent and Iris had no other relatives.
Iris comes across a gelato shop which she had seen in one of her mothers old photos and so the story begins.
Loved this story and the characters, definitively recommend.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC and I give my honest review.
Book Review 📚
A Winter in New York by Josie Silver - 4.5/5 ⭐
I'll be honest - these small town, romance story's don't really do it for me at all. They're all quite predictable and similar to so many other stories. But, A Winter in New York was actually amazing. I loved the entire set out for the plot, it's more a second chance type of plot where the MC happens to find love along the way.
Silver managed to hook me with the cover alone - yes I judge a book by its cover! So when I got accepted I was a little thrown that I'd even choose to read it as the cover was very "romance-y". But I really was pleasantly surprised. Ok, yes, there was romance but it wasn't the main theme to the book. I feel like the second chance, overcoming death and trying to do better for yourself, was definitely more the theme here. I was so routing for our FMC the whole way, there was so much pain to her story.
The writing was pretty amazing as well. It's not full on and it's not boring. I didn't want to stop reading until I was content with the happy ending our FMC needed. I loved every second of it. The description of New York was also phenomenal, one place we all want to imagine at Christmas time and Silver described it beautifully.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin for allowing me to read this ARC - this is an HONEST review from my own personal opinion.
This was an absolute dream to read. I was totally invested in the characters and the author really managed to create a corner of New York that felt like a cozy little community amongst the bright lights.
The relationships were inspired, the characters well put together and realistic, making you totally invest yourself in the plot.
I laughed and cried my way through, ending up feeling the greatest sense of satisfaction. An absolute winter treat to cuddle up with!
This was such a lovely book to read. It pulled on my heartstrings and flowed so well. At one point I thought, I have a while to go, what can happen but it so was well written there definitely was more to the story and kept me page turning.
I want a best friend like Bobby!
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
A beautiful love story set in new York. I fell in love with the characters even the little cat and I'm not an animal lover. I got all the lovely feelings from this book from it been so real and believable 🥰 Josie Silver is a great author
Love a Josie Silver book. Always romantic, realistic and heart wrenching. Fulfilled every wish. Fabulous characters and storyline. Highly recommended. Thanks to netgalley and the publishers and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion
Wow!!! What a truly beautiful wonderful read!! The perfect book to curl up to in the winter months!! I truly savoured every page of this novel from the very first page to the very last!! Captivating, charming and caused a smile and yes even a tear or two! Highly unusual for me………
This is the story of Iris, who comes to New York from England to start a new life after escaping a controlling relationship which nearly had her scuppered. As she starts to find her strength and inspiration as a chef and to find herself again through her grief and her new friends, this inspired story sensitively shows the journey of discovery and awakening through relationships and family. Through a new job as a noodle chef which includes a small flat and friends and a strange cat, she can start again.
Totally loved this book end to end!! Full 5 stars from me, brilliant writing as always from Josie Silver who never fails to surprise me with her published work.
I am now wanting to plan my next trip to New York to visit all the places here. Loved the 80’s nostalgia, the gelato and the love.
The best most perfect book for all this winter!!
Thank you NetGalley and Dell publishers for the early read, so very much appreciated!!!!
I initially thought this was a Christmas story but more than a year was captured in this very well written book and it was packed full of emotion, love, threat, friendship and so much more, Iris and Gio have both found the love of their life and it was beautiful
