This is my second Daniel Hurst book and it wasn't my favourite of thrillers I just found it a bit predictable and could see the twist coming. The narrator did a great job and really enjoyed listening to it and would be interested to see if there is a sequel as i think the author did a smart and intriguing ending!
Thanks to netgalley for sending me this arc in exchange for my honest review, this book is available now.
The narrator did a good job. However this book was utterly predictable and makes women everywhere look incredibly stupid.
A fast-paced🍿listen that I binged and cringed in a weekend!
I enjoyed this entertaining story of Dawn and her daughter, Ellie. When Ellie has an online romance, Dawn's red flags start cropping up at lightening speed! đźš©đźš©I really liked both of them, but their choices were not the best. Ellie was 25, but acted more like a teen and her poor mom couldn't relax (ever). I could feel her gray hairs coming in!
Me : "No, no don't do that!" "No, no don't go there!" No, what are you thinking"? "Don't relax yet Dawn!"
Predictable, but quick and twisty with the alarm bells blasting throughout! đź””
Thanks NG for the audiobook! 6hrs/42min , great narration from Tamsin Kennard and Harrie Dobby
Available June 3, 2023
Ellie meets the man of her dreams online, and she starts chatting/ talking with him regularly. When Ellie's mom Dawn finds out about her daughter's boyfriend at first she is suspicious, and when the time comes for them to meet the boyfriend Daryl and his dad Harvey, they are all nervous! Dawn agrees that Ellie can fly from UK to US only on one condition and that is she will not go alone and will be accompanied by Dawn!
At first, Ellie is not for this idea but as she realizes that she will get to meet Daryl in-person she agrees. After a long flight, they meet and all is going well until Dawn finds the photo of a girl who was in the missing persons poster - she is too afraid to confront the father-son duo - she is not sure what the connection is but she just wants to leave their home!
After a weak excuse, they leave and head back to UK - Dawn is unable to sleep, she really must do something and right when Ellie is sulking that her mom separated her from Daryl there's a news update which will shake everyone's world upside down!
What follows post that is a shocking turn which will end up with one of them in the morgue!
Well written, and I look forward to the sequel - thanks to Bookouture Audio, Netgalley, Daniel Hurst for approving the audio ARC in exchange
3 stars...entertaining, but predictable. Still, I did enjoy this overall, and the narrators did a wonderful job. I stayed engaged throughout the book, and love that it took place in 2 different countries. Daniel Hurst is always good for a solid popcorn thriller.
My only positive comment is that the narrators did a descent job.
The story was implausible to the extreme. The characters were unrealistic particularly the daughter who was described as in her twenties but acted like a spoilt young teenage brat. There were inconsistencies throughout. One minute the daughter had no friends and then a bit later on she was mentioning all her friends. Another inconsistency was in how the mother initially described her daughter to us but then we met her and nothing matched. So sorry but I’m having to be generous to give this one even two stars.
My Daughter's Boyfriend by Daniel Hurst
Five Star Psychological Thriller
Well shooooooot!
This is not my first Daniel Hurst but it is just as awesome as the first one I read earlier this year. Daniel really puts you in it and while the initial twist wasn't a shock the end got me good. If thrillers are your thing please read this book.
Dawn and Elle live in England together after their husband/father died. Elle is just skating by not really living and not moving forward. As a 24 year old waitress with zero ambition she is really dragging her mom down and frustrating her. As any mother would be frustrated. One day Elle admits that she has met and fallen in-love with an American boy. Of course Elle wants to fly to America and meet him in person and Dawn insists that she goes too. Daryl and his dad seem the perfect hosts, they're so generous and kind until one day Dawn makes a disturbing discovery and then has to convince Elle that things aren't as they seem. The rollercoaster that follows is a wild ride!

I enjoy Daniel Hurst’s novels. They are always twisty, with characters you love to hate and well written. This one was a little predictable, and not as twisty as his previous novels have been, but still good.
