I really loved learning more about Ramadan in this book, especially through the child's perspective. I also loved how it talked about ways to celebrate Ramadan other than fasting as I think that's what people grab onto most about Ramadan when really there's a lot more to it. What I didn't love was that Aliya kept fasting a secret -- in our family we talk about not keeping secrets and I would have liked to see more of a family discussion around fasting instead of Aliya trying to keep it a secret; just a personal preference. However, I really enjoyed the book and the ways it explored Ramadan and would recommend it.
This is a sweet picture book that explains the basic idea of Ramadan. The author based in on an incident, when she was a child, that she wanted to be like the grownups, and fast too. Only, it is really hard to do when you are young, and like the girl in the story, she just got too hungry to continue.
What is sweet is that it is written in such a way that muslims and non-muslims can understand what is going on. That the mother explains all the good that happens during Ramadan that goes beyond fasting. And that the little girl also celebrates with her non-muslim friends to introduce them into the holiday.
We need more books that show kids about their lives, as well as windows into the lives of others.

A great book about a little girl who wants to fast during Ramadan just like her parents. This is a great book for all children - it will teach them about Ramadan and the various way people celebrate it.
