This request was a bit of a departure for me, but I'm glad I took a chance on it.

The novel is fast-paced and twisty with a healthy dose of dark humor and drama. The story kicks off with Katherine Fisher—aka Catfish—planning her divorce from her soon-to-be ex-husband, Lindsay “Dogboy” Kramer. She’s set to cash in big on their split, but just as she’s about to secure her financial future, Dogboy mysteriously vanishes. What starts as a straightforward divorce takes a sharp turn into the world of counterfeit goods, money laundering, and drug smuggling.

The book thrives on its unpredictable twists and morally gray characters. Catfish is an intriguing protagonist—calculating and self-interested, but also a mom trying to protect her daughter, Emma. As the investigation into Dogboy’s disappearance deepens, and the cops begin to connect Dogboy to criminal enterprises, Catfish finds herself in a dangerous race to secure what’s hers before the authorities or the mob get to her first.

Gracias does an excellent job of blending suspense with humor, especially in the way he portrays the complex dynamics between Catfish and Dogboy, as well as the absurdity of their larger-than-life lives. The world of counterfeit luxury goods and criminal dealings is portrayed with a keen eye for detail, and the sense of urgency builds nicely as Catfish scrambles to protect herself and her daughter.

Some of the characters do feel a bit like a caricature, especially Dogboy, who’s almost too larger-than-life to feel real. That said, the fast-moving story kept me turning the pages, eagerly trying to read faster to find out what the heck was actually going on. All in all, this one was a fun, clever read that didn't take itself too seriously. Definitely worth checking out.

Dogboy v Catfish is a procedural that is heavy on the procedure. If you like the detail of police work, then this may be the book for you.

It took me a while to fishing this book as it’s not what I usually read. I’ve had it on my shelf for a long time and finally picked it up and started reading.

The first few chapters I was interested in the story of Dogboy and Catfish… then it got a little annoying as I do not like the way the author writes. So I had to put it down for a moment.

I picked it back up and got stuck in. The back and forth at how did Dogboy disappear was interesting - did Catfish really have anything to do with it? Why isn’t she putting her bank stuff forward?

The story was really good. as it’s not something I read much it had me trying to work things out as we went along. I was a little disappointed with part of the end - the whole video thing with the two people (that’s all I’ll say) - it just didn’t really make sense. Like, why? I get that she’s embarrassed by the money, but it was just out of left field and not really something that sounds right for the Dogboy character. And the amount of money? No video of that sort would cost THAT much!

But anyway, I did enjoy it and do recommend people give it a read.

A quirky and imaginative story that presents an unusual premise: a dogboy character battling against a menacing catfish. Unfortunately, while the idea is intriguing, the execution leaves much to be desired.

The characters, particularly Dogboy, have potential, but their development feels shallow and underexplored. The story's pacing can be jarring, with abrupt shifts that make it difficult to stay engaged. The world-building also feels inconsistent, and the humor, which seems to be a big part of the narrative, often falls flat.

While the book might appeal to younger readers looking for lighthearted, adventurous tales, the lack of depth and sometimes confusing plot may leave older readers disappointed. Overall, "Dogboy v Catfish" is a fun concept that doesn't fully live up to its promise.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this.

I found the premises of this book very interesting. While there were some parts of the book I enjoyed, and the mystery kept me guessing, overall, it was lacklustre for me. I think this was more due to my feelings for Catfish, who I found to be shallow and greedy. But I did enjoy the ending.

While this book isn't for me, it is definitely for others, and I would still recommend people to read.

Guilty pleasure. This is the story that if picked up in a doctor's waiting room you want to take it with you. You have to know how it ends. Seinfeld anyone? A multi-season hit about nothing. Dogboy v Catfish is creepy; it's ridiculous, all over the place and incredibly entertaining in a smart adult way. Most books I wonder if the author will literally screw up an ending. With Dogboy v Catfish I had one small piece right, sort of. I wasn't sure until I saw it in print. Does that count as figuring it out? I loved the ending. Not once did I wonder if - I wondered how he was going to piece the pieces together.

I would have given this to my Dad with a quick you may like this, and then held myself back from calling him everyday to see if he was reading it.

Note: I am embarrassed by the length of time this has sat on my NetGalley shelf. My sincere apology to Mr. Gracias.

A couple are getting divorced and then the husband disappears. Her first ex husband also passed away under mysterious circumstances in a foreign country. What is going on and who is/are the bad guy(s) here?
Is this legal system fair to both parties in a split? Set in Australia and Thailand as a North American reader this book had an exotic appeal, who doesn’t love an international mystery??

I have to admit I procrastinated reading this book. The cover didn’t appeal to me and I thought because of the title that it was a young adult novella.

As far as novels go these days this one is a shorter one at less than 300 pages and this may be it’s saving grace as although the story is interesting enough I didn’t find it particularly gripping and there are (necessarily) long dry details about the crimes being committed.

This was just an ok mystery for me. If you have it read it but I don’t suggest you go seeking it out. I did appreciate the authors note at the end of the book which explained their personal connection to elements of the story and the point they were trying to make. I’m not sure they were successful in that goal but it did help me appreciate the story more.

