Although I found the free sampler of this story engaging and intriguing, it became apparent that I might not align perfectly with its intended audience. Nonetheless, I couldn't help but appreciate the uniqueness and depth of the characters presented within the limited excerpt. While my assessment is constrained by the limited scope of the sampler, I am left intrigued and eager to explore further to see where the narrative unfolds. As such, based on the portion I've read, I would cautiously assign a rating of 3 stars, acknowledging the potential for further development beyond the sampler's confines.
Such a great premise! This will likely be a must-read for any fans of X-men and contemporary YA fantasy. However, I must agree with a previous reviewer about feeling trepidation for any forthcoming relationship between Steven and Zachary. Really hoping the full text proves me wrong!
was a cute little story and sampler, but I wasn't intrigued enough to search out the full novel. I believe however that a younger person would love this!
I enjoyed the sampler and have added the full book to my to be read. Thank you for the preview. I haven't reviewed a sampler before and don't have much more to add to get to the one hundred characters.
The free sampler of this story was engaging and intriguing, though I do not think I am the target audience for the story.
The characters are unique and well fleshed-out, and am curious where the story goes from here. I feel as though I cannot give a full review as I only read what was provided in the sampler, but what I have read I can give 3 stars to.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for the free sampler.
I received an ARC for the first chapter from NetGalley in exchange for my review.
I thought that this first chapter was so good! I am very excited to read the rest of the story.
I do not read a lot of fantasy, but I am very excited to see what happens! It gives me a lot of "X-Men vibes". Plus, I always love when there are queer characters!
3.5 stars. Thank you netgalley for providing a preview of this book. I got to read the first hundred pages. It was a very ya-y found family type story. I have to say, I didn’t really like anyone other than Steven. I liked the storyline, but the magic system is meh to me. A little simplistic for my taste. I would like to read the rest of the story, but at this time I don’t have access.
I hadn't realised this was a free sampler, so it doesn't feel right rating it. I will be reading the whole thing, though, because it was intriguing enough
A nice little taster for YA queer X~Men.
The writing was fun and fast, though the first few chapters were a tad confusing (as if the first few chapters were missing) and it did feel like we were skimming the story, not getting into the story.
Did I like it? Yes, it was fun and I think many readers will like it. But did I love it and going to rush out a buy a copy? Not really. I might borrow from my local library so,eyime next year once I have my TBR shelves under some control…
After I got to the end of the 100-odd pages of the sampler I immediately had to read the rest of this book. I loved it. It was a really interesting premise. I enjoyed the humour weaved subtly throughout, there wasn’t too much and it wasn’t too cheesy. The romance wasn’t overpowering but was very cute in a teen but not annoying way. The varying personalities of all the characters balanced each other out fabulously. <spoiler>I expected Zachary was the bad one from the beginning so that wasn’t a surprise but, I hadn’t figured out that he was Dent so that was an interesting plot twist. But the one I never saw coming was Troy also having powers, genuinely had my mouth hanging open (which rarely happens) so, I was very impressed with that. Also, I absolutely loved Troy - my favourite character.</spoiler> I liked the writing style, especially for a debut novel. It was an easy read and hard to put down seeing that it was the first in a trilogy was a great surprise, I can’t wait to dive in to the story and characters more; I will definitely be reading the next one!
A good sample and definitely a read I want to get the full version of. I could see it being popular with my older young readers as well as adults.
Having read the free sampler, I am desperate to read more. A (closeted) gay 17yo Steven has powers - his emotions make things happen, almost opposite to the emotion he's feeling. Feeling happy? Bad things happen. Like blowing up your first kiss's head. This premise is explored very quickly over the first few pages, and we're greeted with a handy table that Steven uses to keep track of his powers. From the 100ish pages included in the sample, I would like to read more. It's fast paced, easy to read, fun and light. It has the hallmarks of supportive friends and romance, that I hope will be further explored. I would like to see more on the colours and other emomancers. My only criticism would be that some details differ between chapters, eg. Freya says Steven has been awol just over a week, but later it's three weeks, or the age that his powers first showed up is not consistent. Otherwise, it's an easy read, that I think is more suited to a younger crowd than I, and I'd like to finish the read!
I genuinely liked the concept of this book, but the writing style just was not something I was enjoying thoroughly. It felt very very unedited, more so than Netgalley normally is.
Usually, I read Adult Fantasy, but I decided to take a break from this genre and read something different. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to come across this book from this young author and once again to convince myself that the imagination of young people is truly unique. The book is a debut and it's definitely a great start.
Now a little about the story itself.
Overall, while I didn't find myself completely invested in the story, I do see the appeal of it.
However, what I liked most of all was the association of Steven's emotions with superpowers that were very different and interesting. That was the main thing that attracted me to the annotation initially. The characters were well built, there were no unnecessary things, and everything went easy and exciting. All the time we follow Steven who is trying to control his emotions and powers and I liked the development. Steven is definitely an interesting character, but I liked his girlfriend Freya too. There was a moment in the book where she wanted to find out if he was gay and immediately put a label on him and that I definitely didn't like it.
The ending was unexpected at least for me and I would like to read the sequel.
My rate is 3,5/5 stars Thank you NetGalley for the sampler and 'Readers First' for providing me with a copy of the book and I wish the new young author success with the next books.

All of my thoughts are my own~
Tentative 4 star but if the MC gets with an adult I am lowering this to a 1.5 star
Before I got to the last chapter this was a solid 4 star read for me. But once the MC, Steven Percival, was alone with the mysterious Zachary, learning to control his powers, I started to get the ick. And then the last page in my sampler ended with Zachary kissing him, which turned my stomach and my interest away from this book.
