Ice cream at Christmas? Sounds strange, but after reading A Winter in New York I'm fully on board...
This light-hearted read has a fun premise, relatable/lovable characters, and a great setting - New York City at Christmas! The story revolves around Iris and Gio, both from very different backgrounds, but both dealing with their respective dysfunctional families. The book went deeper into these issues than I'd expect, but I enjoyed reading about it more than I expected. I feel like Christmas contains a lot of pathos anyway, and this books captured that bittersweet feeling well. I especially loved all the foodie descriptions!
A lovely read that works for the holidays - I'll definitely be revisiting this and recommending it next year!
4.5 stars
What a beautiful, lovely, & engaging story! I did not want to put this down, and though it looked like a train wreck waiting to happen at times (the secrets, the lies, the half-truths could have made this a complete mess if not a despicable plot & heroine/protagonist), but it all happened organically in the tale, and I was nodding along to the reasoning, even if it felt flawed at times, because it was so very human, too.
This is one book that swept me in and took me along with its tides, in the midst of a magical winter in New York, in the arms and bosom of a lovely family everyone would kill to have, with people with such hearts of gold, yet also people who are intensely flawed and real, too.
Iris as the heroine had my heart wrenching with hers many a time; Gio as the hero had me falling helplessly in love with him; the Belottis were the dream family I wish could've been mine in any lifetime; Bobby & Robin the older siblings in your corner 200% of the time. The only ones that irked me were Vivien & Santo, for the things they've done and then keep on doing, especially to Iris.
All in all, the ending felt a little rushed - I would've preferred it to happen with a slower pace and with a bit 'more' than just the action taking place... But all in all, the entire ride that was this book was just perfect. Lovely, lovely story. Gonna be on the lookout for more Josie Silver now, for sure!

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC, in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
I really enjoyed A Winter in New York, with the city providing a magical backdrop to the story.
It’s a heartwarming, uplifting read, beautifully written with a fabulous cast of characters. A brilliant, entertaining festive read.
First time reading a book from Josie and it won’t be my last! Absolutely adored every second of this book from start to finish and it was the perfect Christmassy read. It’s so much more then romance it talks about family and loss and grief and I think Josie did a fantastic job with this book.
A wonderful wintery Romance set in New York.
This was well written and found it hard to put it down, once I started reading it. The characters were extremely believable.
The story is written around the hustle and bustle of a Gelateria. Definitely got me wanting to try the ice cream. Iris arrives in New York, trying to put the past behind her. However, it doesn’t seem that she can.
A beautiful story of love, hope and dreams. Congratulations Josie Silver on a fantastic novel. I highly recommend you put this on your TBR list. You will not be disappointed.
I was really excited to start reading this but it wasn't really what I expected it to be.
From the outset, I just didn't get those festive vibes that I was looking for.
While the plot sounded somewhat interesting and I did quite like the chemistry between the two main characters, the amount of lying and miscommunication really soured this for me.
I really don't like the miscommunication trope at all and this had way too much of it.
You're also just waiting for the secret to be revealed and expecting the third act breakup to come (which it does).
I did enjoy Josie Silver's writing, as always and do look forward to what she does next. But this wasn't my favourite by her.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I'm a big fan of Josie Silver and this book did not disappoint. Heartfelt and funny, at times I wanted to reach in and shake some sense into Iris, other times I was laughing or crying with her. Love the development of her relationship with Gio and his big, loud Italian family. 10/10 would recommend

If these themes/tropes appeal to you, I suggest you pick this one up. Josie Silver creates characters to get lost in, that keep you entertained from cover to cover. A highly entertaining and heart-warming read.

