After enduring a disturbing relationship with the wrong person, Iris takes charge of her own future and ventures to New York where she knows her late mother was at her happiest. Seeking comfort in walking the same streets as her mother, Iris stumbles across a gelato place which she instantly recognises from a photograph. As she stumbles in, she has no idea how complicated her life is about to become, particularly when she meets Gio who seems familiar somehow.
This book is incredibly romantic and has the idyllic setting of New York at Christmas. I really enjoyed how Josie Silver made Iris come across and being able to understand how inadequate she felt at times was so realistic and relatable to many people.
I adored Jodie Silver’s previous books and this one was no exception-you are in for a treat!

Ah, the romantic pen of Josie Silver has been at it again!
This time it's Iris and Gio's story, with snapshots of her mother's past sprinkled into the New York winter mix.
I loved the beginning, setting the scene and introducing two characters who, of course, are excellent at quick wit and comebacks; you only hope they meet again.
With it's early flashback to Iris' mum's story, the reader has the enviable position of knowing more about the main character's mother than she does, and what led to that photograph and scrap of a napkin being in her beloved scrapbook.
The revelations come thick and fast once Iris spends her days at the Belotti ice cream parlour.
(If you happen to love ice cream this book will also make your mouth water for the real deal Italian vanilla variety).
The Belotti family, which Iris comes to know and love, are a devoted, noisy, emotional, all-encompassing, perfect Italian brood who take her to their hearts as they see Gio opening up after tragedy in his past.
The huge good fortune of an accidental landlord, who is adorable and very wealthy and happens to live upstairs, adds a good dose of humour and friendship along the way.
There is a darker element of a previous controlling relationship which threatens to unravel the growing happiness and Iris' newfound belief in herself. Although not a main part of the story, I found the thoughts and frailties Iris has while recovering from the experience, to be very touching and made you want to wrap her up in a large hug - just like the Belottis.
A Winter in New York has all the ingredients of a twinkling holiday read which lifts your spirits and makes you smile and have a tear at times. Families hey!
Thank you again for the feelgoods, Ms Silver - another beautifully written romance.

This is a captivating story; one of those difficult to put down, as we follow Iris setting out on a new life as she comes to terms with loss and trauma in her life. But is this new environment she stumbles across really what she needs, wants or deserves? We are guessing to the end! The characters are so clearly defined, it is easy to imagine you are there in the streets of New York with them. An easy and enjoyable read.

A captivating, heartwarming story about love, loss, family and redemption, all set in Italian New York and features a looot of gelato 🍦

Since Iris's mother passed and escaping an abusive relationship, Iris escapes to New York. Here, she wants to see all the places her mother once walked and loved.

Walking past a gelato store, she realises it looks exactly like one of her mothers photos. Venturing inside, she meets an Italian man who runs the shop, Gio.

When Iris realises she knows the family's secret gelato recipe, passed down from her mother - she tries to help Gio recreate it, without him catching on that she knows the recipe.

With secrets untold which threaten to ruin her new life and her new love, Iris battles with herself to either tell Geo or keep it to herself, which might end up being the end for their love story.

Get the tissues ready for the last 10%, it's an emotional redemption!

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for this ARC, I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Josie Silver’s writing and storylines are always intriguing and feel so real and this one is no different.

I adored Gio as a character. He felt so real and pure; with his soft soul for his family and the people he loves but also having a hard exterior as he tries to stay tough figuring out a lost family recipe and looking after his young daughter by himself as a widower.

The romance between Geo and Iris felt so natural and I’m glad we get a man who doesn’t give up on what he wants. It felt natural and authentic

4/5 stars

Let me just preface this by saying I will be giving a full review on this but I just have to say how excited I am for this one! I cannot say enough good things any Josie Silver One Day On December changed my life. Her follow up Abt the girl stuck out on the wilderness was really good as well. I swear every time she says she has a new book coming out I get a burst of excitement. Our readers love her. I love her. This will definitely be a book club pick that goes without saying and I can't wait to read this beautiful book az well and thrilled we are getting a NEW YORK. Love story this time around.

