The Marvel obsession is very real in our school library—and in my own house, for that matter! After enjoying the Hawkeye series, this title caught my eye, and it didn’t disappoint. Kate Bishop is both relatable and totally not to teens. There’s a good amount of action, and even though my Marvel knowledge is mostly limited to Disney+, I found myself able to follow and truly enjoy the story. Fans of the show will certainly love it, but I think even those unfamiliar will be able to dive right in. I do wish the author had left out a couple instances of language not appropriate for middle school and found it unnecessary. Otherwise, I’m pleased and also pumped to see a female teen heroine getting some page time!
Ashely Poston was a great choice to pen a story for Kate Bishop. Poston knows how to write banter, and her writing style fits this book and the characters so well.
Whether you’re a marvel comic fan or an MCU fan, you’ll have a lot of fun with this little extension in the Hawkeye story.
This was every bit the rollicking good time I was anticipating; Kate Bishop is a terrific character all on her own, but in Ashley Poston's hands, she positively leaps off the page. The mystery she's trying to solve - alongside fellow heroine and BFF America Chavez, and Best Boy In The World Lucky the Pizza Dog, with the occasional appearance from Clint Barton - is well-crafted and delightfully twisty, laced with the menace of everyone's favorite mob boss, Kingpin. Overall, this was just a breezy, fun read that lived up to every bit of hope I had about it. Here's hoping that it's just the beginning to a series helmed by Poston!
I was a huge fan of the recent Hawkeye Disney+ series and couldn't wait to dive into this book. It's a fun, fast-paced adventure about a witty, relatable superhero (and her friends! And her dog!). Beautifully written, perfectly paced, and the perfect introduction to the character (a great jumping-in point if you're new to Kate Bishop/Hawkeye/Marvel books). Highly, highly recommend.
I got to read Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King by Ashley Poston and it’s one amazing ride from start to finish. I already really love the Kate Bishop version of Hawkeye so getting to see this amazing depiction of her was fun. On top of that we get an intriguing murder mystery involving nightmares and hypnotism surrounding a fantasy book series that leads us on a journey where we get to see a lot of other Marvel heroes such as America Chavez and Kamala Khan. Ashley really takes us into the mindset of Kate Bishop during the nightmare sequences and I was immediately needing to start the next chapter when one would end. While I did predict some things near the end, I think that’s more because of how well the clues were laid out in the book and that’s always the fun of a mystery book is getting to try to guess what’ll happen next along with the protagonist. If you like Marvel, mysteries, and street-level heroes with high-level stakes, then I recommend this book. Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King is available now.
I’m a massive MCU fan but have never read the comics, and I didn’t realize that there was such a huge difference between Kate’s backstory in the comics and the one I’m familiar with through the Hawkeye TV show. I think this is super important to know from the get-go, because I was so confused by a few of the references at first.
Speaking of the references, I loved the author’s sly references to (what I assume) must be things she loves - a boy wearing a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt, a bookshop in Brooklyn named Books are Magical, video games, and lots of superhero name drops and cameos. The action is very constant through the book, and while there are a few places where the story lulls a bit, I felt like it picked up quickly and held my attention for the most part.
I read this book and then listened to it in the car with my sons (ages 10 and 13) and they really liked it as well except for the light romance. I think it’s because they’re boys! They enjoyed the humor and said that it enhanced the story for them.
I would definitely recommend this fun story to any Marvel fan!
This was fun! I love sassy, witty Kate. The plot is fun enough, entertaining but the characters are where it shines. I love Kate and America’s friendship. And Lucky the pizza dog is here, the most important character.
Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Publishing for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Before I start I should say that I love Kate Bishop. She's been my favourite Marvel superhero for a long time. And if you want to know one of the reasons that I started doing archery... it may be because of her.
Anyway, when I saw this book available on NetGalley I had to request it!
And I am so glad I did because this was a great book. It follows Kate Bishop from the comics more closely than it does Kate Bishop from the Disney+ TV show which, as an avid Hawkeye comic fan, I appreciated. However, that does mean that anyone coming in from the TV show might be a little confused but I always prefer her comic storyline so I am biased.
Overall, it was a great book. With enough action and drama to feel like you are reading a comic book over a novel.
My only single qualm with the story was that the supernatural, malevolent force was a little difficult to get my head around. Kate isn't necessarily only fighting a physical being which makes things a little complicated. But by the end of it, I understood what we were fighting against.
Overall, it was a great book. If you're into Marvel YA novel adaptations or just into Kate Bishop and Hawkeye in general - I would definitely recommend this book. It's fun and quirky with some great characters and great action.
