Finn and Izzy, sisters, but very different. Outgoing, friendly Finn and the more subdued, hard to make friends Izzy. After a bout of selective mutism brought on by the shock of the sudden death of their mother, Izzy is is regarded as aloof and weird by her contemporaries, and has no friends. Dita, their much loved housekeeper/surrogate mother worries, but the girls father, a much revered judge, says she will be fine, just let her find her own way. Oh boy, does she! After moving to a more selective and smaller school, Izzy makes friends with Plum and Lu and her life changes. Disliked by Finn from the start, Plum is arrogant, controlling and very much the leader, with Izzy and Lu only too happy to follow. When the mysterious and charismatic Ryder appears all the girls are smitten and jealousy soon takes over the friendship.
This book is very good, a proper page turner. When the first shock comes halfway through I had to reread to make sure I was reading correctly! A shocker! I love a book that makes you question what you have just read.
The timeline changes worked well and really kept the suspense up.
I think the Ryder character needed more background, but apart from that I was invested in all the MCs.
Definitely one to recommend.
Thank you NetGalley.
Truly Darkly Deeply by Victoria Selman was in of my favourite books last year. I was keen to see what she would have in store for us next and I was not at all disappointed. A page turning thriller that reads like True crime, it kept me reading late into the night. As with her previous book, the twist will have your head spinning and make your question everything that you thought you knew about this story.
2003, Turtle Lake. 3 young girls go to a party but only 2 come home. What happened and why? We hear the story from the youngest sister of one of the girls, a now and then tale. To say anything more would be to say too much. Go into this as blindly as you can you will not be sorry. My only concern about this story was that the girls were meant to be 13 and 10. They seemed to be doing and stating things well about that age. Maybe it was just me, but my girls weren’t like that at that age.
Thanks to Quercus Books and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Published on August 31st.
All the Little Liars is my second read by author, Victoria Selman. I read Truly, Deeply, Darkly earlier this year and was hooked on the authors strong narrative style and well-written mystery. I’m happy to report that this one is just as good, perhaps even better. Told across multiple timelines, this one will suck you in and keep you wanting more. It’s not often I’m blindsided by a book but this one got me good. This one mixes thriller with family drama and crosses it with an intense and horrifying mystery. The story and setting are easy to immerse yourself in and you won’t even notice the pages flying by. I can’t get enough of this author. I’ve downloaded to my Kindle the Ziba MacKenzie series and am eager to dive into that one soon.
Izzy Jackman is a 13 year old and quite lonely girl without any friends. However she is befriended by Plum and Lu and is soon under Plum's spell. One night the three girls go to a party at Turtle Beach but only two of them return home and the third girl is later found dead. The other two girls admit to killing their friend but did they and, if so, why? After the tragedy Izzy's father and sister relocate to the UK. Twenty years later Finn. or Kat as she now calls herself, is still wondering what really happened on the night of the murder.
I was half way through the book convinced I knew what was happening when suddenly there was a massive twist which made me flick back to the start as I thought I'd missed out some pages!
This is the first book I have read by this author but it won't be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A Great Psychological Mystery with Plenty Twists and Turns
I do not want to give too much away about this book All the Little Iiars by Victoria Selman, but this is A great psychological read. Victoria Selman is an exceptionally talented and very clever writer! The book is exploring the mystery of who murdered a 13-year-old girl at Turtle Lake. Three friends went out, only two returned, what secrets are they hiding? The three share a toxic relationship and the question is of how far would you go to fit in?
The story is told from the then 10yr old Finn with her observation and lack of knowledge and understanding all lend nicely to more twists and unexpected turns as the story unfolds. The fact that this book flits back and forth from the present day to the past really helps to keep the reader gripped to the very last page. It allows us to get a deeper understanding of the events that led up to the murder and the characters and their situations all influence the narration of the story. You also learn more about each of the girls as the book provides a wonderful way for the reader to begin imagining what could have led to someone committing such a horrific crime.
I thought it was very well done and the manipulation by the author is clever especially over the dual timelines while slowly revealing secrets and revelations throughout the book leading to a good ending with more twists and turns whilst keeping the reader hooked to the very last page. This is the first book I have read by Victoria Selman, and I found it a genuinely nice book which flows nicely with great characters and a real page turner that I could not put down. I highly recommend this book. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a book that hooks you from the begginning and you have to keep reading to find out what happenned. The two timelines are both very intersting which helps you continue to read without getting bored and just continously flipping through the pages to know what really happened in that party.
The twist really surprised me, I dropped my kindle because I was shocked by that reveal.
