This is the second part to the trilogy of the Asylum series by Susy Smith and which gives us more details on what Lacy and Jace have to go through hoping only circumstances will be good enough to get back together again.

The Big Crash in the U.S. has had a great impact on the lives of all Americans and Lacy's uncle Senator Thomas Monroe wants by any means take over the U.S., even if that means doing business with criminal organizations and putting the lives of other Americans and his own family at risk.

Lacy loves Jace, but Thomas'll make sure their love doesn't happen unless Lacy and Jace both help him to achieve some of his conquering plans and which later on lead to Lacy being captured by a sex-trafficking ring.

It seems that neither has a way to escape a terrible fate and the only thing they can hope for is a miracle. Will that be possible?

The only way to find out about all this is by getting immersed into their world.

In my opinion, the book fulfills its purpose as it mixes a wide series of events that keep one's interest until the end. But don't take my word for it, just give it a try and find out for yourself.

Let's now wait and see what Susy has coming for the last part of this series.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

In a world plunged into chaos and disintegration, civilization has crumbled, leaving only chaos behind. Lacy Monroe, determined to survive amidst the mayhem, finds herself in a dire situation with Jace, trapped in the clutches of her corrupt uncle, Senator Thomas Moore. Moore's power knows no bounds as he captures and separates them, coercing them into working for his sinister agenda.

Lacy is dispatched to Mexico City with a harrowing mission—to secure an army that will aid in overthrowing what little remains of the United States government. Meanwhile, Jace is thrust into a perilous mission to conquer New Mexico, the last bastion of freedom in the Southwest. Her journey takes a nightmarish turn when she is captured, subjected to brutality, and groomed for a sex trafficking ring. However, her brother, undeterred by the dangers of this treacherous world, is on a relentless quest to find her.

Jace, on the other hand, walks a perilous tightrope, feigning allegiance to Lacy's uncle while secretly undermining his ruthless plans. But if his double game is exposed, it could cost them everything. Lacy's aspiration is to become the Ascendant—the one who defies all odds to defeat her uncle and secure a semblance of peace in this dystopian world. Yet, time is slipping away, and the world they inhabit is growing more treacherous by the day.

It took me a while to figure out the characters and who was who and how they fit, but once I did, it took off for me. I enjoyed the plot and storyline and found the story entertaining. The author made me see the scenery vividly and allowed me to come into the world. THe only thing I wish I could have more is the definition of characters as I found they meshed together a little for me; however, that may not be everyone, so definitely read this and find out for yourself because the plot is super intriguing.

Thank you to Balkan Press / Babylon Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book.

Ascendant by Suzy Smith continues the world of Asylum, where Lacy and Jace fight against a dystopian United States and her uncle, who is determined to take over the country. I hadn't read the first one, so the first few chapters I was trying to figure out what was going on - I think it's assumed that you know the characters and the plot of the first novel.

It's a tough read at times and definitely not for younger readers with the amount of violence and other things that happen in the book. But if you are a fan of broken worlds, this one may be for you.

Susy Smith's Ascendant is a gripping dystopian novel with an unerring vision for a bleak future, takes readers on a harrowing journey through a world transformed by power, control, and the resilience of the human spirit. This unflinching exploration of a society's descent into chaos is a haunting and thought-provoking tale that lingers long after the final page is turned.

Definitely, a tour de force in the dystopian genre that leaves an indelible mark on the reader's consciousness. With its immersive world-building, dynamic characters, and exploration of timeless themes, the novel resonates with a sense of urgency and relevance.

This is the follow up to Susy Smith's Asylum. You could read this as a stand alone but you'd enjoy the book so much better if you read the first one. The first book built the community....North America.....as it remains in this timeline. This world is governed by Lacy's uncle. He is a totalitarian and is determined to stamp out any remaining resistance using any and every thing at his disposal. Ascendant is the ruler who would save her people and her world. Lacy's goal is to become that ascendant and remove her uncle from rule. She and her friends must wage their resistance on multiple fronts while trying to keep one step ahead of the uncle's troops.

This does have a Hunger Games feel to the story but is much more violent and contains many events that a younger reader should probably not be exposed to. The violence is what would be expected should a war break out in the United States. This is the second book and will be followed by a third so not everything gets resolved, BUT, as a whole, this is definitely a book that will grab your attention and keep it until the last page. The characters make the mistakes young adults make, but learn quickly and keep the action and tension moving quickly.

A dystopian thriller of the best kind - credible and terrifyingly realistic. The interplay in relationships, especially between the protagonist and her uncle, add a layer of complexity which makes this all the more fascinating,

In her gripping sequel to Asylum, Susy Smith delves us further into the post-apocalyptic world she crafted in her debut novel with Ascendant. Rich in dystopian elements and thrilling plotlines, this book grabbed me and won't let go...just as a gripping, compelling book should!

The dystopian world Smith has created is chilling and vivid, punctuated by the harsh realities of survival and the desire for freedom. The backdrop of Mexico City and New Mexico add variety to the landscape, making the reader feel as if they are on the journey with the characters.

Lacy, our determined protagonist, is a beacon of resilience. Smith gives us a character who embodies the human spirit's determination and strength, making Lacy an inspiring figure for readers. The book's pacing is excellent, with a balance of suspense, action, and character development. Smith's knack for building tension and escalating stakes keeps readers on edge, turning pages late into the night. The exploration of themes like power, survival, and love are handled with great finesse, adding more weight to the narrative.

As Lacy and Jace struggle against overwhelming odds, you will find yourself rooting for them till the end, just like I did. Now I am eagerly anticipating the next installment.
