The author’s books are quickly becoming a favorite of mine to pull me out of a slump or to just cleanse my reading palette. They are always short, fast paced and twisty. What if your daughter came to you and told you she met the love of her life on the internet, and he lived thousands of miles away in another country? And that she wanted to go see him? Yeah, I am pretty sure that would be thoughts too. I don’t have to watch Dateline to know this is probably going to end badly. And I’ll also add in this one, I figured out what was going on pretty early on, but I was still entertained. Unlikable characters doing stupid things. I’m in as long as I want to know a little more. There weren’t a lot of characters, so not a lot of red herring suspects, but even though I worked things out, I did doubt my choices a time or two.

And while I quite often switch between reading and listening, this one I only listened. Harrie Dobby and Tamsin Kennard nailed the narration by bringing the story to life and keeping my attention. The narration will make or break a story for me and this one was spot on. I was annoyed when life got in the way and I had to hit pause.

The author’s books are good whether listening or reading and this one was no exception. If you are looking for a popcorn thriller, this is a great choice.

Story is told from the POV of Mother Dawn Brown and her daughter Ellie.

We are introduced to twenty-four year old Ellie who is working in a dead-end job as a waitress and is anxious to have a more exciting life. She meets Daryl on-line. He is also twenty-four and things just click with these two. After a few contacts Ellie believes he is the man of her dreams.
Daryl lives in America and she lives in England. They have never met in person so Daryl invites her to visit him and his Dad Harvey in Los Angeles.
Dawn is not pleased with Ellie going so far away and tells her she can only go if Dawn is invited as well. Everyone is okay with this! So mother and daughter are off to California.
Everything seems great with the visit in LA- well all is well at first. Daryl and his Dad are gracious as well as generous hosts.
One night Dawn is having difficulties sleeping as she hasn’t adjusted to the time differences. She decides a cup of tea might work. When she goes to the kitchen she opens a door thinking it might be the pantry but it is a door to the basement. Her curiosity takes over and she goes to see what is in the basement. She finds only boxes that have the clothes of Harvey’s late wife Jody. Dawn then see a picture of Daryl with an attractive girl who looks familiar; she looks like the missing girl she recently saw on a poster.
Hmm – Dawn more fear her motherly instants’ were correct in worrying about Daryl.

Story definitely held my interest. Additionally the narrators did a GREAT job in performing the characters.

This is my eleventh Daniel Hurst! Believe it or not but the first couple I read I thought were only okay.
I became a big fan when I read "The Couple in the Cabin" Then read seven others which were ALL GREAT "The Doctor’s Wife", "The Holiday House" as well as " The Intruder" etc.
I call myself a fan!
Daniel Hurst doesn’t disappoint!
Although it is True in this story, I was yelling at Ellie and ready to throw my tablet across the room!

I figured out some of the twists but it still was gripping. I really liked the way chapters went between Mom and daughter’s pov.

I enjoyed the narrators.

Daniel Hurst is an author I usually enjoy but this book was a miss for me. The storyline has the most awkward trip to see Ellie’s new online boyfriend while her mom tags along. My biggest problem is Ellie is 24 but during the entire book, her mother helicopter parents her as though she is 14. Meanwhile Ellie is incredibly immature, much like the lovestruck 14 year old her mom acts like she is. The mom refers to her and her boyfriend as the youngsters while Ellie talks about how she and Daryl snuck out. Again, she is 24. I found myself annoyed through most of it. I listened to the audio version and the narrators were great. I will definitely read more books by the author but would pass on this one.

Daniel Hurst is the author of several bestselling psychological thrillers, including 'The Passenger,' 'We Used To Live Here,' and 'Til Death Do Us Part.' His books have been the #1 Psychological Thrillers in the UK and Australia and regularly feature in the Amazon Top 100 charts.

“But I’m coming with you.”

Dawn wants her daughter, Ellie, to be happy. Ellie might be an adult, but a mother always knows. Daryl was a surprise, as was finding out that Ellie was determined to go see him.

This was intense! I love how Daniel tells a story. The build-up was well done, the plot was scary and realistic, and the characters were relatable.

Dawn was such a classic mom. She worried over her adult daughter and stopped at nothing to protect her. Ellie was a mix of naïve, selfish, and stubborn. Her character was young and idealistic, desperate to find a connection. Daryl was mysterious, awkwardly charming, and too good to be true.

The build-up of this story was terrifyingly intense, and the story kept me on the edge of my seat. The narrators were excellent. They brought these characters to life in such a realistic way.

Daniel Hurst has done it again, creating a terrifying tale that will haunt your dreams!

