"What the heck is going on?" This was my reaction throughout the book, really.
From start to finish, the characters kept acting impulsively. For Carmen, one day she was getting married, the next she left the country, suddenly went to a bar and then she started a scorching love story with Liam.
The ridiculously fast pace of the storyline didn't make any sense, I don't care how sure she was of him being the one and a trustworthy guy, it was super implausible.
.
The storyline turned stagnant after the first few chapters, it was basically chapter after chapter of Carmen and Liam hooking up, while the intimate scenes were well written, it was pretty boring after multiple chapters of just that.
Once the problems started to happen, the book resembled a 3/10 movie's script. I was really bewildered, trying to figure out what was happening and where the book was going.
.
After all of this drama, the epilogue came out of nowhere, it literally hit me in the face.
One day they were in danger and afraid for their lives, the next they were having a happily ever after. Just like that, no explanation whatsoever.
I think the book still needs a lot of editing, also, picking a specific genre to go with would be better since having multiple directions weren't well executed in the current manuscript.
*I received an ARC of this book through netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review*
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for this arc. I really enjoyed this story, I thought it was well written and entertaining.
This book was soooo good! I didn't think I'd finish in time for my #booktour date, but it was so good, I couldn't put it down! I'm a pretty big chicken when it comes to anything scary, and this one definitely had a few tense moments, but I survived so you can too! There was also just enough steam to make it a good romance without making it excessively descriptive lol. Romance-suspense is definitely the right genre haha. Plus with Boston mob bosses, steamy one-night stands, picturesque details about Halifax and Boston, this one definitely gets lots of stars from me!
An entertaining book to read overall though I'm sorry to say that I did not like the ending for me there were too many loose ends... I mean it just ended and didn't let the readers know what happened to Carmen and Liam
A lie might hurt, but the truth can kill.
On the eve of her wedding to Mark, Carmen's world is shattered into a million pieces. Forced to make an impossible decision that will determine the rest of her life, she dares to chart her own course. While trying to start over again, she finds herself alone and far from the home she knew in Nova Scotia.
When she meets Liam, a handsome carpenter and business owner in Boston, her world is once again flipped on its axis. The attraction is undeniable, and the unimagined possibilities of her life tempt her into happiness again. But things that seem too good to be true, usually are.
As if there isn't enough on her plate, she's forced to deal with an ex-fiancé who won't give up and a violent attack that lands her in the hospital. Unravelling the truth behind this seemingly random attack and Liam's past proves to be far more than she bargained for. She's now forced to face the truth, that everyone has secrets. Some are hurtful, and some are downright deadly.
When their old and new lives collide, Carmen desperately wants to protect everything she's gained, including Liam, but at what cost?
The Lying Kind is a steamy novel, following Carmen, who has just found out that her fiancé of 10 years has been having an affair with one of her bridesmaids for years. She leaves him at the alter and drives until she can’t anymore. She finds herself outside of Boston, and as fate would have it, she meets Liam. Right off the bat, their connection is electric. She is drawn to him, and he to her, but is there connection too good to be true? Liam is hiding a big secret that changes everything and could alter Carmen’s life forever.
This book was really well written, and is a page turner! I only wish the ending would have been tied up better. It had the potential to be a really powerful ending, but was lackluster. There wasn’t much of a twist, but the plot unravels about 80% of the way through the book. Some side character development could have been cut out of the middle of the book to make room for a little more ending. Overall, the book was spicy and action packed and I liked it!
A great suspenseful well written romance with intriguing characters and a unique story line. A fun read.
Gripping start and refreshingly entertaining throughout.
Carmen starts our with a cliché, the only boyfriend she's ever had turns out to be a scumbag and she runs away, straight into Liam's perfectly toned, strong, tattooed arms. By this point, you can't help being already hooked into the plot and Carmen is so relatable and wonderfully written, that it's a challenge to not read this in one sitting, I had a few family obligations to attend to and each time I had to put this down, I was frustrated at the interruptions.
Liam's past is revealed slightly in an abrupt fashion and the ending feels rushed, especially since the suspense at the end is so intense. I would have needed a few more chapters to cool down and to wrap up the loose ends.
I'm not going to lie, at times it does read like a debut novel, but such a promising start.
Special thanks to C. B. London and Champagne Book Group for the ARC. Looking forward to read what you come up with next!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of The Lying Kind by C.B. London.
