The twist in this book (about halfway through) was amazingly done. I was so shellshocked that I had to go back some pages to make sure I hadn't missed something obvious.
This is the story of sisters, of a broken family and the pieces left behind. This is the story of cruel teenage friendships and murder. Plum, Lu and Izzy are friends, until they aren't. Three girls go to a party at Turtle Lake and only two return. The story itself is told by Finn, Izzy's younger sister, as well as through snippets of Izzy's teenage diary and news reports. I normally don't like when different mediums are used to tell the story, as it normally takes me right out of it (or proves irrelevant to the story) but in this case, I found it all very cleverly done.
This was a fast-paced and exciting, as well as heartbreaking read. I loved it.
Truly Darkly Deeply is one of my absolute favourite thrillers, and so I was super excited to see Victoria had written a new one. And anyone who shares my name instantly earns at least one gold star in my reviews before I've even opened the book.
This is just what I was expecting. It's thrilling and twisty turny, and emotional, and frightening, and so well written and accomplished. It reads like a proper true crime story and it has you caught in its net right from the very first chapter.
I'm not going to spoil it, obviously, but it has so many twists and turns it'll have you audibly gaping at what direction it's taking, and you have to reread bits, so shocked at new developments. In fact, now I've finished it, I might reread it, knowing what I do now, I wonder if it would read differently.
Victoria is great at manipulating her storyline in order to manipulate the reader. You're never 100% sire that what you're reading is right, you don't know who or what to trust or believe. It takes someone special to be able to write like that and it still be an entertaining and enjoyable read.
This isn't a linear story. It has the main present timeline, which I suppose is linear, but it flashes back to before the incident, and straight after the incident. It's a brilliant way of dropping clues and offering suspects. It builds up the tension which is exactly what you want for this genre of book.
It's not always the easiest thing to read. There are some shocking scenes and topics that leave an unsavoury taste in your mouth, but they really help to increase the discomfort you feel at reading this story. And it makes you think about good vs evil: are people 100% one or the other, are there shades of both, can we truly know who another person is?
This is more than a missing-person as such. It has such depth. It's a lost child mystery, a murder mystery, a psychological thriller. It really makes you question everyone and everything.
It is brilliantly created with the perfect pacing, fabulous characters, a thrilling plot, and a shocking conclusion. Considering how thrilling and topsy turvy it is, it is a really easy read. I read it in just two sittings. It flows off the page and you're just constantly eager for more, more. more.
This may only be the second book of hers I have read, but she's definitely up there with the best thriller writers around, and she'll be one that I keep an eye out for, when it comes to new books to read.
I jumped at the opportunity to read Victoria's new book. I enjoyed her debut novel Truly Darkly Deeply and I knew I would enjoy this one too.
We follow the story of Finn and Izzy. They are sisters and couldn't be any different. Izzy went through mutism when her Mum passed away and finally came back out of her shell. She started at a new school and met two friends (she has never had a friend before) Plum and Lu. Finn didn’t trust her new friends and no-one would listen to her. The girls went to a party at Turtle Lake and only two of them came home. Told in two time frames of before and after told in Finn's voice, we also get snippets from Izzy's diary that helps us fill in the blanks. What happened that night? And why have two of the friends confessed to murder? Trust me when I say you should go in to this book blind.
All the Little Liars is an absolute page turner. It is a disturbing read full of toxic friendships, loss of a parent, sisterly love and manipulation/grooming. It is well written and feels like a true crime story when reading. It keeps you wanting all the answers until the last sentence.
Thank you Netgalley and Quercus books for a gifted copy of this book for my honest review.
Three girls go to a party and only two return. The two girls then admit to killing their friend. WHY???? This is one hell of a read. A real rollercoaster, twisty as hell and very provocative. The story is told in dual time lines and slowly a whole picture is revealed. I found this book very hard to put down and finally turned the last page at 2am. Yes this book is that good. Highly recommended and almost fives stars. Loved It!!!!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the Arc in return for an honest review.
Well this was a bloody good read, wasn’t it! The dual narrative was brilliant for telling this story and the plot was brilliant
I’m going to keep this as short as possible cos I’m actually terrified to slip up and spoil something. Believe me when I tell you All the Little Liars is one you should go into with as little prior knowledge as possible, just dive in and enjoy the twisty and twisted ride it provides.
All the Little Liars is the story of thirteen-year-old Izzy, Plum and Lu, and a life-changing event that takes place one dark night at Turtle Lake, California. It is told from the perspective of Izzy’s younger sister Finn, alternating before, after and now chapters, which are interspersed with newspaper snippets, chat room discussions, short interviews, etc. Put like that, it might sound a little messy but it’s really not. It paints such a complete and rich picture. Moreover, it never failed to trigger me to read just one more chapter (which, obviously, was never just one more chapter). It did make for a very addictive story.
While I do enjoy the occasional popcorn thriller, I absolutely love psychological thrillers that zoom in on the actual psychological aspect of things, which is the type of story I’ve come to expect from Victoria Selman, especially after Truly, Darkly, Deeply, and she definitely delivers with All the Little Liars.
It’s not easy to hit that right note of an essentially psychological story that is also highly entertaining, but All the Little Liars pulls it off. It not only made me ponder the story and its characters, but also myself as a reader, all the while keeping me glued to my Kobo. Very impressive!
All the Little Liars is a totally engrossing, twisty, yet plausible thriller and I had a fantastic time with it. I loved how pretty much all the characters are liars and the more it progressed the less sure I was what to believe. Maybe you are savvier than I am and see certain things coming, but for me, the world went topsy-turvy for a moment there and I had to take a minute to pick up my jaw. I would happily recommend All the Little Liars to fans of the genre.