There were some things that were not very well explained, so I can only give it four stars because the end coud have a little more between the main characters after everything that happened.
I would recommend this book to everyone that likes a good mystery/thriller, teenager drama and a good twist.
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for giving me this ARC!
A shocking pyschological mystery thriller, told over dual timelines, with lots of twists and turns - also shout out to the Criminal Minds references!
'It didn't occur to either of them that having friends can sometimes kill a person too'.
Synopsis
I won't go massively into the synopsis as I don't want to give too much away, but I had to re-read a couple of pages to make sure what I had read was correct from the twist of it!
The story is set over dual timelines - 2003 and 20 years later - exploring the mystery of who murdered a 13 year old girl at Turtle Lake. Three friends went, only two returned, what secrets are they hiding?
Thoughts
The revelations, toxic relationships and the question of 'how far would you go to fit in?' I thought it was very well done over the dual timelines, slowly revealing secrets and revelations throughout and keeping you hooked.
A great pyschological read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quercus Books for this copy. This review is voluntary.
Overall an entertaining book that is easy to read. I read it in two days!
This was an insightful and entertaining book that focuses on a lot of relatable issues.
I found it interesting to see how easily unhealthy relationships can be formed and developed. The trauma of coping with parental grief is clearly very disturbing. Sadly life is full of challenges like that. This book shows some of problems that are thrown up as a result.
It was also enlightening to discover that predators can be drawn to those who have anxiety about fitting-in to society. That was a powerful! message. All families should be made aware of this kind of danger and try to be more helpful when faced with this kind of problem encountered by their children when growing up.
The sisters relationship was particularly sad in so many ways. I get on well with my two sisters and would have found it hard to be helpless on the sidelines as the plot evolved.
What ride this was. Two 13 year olds admitting to committing murder and being sentenced with such severity. The blurb in front of the book gave you the impression that the two girls were not guilty and so all the ay through the book I was wondering who did actually murder Plum. The scene has been set throughout that the suspected person kept me changing my mind.
A great book that will keep any reader wanting to know more. I had to sit up half way through the night to finish this and I lapped up all the given hints as they kept turning up.
Highly recommend this to anyone who likes a good mystery
I loved the author's previous novel Truly, Darkly, Deeply, so was thrilled to have the opportunity to read All the Little Liars.
This is a superb dual timeline novel, set in 2003 and 20 years later, that explores the impact on a family of a 13 year old girls disappearance from Turtle Lake in California in 2003. I was completely drawn into this novel and the character of Finn. It is a beautifully written, compelling and intense read with a breath taking twist that I would highly recommend. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
This is an interesting book that starts off with a nice pace. I am happily reading trying to see where I think it will all lead and then wow - one line halfway through the story completely turns this book on its head. The manipulation of the reader by the author is just so clever. After this the book really moves up a gear and leads to a really good ending with more twists and turns. It’s well written and has a somewhat unconventional layout but works really well. My only gripe being the Before Now and After - felt these would have been better as dates, but that’s just a personal opinion. I will be looking at other books from Victoria Selman as I was very impressed with this one 4.5⭐️
Turtle Lake. July 17, 2003: Three friends went to a party. Only two came back…
A gripping, yet sad, tale of the Jackman family and how murder and lies has affected them all. This reads like a true crime story and the author has a clever and unique writing style. I feel like I learned things in parts of this book, which I enjoyed. The research that has gone in to the psychology was obvious, and paid off, making it a believable story.
I’d have liked Ryder’s part to have been explored a bit more though. I felt he had a key part to play and that his character disappeared a little too early in the book.
4/5 - would read from this author again.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy.
A clever and thrilling read that will keep you on your toes!
‘None of us know what we are capable of until we’re pushed … does violence make us monsters or human?’
Such an engaging and incredible read. I loved this book and was absolutely hooked from the moment I picked it up. Victoria Selman is a talented and very clever writer!
This book contains several pivotal moments, which will make you question everything you’ve read. Most notably the first, which I ended up reading several times, because I was so sure that there was an error in the book, as opposed to a miss interpretation on my side!
‘Be careful salt and sugar look the same.’
The duality of the characters and their situations all influence the narration of the story which is told from the then 10yr old Finn. Her observation and lack of knowledge or understanding all lend themselves nicely to more twists and unexpected turns. I love how the book seamlessly flickers between ‘Then’, ‘After’ and ‘Now’. Reading the book in this way, along with the choice of narrator really explores how the choices and actions the characters make end up being their downfall.