That said, this is a fun, popcorn thriller with wonderful audio narration. We follow Dawn and her daughter Ellie as the latter embarks on an online romance. There’s lots of foreshadowing and secrets held. It’s an easy quick read that’s overall quite satisfying. Releases 3 June 2023.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a complimentary advanced listening copy. I cant’t wait to see what Daniel Hurst brings out next.
My Daughter's Boyfriend by Daniel Hurst is a gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller that will keep you hooked from start to finish.
I had the opportunity to listen the ALC of this book, thanks to NetGalley, and I was immediately captivated by the intriguing premise. The story follows a mother, Dawn, and her daughter, Ellie, as they navigate the complexities of Ellie's long-distance relationship with Daryl, a man she met online. Daniel Hurst skillfully weaves together the perspectives of both Dawn and Ellie, allowing me to delve into their thoughts and emotions. The alternating viewpoints add depth to the narrative and heighten the suspense as the story unfolds.
As Dawn accompanies Ellie to Los Angeles to meet Daryl in person, they are greeted by a luxurious mansion and what seems like a perfect relationship. However, as secrets begin to unravel, the tension escalates, and Dawn becomes increasingly suspicious of the men they encounter during their stay. The author keeps the plot moving with constant twists and turns, constantly challenging my personal assumptions and keeping me on the edge of my seat. The pacing is steady, allowing for thorough character development and an exploration of the complex dynamics between the characters.
The exploration of themes such as trust, love, and the lengths a parent would go to protect their child adds depth to the story. Daniel Hurst's writing style is engaging and evocative, immersing me in the emotional turmoil experienced by the characters. While some aspects of the plot may be predictable, the journey to uncover the truth is still highly enjoyable. The final chapters deliver an unexpected twist that leaves readers intrigued and eager for more.
Overall, My Daughter's Boyfriend is a compelling thriller that combines elements of love, suspense, and the dangers of online relationships. Daniel Hurst has crafted an engrossing story that will keep readers engrossed until the very last page.
I received an ALC of My Daughter's Boyfriend from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, and I highly recommend it to fans of psychological thrillers seeking a gripping and suspenseful read.
This is an audiobook that really makes time fly! Another suspense filled, exciting, and original story written by the super talented, Daniel Hurst. The narration is executed perfectly by Harrie Dobby and Tamsin Kennard. These narrators tell us the story from the perspectives of mother and daughter, Dawn and Ellie respectively.
Dawn, widowed mother to Ellie (24) is frustrated by Ellie's lack of ambition. Working as a waitress, Ellie spends most of her time in her room watching TV, Dawn fears she will neither contribute to bills, or fly the nest, any time soon. Dawn then discovers that Ellie has a secret boyfriend and far from being reassured, alarm bells really start to ring when she discovers that Ellie and Daryl are conducting their relationship online, necessitated by the pair residing on opposing sides of the pond! Things escalate quickly, and when Daryl and Ellie decide to meet, Dawn condones this only on the condition that she accompany Ellie on her maiden voyage to Los Angles. Needless to say no sooner has the aeroplane hit the tarmac than things start to heat up in more ways than one!
This is a great story, with all the plot twists we have come to expect from this author! Overall, highly recommended and easily another 5 starts from me.
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.
I have really enjoyed getting to know Ellie, her mum Dawn and boyfriend Daryl. Following their relationship as Ellie and Daryl finally get to meet in person after dating online, but some things are not always what they seem.
I sadly didn’t relate to the dynamic between daughter and mum, it came across as quite immature and I felt would it better suited a teenager and mum relationship.
The narration on the audiobook was fantastic and I really enjoyed listening to the two characters.
Overall the book kept me gripped all the way through and I had to continue to the end!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this audiobook.
My thanks to Net Galley and Bookouture Audio for this arc.
Ellie meets boyfriend Darryl online who lives in America, much against mom Dawn's thoughts. Ellie wants to meet Darryl so Dawn agrees to accompany her daughter to America where they stay with Darryl and his dad widower Harvey in California. Things start to take a dark turn when they find out father and son may be involved in the disappearance of a missing girl.