Steven is 17. Zachary is described as possibly in his 20s. As a fellow queer, I am truly so tired of the amount of, specifically, gay/MLM books where minors/17 year olds or just BARELY 18 year old young men get into very toxic, power imbalanced relationships with an adult partner. SO. BEYOND. TIRED.
Now, I have not seen any reviewers give spoilers for the whole book on IF this fully occurs or not, there is another love interest (is the only love interest???),Troy, who is the same age as the MC and I love him to bits.
Honestly I want to give the story the benefit of the doubt, so I may attempt to read the entire book at a later date as I am very attached to the rest of the story and characters, but this is just such a tiring trope and I really hope it doesn't develop into anything more.
So just, fair warning to all those out there interested in this book- deffo check out other reviews for context.
On to the positives:
I REALLY loved the main characters, Steven/Stevie/Percy, Troy, Freya, and Marcus, and their interactions with each other. So far I also like the few side characters I was introduced to as well. Everything about the characters was extremely well done and I loved the multiple POVs that the we, as the readers, are given to fully process every point in the story. The characters are all very fleshed out and are unique and clear individuals, which I love about a story like this.
Piggybacking here about the characters, having multiple characters and multiple POVs can be tricky, but I feel as if Fenne does a stellar job at swapping through all their POVs (which are in 1st person when it is their turn). I also feel as if each character stays consistent with their unique inner voices and personalities.
However, while this did not bother me at all as I am from the age of RPs and fanfiction being my main source of reading/writing as a young teen in the early 2000's, there are a few points in the POV swapping where the characters sorta respond to one another in their thoughts/feelings- I could see where it would not be to someone else's tastes.
Also in my sampler, one of the characters had a 1 line POV swap in the middle of another character's POV that I could see not being received very well neither, but again, it didn't bother me and actually made me chuckle!
All in all, I could tell these characters are very important to the author and feel very personal and I loved it.
The plot line is also very strong and unique and I don't think I have seen anything like it. Even Zachary, whomst I clearly do not like, has additional interesting lore and adds a lot of depth to the story already (minus the weird thing about flirting with a minor). Again, everything feels very fleshed out and unique, and a lot of care clearly went into each character and the plot.
I got to read the first 100 pages of Overemotional and it was a ride.
The whole premise of the book is very interesting and that’s what got me to read it. The execution was done well with a variety of teenage characters and their exquisite dialogue choices that made me laugh. I would have liked more POVs from others, but understandibly Steven is the main character 😄
At times the book got a bit boring as it repeated the whole drama again and again, but it is what the MC struggled with and as a reader I got to see his thought process evolve.
The writing style was easy to read and it made me laugh with the characters. But it lacked a bit of depth and that’s why I am giving it 4/5 ⭐️
Overall very enjoyable and the clifhanger makes me want to continue reading the full book.
Steven, being scared of his emotions and superpowers that are causing drama because of said emotions, headed to the god-forgotten town, that suddenly everyone knows how to get to, as his best friend follows him, her boyfriend and friend are following her, and some semi-professional agents in suits are following all of them to the middle-of-nowhere-by-the-sea town.
The story is told from different point-of-views, which doesn't ruin the fact that there is just one main character, but it does give fullness and explanation to the whole storyline. The book is a bit of a slow-burner with a plot dragging on at least for the first 50 pages, but it gives you a perfect feel of the atmosphere of the town Grunsby-on-Sea, and on the contrary, it gets you into the fast pace of Steven's thoughts and feelings that he is trying not to feel. I would call this narrative "teenage hormones turned into superpower struggles". And, honestly, definitely not in a bad way, as I found myself being invested in the story of what Steven will do and how will he learn to control his superpowers or even find a use for them. With the addition of sarcastic and not-so-much jokes, although I couldn't fully relate with Steven, at least I could sympathize with him.
I received a sample of the book (first 100 pages). I may continue reading this book one day to get a bit of a sense of activity while sitting on the couch and reminiscing about times of teenage angst, but, if this is becoming a trilogy, I think I won't be looking forward to following books. I'm too "coming-of-age" for this book to find much joy in it, but it should be a nice read for late teens/young adults.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Thankyou to NetGalley and black and white publishing for allowing me to read this arc!
Overemotional was a fun, quick and quirky queer read, i loved Stephen and Troy I found them so cute together, I particularly loved Troy as a character, he was cute, and fun to follow along and was really thought out! I did struggle with the multiple POVs along the way as it did make it a bit confusing, so potentially would confuse slightly younger teens. But this book was so fast paced, and I’m really looking forward to the next two books, I loved the queer representation through the book and the quotes at the start of the book “his head literally exploded” would draw so many teens in.
Thankyou for allowing me to read this, I love forward to the next two books

This book is a hard one for me to review. Did I hate it? No. But did I love it? Also, no.
I think that I might have just been the wrong audience for this book as I felt like this would have been better suited for someone a little younger than myself.
I did like the concept of Steven struggling with his emotions, but in a more ''magical'' way and the fact that he was going through his own sexuality struggles. Again, I think that this would be much more enjoyable for a younger audience as the writing seemed to be written in a juvenile way. This is not a terrible thing, just not me preferred style of writing.
This was only the sample that I was given to review, but unfortunately it won't be a book that I will be looking to continue.
Thank you #NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review this book
This books wasn’t quite for me for a number of reason. I should have looked closer at the descriptions of all character names as one was my deadname, which, at times, makes me uncomfortable - which is entirely on me.
The characters were well developed and I enjoyed the banter between them, particularly toward the start of the novel. I feel that my younger self would have enjoyed this greatly.
