Aria and Callan are relationship goals! How willing he is to take a backseat and let her shine despite having his own reasons for being in the competition. What I loved was how supportive they were of each other in Charming Cove. And Boris is hilarious. I am really loving this start to a new series.
This was just lovely. I'm going to be honest, it had flawes. It was a bit too slow and characters didn't come off to believable and plot was way too predictable. Those things aside, it was still a fun and cosy read. It's amazing for autumn so I will be recommending this book to my followers for this season!
This was a nice easy read, a low stakes low fantasy set in a modern day magical community living secretly in a little Cornish town. The plot wasn't hard to follow, and the characters were not very complex but if you're looking for an easy, cosy read this is a nice one to follow without having to think too much about what's going to happen.
This was such a cute and incredibly fun read that I flew through in one sitting!
I really liked our mc's and I also loved all the side characters. I need more books with these characters! Boris was one of the best characters!
I love the premise of this and watching Aria grow to love herself and her abilities. I also loved that there was no real anxiety inducing drama and it was just such a relaxing and enjoyable read. I'm hoping to read the next one in this world very soon!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
A romcom with magic! I was sold on the description.
This is a sweet story based in a small town. It's the first in the Charming Cove series, which are standalones based in the same town.
This was a cosy read! I felt as though it was a little younger than the adult romance it was marketed as, which probably lessened my enjoyment a little bit, but overall a good book.
A cozy, modern magical fantasy book. A very cute read, I really loved Charming Cove and will definitely be reading on in the series! Aria and Callan are made for each other clearly, but they've had a rocky past. The competition alongside their ‘enemies’ to lovers arc was heartwarming and obvious. I love the comical addition of Boris the Badger!
I was so completely charmed by this book!!
If you are looking for a cozy romance with a bit of magic this is definitely the book for you! It was the perfect way to begin "Spooktober" while I was burned out on heavy mysteries and thrillers.
I absolutely adored Aria and Callan, they were a great pair together.
I am glad this is a series because I really enjoyed my time in Charming Cove!
Loved this sweetly charming, laugh out loud, sweetly sexy and emotional journey of self discovery and homecoming. An emotional roller coaster from beginning to end that was so hard to put down. Charming cove has it all, magic, mystery and small town community goodness like no other.
Unfortunately, I didn't finish this one. I felt like it was too cutesy and all though I like cutesy, it just wasn't for me. I like how the FMC has unique powers, but for some reason I couldn't get on board with the MMC. Also I didn't like the age gap--but again, a personal problem. I can't really explain why I didn't like it, it just didn't click for me and I felt like I was forcing myself through it.
I think I just needed this cute cozy witchy romance in my life and I cannot wait to read more from this author! This story follows Aria a woman who just lost her job again after her magic keeps blowing up. At this time Aria hears from her grandmother back in her hometown of charming hills that the man who runs the magical garden is retiring and Aria needs to get back to town to compete to win. Without the herbs and plants from the garden her grans shop will not be able to stay open. Aria is not looking forward to this her magic never worked right and was basically bullied out of town. When Aria arrives she sees she will be competing against her bullies from the past as well as. Callan a mage who she has some past history with. We follow throughout the competition and it it’s so adorable !
This book was such a comfort read for me at the beginning of fall and all this coziness I was sucked right in. I loved the characters in this book and felt if anything the plot could have moved a little faster at points but like I said I still had a great time with this one. Arias familiar was amazing he was a badger and was hilarious I cannot wait to pick up more from this author in the future! I would like to thank net galley and the publishers for a chance to read this book for an honest review.
Sign me up to live in Charming Cove! Linsey Hall's Charming Cove is so delightful and I can't wait to go back.
Aria is a bit of a hot mess as a witch and leaves her home of Charming Cove after high school to get away from it. She's called home to compete for the local garden - which is where her family's shop gets the bulk of there materials from. Callan is not a Charming Cove native, but is also interested in the garden... and in Aria.
I love how Aria and Callan work through what happened in the past and didn't let it drag on for all of enternity. I also appreciated how they figured out what was going on with her magic (and that it wasn't yet another "spellbound" situation).