Chef Iris is an orphan. Devastated by the untimely death of her vivacious mother she got into an abusive relationship with Adam but finally managed to extricate herself. She fled England and flew to New York with just one suitcase and her trusty gelato machine. Iris' mother had a secret recipe for vanilla gelato, one which must never be shared with anyone, written only on a napkin which Iris treasures, her mother's gelato was the background to all her childhood memories, the ultimate celebratory food, but also what she ate when she was sad.

After escaping from Adam's clutches Iris finds it hard to meet people or socialise, her only friends are Robin and Bobby, her boss and landlords who live upstairs above the noodle bar where she now works six days a week. On a rare day out with Bobby enjoying a local food festival, Iris notices an unusual painted glass door to Belotti's Italian Gelateria, one that is identical to a picture her mother treasured of a young man standing outside that same door. It turns out that Belotti's is famous for its vanilla gelato, a secret family recipe known only to two people at any one time, but tragedy has struck and the only family member alive who knows the recipe has had a stroke and lost his memory. Iris gets talking to the latest generation of Belotti's who work in the Gelateria, Gio, a young widower single father, and his sister Sophia, Gio is trying to recreate the recipe whilst Sophia and her sisters are urging him to diversify, at least until their father Santo recovers enough to recall the recipe. Once she tastes a mouthful of the last precious batch of gelato, Iris realises that she has their secret family recipe - but how did her mother come to have the napkin and how can Iris help the family without revealing that Santo must have betrayed the family by sharing the recipe with her?

As romance blossoms between Iris and Gio she feels trapped by the lies she has told him about her ex and about her mother's relationship with Santo and his brother Felipe, but most of all about having the secret family recipe, how can he ever forgive her?

I was invited to read this book and I hesitated because it felt a bit too sickly sweet for me, I succumbed but I was right in my first assessment. I spent most of the time reading this book internally shouting at Iris to just sit down with Gio and tell him the truth, at least about Adam, instead she gets mired deeper and deeper, it was frustrating and ultimately I felt the drama was manufactured. It was a pleasant enough romance but not for me.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I have loved all of Josie Silver's previous novels so jumped at the chance to receive an ARC through NetGalley and Penguin Random House and it didn't disappoint.

A brilliant cast of characters: you believed in them, their relationships and motivations, and whilst sometimes finding their decisions and actions frustrating they were understandable and in keeping with their history and mental viewpoint.

Word of warning - read the last 90% with a pack of tissues nearby - but it is perfect as it plays out.

I was pleasantly surprised at how festive I found this story considering it is set over a 3 month period and would definitely recommend it as a great Christmas read.

My only reservation - which knocked this to a 4* rather than 5* rating for me was the mental dialog of the main character which was always foreseeing an unhappy outcome to her situation had me constantly unsettled, waiting for the hammer to fall, before the ultimate HEA.

Iris decides to move to New York to restart her life. She’d watched movies set in New York with her mum, and the place seemed a lot bigger in real life.
She’d lost her mum a few years ago, and after going through her old scrapbooks and photo albums, it seemed a good place to start a new life.
As a chef, she drops on a job at a noodle bar, with accommodation above. Bobby, a brilliant character, is the owner and they become instant friends.
Bobby takes Iris to a street fair in Little Italy where they wander through tasting wonderful food as they go. Iris notices a beautifully hand painted door and feels she recognises it from one of her mum’s old photos. It’s an ice-cream shop and she decides to return the following day to check it out. Handsome Gio is behind the counter when she returns. He explains that there is no gelato as his uncle Santos has been taken ill and can’t remember the recipe. It is a secret recipe, known only by two family members at a time. Unfortunately it seems that Santos is currently the only one. The gelato is always made fresh each day but Gio lets Iris taste a little he has in the freezer. When she tastes the gelato it is identical to one her mum used to make for her. Her mum always made a special ice-cream when they had a movie night. Iris once again goes through her mum’s scrapbooks and comes across a recipe hastily written on a napkin, could this be connected to Gio’s family?
What follows is a gorgeous heart-warming story that this author creates so brilliantly. I just got lost in reading it. All the emotions. Happy, sad, funny and really heart wrenching at times. I loved it!
Iris and Gio were the main feature, but a fabulous supporting cast of family and friends.
Another one to top the book charts without a doubt.
Thanks to Penguin and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy in which I give my honest opinion.
Will post to blog on publication day.

What a cracker of a story. I absolutely loved it.
Iris has left London in a hurry after escaping a very unpleasant, toxic relationship.