I just love Josie Silver and her Christmas books with all my heart and soul! One Day in December is one of my all time favourite romances and i was so excited to read this one.And i was not disappointed at all! It had everything i needed - NYC winter setting, a bit of mystery, heartwarming moments, heartbreaking moments, great chemistry between our main characters and Josie Silver’s signature gorgeous prose. The perfect holiday book to curl up with!
A really cosy, easy to read book perfect for the winter months. It didn't give me particularly Christmassy vibes but I devoured it in a couple of days and really enjoyed it.
I'm sorry to say that I didn't particularly enjoy A Winter In New York. I really wanted to, sounded like something I'd enjoy (Christmas in New York, sounds idyllic) but I just couldn't really get into the story and I didn't warm to the characters. The whole abusive relationship was dealt with quite well, the aftermath of what poor Iris went through was quite sad and I did enjoy the ending but over all, unfortunately this wasn't for me.
What a start to 2024 reads!
🍦Well firstly do yourself a favour & make sure vanilla ice cream handy!
🌟Silver keeps getting better and better with each book! This one opens with two bookworms fighting over the last copy in a bookshop ...book lover catnip.
🌟I adored the entire cast (well apart from Adam... He can "eat glass"). I wouldn't like an invite to a Belloti family Christmas.
🌟 Gio is totally swoonworthy 😍😍😍
🌟 The flashback scenes totally squished my heart & helped makes sense of the present.
🌟 It gave me all the feels from warm fuzzy ones, fear, tears, tears you name it... I had it!
Iris is swimming in a web of ill-fated lies, can she make it out & find a path back to Gio? ...you have to read it to find out!
PLEASE hit me with your swoonworthy romance recs, whilst I not so patiently wait for Silvers next book?!
I'm a sucker for a New York setting and this book had that in spades and as a bonus references to some of my favourite New York set films too! So it certainly started off well but then I felt that those fleeting glimpses of New York were what I looked forward to reading rather than following the story. I know romances are famed for being predictable but this one I knew how it would play out very early on and also I know romance happens quickly but the one in this story seemed to have super quick with not much lead up. The protagonist had various secrets she was holding onto but I felt they were held onto the last gasp for the sake of the story rather than unveiling at a natural point (and she had plenty chances to!) Thankfully the ending pulled everything together and was a satisfying conclusion but the middle of the story just seemed to drag on. I had hoped this book would get me into the cosy wintery mood and kick off my festive reads with a bang but it was not meant to be.
Josie Silver is a firm favourite of mine 🤍
I loved this story and felt invested in the couples relationship.
The ice cream shop setting was adorable. I just wish it was a bit more Wintery. I feel it would have made a better summer based story. And the lie was HUGE and resolved very quickly without much of a struggle.
A basically spent a day swooning over this book and power reading it - so good. Iris has run away to New York from a toxic relationship, she lives a pretty closed off life until she meets Gio and his family. They take her in to their gelateria and she makes real connections and finds herself falling for the wholly unsuitable Gio.
The drama in this. Phew. I’m usually most interested in a romantic story line and mildly enjoy anything else going on but I could not stop turning the page to find out how Iris was going to get out of the messiest of situations. My heart broke for her with how complicated and hopeless it seemed at different points. I loved Gio - not happy that both the US and UK covers seems to have done him dirty. My favourite awww moment was when baby Iris had actually met 5 year old Gio, it just seemed like fate ❤️
What to expect:
- meet cute
- single dad
- found family
- secret romance
- bit of dual timeline
Oh my heart, this was a superb book!
The writing is engaging, the story of the family ice cream recipe & all the characters who were interlinked from the past.
Just a wonderful read.
Thank you to netgalley for the book.
I requested this booked I wanted a festive christmassy read, however. I didn’t feel this had that festive feeling. There wasn't much about winter in it until the end! I had never read anything by this author before so did not know what to expect.
I also struggled with the whole concept of the "lies" and why Iris would not have explained herself and numerous opportunities. I also didn't feel the lies were so bad she couldn't come clean. It just didn't make sense to me.
I also didn't really get the ex part. As someone who has been in a similar situation in real life it didn't seem particularly believable.
I did enjoy the book and although. I wasn't at the stage wjere I felt I couldnt put it down t I still looked forward to reading in an evening.
I love this book! It was classic Josie silver filled with Christmas magic. The characters were engaging and the plot was never slow. 2 thumbs up!
As a huge Josie Silver fan, I had very high hopes for her newest release, especially as it was yet another wintery / festive romance.
Unfortunately from the very beginning I really did not like the female main character Iris. It’s not a spoiler to say that her ‘meet-cute’ with the male love interest is all based around a pretty serious lie, and that put me off her immediately. There were several opportunities for her to come clean, which she did not take. I was praying for a miraculous explanation at the end, and it did kind of placate my hatred a little but sadly I still didn’t like her very much at all.
Gio on the other hand.. 🥵 give me an Italian-American family-oriented guy with daddy vibes any day 👏🏻👏🏻 I absolutely adored Gio’s character and found his interactions with everyone else a joy to read. I much preferred his back story and familial situation, and found his parts of the book much more enjoyable.
The book didn’t feel as wintery as I’d hoped.. It’s largely set in a gelateria, and ice cream doesn’t scream winter to me? Also the majority is actually set in autumn until the very end 😄 I liked parts of the story with trying to find the family’s perfect gelato recipe, but found some parts a bit far-fetched in terms of Iris’ connection to the family.
I did have a tiny cry at the end - there was a very emotional moment regarding grief of a parent and cancer!
Overall it was an enjoyable read, I just wish I liked Iris more as that would’ve pushed up the rating! Some people may like her more though or find her more relatable, but she wasn’t my cup of tea and I think Gio deserved better 😄
I loved this book, it gave me all the feels, I laughed and cried and everything inbetween. The characters are all brilliant and I loved getting to know Gio’s family. The chapters from the past were a great addition to the story too. 100% recommend this read.