The ending is neat. But I couldn’t help feeling like it was lacking something. It doesn’t have the engagement or the thrill that the rest of the book had set a standard. I also would’ve liked to have further explored Grady‘s character. For a character that had such a big influence for most of the book he just vanished!
Overall, though, this is a thoroughly enjoyable read and I highly recommend it to anyone that is reading this review.
Thank you to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange from my honest review.
I absolutely will not give you any spoilers about this book!
Apart from to say that it is brilliantly written. Don’t read the blurb, don’t read the reviews, just read the book and let it unfold.
This is the second book I have read by this author and she does not disappoint.
Thank you to Quercus books and Net Galley for the copy in exchange for my unbiased review.
All The Little Liars by Victoria Selman
What an incredible murder mystery book! I cannot recommend this enough for lovers of really psychological mystery books.
Firstly, the plot is unique to other books I've read recently from this genre. I started this book thinking that the plot was obvious and just waiting for the finer details to be revealed. However, the further you read the more you begin to think that everything is not quite as it seems. Then, all the ideas and explanations you've been building in your head begin to slowly unravel as the action takes a drastic turn. It's very hard to say much about the plot without giving too much away, so I will simply say that it had me so totally invested that I couldn't bare to look away.
The fact that this book flits back and forth from the present day to the past really helps to keep the reader gripped. It also allows us to get a deeper understanding of the events that led up to the murder, learn more about each of the characters and provides a really great way for the reader to begin imagining what could possibly have led to someone committing such an horrific crime. The inclusion of the newspaper/radio articles, police reports and online messages from group forums (such as reddit) was a great addition that I really liked.
You can tell that the author spent a lot of time really diving into the minds of her characters and analysing the psychological reasons why people may kill. She also provides a very insightful look at how vulnerable young girls can be, especially after facing childhood trauma. I must commend the author for the way she has written and portrayed mental health in a very realistic way within this book. I felt very attached to the Jackman family throughout, and became emotional when they went through such hardships, as I was rooting for them to have a happy ending, no matter how unlikely that seemed.
Overall I thought this was an outstanding novel and, once again, I would highly reccomend. Some parts are very tough to read due to the horrific events taking place, but this really just made me more invested in the storyline and characters. This book contains a lot of hard topics that may be triggering for some people, so bare this in mind.
I rated this 5 out of 5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley and Victoria Selman for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a page turner thriller with a brilliant twist half way about a 20 year old murder which two young teenage girls confessed to committing. Told both then and now through the eyes of a younger sister who lost not only her sister but her mother figure, her home and even her identity in the aftermath of the tragedy. The story was gripping especially seeing how a lonely girl was so desperate to be accepted she couldn’t see what was truly happening. I found some elements of the final revelations didn’t quite sit right with me but overall it’s a great crime read.

Wow!! This book, I was addicted to reading this. It was just what I needed to read.
I enjoyed how the story was broken up into chapters of Then, Now, After, Newspaper Articles, Izzy’s diary entries and Interviews. I really thought I was reading a true crime incident at times. The Disclaimer at the beginning of the book says it was inspired by various true crime cases.
Finn was such a likeable character, You really go through the turmoil she’s going through.
Some parts of the story can be very triggering so please be aware, at times it gave me ‘Manson Family’ vibes.
Overall a great twisty story and I will definitely be picking up more by this author.
Thanks so much to @netgalley , Quercus Books and Victoria Selman for this ARC
100% recommend. Out August 31st!

Thank you to @victoriaselmanauthor and @quercusbooks for allowing me to read and review this ARC. I adored reading ‘Truly, Darkly , Deeply’ so was very excited to get stuck into this one and wow did it deliver! Short chapters to keep the action moving along with news articles, messages and other media that help develop the story. So many twists and turns meaning my face was mostly like 😱 when reading. Excellent thriller novel. 10/10 recommend!
All The Little Liars is out on 31/08/2023- preorder now!
Victoria makes it so easy to read about crime; holding the reader captive, ignoring all else that is 'life', until the very end. Such a great read!
What I loved was, that I thought I'd figured out the plot (felt smug) but no!!! I read the book on my kindle and had to go back and double check what I had read. I honestly thought there was a typo or that I had accidentally skipped a few pages!
Thanks, NetGalley for an advance copy 😊
All the little liars is a GREAT story! I struggled to put this down
When you start reading, you follow the story and think that what happened is pretty clear. A girl is murdered and her two friends are accused of the crime.
The further you get in the book, you will notice not everything as it seems
Hihgly recommend!