Ever since I saw this cover, I've coveted this book. I discovered an absolutely riveting read, full of simmering chemistry and heart-pounding action. The story opens on Carmen's wedding and the discovery her future husband, Mark, is a cheating dog. She runs off to Boston and into the arms of stranger, Liam. A one-night stand turns into a steamy love affair, but Carmen's past in Halifax and Liam's history with a notorious mob family threaten the future they are building.
I really enjoyed the Lying Kind and I'm excited for what the author does next!
A promising, smoking debut!
C.B. London's talent shines in this romance-forward romantic suspense. From a hook-y start with a bride on the run to a final 25% that had me reading wide-eyed while I walked through the grocery store, this spicy debut has me ready to read whatever London has coming up next.
I was thoroughly pulled into the intrigue and suspense of this story, but it was the romance arc that really sang. London has a gift for putting those butterflies right in the reader's belly, leaning fully into the squirmy, blushing flirtation and romantic gooey-ness that makes me love reading romance. And when the characters get steamy--hold on to your hats! London perfectly balances heat and spice with communication and clear, enthusiastic consent. In other words, her sex scenes are H-O-T.
London does a beautiful job of exploring what it means to move on from a relationship while still holding onto the memories of how another person has impacted and changed you, while also tackling what it means to move on and build something new. And while all the extras of this book are a thrill-ride (a cancelled wedding! mobsters from the past! a super hot love interest who builds stuff!), at its core it is a well-told story of a woman determined to find her own way, fight to protect herself, and create the life that she deserves.
Can't wait to read more from this author!
This was a spectacular debut from this author! If this is her first book, I can't wait to see what she has in the future because it certainly didn't read as a first-time writer. I loved everything about this book -- the plot, the pacing, the characters -- it was the perfect romantic suspense in my opinion. The Lying Kind is a page-turner -- I couldn't put it down once I started reading and when I had to, I was grabbing my Kindle as soon as possible to get back to it. I really felt for Carmen -- she certainly has her share of unexpected life changes, but it was the way Ms. London wrote this character that made me feel everything she was experiencing. The feelings of moving on from a long-term relationship while still trying to hold onto the memories of that relationship were palpable. And Liam was so much more than I had anticipated! I so enjoyed the way Ms. London wrote his character -- a bit secretive--just enough to keep you guessing, a lot possessive and sexy without being arrogant. These characters were well-developed and excellently written. Add in the twists and turns and shockers that were quite unexpected! Whew, this was romantic suspense at its best. I'm hoping the way this book ended that we'll get a sequel -- fingers crossed! I thoroughly and completely enjoyed this read and will most definitely read whatever Ms. London publishes in the future -- she just became a one-click author for this reader. I'm very grateful to have been given the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of this book through NetGalley.
i loved the book i loved the thriller vibes and how one guy wasnt good for her but she met another I loved reading between their problems and their different guys and how she got pregnant towards the end. it was really good. 5 stars!
I have never read a book quite like this and I was at the edge of my seat. There was romance and suspense and it was just perfectly weaved together. The main character was a bit too weak for my taste - she stays with a cheater; then because she can't be alone jumps into a relationship with Liam. Also I grew up in Boston and eew why would someone ever willingly live there? But other than that this was a great book and I would read more.
There were a lot of events packed into a relatively short timeline, poor Carmen, but the plot didn't seem rushed and the cadence of the story was perfect. I often get annoyed with characters in romance novels but I found Carmen and Liam quite likeable. The story kept me engaged and I kept wanting to read 'just one more chapter', I ended up finishing it in two days and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
Really, I’m giving this one 4.5 out of 5 stars because it was just that good. Getting approved to read The Lying Kind by C. B. London was exciting because of the description. Woman leaves cheating ex at the altar, Woman attempts to start over in Boston and ends up meeting a handsome man that was supposed to be a one night stand. Enter suspense, humor, and well developed central characters. This was such a page turner, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I laughed out loud at some witty remarks concerning Mark. I sat up to read when the suspense kept me at the edge of my seat. I loved that the love story between Liam and Carmen was nicely put together. It wasn’t overdone, which made it super realistic. While the ending was sudden, I don’t particularly hate it just because the event that leads to the end is not something that can be easily wrapped up. I do, however, wish I got to know how things wrapped up with Mark, and since we didn’t get that, it left me wanting. Same thing could be said about some characters that almost became fillers by the end. Overall, The Lying Game was a solid read and well written. I’d definitely read more by C. B. London and highly recommend The Lying Game to others!