All the Little Liars is out in hardcover, digital formats and audio on 31 August, with the paperback to follow next year.
Massive thanks to Quercus and NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
Three friends go to a party, but only two return. Chapters change from the present to the lead up to the disappearance of one of the girls. The narrator is the younger sister of one of the girls at the party. She has since changed name and country to avoid association with the infamous crime. Throughout the book, we learn about the lead up to the crime and the aftermath of it - the effects on relatives.
This is a great book, although Teen Fiction genre, I enjoyed it as an adult. It gripped me more and more as I progressed through the book and has a satisfactory conclusion, in that the truth is finally unmasked.
An excellent read that I would highly recommend.
Wow!… Tense and captivating… Full of twists and turns and shocks!… Raced through it, eager to find out the ending – which was just brilliant!
I really enjoyed this book. At lot of twists and turns. Some tough subject matter but dealt with well. The ending felt a little rushed but overall, a great book
In 2003 3 teenagers go to a party but only 2 return. The narrator is the sister of one of the girls, a dual timeline of then and now.
To enjoy this amazing read I would definitely say less is more and to go into this book blind.
OMG I so had this book wrapped up in my mind m, but I couldn't have been more wrong, as a huge twist had me rereading to make sure I hadn't missed anything.
A must read that will have you enthralled from the beginning to the end.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
This one missed the mark for me. I found the Before, After and Now timelines to be confusing and at times repetitive. I don't want to give anything away but the ending and reveal were a bit blah and left me with too many questions because it just didn't make sense to me.
It's a pretty quick read with short chapters and I did like the newspaper articles etc that are dispersed throughout.

I am so glad I read this book!! It's incredible!! Incredible characters, amazing story and a twist in the middle that blew my mind. I did not see that coming!!! Highly, highly recommended xx
Izzy is an introvert with no friends but then she finds Plum & Lu who take her into the friendship group. Her life becomes complete & she is so happy but what path are they actually leading her down.
A story told from the perspective of her sister who was only 10 years old & is now wracked with guilt at what she knew & what she wishes she said before it all turned bad.
It’s a great book with a BANG!
Thank you NetGalley & Victoria Selman for a great read. 4.5 stars.
Three girls got to a party in Turtle Lake and only two return. They later confess they murdered their friend but is this the truth?
I still have Truly Darkly Deeply to read (the previous book by Victoria Selman), therefore had no idea what to expect from her new offering. I was definitely not disappointed! I really enjoyed the plot, pacing and writing style. I loved the fact that the chapters were short and snappy, focusing on before and after, as well a being broken up by short newspaper and television articles. The book starts off a bit predictable but you quickly realise that nothing is as it seems and a very dark, unexpected story emerges.
The characters were well written and you feel like you really get to know them. The only thing that I wasn’t as keen on was that I felt the ending was a bit sudden and less impactful than the rest of the story. Overall though, a brilliant, thrilling read and I will be racing now to read her previous book. 4.5 stars. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this copy in return for an honest review.
This is the second book I have read by this author. I enjoyed the first and this was no different. Like other reviewers it is best if you do not know to much about the story and just let it 'wash' over you. It is written, like so many books at the moment with writing in the current timeframe and then in the past. It is told through the eyes of the younger sister and tells of the devastating effect the events of that night have on everyone involved.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quercus for the advance copy of this book
Really good story, set in the present and 20 years ago when a young girl is murdered.
Three girls go to a party and only two come home. All the girls have been under the influence of a charismatic teacher who has been grooming them and others.
So what really happened? We hear the story through the eyes of the little sister of one of the girls.
Good story, well written.
The plot is as deep and dark as it gets, multi-layered with 'who knew what when?' as the strands come together and the finer details get filled in. This is an absolutely compelling, gripping book full of mystery and suspense. Only a few authors can write deeply involving psychological drama of the very highest quality.
The E-Book could be improved and more user-friendly, such as links to the chapters, no significant gaps between words and a cover for the book would be better. It is very document-like instead of a book. A star has been deducted because of this.
This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
What a read! It's best to read it without knowing too much. All you need to know is that 3 girls go to a party, Only 2 return and they confess to murdering the other.
It's well written from the point of view of one of the girl's sister (Finn) and goes between two main time frames, the time of the crime and twenty years later when Finn is still trying to make sense of it all.
Finn is a memorable character and is well drawn as are all the characters including the three girls at the centre of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This is one of those books which confounds you at every turn. It is also one of those books that is best read without knowing too much about the story beforehand.
Victoria Selman has written an exceptionally twisty and provocative story about just what teenage girls are and are not capable of (hint: probably both more and less than you think...)
In 2003, a young girl goes missing at a party at Turtle Lake, in Carlsbad, California. Nearby, a tree trunk is found with the word liar scrawled on it in blood.
Three girls went out together that night, but only two came back. And they confessed afterwards to killing their friend. But why would they have done that? And are girls so young actually capable of murder?
The story is told in dual timelines, much of it from the perspective of the younger sister of one of the girls. Kat shares snippets from her sister Izzy's diary to provide insight as to what really happened, and why.
Parts of this book are actually very disturbing, since it examines themes of toxic friendships and dangerous manipulation at close quarters. But it is gripping read. Selman has definitely pulled off another winner with this novel, and proved that she is a writer to watch.
Well I nearly put this down as struggled a bit to start, but I'm so glad I didn't, a great story, did start to guess the twist at the end, but didn't spoil the enjoyment, an all round great read
