Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

A wonderful psychological suspense about the relationship between Catherine Sterling and her mother Ruth. Although the mother and daughter believe they know each other completely, as the story progresses you learn dangerous secrets were kept, and that both character is more multifaceted than the other imagined.

Excellent mystery, with the superb storyline and plot development we have come to expect from Sarah Pekkanen.

I have been a fan of Sarah Pekkanen since I read An Anonymous Girl by her and Greer Hendricks. This is the first book that I read by Sarah alone and I really enjoyed it. This is kind of a slow burn and it takes a it to really get into the mystery full on but when you do it is amazing.

Kate Mara was a really good narrator. I find that not everyone is great at audio narration and even though you would assume that all actors would be great but some aren't. I really enjoyed Kate though.

I am a fan of Sarah Pekkanen - either solo or with her writing partner. Gone Tonight was one of the best thrillers I read this year, and navigating the relationship of Ruth and Catherine is one wild ride.

Pekkanen's masterful storytelling keeps you guessing until the very end, leaving you questioning the nature of love, family, and the lengths we go to protect those we hold most dear.

Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for sharing this one with me. All thoughts are my own.

I’ve been a big fan of Sarah Pekkanen’s books that she has co-authored with Greer Hendricks and when I saw that she had a solo novel coming out, I immediately put it on my TBR.

Gone Tonight is a fun, twisty, and intense thriller that unravels the story of a mother’s past and the impact that has had on her daughter’s future. Pekkanen allows the reader to get to know both mother and daughter by having alternating narratives between the two characters. We get an opportunity to learn about each of their personalities and motivations, which helps to build a strong bond with them. I was most drawn to Ruth’s sections, as I was very curious to know the secrets she was hiding.

Pekkanen keeps the pacing at a quick tempo, filling the story with twists and turns to keep the reader on their feet. There were definitely times when I would catch myself believing that I knew all the right answers for this story to only then have Pekkanen tell me I was wrong. I did get a few things right, which I always love!

🎧: If you’re debating picking this one up as a physical copy or on audio, I would highly recommend the audio. Kate Mara is the narrator! She does an unbelievably good job of embodying both Ruth and Catherine and truly brings the story to life.

I really enjoyed this one. I was invested from beginning to end with this story line. I am a sucker for a thriller with a dual POV and this one was no exception. I loved hearing from both Ruth and Catherine. The audiobook was also fantastic. Definitely would recommend.

Wow. That is just one word to describe this book. I am still stunned. This was my first Sarah Pekkanen book, but it most certainly will not be my last. This book was incredible. I loved how solid the structuring on this book was. The twisting plot and the tension, oh my! I also really enjoyed the multiple POVs. I was captivated the entire time and was on the edge of my seat. This was such a great read!

This was a unique thriller in that there is a very big focus on the mother daughter relationship in this one. The beginning was a tad slow but the twists kept coming and were some ever juicy! Once I got into the story, I couldn't put it down anymore - it just sucked me in and would not let go! I can't say much without giving away the plot but I enjoyed this one!

I did go between the ebook and audiobook for this one and eventually just finished with the audiobook since it allowed me to multitask while reading haha! The narrator did a great job, though if I wasn't careful sometimes I would miss a POV switch.

CW: Sexual assault, child abuse, bullying, domestic abuse, alcoholism.

A huge thanks to Macmillan audio, St-Martin's press and NetGalley for the ARC for review, all opinions are my own.

GONE TONIGHT is an up-all-night mother-daughter thriller that asks the reader how well do we really know those closest to us?

Centering around single mum Ruth and her daughter Catherine, Pekkanen takes us on a chilling journey of what lengths a mother will go to, to protect her child. Ruth and Catherine have always been close as its been just the two of them for all of Catherine's life, When Catherine accepts a new position at The John Hoskins Hospital in Baltimore, ready to start her own life, she notices a steady decline in her mothers health.

Chock full of tension and twisty secrets, I read this in one sitting. Brilliant, suspenseful, emotional and utterly entertaining.

Gone Tonight is a slow burn and I loved it. This book has alternating chapters between Catherine and her mother Ruth. This mother/daughter relationship is anything but normal. I LIVE for drama (that doesn't involve me) and this book had a ton of it. I love Kate Mara as an actress and i thought she was a wonderful narrator.