I would also like to make a special mention of some of the amazing pop culture references made in the book. We had references to: Percy Jackson, The Mummy, spicy alien romances, a book with a very similar plot to Howl Moving Castle and a bookshop called Books are Magical (Books Are Magic, anyone????).
I did not have a chance to read this book before its publish date, but it was purchased for my library. I'm going to be honest: I thought this was a continuation of the Hawkeye comics, so I was very surprised (and sort of disappointed) when I saw that it was a full-length YA novel. However: I think having a YA novel centered on Kate Bishop is a *great* concept, and I think this is going to be an easy sell for Marvel fans or fans of mysteries with a hint of romance!
Ahhhhhh!! I love anything that Ashley Poston puts out, and I was SO EXCITED to see that she was doing a Kate Bishop book! Her writing is so amazing, and I loved how well she slipped into Kate’s voice. This is definitely going to be one I recommend!!
I became a fan of Kate Bishop during the Hawkeye comic book run a few years ago. I'm glad she had her own YA book now. Think she deserves to get more fans. This was a fun romp around the city with a superhero.
Kate Bishop is one of my absolute favorite Marvel characters so I was really excited to get to read this one. And it was a BLAST! Kate was written so well, just as quippy and delightful as in her show. I loved seeing her friendship with America Chavez (definitely need a book with her!) and of course, the moments with Clint were fantastic. And we get more Lucky, the best dog in the whole world! The action scenes were very exciting and I really liked the whole secret hypnosis language part of the story. I also enjoyed Milo’s character and his chemistry with Kate was great. There were tons of Marvel name drops and we even get to see a few more superheroes in this story. I just had such a fun time reading this one and can’t wait for more Women of Marvel books! If you’re a Marvel fan, I definitely recommend this one!
Thank you NetGalley, Disney Publishing and Marvel Press for an advanced digital reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.
Well... who doesn't love a bit of Kate Bishop! I love how she is becoming a more prominent character within the Marvel universe and I love how this novel seemed to be well researched before being written. I also think it's fab that there were a few guest appearances. The only downfall is that it is probably aimed more a teen audience. Regardless, it is still enjoyable for adults!
I've always been a fan of Kate Bishop since her debut in Young Avengers. I felt like Poston did a great job bringing a comic book character to a literary medium. Along with sticking with how Marvel integrates multiple characters within the story line without feeling like Kate's own story is being sidetracked.
Kate is known to help out when she sees a crime in progress. After she helps a boy whose bag is taken, their bags accidentally get mixed up. His bag has a mysterious book that others would do anything to get ahold of. Her bag has her bow and arrows, see … she is the young Hawkeye. Now Kate finds herself looking for Milo to switch their bags and keep the city safe too. What other superheroes will help Kate out? What new adventures will Kate experience?
Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King is a stand-alone adventure in the Marvel Universe. Both Marvel fans and readers who randomly pick up this volume will enjoy the antics and humor throughout. I found myself stopping to share certain passages with my husband because they were too good to keep to myself. The adventure is fast-paced and the pages almost turn themselves. A great read for everyone who enjoys superheroes.
Thank you to NetGalley and Marvel Press for providing me with an early copy of this book.
I should start out by saying that I love Kate Bishop. I love her presence in the comics and I loved that we got the Hawkeye TV series. Is my opinion swayed in the positive because of this fact? Maybe. But I do stand by what I say since I was trying to be objective.
The book starts quickly and has a great pace but then it starts to wane in the middle. It’s a little slower pace but it makes sense for what’s happening in the story.
Kate’s characterization is spot-on and I loved the inclusion of America and Clint. However, I do think you need to be aware that comics!Kate and TV!Kate have different-ish backstories. I forgot about this and had to keep reminding myself that this is comics!Kate. You don’t need to read the comics since the author did a great job of filling in what we needed to know.
I wanted to love this. I love Kate Bishop so much. I love America Chavez. I think the pacing of this was just too slow. There were moments it gave me just what I wanted but there was a lot between those moments.
Hawkeye is my fav superhero, and Kate Bishop is one of my favs to take up the mantle. I will always want more about her.
I really enjoyed reading this! My fave character was Kate!
The main character, Kate bishop was charming and funny and her friendship with America is something I dearly treasure. I also really enjoyed reading the story too. I really enjoyed the layout too and it had good pacing.
As soon as this popped up as an ARC on NetGalley, I (Christy) grabbed it and flew through it! I love that we are getting more Marvel novels (shoutout to the original Black Widow novel, which was one of my very first book events!). This story is book-lover's mystery, with an engaging murder mystery that will keep you fully in the story. Kate is at her best when she is bantering with others - and we get much of that in her engagement with Clint and America! You don't need to know anything about the current Marvel universe or even Kate to enjoy this book (but I highly recommend you do because Kate is THE BEST).
