if you are looking for a magical small town feel good rom-com, then this is exactly what you need!
struggling to fit in due to her rampant and unpredictable magic, Aria has fled her community in favour of the busily bustling metropolis of London, hoping to disappear in the anonymity of the city's streets. when Aria is fired from yet another job and her grandma comes knocking on her door, its time to throw in the towel, admit defeat and return to the seaside village of Charming Cove. But what is this about a magical contest, and why does her grandma seem to think that Aria has any chance of winning it? especially against the incredibly powerful and annoyingly handsome Callan Hawthorne?
this book was such a joy to read. I loved every second of this cosy, low stakes fantasy rom-com. the beautifully tranquil descriptions of the scenery and setting of the book, infused with the light and humorous banter between the characters brightened up my day. I cannot wait to dive back into this world with the sequel and anticipate rereading this novel many times over the course of my life.
Flew through this book, it was very eventful and fun!
I enjoyed the setting, even though a small town really isn’t all that rare to find in books. The characters were well thought out and the plot was paced in a way that made sense. I would recommend this book to others and would enjoy reading other novels by this author, as they are so breezy and easy to get through!
The title is a bit misleading since there was not much of a magical guide. Aria leaves her small town of Charming Cove shortly after her grandpa's passing. She is in the human world & has trouble controlling her magic. Her grandma convinces Aria to go back home & join a competition to win an enchanted garden. Callan is also a competitor & is someone Aria has a strong dislike for. However, they must join forces to excel at the competition.
The book is a light, cozy, & quick read. It did read a bit more young adult & Aria came off very immature. She seemed more of a teen than a 20 something year old. Other than Aria sticking her tongue at people, the story itself was pleasant. It reminded of those games you play where the character comes back to save the town & you have little challenges to do.
I'll be interested in reading the next book in the series. I woukd recommend to those who are looking for a comfy & magical read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Aria has always felt left out by the magical community because she has no control of her magic. She has tried separating herself, but when her grandmother’s shop is in danger of having to close, she is called back to try to win the contest that could save it. The means being forced to encounter frustratingly handsome and arrogant Callan.
Magical enemies-to-lovers romance, centered around family and plant magic? Yes please. Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic is a cozy magical romance, which I’m glad is emerging as a whole genre now. I really enjoyed the small town setting, and the magical green houses. The pacing was a little slow, but I enjoyed reading about the tasks for the contest. There was maybe a little lack of character development for the male love interest, which took away from the chemistry between them. I liked Aria’s support system who were always around to lend a hand. If you’re looking for a sweet romance in the vein of The Ex Hex and Payback's a Witch, give this one a try!
Really couldn’t get into it. Maybe I didn’t read the blurb as closely as I should but I just wasn’t expecting it to be so… cosy? I wanted a bit more romance and it was just too cutesy right from the beginning. Not for me.
I didn't finish this story in it's entirety because I didn't have time due to travel and work training, but on my gosh what I read was ABSOLUTELY PHENONOMENAL!!!!! I will be purchasing this book to finish it out and the rest of the series to read it in it's entirety! I am absolutely OBSESSED with this book and it's characters! 100% recommend this story!
Typically, Romantic Comedy isn't my type of genre, but since it had a touch of magical realism, I thought I'd give it a try. Surprisingly, I found it to be a fun read. I plan on reading book two in the series.
This was a cute witchy book. I think it could be classified as a young adult book. I thought the initial mention of the ages was uncomfortable, I wish she would have been 18 instead of 17. Other than that, it was cute and fluffy.
Thank you #NetGalley and Bonnie Doon Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All the above opinions are my own.
This was absolutely adorable! I love witchy romcoms and I think there should be more of them. This book was the perfect combination of light and fluffy, with adorable characters and setting. As a person who loves plants, I really enjoyed that aspect as well. If there are more books set in this small town, I will be sure to pick those up!
Thank you, netgalley, and the publisher for this ARC!
This was a quick and easy read! I loved all the magical plants. I just wish that there was more of a backstory for Callan.
Thank you to Linsey Hall and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book!