I tried, and tried again but I just couldn't finish this one. I probably read more than double the number of pages this book contained with the retries but I honestly couldnt get past the first 100 pages. I can almost guarantee its a me problem but I won't be trying again as theres too many books in teh world and nowhere near enough time within which to consume them

One of the best book I have read in a long time.
Rating *****+++
It’s very apparent the work and research which has gone into making Dogboy v Catfish. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
The plot was outstanding and the characters were off the page. The extremes some people go to and lack of all morals to the other extreme, caring, loyal and honest.
Many thanks Luke Gracias.

“Dogboy v Catfish, written by Luke Gracias, was not my type of story. And I tried to like the book each time I picked up my IPad and attempted to dive in . I just couldn’t find the plot, nor the writing style, to my taste. There are a whole lot of folks that did like this story. So please go read their reviews and then enjoy the book as they have. I shall be returning to my style of books…

Dogboy and Catfish by Luke Gracias

Taking place in Melbourne, Australia, mostly in 1999, Catfish and Dogboy will have you running all over to solve the disappearance of Lindsay Kramer. This very fun romp explains the odd title early on and in even more detail by the end.

The characters are well written and the story is intriguing. I felt it got a bit bogged down with the bad guys being followed by the Aussie detectives, but that aside, it’s an endearing, puzzling chase. I can say no more without giving spoilers.

I’ll round this 4.5 star tale up to a 5 and recommend it for those who like a lighthearted, well-put together story which has a fabulous ending. Hats off to Authors Upfront for the ARC of this title.

Sometime after the death of her first husband supposedly by suicide, Katherine Fisher (Catfish), a social media influencer, marries Lindsay Karmer, a financial tech millionaire known as Dogboy because of his innate ability to attract and communicate with dogs. What follows forms the plot of this novel: Lindsay goes missing is the midst of Katherine’s plans on divorcing him precisely 18 months after their wedding so that she will be entitled to the bulk of his fortune to support herself and her young daughter. Lindsay’s disappearance throws a monkey wrench into Katherine’s plans as the police look into Lindsay’s disappearance (and the death of Kathrine’s first husband). Both Katherine and Lindsay are smart and devious, to say the least, and the reader will be entertained from learning of the tricks each has used or uses to outsmart the other. This is a very intriguing thriller that has some interesting twists and turns. Nonetheless, some of the writing seemed a bit stilted to me, part of the novel bordered on being overly repetitive, and the entire narrative was just too complex at times. All in all, though, I found this to be a very entertaining read, one that definitely kept me turning pages — even though I had predicted what would generally happen at the end.

This sounded like a good holiday book with lots twists and turns, but unfortunately and very unusually for me, I didn’t get to the end to find out many of them. I got quite bogged down in the details which felt unnecessarily complex and I found the dialogue really clunky and unnatural. I admire greatly people who self publish and I'm sorry not to be able to give a better review.
Thank you to netgalley and Luke Garcias for an advance copy of this book

Dogboy v Catfish by Luke Gracias is a psychological thriller about a missing husband.

First, let me thank NetGalley, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis:    (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Lindsay "Dogboy" Kramer is a successful businessman and dog whisperer.

Katherine "Catfish" Fisher, mother to Emma, meets him when renting a storefront to hold her fashionable boutique, selling high end clothing and accessories.  They marry, living in Melbourne Australia, but two years later, Kathy is seeing a lawyer to dissolve her marriage, stating he is cheating on her.  She wants to file precisely 18 months after the marriage, thereby ensuring her daughter will receive a healthy child support payment until she is 18. Her lawyer, Freya Keogh feels like something is off.  She knew Lindsay from university, and feels that Katherine may be a gold-digger.

When Lindsay goes missing from his hotel room in Sydney, the police start investigating.

Katherine quickly realizes that she should stop the separation proceedings, as that would make her look guilty of something.

Freya meets up with Lindsay's friend Michael, who is also a lawyer, and they start comparing notes.

The police investigation expands, and soon they are looking into a counterfeit operation, drugs  and money laundering, all involving designer goods.  Catfish is starting to look like a suspect.  But is Dogboy alive or dead?

My Opinions:
Well, I enjoyed this book much more than I had anticipated.  It moved much faster than the first two books I have read by this author.  However, he still writes really detailed scenario's, and if you aren't aware of how Import and Export Customs work, or the world of counterfeiting, you are about to find out more than you really need (or want) to know. It got a little heavy.

On a publishing note, I hated the font (which I couldn't seem to change), and then realized I hated the font in his previous two books as well.  Sorry, that's not relevant to the story.

The book covered many topics everything from suicide to murder, love to criminal activity.  But it also involved greed and revenge.

The characters were well thought out, and had some depth.  I loved Dogfish and hated Catfish (who was very shallow, very greedy, and just too self-centered), just as the author wanted.  I did not think Catfish got all she deserved, and did not feel her change near the end was believable.  I liked the determination of the police.

Overall, it was okay.   The plot was good, but I didn't feel there were any surprises or twists....so it lacked something.  Oh, and I loved the cover (and the eventual explanation).
