Wow! What a story. This truly outstanding feminist work makes you proud to be a woman but also highlights how far women still have to go in the world of medical rights.
The characters are amazing and you find yourself rooting for them the whole way. The plot takes unexpected twists and turns and is exciting throughout. The main character, Hannah is lovable but also fierce and fascinating.
A truly eye opening story which has opened me up to the world of historical fiction- a genre I’m usually not keen on. I would recommend wholeheartedly to anybody who appreciates a gritty girl-power story with a bit more depth to it.
One of the best reads this year! In the Hands of Women is a story that has it all, history, mystery, politics, and romance. Set against the backdrop of the women's suffragette movement and the mass influx of European immigrants of the 1900s, Hannah, a Jewish doctor, fights to find her place in the male-dominated medical world of John Hopkins in Baltimore, specifically in the emerging field of obstetrics.
After navigating the prejudices women face, she finds a position at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, but her world will turn upside down when she is accused of a shocking crime. Amidst the chaos that ensues, she discovers the urgent need to reform women’s medical care, including contraception. Through Hannah’s journey, you will be captivated by her determination and courage in the face of adversity.
I very much enjoyed this easy read although from a historical perspective it felt a little "thin". This was a fascinating time for women and I would have liked more factual detail to anchor the excellent plot line in a time and place.
The writing is terrific - very grounded and pacey. I was drawn in to the story and read this in no time at all.
I would have no problem giving this 5 stars if the historical side was stronger
Thank you for the ARC!