Dawn loves her daughter Ellie and although they’ve been having problems communicating when she finds out she’s been seeing a guy from America although slightly taken a back she wants to be supportive so when Ellie tells Dawn she wants to go see him and that his dad is willing to pay for her ticket to LA Dawn says she can go but only if she accompanies her. The first thing don’t notice is when arriving in Darrell and his dad‘s little part of LA is all the missing posts for a girl named Audrey but this is something she keeps to her self even when she sees a picture of Darrell and Audrey in the basement. She is still hesitant about giving her blessing to the Young couple and when she wakes up The first morning to find Darrell and Ellie gone she is very worried but when dad takes Dawn to the Clifftop where he believes they are she does find her daughter who looks a little shaken up but acts as if everything is fine. The picture of the missing girl and Darrell isn’t the only thing that makes dawn uncomfortable at the Home of her host and when everything comes out the boss Poliça involved in tragedy happens and I thought when all this happened that I couldn’t believe there was so much more of the book to go and OMG if this book didn’t send my mind in a tailspin talk about A red herring I knew when the story continued there was much more to it but OMG this book was so good I absolutely loved it I found the twist interns to be so intriguing and I’m going to be honest and say I listen to the second half of the book twice I loved the narrator‘s and thought both of them did a great job and what more can I say if you love a good thriller and love great twist and turns involved then you love My Daughters Boyfriend why Daniel hurst I certainly did this is just one of many books I have loved by him and can’t wait for the next one. My Daughter's Boyfriend
Daniel Hurst

🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is a nice and easy but intriguing listen.

Ellie has found the man of her dreams - online! ...but he lives in LA!
Since losing her Dad a few years ago, she's struggled to find happiness in everyday life, but talking to Darryl (who recently lost his Mum) has been a breath of fresh air.....and after months of chatting, they have fallen in love.

Her mum, Dawn, agrees for her to visit him in LA but is extremely suspicious and wants to accompany her.

When they arrive in the neighbourhood and see posters of a missing girl, Dawn starts to ask questions and as things develop, she becomes more and more worried about the two men that they are staying with.

I loved that this one seemed like an open and shut case and I found myself thinking, "well of course, I guessed that!" Only to find there would be an added element that then made me reconsider.
I feel like I did guess all the main parts of the plot - but the journey to them was still an enjoyable one.

I don't think this was super fast-paced but there was constant motion and development throughout.

I loved that the chapters were written from both Ellie and Dawn's pov and this allowed us to see much more into the minds of each.
I was waiting for....and was especially pleased to see a third pov for the last chapter where the killer twist came in.

Another great book by this author - can't wait to read more.

💕Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my ARC copy - this is my honest review💕

This is my first Daniel Hurst audiobook, although I have read others by him. It is the story of a mother, her daughter and the daughters boyfriend. Ellie has been talking to Darryl online and is invited out to America to stay with him and his dad. After lots of twists and turns you think you have the story sussed and then Daniel throws a curve ball and changes the direction of the play. I thoroughly recommend this book to readers or listeners who enjoy a good psychological thriller.

4.35⭐
Genre ~ psychological fiction
Publication date ~ June 3, 2023
Page Count ~ 249
Audio length ~ 6 hours 34 minutes
Narrators ~ Tamsin Kennard, Harrie Dobby
POV ~ dual 1st person
Featuring ~ dumb choices

Mom, Dawn & daughter, Ellie have been on their own since the untimely death of their husband/father. They clash at times as mothers and daughters do.

Ellie acts way younger than her 24 years with the choices she makes, especially that of finding a boyfriend online in a different country. I've never been to the UK, but surely there are some eligible lookers over there. Even Dawn doesn't make the best choices. Maybe it was fine that they head to the states to meet Daryl and his father, Harvey, but why on earth would they stay in the house with these strangers?? And going snooping around, too, just calls for disaster.

Despite the dumb choices I really liked this one. Even though there's some predictability, it's fast paced with edge of your seat moments. This book makes me have to reiterate to my teenager to make smart choices.

Narration notes ~ overall they both did a fine job. I'm happy there were 2 and their voices were age appropriate. I like that they attempted to do American accents for the men.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.
I was very excited to listen to my first Daniel Hurst thriller, but I must admit this one fell flat because it was entirely too predictable. It was like one of those Hallmark movies that you start watching and can immediately predict the entire plot, same with My Daughter's Boyfriend. Daughter meets boy online, they randomly decided to make a trip across the world to meet, creepy signs immediately show up and then you can guess the rest from there. I'm not a fan of spoilers because I think they are unfair, but if you're looking for an unpredictable thriller, this one is not for you.
The narration was well done and I'm going to give another Daniel Hurst thriller a chance...just need to decide which one to try first.