Positives: Great narrator, engaging story, quick listen, surprising twist at end.
Negative: Once the missing poster came up, things got predictable. Also, I found the characters of Ellie to be a bit childish for 24. Seemed more teen like.
Highly recommended this though.
Thankfully, yet another twisty, intriguing and a bit dark psychological thriller from Daniel Hurst!
Ooh he can write well! I was gripped from start to finish and really wasn't sure until the end how this would turn out. This author is definitely on my must read/listen to list, especially as he always picks great narrators like Harrie Dobby and Tamsin Kennard (I love her voice!).
I want to thank the author, NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to listen to this terrific new book.
This was the gift that just kept on giving! A perfect guilty pleasure read for the weekend or on holiday.
Widowed Dawn has adult daughter Ellie living with her. She loves her dearly but she'd like to see her move forward like her friends' kids, maybe get married or start a family. Get a steadier job.
Be careful what you wish for, Dawn! Ellie has met an American guy online and is wanting to go from London Fog to the City of Angels. Refusing to let her daughter go that far alone, Dawn books a ticket too and they both stay at his home with his father.
They get along well but a few things have them on edge. Will they be able to get back home? What's next?
This was a fast and fun read. It was absolutely outlandish but I loved it anyway, although it could be repetitive at times. I didn't really get the parent/child dynamic in either set. Nothing they did made sense to me and the kids felt a lot younger than mid 20's(see, I called them kids).
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen and review. The narration was fantastic.
“My daughter thought she had found the man of her dreams. But now her life is in danger…”
Daniel Hurst might just be my favorite author of the summer! He hits it out of the park again with this one! I love that it’s time from Mother/Daughter perspectives! And I especially love that there are two different narrators! This book snagged my attention right from the start & I finished it in a day!! It was fast paced and exciting! I loves it!
"My Daughter's Boyfriend" by Daniel Hurst, is a novel that explores the complexities of family relationships and the challenges that arise when a widowed mother discovers that her daughter is dating someone from across the pond. She ultimately ends up travelling to the US with her daughter to visit her daughter's boyfriend and his father.
Dark secrets are discovered and the story takes several twist and turns, keeping the reader guessing.
This book explores family dynamics and shows how far a parent will go to protect their children.
I received the audiobook from Netgallery. I enjoyed the two person narration and found it easy to follow the story.
If you enjoy character-driven psychological thrillers that explore complex emotions and family dynamics, this book may be worth checking out. Rated: 3.5/5
A sincere thank you to NetGallery for the opportunity to review this audiobook.
I've read a few Daniel Hurst books before this one and liked them all. This one is no exception.
Ellie us a 24 year old woman who acts more like a teenager. She meets a man online and travels to America to meet him. Her mother tags along. Awkward!
Ellie's mother, Dawn is concerned about the missing posters she sees around town and begins looking into it.
I listened to the audio version and loved the narrators. They did a great job portraying the characters and bringing them to life.
Although I found this one a little more predictable than the books I previously read by this author, it was still a great story.
Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the arc.
I listened to this in 2 days! I knew it would be good as #DanielHurst has become a must read author for me! It’s fast paced and plays out quickly.
The narration is fabulous by #HarrieDobby & @tamsinkennard.
Thank you, @danielhurstbooks, @Bookouture, #bookoutureaudio & @netgalley for my advance copy of this #audiobook! All opinions are my own.
My Daughter's Boyfriend by Daniel Hurst had a lot of potential that it didn't live up to. The first off-putting thing is the 24-year-old daughter needing her mother's permission for so many things even though she's a full-grown adult (although she doesn't always act like one). Why does her mother need to accompany her to be allowed to travel? Overall, I had a hard time believing what I was reading to be realistic in any way. The twists were predictable from the start. This is such a disappointment compared to other Daniel Hurst novels I've read. I rate it 2 stars.