This was a delightful and enchanting tale filled with humor, romance, and magical mishaps. Aria's relatable struggles as a witch with unpredictable magic make her journey engaging and endearing. Set in the charming village of Charming Cove (where I would like to live out the rest of my days), the story takes unexpected turns when she enters a magical competition and finds herself falling for the cute billionaire Callan. With an engaging plot, witty narration, and a touch of whimsy, this book weaves a spell that keeps you hooked until the very end. A fun and heartwarming read that will leave you with a smile on your face.
This book really gave me strong Halloweentown vibes and I loved every second of it. I am hoping that there will be more to come in this world.
I absolutely loved this book and flew through it in a couple of days. A witchy romantasy, filled with magic? Count me in!
We follow Aria, is a witch whose powers seem to be out of control, something that she has been ridiculed for by her peers in the small town of Charming Cove. Despite this, she is determined to win the Enchanted Garden competition and show everyone what she is made of.
We also follow Callan, who is just the most gorgeous, sensitive soul. He may have done some things in the past, which Aria finds hard to forgive, but he definitely tried to make up for it throughout the book.
Their chemistry and banter together is fabulous and they were so easy to love. I really loved the multiple point of view between them, as I felt I got to know both characters really well.
Special shout out to Boris, who is the best familiar ever! He brought so much comedic value to the book and I just absolutely loved him. I wish I had a Boris around me to talk to and help out. He was just fab!
Aria has always known her magic is wonky and explosive so she doesn’t use it. Since she was tired of being constantly reminded of how much of a dud she was, she left her town and moved to London for a few years but when her gran comes to tell her of the competition to choose a successor for the Enchanted Garden in her town she’s whisked back to where everything began and worse, where Callan Hawthorne (the most powerful mage of their time) also is.
This was cute and I really enjoyed it up til the end where it felt a bit rushed after so much buildup. But I did enjoy it enough that I’d like to read the next ones and continue the series 🥰
Clumsy witches, magically clumsy that is, are fun to read. This is no exception. Aria has fumble fingers when it comes to making her green magic work, so she decides to leave town so she can leave the embarrassment behind. Eight years later, her grandmother arrives and announces that she is needed for a competition that only she, of all the family, can win.
Her nemesis, Callan, as well as others, compete against her. Only, Callan isn’t as much of a nemesis as she once thought.
Cute story. It lacks character depth and world-building depth, but this is romance and not science fiction. That sounds sort of literary snooty, but hopefully readers will understand. Even with that, I found the book cute and it kept my interest.
A very charming and cute story surrounded by magic. It was a quick and light read for any reader who likes to read about witches without being too heavy of a storyline! My only complaint is that I wish the characters were a bit fleshed out more - a lot of them were pretty flat and I wanted to know more about them.

Aria has been struggling with her magic since she was young. Fast Forward a good few years, her grandmother is ready to take her home, because the community of Charming Cove is relying on her to win the competition and become the new Heir of The Enchanted Gardens.
This competition is going to be tough, not only will she be going up against her school bullies, but also the man she despises the most, the irresistible Callan Hawthorne.
A light hearted, slow burn novel with dual POV. With a light sprinkling of spice and a smart mouthed badger named Boris, you're in for a treat.
A charming little story with magic a little different than what we are used to. I enjoyed the vibes of this book so much - the cozy town at the sea shore & all the plant magic. I think the unique cozy vibes are definitely what made this book (AND BORIS!!! loved him <3)
I do think though, that the character of Callan could have been a bit more fleshed out so that we, as a reader, understand his motivation a little bit better.
All in all, a very cute story, albeit a very predictable ending. I still enjoyed it though, so rating this book 3/5 stars! I will most certainly check out the second book in the series, as I can’t wait to return to the charm of this little town!
this was okay, but read a little juvenile and i didn't feel connected to the characters or what happens to them at all. i can see other reader enjoying this a lot tho!
— thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the free digital ARC.
I really enjoyed this magical read. It was charming, lighthearted and full of well developed and likable characters. I can’t wait for the next installment!
This is such a feel good book. I wish there was a little more time spent fleshing out the transition from enemies to lovers for Aria ans Callan. It happened quite quickly and resulted in my not being completely invested in their relationship. The supporting characters were my favorite. I would love more books focused on their lives!
