Wow, wow! What an important book for young kids, and adults alike! My four year old and I enjoyed reading this together, and it definitely sparked some important conversations for us.
This book is a simple way to talk about being anti-racist. It starts with a child seeing a protest, specifically the Black Lives Matter protests from the killing of George Floyd. The child asks what’s going on why are we doing this. His parents inform him and give him some examples of people who have fought for the freedoms they have today, and they also talk about why they’re still fighting. The book includes activities and things to try after reading to become not just an anti-racist superhero but to have empathy and to feel for others, and to pay attention to what is happening around the world. The story in this book is lovely. The activities elongate the story but there’s a purpose and a need this book fills quite well.
This picture book is inspiring! It starts from a boy, Malik, who observes the BLM protest after the George Floyd incident. Then, it went on to discussing what being an antiracist superhero is like, with four steps: look, listen, feel, act. The author does a great job describing and giving examples for each step, and it feels very applicable & easy to understand. It also has a great glossary at the end of the book, which I think educators should use at the beginning (before reading) to explain the big concepts and words to the students (like desegregation, antiracist, etc.)
While the book is great, I think it is quite American-centered- I wish there are examples of antiracist heroes from other parts of the world, too!
An introduction to racism and anti-racism for children. Nice art and well plotted story. We'll definitely be getting this for out Children's Room, regardless.
Thanks NetGalley for the preview!
Love how such a big topic was beautifully explained to littles! Shows many ways to work towards being anti-racist and changing the world. Beautiful illustrations as well.
This was a really great book on ways for kids to be antiracist, with many practical tips. I received an ARC from netgalley in exchange for an honest review of this book.
Jennifer Nicole Bacon writes about racism and activism that is easy for young readers to understand. The book teaches kids real ways that they can be anti-racist and help work towards equality and justice in their lives. Some examples she includes are listening to friends or saying kind words to those who are sad.
Even the illustrations are inspiring and empowering.
(Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy)
If I could give this book a million stars, I would!!! What a great book for children to learn about how to combat racism. I will definitely be buying a copy of this book for my personal library!
my kids [5 and 2] enjoyed this book! we read it 2x. as a mama, my favorite part is the activity pages in the back.
This book had the perfect amount of words on each page. It very eloquently discusses George Floyd and racism as well as other people who have dealt with racism. This would be an excellent book to be used for a conversation starter with kids.
I really loved this book. As a white teacher of predominantly white students there is often a notion that our preschoolers are too young to understand racism. This book is not only age appropriate, but solidifies that the foundation to being anti-racist are based in empathy and compassion. I loved that this book has activities at the end of it for children and adults to participate in as well.
This book has some really great information for young people who are starting to notice racial inequality around them. It would serve as a good book for a caregiver to read with a child to foster conversation.
Thank you to NetGalley and Shambhala Publications, Inc. for the digital version of an Advanced Readers Copy of I Am An Antiracist Superhero! by Jennifer Nicole Bacon. I was interested to see what this book would offer as lesson for children to be an antiracist, so I was happy to be approved to read this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
The lessons taught in this children's book were fantastic and done in a way that children can understand. The story is well written and illustrations are fantastic. This book is perfect for teachers to actually teach the lesson in preschool, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. It even includes activities that can be done in the classroom or even as a homework assignment with parents. The lessons taught in this book could even help in situations of bullying.
Five out of five stars is what I give I Am An Antiracist Superhero! by Jennifer Nicole Bacon. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I am looking forward to reading other books by this author.