Gone Tonight by Sarah Pekkanen

Catherine, a successful 24-year-old nurse, is about to start on a new job in Baltimore when she learns that her mother, Ruth, might be in the early stages of Alzheimer's. This revelation shakes Catherine's world, especially as her grandmother also suffered from the same disease.

Ruth and Catherine have always been close, so Catherine's plans to move away are put on hold as she steps in to care for her mother. But as she suspects that something else is wrong with her mom, she uncovers dark secrets that Ruth has been hiding. With no other relatives, Catherine begins to suspect that her mother's desperation to keep her close is linked to a dangerous past.

Sarah Pekkanen explores the complexities of mother-daughter relationships, presenting their perspectives and motivations in a way that captivates readers. The alternating viewpoints between Catherine and Ruth offer insight into their inner thoughts and emotions, allowing us to understand both sides of the conflict.

"Gone Tonight" is a must-read for those who enjoy family dramas filled with tension and suspense. I enjoyed the audiobook, wonderfully narrated by actress Kate Mara.

Thank you, St. Martin’s Press, NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and author Sarah Pekkanen for my gifted copy.

Psychological thriller about a mother and daughter who spend their whole life on the run. The daughter who is now 24 plans to move to Baltimore to take up a nursing career and suddenly realizes what lengths her mother will go to, to keep her home with her. The story is told from the mother's and daughter's POVs. The mother is writing a journal to give to her daughter explaining what happened in the past. Several twists, good plot, well narrated. Thank you to Netgalley for an audio of this book.

Unfortunately there just wasn’t enough in this one to stick it out for me.

This was especially hard decision considering my sister read it and loved it.

However, as an avid thriller reader, the ending was just so obvious from the very beginning (confirmed by my sister who finished it) and the domestic feud of mother and daughter was not for me.

I have nothing negative to say about the actual writing style, just that the plot and story was not moving in a direction of something I wanted to keep reading.

Maybe the next one will pan out better for me?

Short synopsis: When her mother Ruth starts to show signs of early dementia Catherine is determined to get her help. But Ruth will do anything to let that happen.

My thoughts.m: I went into this expecting a fast paced thriller. While the beginning was somewhat of a slow burn the middle to end had some completely unexpected twists and turns!

I really liked the past/present time jumps and the different perspectives as Ruth’s history unraveled and the reader gets to see why she made the choices she made. I was definitely kept on the edge of my seat and binged this one!

I read this on audio, and the narrator did such a phenomenal job at connecting the reader to the characters and telling the story.

Read if you love:
- Mother/daughter duo
- Alternating POV
- Family secrets and lies
- Solving puzzles

This book was very good. I wouldn't say it was very thrilling per say, BUT it was a good mystery/family drama. I liked the alternating POV's between Ruth and her daughter Catherine. Overall, a very good read. Great book by herself ! I also really enjoyed the narration of this audiobook!!

Trigger Warning: Alzheimer's, Memory Trouble

From the start, I was hooked. The story swaps point of view between, the mom - Ruth and the daughter - Catherine. Their relationship is extremely closeknit until things start unraveling. Ruth begins to tell the reader the truth from the start while Catherine is living naively in the dark. Until Ruth slips a tiny bit. Just enough for Catherine to catch on that things might not be as her mom lead on her whole life. We are then taken through Catherine's every move to try to unravel the lies that her mom told her. Are the lies meant to keep her safe or to manipulate and deceive her? One of them makes a catastrophic mistake that will change everything.

The change in povs was not confusing at all. And even though the reader found out what Ruth was hiding, that did not change the level of suspense Gone Tonight provided the reader. This was fast paced and well written. Definitely a psychological thriller I would be happy to recommend.

THEIR BOND RUNS DEEP. THEIR LIES RUN DARK.

GONE TONIGHT was really good, as I expected it to be. This mother daughter drama was intense, complex, heavily and deeply layered with secrets, lies, doubts, mistrust, and danger. Ruth has so many secrets and seems to be a master manipulator of her daughter and presumably everyone else. Catherine seems to be the good girl, trying to do right by her own standards and to grow her wings and find freedom from her mom. But like any good dramatic thriller, both of these characters have much more to them than the reader can at first comprehend.
Twisty, fun, well-paced, and a surprise at the end. Well done Sarah Pekkanen.

KATE MARA AS THE NARRATOR?! Sooooooo good.
