Lots of big emotions in this volume. I especially loved the argument scene between Cath and Wren.
TW: ableism, mental illness (anxiety, manic depression), past parental abandonment, mention of past infidelity, dangerous driving
This once again added to the story of Fangirl! I just love the way the illustrations tell both the story of Fangirl and Carry On! Also it's just so beautiful to see the soft expressions of Cath and Levi as they come to understand their feelings for each other! By making this is into a manga, it allows for us to have such an amazing depth to the already amazing story! I am looking forward to seeing how the story concludes!
Such a brilliant adaptation... it has beautiful artwork, is true to the original and yet manages to add an extra little something that makes it feel very special to read. Love it. Volume 4 please 😊
Thank you Netgalley and VIZ media for supplying me with a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
Once again, thanks to Net Galley, Viz Media, Ms. Rowell and Ms. Nam for letting me get my hands on this early. Each time I get a new volume I remind myself that I didn't know I needed this until I saw it. I love the novel and while I think the Carry On books that spun off from these are up and down, I think that the entire Cath universe is amazing. Love the way that Nam differentiates Cath and Wren. That is just how I see them. The way she changes the style of the comic to fit the mood of the panel is brilliant.
Sooooo Good.
Received this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was super cute. It was a nice way to reignight the excitement for the roots of Simon Snow and it was kind of fun to just jump in for this section of the story when things start getting really good.
Being able to relive a favorite novel in a different format and having it hit you with all the feelings you had during your first read of the original…. truly an amazing experience! The art conveys the emotional beats to perfection and the character designs are on point. I think this could even be enjoyed by someone who never read the original novel. If you enjoy angst coming of age college romances then I highly recommend this manga.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I am LOVING this manga series! It honors so wonderfully the novel, but you do not have to read the novel first to enjoy it. Rainbow Rowell always crafts such wonderful, relatable characters. The illustrations are perfection, and if you (like me) are deeply obsessed with the Simon Snow trilogy, the illustrations of Simon and Baz will quite likely make your heart sing! I can’t wait for the next one!
I loved the original book Fangirl and reading the manga is always fun, because I can see what I saw in my head when I read the original. A big thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the ARC of the book.
<spoiler>Book 3 picks up after Cather sees Levi kissing another girl at the party. She soon discovers her writing partner is taking advantage of her for her skills and that she cant really write a story with her own characters at the moment, then her dad has an episode. Cather rushes home with Levi's help (who she has been avoiding since he kissed another girl). The holidays start and Ren goes off to visit with their mom who abandoned them. ...</spoiler>
The graphic novel of Fangirl is something I look forward to. The artwork is fantastic and the story has been one of my favorites.
Another solid entry in this series of manga adaptations of Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl. I love the original book and have enjoyed these adaptations, which have been very faithful to the source material. The art is great, and I love seeing these characters come to life. This may be my favorite volume so far, as it captures some of my favorite parts of the original story.

Summary:
Cath is going through a lot of changes in her life. Starting her first year in college, she comes face to face with…real adults! While learning to navigate a new world, she also has to manage a tense relationship with her twin sister and quirky father. Thankfully, Cath can always disappear into the world of Simon Snow.
The 3rd installment of Rainbow Rowell’s popular novel “Fangirl”.
Con:
Regarding the format of the book, when manga is produced in black and white, sometimes it's a little difficult to see what is going on in the panels of the book. When I spend more time trying to make out the shapes of the art it pulls me out of the story. However, this is not enough of an issue to prevent me from finishing the book, just a small bump in the road.
Pro:
This book has been my comfort read since freshman year in college (6 years ago). Everyone needs a Reagan in their life, and I could personally use a little Levi as well. Reading Fangirl is like a 2-for-1 deal as Rowell hops between the world of Simon Snow and Cath’s life. For people feeling jittery about change and new things, may this book be a comfort and assurance that things will work out in the end.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this one early in exchange for an honest review!
I'm liking these so so much! More than the og novel in a lot of ways (sorry, Ms. Rowell).
I know I said this already, but since this is an Official Review, I'm going to repeat myself a bit: the graphic novel format is perfect for Fangirl! The visuals makes the Simon Snow bits more engaging for me, and also Levi was born to be a manga character tbh. Don't love that they all end on a cliffhanger, but oh well.
If you enjoyed the first two, this is more of the same. (and I mean that in the best way possible)
Volume 4 WHEN?? 🥺
Fangirl, Volume 3 is the continued graphic novel adaptation of the Rainbow Rowell book of the same name. This volume begins with Cath facing the aftermath of seeing Levi kiss another girl at a party, and also trying to come up with an idea for her short story final for her fiction writing class.
Gabi Nam has such a wonderful, emotive art style that really works for this story. Her panel flow is excellent and her use of blacks in the Simon Snow panels is dramatic and on point. I wish she had more dark elements and heavier use of black in her segments with Cath as Cath is dealing with heavy personal issues in this volume. I think a little heavier hand with the ink could have lent itself to the emotionality to this volume, but this is a small gripe as overall the art is great and the flow is even better.
As this is an adaptation of a novel, it feels disingenuous to critique the story except in terms of how well it has adapted to the graphic style and if it fits the medium, and for both I think it has worked out well. Because the story revolves around fandoms at large, is a coming-of-age story, and is very emotional, a graphic adaptation is a natural progression, perhaps even more so then any film to screen adaptation could be.
A HUGE thanks to Viz Media for giving me an advanced reader copy of this for an honest review! I have been reading manga Viz Media publishes for over 15 years so to be given this privilege is such an honor!
This is a cute continuation of this story. Like the others, I felt like it ended abruptly, but I am looking forward to volume 4!
I love this whole series! It works so well as a manga. The relationships are so sweet with a touch of real issues that are dealt with beautifully. I love Cath and Levi's relationship it is so sweet!
I'm a fan of Rainbow Rowell so when I saw this was a graphic novel, I was intrigued. I was not disappointed! This book will be very popular at my library!
The way I read this in less than an hour. These graphic novel adaptations are so incredible! Being able to read one of my favorite novels in a different format where we can see each characters and their emotions is amazing, and I really commend the artist for doing such a wonderful job converting this book into a visual medium. Stunning just like the first 2! 5/5
Thank you to Netgalley and VIZ Media for the eARC.
I loved the first two volumes, so it's only logical that I'd love this one too! I need the fourth one in my hands asap because this one was incredible.
Fangirl really translates fantastically into graphic novel form and gives it a new life. I’ve always loved this book, but I got into the habit of skipping the Simon Snow parts on rereads, but I find them more engaging in graphic novel form. Whether you’ve read Fangirl before or haven’t because you prefer graphic novels, this is worth a read.
As a longtime fan of Rainbow Rowell and Fangirl, I love, love, LOVED this so much! The art style: beautiful. The adaptation of Simon Snow/fanfiction scenes: wonderful. I have already preordered this and cannot wait to add it to my collection!
Another really good installment of this manga adaptation, that remains faithful to the source novel. A lot of the novel's happenings are compressed, but there's a still a lot of emotion in this volume, and it doesn't feel rushed. I really like manga-Cath and feel she's a great rendering of the character from the original book. This volume ends on a cliffhanger much like the last, so it doesn't stand alone as well as it might, but it's a fun, charming, exciting continuation of this series. As always, I absolutely love the Simon Snow inserts and would love to see more of that side of things in the next volume.