A couple of months later, a chance meeting in a bookshop cements her new life as she blurts out that her ex is dead to a stranger grabbing the book she was going for on the shelf.

Iris is building a new life for herself and is slowly venturing out from the safety of her flat with Bobby, her adorable landlord/new best friend when she sees a shop doorway that triggers a long forgotten memory…

Iris has seen this door before… in a photo belonging to her beloved, late mother.

What follows is a tale of coincidence, new friendships, old relationships and the discovering of some parts of her mother’s past that help her make sense of things.

It’s a beautifully written, funny, sexy, glorious story, occasionally spanning two timelines.

The characters are so vibrant and joyful - I’ll be dreaming of Gio for weeks! - and the scenes so descriptively drawn that I imagined myself there, on one of those stools, sipping coffee and dipping my neon spoon into a bowl of vanilla gelato.

Old promises, secrets and loyalties weave a magical story.

If I have one criticism it would be that I wanted a bit more of the back story of Adam but that was only to understand more of Iris’s story.

It’s a sure fire hit as far as I’m concerned, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Another hit from Josie Silver! This one follows the story of Iris who has moved to New York after leaving a toxic relationship and suffering a family bereavement. While she tries to rebuild her life and confidence she encounters the Belotti family who own a local gelato shop, themselves struggling with family issues and the loss of their secret gelato recipe. But Iris has a secret connection that could jeopardise the relationships she’s building…
Josie Silver has such a wonderful knack for storytelling that really pulls you in and this is no exception!

I’ve really loved all of Josie Silver’s books so far, but this is my favourite. It’s lovely. I love the Italian/New York setting, I love the characters. I want to be part of the Belotti family.

Filled with secrets, insecurity, flashes from the past, fantastic chemistry between Iris and Gio, and just so readable. I devoured this.

A really feel good romance, filled with intrigue and mystery as well. Couldn’t ask for more.

I loved this book. A romance with a hidden mystery around the main characters. It has wonderful descriptions of New York and the characters are believable and interesting. This would make a wonderful summer holiday read.

Josie Silver has a knack of writing great stories that pick you up at the first word and give you a rollercoaster ride of emotions right through to the last word. I always eagerly await a new book from Josie Silver, after loving all of her previous books and characters, and this one is no exception. Having visited New York a few years ago, and had the most delicious Vodka pizza with sweet potato fries in Little Italy a few years ago, this book took me right back to that holiday - apart from regretting that I did not have any gelato there………☹️
This book follows Iris, a Londoner now living in New York after fleeing an abusive relationship and a bereavement. As she settles into her new life, she becomes entangled in the Belotti family’s life - local gelato shop owners - as they struggle with family illness and the loss of their secret gelato recipe. Iris is determined to help them rediscover the recipe, but she is hiding a secret, one that could destroy her budding relationship with Gio Belotti before it’s even begun…….. fabulous ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from NetGalley. I was really excited to read a new novel by Josie Silver, and this did not disappoint. A Winter In New York was a lovely, engaging read with an excellent cast of characters. Silver dealt with difficult themes well, and her writing made me miss New York a lot.

Iris is in the magnificent city of New York. After leaving behind her life in England she finds herself in a showdown in a bookshop with a stranger over a particular book. Harsh words are spoken and she leaves the store minus the book.

Fast forward a few months and Iris is with her boss/landlord/friend Bobby when she sees a familiar door. A beautiful ornate door that she recognises from an old photograph. The door belongs to a family run gelateria and when she visits she meets Gio, who she feels she’s met before. They talk and it turns out his father who runs the business is ill and can’t remember the recipe for their famous vanilla gelato. Being the only one at that point who knows the recipe, chef Iris offers to help figure out the recipe. But as time goes on and the pair get to know each other, secrets come to light that Iris can’t share as it will risk so much, not just for Gio but the whole Belotti family.

This book had me from the start. I love Iris, I love Gio and his whole family, they sound like such a force. The book was full of emotion and difficulties to be overcome with some brilliant characters and the odd twist too. I’m only wishing I knew the famous gelato recipe. As with every book I’ve read by this author it was a pleasure to read, so easy to get into and so hard to put down.

Will be a great read for Christmas and with it being released in October it’ll be the perfect festive read.