Aria and Callan made such a cute couple and I they both put the needs of others as a priority over winning this competition.
Aria's familiar is a badger and I adored him so much.
This book is incredible! I adored The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic because it felt incredibly...magical! The characters where incredibly dynamic and the world was so well built. I felt that this book really lacked for nothing.
If you like reading books that have seasonal themes- this is a great book to read for Halloween. It’s lighthearted and fun, and just a touch of romance. Aria is a witch trying to figure out her magic. She is just trying to come into her own. She meets her person along the way. The setting was playful and magical and I enjoyed reading about it.
A fun read with Newt Scamander meets Willy Wonka vibes! The story was a bit predictable but it was fun and when something worked it really worked. My favorite parts dealt with the imagery of the environments, I mean who doesn't want to be in a place like Charming Cove?! And of course I Loved Boris (I'll take a fun badger familiar anytime!). He was Def the real MVP and deserves all the bacon sandwiches. Overall 3/5 stars.
First of all, thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for this ebook in exchange for an honest review
The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic is the first instalment in the Charming Cove series written by Linsey Hall in which we follow Aria as she tries to win the competition to win the biggest magical fortune and save her family's magical potion shop.
A magical competition set in a small town where there will possibly be romance? Sign me up for this. I found this book really cosy and perfect. The name of the city in which the action takes place, Charming Cove, led me to think that there was going to be some mystery involved because it sounded like a city straight out of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Inc. (I was definitely getting it mixed up with Crystal Cove though). And you know what? I wasn't far off, because it is a city where magical things happen and there is a kind of mystery in this novel. The plot, although kind of predictable according to me, was simple and easy to follow, but the subplots are what kept me interested in this book. The worldbuilding is not overly complicated, and I loved the fact that most of the action happens in a botanical environment as plant magic is one of my favourite kinds of magic!
And let's talk about the characters! I enjoyed reading Aria's (the FMC) and Callan's (the MMC) points of view, but Boris, the badger, was an absolute show-stealer and really funny. There is a little bit of romance, but it does not overpower the rest of the story.

I don't know that the title ended up making a ton of sense to me when paired with the plot, but I'm perfectly willing to overlook that when the story is as cute and wholesome as this book was! I love fall for reading witchy things, and this was a perfect start! It's sweet, it's funny, it's got romance and awesome family... I thoroughly enjoyed it!
What a sweet hug in a book. I loved all the focus on gardens and plant witches in this book. The descriptions were so good that I felt like I was in the garden myself. The characters were so fun and I liked the fact that there was a competition. The touch of romance was nice too. This was a perfect fall/magic book with all sorts of “charm”. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series.
4.5/5 stars
Thanks to NetGalley and Bonnie Doon Press for the eARC of this book.
This book was a cosy and light hearted. It read like a ya book but it’s what I needed to get me out of my reading slump. It was so fun and the plants 🌱 I loved reading about the plants
Sweet cozy witchy story featuring a witch who doesn't quite know what her power is. There's a lovely love story, a rich misunderstood love interest, and great family and friends.
3.5 stars
Described as a "fun, light romantic comedy", The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic delivers exactly that. I was very intrigued by the setup; a magic competition between the most powerful witches sounds incredible. But it should’ve been sold as a scavenger hunt slash friendly game with relaxed rules to allow time for making friendships and tackling outside problems. The writing was fun and light, and everything is very serious, but not so serious that there isn’t time for coffee and pastries.
It does seem a little strange that the central love story is a slow burn disguised as enemies to lovers based on one conversation many years ago when the age gap was more than a little troubling. It’s an awkward setup that takes some time to explain and ease into. Once that’s done, though, the obstacles seem to be overcome quite quickly, like most of the challenges in the narrative are. With all the supposed power and seriousness of this competition, I was expecting a little more going on below the surface, but I still enjoyed this read.
If you’re looking for light and enjoyable with a side of sweet romance, The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic has got you covered.