Harrie Dobby and Tamsin Kennard were pretty good narrators. I enjoyed listening to both of them.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio for providing me with an ALC.
The king of thrills, Daniel Hurst, returns following, The Bride to Be with his latest gripping psychological thriller, MY DAUGHTER'S BOYFRIEND —From England to LA, a mother-daughter duo gets caught up in an online match-up in a web of deceit, secrets, lies, and MURDER.
Brake for jaw-dropping twists!
Prologue: Opens with a frantic mother, Dawn Andrews, from the south of England with a missing daughter in the US. It all started with her daughter's boyfriend. Their lives would never be the same.
Before America to after. Told from POV: Dawn and Ellie
Dawn, a mother meets her friends for coffee—they are all planning vacations. Not something she would know about. She is jealous that she is a widow (no life insurance when Sean died) and now a low-income single mom with a twenty-five-year-old daughter, Ellie, who still lives at home and does not pay rent. She thinks it is time she gets her life together and moves out. She is currently a waitress with no ambition.
Ellie acts like a teen (far younger than her years), plays loud music, and disrespects her mum. She writes in her diary and is online video chatting with a guy named Daryl from California in the US.
Ellie must tell her mom she has a boyfriend, Daryl, in the US (if you can call it that. They have never met or dated).
Ellie and her mom get into an argument. Of course, she does not understand why her mom would be worried about a guy she met online who lives in another country.
Flash forward, Daryl invites Ellie to fly to California (at his expense). Her mother only agrees if she goes along. (at her expense).
So the mother-daughter duo sets off to California to meet Daryl and his dad. Ellie is thrilled to see LA — Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Sunset Boulevard, etc.
Ellie dreams of staying in LA with a future. (again, she has never met him in person and knows nothing about him.) Mum may be a new person after some sun and vacation, she thinks. .
From England to LA, the two set off. The father, Harvey (wife, Jodie, died from an accident, but we do not know all the story yet), and son, Daryl, arrive at the airport to greet them.
In the car, on the way to their home, there is news about a mother and her missing daughter, about the same age as Ellie, named Aubree. She has been missing for three months—this news disturbs Dawn.
Their beautiful home has the WOW factor with a pool and luxury. They will be there for a week. Miles from home in a stranger's home. They should enjoy it.
However, they have yet to learn how intense things would get. Dawn gets an uneasy feeling. She will have to trust her daughter, Daryl and Harvey.
If you know Daniel Hurst, you know something SINISTER is about to happen, and he does not disappoint.
Daryl and Ellie take off on an adventure before Dawn awakes. Now Dawn and Harvey are in the car looking for them. Dawn sees a gun in the glove compartment. They are driving towards the remote desert in the middle of nowhere, looking for her daughter.
Something weird is going on. Other things give Dawn reason to believe they need to leave now. She does not trust Harvey or Daryl. She sees other evidence that makes her think Daryl and Harvey know about Aubree, the missing girl.
Did Daryl kill Aubree and his dad, covering it up? She must convince her daughter to leave ASAP for their safety. They must devise an excuse to leave so they do not suspect anything.
However, when they think they have escaped—Dawn takes matters into her own hands, and they are back in England.
Who will be the next victim? Who is the real killer? How far will a parent go to protect their child?
However, Daniel Hurst is also known for his jaw-dropping twists—another big one is coming before the end, back in England, that will BLOW YOU AWAY. Will this mother and daughter survive?
Just wait for the spine-chilling Epilogue by Harvey! Revenge.
I cannot say more—you must read to find out for yourself! It is a good one!
As always, Hurst entertains and is a pro at ratcheting up the suspense, fear, anxiety, and emotions and knows how to keep you glued to the pages/audio and gives you that last twist with his endings. A cautionary tale - stay away from online dating!
My only con: Ellie constantly whined about being in love when she knew nothing about this guy and did not act her age.
AUDIOBOOK: I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Harrie Dobby, for an outstanding performance for all voices! Highly recommend the audiobook.
