3.25/5 stars! This is the first book in Linsey Hall's "Charming Cove." Its a PNR full of witchy magic. It was fun but not unique. I just didn't believe their story. It was a cute little romcom with magical elements; it works for spooky season.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
I wanted to love this but unfortunately it fell around a “I kinda like this but don’t know if I would continue with the series”. The romance in this was okay but it didn’t develop how I wanted it to but that’s okay, that’s a me problem! It was quite with likeable main characters.
Ever want to just love a book so much but no matter what you do, you cant seem to get into it. This book had so much that I love but it just fell flat for me. I am wondering if the other books get better as it goes on, maybe I could try reading it again with a more clear head. But I do not know if that would change it.
I enjoyed this book but it was a bit of a disappointment as I was expecting a five star read. I liked the characters but felt like they could have had a bit more about them. I also found that the story lacked any uniqueness. That being said it was still enjoyable.
Cozy and lighthearted read. I like the age gap romance but I wish they were a little bit older. This also read a little bit more like YA than adult. The pace was a little slow and I wish there was more character development.
Funny, witchy, fast read. Funny and romantic. Small town charm.
Perfect for autumn. Highly recommend. 4/5 stars
The cover of this book drew me in immediately even before I knew what it was about. The story was different than what I expected, but I thought the romance was really cute.
3/5 Stars
This was just an average read. I thought the romance was cute but I wanted more from it. It was an easy, quick, and cozy read with some magic sprinkled in between. I will say it seems to read younger than I thought it would, it seemed more young adult than it did adult. Like I said it was a fun time and would for sure read more of this authors book for some cozy vibes.
BO-RING! I almost fell asleep reading this book so that says a lot about my opinion on it. The 2 main characters had exactly ZERO chemistry with one another, none, nothing! And of course the main character turns out to be some kind of super powerful unique witch or whatever. How original... 2 stars
First off the cover is absolutely stunning and drew me right into this book. I liked the overall theme of this with having to compete to earn something to same your family and your home; I was maybe hoping for more thrilling adventures although the cave definitely put in the high stakes. I also love anything with multiple POVs because I love seeing the difference in the characters thoughts and voices throughout and gaining insight. I get the FMC's feelings on being an outsider but I do think it was more YA than I expected in some parts with the way she interacted with other contestants feeling high-school drama ish. This was very fast paced with the challenges not lasting very long; I did absolutely love the descriptions of the third one and the descriptions of the animals within the story. This type of story reminds me of watching Hallmark type movies because of the two love interests competing; one being a small town girl the other a rich businessman who is aiming to get rid of something, who end up intertwined, it makes it very nostalgic and heartwarming. I liked the romance between the MC's with the history and the rivalry and some of the tension, some parts may have been a little rushed with them going from competitors to where they ended up, I'd of liked more of the middle part of them. I am glad to see this is book one of a series because I do think there were some more things I need to know after the ending and I am intrigued.
I loved how relevant, modern, and fun this book was. At first I was drawn in by the title and was not really sure what to expect but as soon as I started reading it pulled me in. Great read if you are looking for something fun and easy to break up reality with!
Cozy fantasy book with rather predictable plot and sweet but forgettable characters. A fun way to pass the time, but not one that left much of an impression even a few days later. Would recommend as a fun beach read to add a little fluff to a fun day
Hall's writing is breezy and accessible, making it easy to get lost in the world of witches, werewolves, and wizards. The story moves along at a brisk pace, with plenty of action and intrigue to keep you entertained.
The protagonist is spunky and relatable, and her journey of self-discovery is both empowering and entertaining to follow. The supporting cast of characters adds depth and flavor to the story, and their interactions inject a healthy dose of humor into the proceedings.
While the plot is engaging overall, there were moments when it felt a bit formulaic, and I found myself wishing for more originality and depth in certain areas. Additionally, some of the dialogue and character interactions felt a bit forced at times, detracting from the overall immersion in the story.
Overall, "The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic" is a fun read that will appeal to fans of light-hearted urban fantasy. While it may not break new ground in the genre, it offers an enjoyable escape into a world where anything is possible with a little bit of magic.
i received an arc of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for a honest review. This was a cute, cozy witchy read.
loved the book. the interaction between the two MC's was so much fun. I was giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. I liked how the MMC understood the FMC's need to come into her own on her own and he just helped in the background where he could.
This was a DNF for me. Not that it was bad but it just wasn't for me. I made it a few chapter in but just couldn't connect with the story or the characters
The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic" is a comforting and enchanting fantasy that can brighten even the gloomiest of days. This romance concocts a delightful blend of elements to craft a captivating narrative. If you're fond of mystical creatures, botanical wonders, familial dynamics, and a sizzling romance, then this book is tailor-made for your tastes. However, it's worth noting that the leisurely pace at times can lend a hint of confusion to the plot. Nevertheless, I eagerly anticipate the next instalment in the Charming Cove series to immerse myself once more in this enchanting world of magic.
I liked this book well enough. The main character wasn’t my favorite and the pacing was off. It was cozy and witchy but it was just okay.
Definitely a very cosy witchy fantasy that can warm up even the coldest rainy day.
The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic is a romance that puts together the most wonderful mix of ingredients to create a compelling story.
If you like magical creatures, plants, and beings, familiar dynamics, and a very steamy romance, this is the perfect book for you.
The only negative note I want to mention is the slow pace, which sometimes makes the story a little bit confusing.
I need the next Charming Cove series book to dive into this magical universe again.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the arc copy!
Magic and romance combine in this first novel in a small-town series. Witch Aria takes part in a magic competition against mage Callan... who just happens to be absolutely gorgeous. Boris the familiar badger steals many scenes with his humour and insight and contributes to making this an easy read which will appeal to fans of other books in the genre such as The Hex Ex.
