This book was fantastic! Lots of twists and turns. One incredibly, unreliable narrator and one almost squeaky clean, morally correct narrator which made for a really incredible story. It's also incredible that this story came from the author's own stint in rehab. This is the second book I have read by this author and since they've both been five-star reads, that catapults this author to my auto-buy list.

Thanks NetGalley and SourceBooks Landmark for this arc!

3.5/5 stars

This was really well written, but oof what a tough read at parts, if addiction is triggering for anyone definitely be aware, it dealt with it more than I realized going into it. This was still good though, many twists and turns to be had!

What is going on at this clinic and how can you trust anyone? This was a unique thriller/mystery and had many twists that I didn’t expect. Sometimes it felt like too many twists. It definitely kept me reading and the author’s note was an interesting revelation. I need to read her backlist.

Mystery in an old asylum that’s now a celebrity rehab? Count me in! I thought the protagonist’s career was very original, and she certainly had enough flaws to count as an unreliable narrator. Lots of other flawed and unreliable people in the supporting cast. I’m not sure I found the ending all that believable, but I was willing to go with it after that ride.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.

Meg is an undercover high-roller, trapping those conning casinos. Meg’s job also leads her to be in a position to feed her abuse of drugs and alcohol. Meg learns that her sister, famous singer, Haley Banks has been admitted to a high end rehabilitation centre for the rich and famous, set in a remote area. She quickly learns that Haley is dead from an apparent overdose, Meg does not believe that and thinks Haley must have been murdered. She devises a plan to get herself checked in to rehab and try to find out what happened to Haley, her sometimes more than a friend, Harry tells her that she could use this time to get herself clean as well.

This facility is like nothing she has seen before, with a small group of clients, all famous or well known in some way, and all with their issues. As Meg tries to cope in this bizarre rehab with very strange rules, she has to try to figure out which of these people killed her sister, and it’s even more strange when she starts getting messages that appear to be from Haley. Meg is starting to have odd reactions to the unconventional methods of treatment. Can Meg solve Haley’s murder, or will she put her own life in jeopardy. Good read with some great plot twists but I felt that the story could have wrapped up a little quicker.

Short chapters? Yes.
Isolated, foggy setting? Check!
Rehab treatment clinic full of sketchy characters? Yep.
Questionable staff? Yes.

I mean, what is missing here? Nothing. This book is full of twists and turns as professional card player Meg enters an isolated, luxury rehab clinic undercover to solve her sister's murder. Meg herself struggles with drug and alcohol addiction but refuses to comply with treatment for several days. We shift between Meg's point of view and Cara's, who is the general manager of the clinic. Seeing the story from an employee's POV helps give more perspective into what the doctor's treatment plans are like, as well as the layout and scheduling within the clinic.

This book caught my attention and had me hooked until the end. Yes, its a bit popcorn-ey but I didn't mind. I also found it interesting that the book was inspired by the author's own time in rehab. So take that with a grain of salt!

Thank you to Sourcebooks Landmark for sending me a copy of THE CLINIC. This one is out now.

This book was so good. I was always thinking about it and missed reading it when it wasn't in my hands. I loved the short chapters, alternating perspectives and it kept me on my toes. I didn't see this one coming at all. Honestly, in a book filled with characters that should have been unlikable, I honestly liked them all.

I highly recommend this one.

This was an interesting book, with trigger warnings for addiction issues and abuse. Meg works for a casino and has a problem with pills and alcohol…and her famous singer sister, Haley. They’re not close, but when Meg hears that Haley has died under suspicious circumstances in rehab, she decides to investigate by admitting herself as a patient and hiding her real identity.

Things get dangerous very quickly and Meg has to battle her addictions, figure out what happened to her sister and keep herself from the same fate.

I enjoyed this book, but the premise was very far-fetched and overly complex which took away from the powerfully authentic voice of Meg and her experience with addiction.

T he story grabbed my attention immediately and didn’t let up as I rapidly turned the pages. The plot is twisty and riveting and there is a feeling of deep anxiety. I felt concerned for Meg as she tries to make sense of what has happened and what is happening to her. There are some exciting and frightening scenes that have a terrifying realism to them. Both the inner and outer conflicts faced by Meg move the story forward and through some unexpected turns.

WOW…..what can I even say?!

This book HAD ME. It wrapped its pages around me and held me to it from beginning to end with no mercy.
I was fully engulfed in the experience of reading this book and I loved every second of it. I loved every character, every INSANE twist and turn, every beautifully written backdrop.

Bravo Cate 👏🏼👏🏼
A stunning book that I will recommend to every single one of my book friends.

This book was difficult for me to rate. I found the first half to be a bit slow moving, but things began to pick up in the second half. There was also a pretty cool twist near the end, and I always love when something happens that I didn’t see coming!

I think my main issue with this book was the writing style. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but it felt a bit choppy and was hard to get through sometimes. I also felt that it was hard to connect with the characters. They seemed a bit two-dimensional to me.

I think this could go either way for people, so if you’re in the mood for a thriller with a medical and a psychological component, make sure to check it out!

Thank you to Sourcebooks Landmark for my gifted copy!

Meg is a drug addict whose famous singer sister died in rehab. Cara is the manager of the rehab. Told from their two perspectives, the reader gets to follow along as Meg tries to learn the truth about what happened to her sister, and Cara learns the truth about what's going on at her rehab. Fast paced, couldn't put it down for the last half of the book!

This book had such a unique plot, and I loved how suspenseful it was! The setting of the clinic was quite eerie and mysterious, and I thought the characters were all so well written, especially Meg and Cara. It was hard to know who you could trust, especially considering that most of these characters were dealing with addiction and withdrawal issues or just seemed questionable in general. This was such a fast-paced and twisty read, and I had trouble putting it down!

Thank you, @netgalley, @bookmarked, and @catequinnauthor for the #gifted e-arc of this book!

It was an ok book I think you have to suspend belief to read it but it was okay .
I felt the plot was a bit contrived and in parts I had to make myself continue

I received a free ARC ebook of The Clinic from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

An isolated rehab clinic, difficult to reach under the best of circumstances, is the eerie setting for this murder mystery. The setting may be a familiar type to avid mystery readers and it is the star of this novel.

Megan is an undercover, poker-playing agent employed by casinos to find cheaters. She is adept at reading subtle body language cues but her own drug issues is her greatest problem. The death of her famous sister, Haley, at the rehab clinic sends her on the trail of who is responsible. Haley and Megan had a difficult childhood and their painful past led to addiction and estrangement.

The clinic is full of wealthy, bizarre individuals whose treatments are designed by a creepy medical team. The combination of addicts and rehab employees is a toxic mix of odd.

This novel is mostly enjoyable but I found the ending to be a little off-putting.

A thought provoking thriller that tackles the difficult topic of rehab. Fast paced, short chapters keep the story moving. Multiple and unreliable narrators help keep the reader feel off kilter and unsteady. A great twisty read for fans of McFadden and and Tarryn Fisher.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free ARC.

This book needs a lot more work. I can look past typos and grammatical errors, but the story itself was not cohesive and often contradicted itself. The characters were caricatures of themselves which made them entirely unbelievable. No one talks the way they supposedly did and it came off very cheesy. There were some interesting concepts of neurodivergence but not at all appropriately explained or portrayed. Personally, I have a very hard time believing an addict checking in to rehab could smuggle in drugs that easily (because it's just the receptionist doing a luggage check??) and have no one really notice or dole out consequences.

It's the start of an interesting story but doesn't come across as fully fleshed out.
