The Way of the Househusband: The Gangster's Guide to Housekeeping is a new, fun approach to household chores and cooking, told through the lens of the ever-chaotic Tatsu. From cleaning your turf to procuring the best stuff - Tatsu has a tip for everyone and Laurie Ulster and Victoria Rosenthal manage to capture his energy perfectly.
The book will be an amazing gift come the holiday season. I had an opportunity to interview both authors who spoke in detail about their creative process.
I already enjoyed The Way of the Househusband and this was such a fun way to present this information. I even learned a few things! The emphasis on avoiding harsh chemical cleaners is really nice, too.
I wouldn't say this is something everyone should buy for every person who is about to get married or even just about to move in with their significant other. The intended reader should at least be someone who likes The Way of the Househusband, which started as a manga and spawned an animated Netflix show. On its own, there are definitely better resources on housekeeping, but if you are already into the work that inspired this, why not make learning housekeeping fun?
A cute tie-in to The Way of the Househusband series! It has a diverse mix of various life-skills from cooking to cleaning written in a clear, easy-to-follow way. I think this would be the perfect gift for any teen/young adult/new adult who might need some extra life-skill guidance that also doesn't take itself to seriously.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!
What a great way to make housekeeping enjoyable! The style and perspective of this manga is refreshing, because it gives you the best parts of a book wrapped up in the guise of manga. The comedic slant on the topic is really engaging, making this text marketable for more than young adult readers but possibly also reaching out to millennials, young married couples, etc. This brings to mind questions of plans to grow the audience of the text thru increasingly adding topics more favorable to older or more mature audiences. Lots of places to laugh out loud while taking in household tips, recipes and a sense of humor about taking care of mundane household practices. Leave it to the Househusband to brighten the day…cleaning house!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this one early in exchange for an honest review!
This is exactly what it says on the tin: a The Way of the Househusband-themed guide to basic life skills - budgeting, cooking, doing laundry, taking care of a sick loved one, etc. If you like the series and are in the market for something like that, it would definitely be useful.
Fans of the series who don't need to learn how to get stains out of a shirt or make a birthday cake probably won't get much out of this, so maybe see if your local library has it before commiting to buy?
A fun gift for a manga fan setting out on their own... a diverse mix of topics, although most of the dishes aren't very feasible in American kitchens.
I was hoping for at least a couple of original stories from the manga, but this book just recycles panels from.the manga. Still, it's a very informative book with helpful tips about everything from cleaning to self-defense and several delicious-looking recipes. It would make a great gift for a young adult just starting off on their own.