Blurb

My daughter thought she had found the man of her dreams. But now her life is in danger…

When Ellie tells me she has a new boyfriend, I am absolutely thrilled and can’t wait to meet him. She finally seems so happy and in love.

But there’s a catch. Ellie has never met him in person. In fact, he doesn’t even live in the same country. Our home is in England, but Daryl is in Los Angeles.

When handsome Daryl invites Ellie to stay with him at his luxury Los Angeles mansion for a few weeks, I insist on joining her. I need to find out more about the man who has my daughter so enamoured.

Daryl welcomes us into his whitewashed house, complete with a stunning swimming pool and sun-drenched patio. Then one morning, I discover a terrible secret in his basement that changes everything. He has been lying to us from the start.

I go to confront him, but Ellie and Daryl are nowhere to be found. I call Ellie’s phone but there’s no answer.

Has something happened to my precious girl? And will I be able to save her?

My Opinion

Daniel Hurst has written another great psychological thriller. How well can you really know someone that you have met online? Dawn is concerned for the safety of her daughter, Ellie when she finds out that her boyfriend, Daryl is from LA. The couple have met online and Ellie would like to travel to LA to meet him in person.

From the beginning I was drawn in and I have to say that Hurst writes books that I could easily finish in one sitting. This was such a gripping storyline. A highly enjoyable read.

Online Dating, the rules of engagement...

Ellie and Daryl meet through the vast realm of the internet. However, a geographical obstacle stands in their way, with Ellie residing in London and Daryl in Los Angeles. Undeterred by the distance, they devise a plan to meet in person, but Ellie's mother insists on accompanying her, unwilling to let her venture abroad unaccompanied.

Once in Los Angeles, they stay with Daryl and his father. However, as the days unfold, Ellie's mother begins to stumble upon hidden truths and witnesses unsettling occurrences that stir her unease. The narration is really good.

I find myself completely captivated. A remarkable ability to provoke thought and surprise with unexpected twists. Hurst's brilliance shines through as he masterfully craft an addictive and psychologically thrilling experience. This book does not disappoint. The characters are meticulously developed, drawing us into their intense world. I found Ellie's character quite unappealing as she consistently portrayed herself as a spoiled brat, displaying disrespectful behavior towards her mother on several occasions. Without a doubt, I adored this book and eagerly anticipate diving into the author's next masterpiece.

This book was mah for me. I will say that the author had me believing the dad was the real killer the whole time; even though my heart was telling me it was the son. Overall a really good read!

You always know you’re in for some twists and crazy fun with Daniel Hurst. Sometimes it works better than others for me. This one was in the top tier. When a mooching adult British daughter wants to visit her online mooching American boyfriend, mom invites herself along to stay with her daughter at the boyfriend’s dad’s house. What’s not to love here? For a hot minute, I thought this was going to be a double date romance book! 😂 I won’t say anything else! 🤐
The narration was spot on. Great job!

From the chilling prologue to the unsettling conclusion, I was riveted by this new release from Daniel Hurst. Told from the POV of Dawn a widow and her daughter Ellie, the story of an online love affair has us waiting with bated breath for disaster to strike. There are many instances in the story when I was sure the "bad thing" would happen. He fooled me every time until I the sand had almost run out of the hourglass on the book. Loved the two narrators. Definitely recommend this one if you are looking for a thriller that is set on both sides of the pond and keeps you guessing.

Listened on audio thanks to @netgalley.

Wow. The narration for this book was perfection! The characters came to life so easily through the readers voice.
I really enjoyed this storyline. I feel that it is very relatable with so much online dating happening in todays world.
I felt so bad for Dawn throughout the book & the epilogue told through Charley’s voice was everything the reader/listener needed at the end of the book!
Why did he kill his wife! Why why why! Dad is evil and his son?! Got me. I thought it was going to just be the father or the son but not both.

The narration was good & all voices were pleasing & distinguishable.

I really enjoyed this book and will be recommending it on all platforms of instagram and goodreads as well.

This was a very enjoyable, quick read (or listen as I used the audiobook), There were several twists, but they were all predictable. In fact, I was surprised when I thought the end was imminent and one of the expected twists did not appear, but it did.

The plot has a young British woman falling in love with a California guy. She wants to meet him. Her mother insists on going with. The visit goes well, but there are several things that make them uncomfortable enough to quickly return to England. It is a bit far-fetched, but good.
