This was a cute book, but it was definitely meant for a younger audience. The plot was fairly basic and predictable,
with a fairly common message about feminism. I would have loved this book in middle school, but as an older teen, it felt a little juvenile to me. It was also incredibly short, but still sweet.
I love Jesse Sutanto's style! She can write it all! I enjoyed the FMC and her gamer girl persona. It was a fun concept and was a breeze to read. A little predictable in the story, but I enjoyed it the entire way!
A solid Teen Romance set in Jakarta, focusing around toxic masculinity and sexism in online gaming (and irl) and a fantastic/satisfying catfish-adjacent love story! No notes really, I think all of the social commentary was well done and very clear/nuanced, the romance was great, it just didn't necessarily knock me out of the park. It is a solid YA Romance novel and a very engaging read, but not super showy or out there.
Thank you to Random House Children's and Delacorte Press for this ARC! I am a big Dial A for Aunties girlie and when I saw another Jesse Q. Sutanto YA book available, I knew I had to go for it. Jesse's writing style is one I know I can always rely on when I need a fluffy, funny book, and this one didn't disappoint! It is essentially a young adult version of You've Got Mail and A Cinderella Story which sold me completely on it. While, yes, it is a romance book, and teens using the word love is eh for me, I really enjoyed how organic the chemistry between Liam and Kiki was. There are some of the supporting characters I was meh about, but I understood how they contributed to the plot. The topic of sexism was handled really well throughout through a relatable lens that I as a young adult librarian could see teens understanding. One thing I love about Sutanto is how she unabashedly and authentically presents Asian culture through her work and gives insight to those of us who may not have that insight or experience. Overall, if you need a cute, fluffy, quick YA romance to read, I say pick it up.
This one was cute, but not really for me because it was kind of cringey. I do recognize, though, that I am not the target audience for this book and I think some of my teens would really like this one.
Thanks, Netgalley and Publisher for this advanced copy.
23 years living in Jakarta, Indonesia and I felt like remembering my high school day when I read this. Except, that Kiki was studying in elite high school, but I studied in common public high school, The culture was everything I loved. Like how Indonesian mothers would be freaking out if they know their daughters dating in age 16. Lol, I am 23 and my mom still like that.
Also the romance was cute, but I didn't think the drama by the end of book was needed.
Overall, I liked this book and made me want to go back to my high school days.
Jesse Q. Sutanto is becoming auto-read author for me. All of her books leave me with more than just a good story, I always learn or feel something. This book was no different. The heavy hitting topics in this book are so crucial to be discussed. I think this book will resonate well with many middle and high school students. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review!
My ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I didn’t expect this to be such a heavy topic (bullying, online rape/death threats via gaming, social media trolling, institutional sexism) in what I thought would be a mostly lighthearted YA book but the author wove the story together seamlessly and it was enjoyable while I still learned about these heavy issues.
Jesse Q. Sutanto is rapidly becoming a must-read for me. Even when I don't outright love her books, I find them really fun and satisfying diversions.
This follow-up to Well, That Was Unexpected may not have left me cackling as much as the first one, but if I were writing one sentence cover blurb it would be along the lines of "a sitcom worthy high school rom-com perfect for fans of Never Have I Ever!" and that's not faint praise.
Cute story about Kiki, whose parents have transferred her to a new school for her senior year. She has a disastrous first day and earns the name "Crazy Kiki". Her only solace comes from talking to her online friend in a video game. Of couse, she later finds out that her online friend is also a student in her grade at school. And she knows exactly who it is. So, in true You've Got Mail fashion, Kiki tries to keep the online relationship going without letting him know who she is.
This was a really cute story. I am a fan of Sutanto's books, and this one did not disappoint. I loved the characters. Perfect for fans of You've Got Mail and gaming.
Seriously adorable, funny, heartfelt, and thoughtful. Each time I pick up a book by Jesse Q. Sutanto, I know the banter is going to be hilarious! The MCs have top notch chemistry and I enjoyed getting to know them. This will be a hit with teens.
While I am not a gamer myself, I’ve heard lots of stories from female friends of mine, who came about the toxicity of the gaming world, and how awful people speak to each other in the games, especially the way men speak to women. In this seemingly light hearted teen romance , the author addresses this very deep issue, and shows how situations like this, and bullying, and not allowing people to be individuals can cause people to lose their sense of self, and be really and truly unhappy. Kiki loves her online, gaming life and her best friend, who she games with, but when she begins at a new school, and is quickly bullied for speaking her mind, she begins to forget who she really is, and become afraid to show that to the world. The characters in these books are always unforgettable, fun, and relatable. I look forward to more of her books and I know that they will be a hit in my classroom with my Indonesian students.
Didn't See That Coming by Jesse Q. Sutanto was a very cute, very YA read. I can definitely see a lot of people enjoying it. It's easy to read and as a huge fan of You've Got Mail, I can totally see this being a favorite among others who also enjoyed the movie.
I love You Got Mail so I instantly knew this was for me. It was a hilarious, fast read and one I will reread. The characters were so fun, the story was funny and sweet. It is a story done many times but I liked this version a lot.
Didn’t See That Coming is an adorable young adult romance that will have you swooning through the entire book. I loved how funny Kiki was and she was a great character. The chemistry between her and Liam jumped off the pages. I can’t wait to read another book Jesse because this one was soooooo good!!!!!
