I enjoyed this but it was a little too advanced for my recently-turned seven year old. After just one chapter she was over it so I continued myself. I’m sure she’d enjoy it in a few years and now I know it’ll be a good one for her.
Ooh, I am excited that this is the first book in a new series! I can't wait to see what Daisy and the 5 o'clock club will get up to in the next story. This book will be a great read for fans of Holly Black, JK Rowling, Kelly Armstrong, and B.B. Alston.
Sophia Nomvete did a great job narrating this middle grade novel. I hope that Sophia is the narrator for the rest of the series.
This was such a fun middle grade fantasy. I love all things related to The Secret Garden so this was a sure fire win for me. I thought the magic system was creative and fun. The cliff hanger at the end was pure perfection.
Special thanks to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for an early release of this audio book.
The narration was very good. This is a middle grade fantasy about an eco-world.
There is a mystery to be solved.
I found the book okay, it was enjoyable, but not enough world building or dialogue. It left me wanting to know more. I was probably not a good audience for this book as I don't enjoy reading books with political or other messages, especially when the books are geared toward kids.
It was released June 6, 2023
My favorite thing about this book is the narration. The narrator is versatile and clearly very skilled at their craft. If it wasn’t for them, I would likely have DNF’ed this audiobook 1/4 way through. That being said, this is one of those audiobooks that if you stray for even just a few minutes, it is very easy to get lost entirely and have no idea where the characters are or what’s actually going on.
If you’re able to follow along without distraction, this is a great middle grade book for lovers of fantasy and magic.
(I received this audiobook ALC via NetGalley in return for an honest review. Thank you.)
My sister and I loved this book! It was the perfect book to read together that actively kept her and I intrigued through the story. You'll love the dynamics and the fun between the characters, the magic that is described throughout, and the powerful/satisfying way it all comes together in the end. Book two is definitely on my list to keep an eye out for!
Eve try thing from the uniqueness of this fantasy adventure story to its narrator was a total delight, and I must now have a hardcover edition and cannot wait for the next book! Thank you, NetGalley for my gifted audiobook.
This was a great story! I know it said it was for children, but I truly enjoyed it. Daisy and her friends were a delight to read about and I had fun trying to figure out who was behind all of the terrible things happening. Greenwild by Pari Thomson is a definite read for those looking for a good, clean, fun story. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher. I quite enjoyed it! and the narrator did great too!
Ahhhh this was so good. I wasn’t expecting this to be magical - I went into the story fairly blind. This is very much mystery novel with plant magic - and a little portal magic - Amazing! The main character is a single child with a mother who is a famous journalist who travels the world reporting on stories. This particular story might be more dangerous than normal so she puts her daughter in a boarding school. Im thinking you can guess what happens? Then everything starts and the story turned into a fantastical stream of events. I cannot wait for book two - Hopefully it’ll be out soon.
I am absolutely in love with a story that brings magic and beauty into children’s literature. The Greenwild by Pari Thomson does just this. The audio production performed by Sophia Nomvete was stunning. Every character had their own voice and they came to life in this tale that is really suited for adults as well as children ages 9+.
Since the death of her father, Daisy Thistledown has lived the journalist lifestyle with her very acclaimed mother. Moving constantly to chase stories, Daisy hasn’t had the chance to really make friends or feel at home. Things change when Ma follows a story into the Amazon and sends Daisy to a boarding school while she is gone. From here the story transitions as her mother goes missing and Daisy hunts for answers that take her into the magical world of the Greenwild.
I received a copy of "Greenwild" in exchange for my honest and thoughtful review.
In "Greenwild," an exciting middle-grade portal fantasy, readers will find themselves instantly captivated by the book's vibrant and imaginative world-building. It holds a fun and engaging narrative that effortlessly bridges the gap between young and seasoned readers. The audiobook, narrated by Sophia Nomvete, provides a particularly noteworthy experience. Nomvete delivers a clear and engaging narration that breathes life into the text, making the story leap off the pages with her melodic voice. Her performance is so compelling that it will undoubtedly leave listeners eager to explore more books from her impressive repertoire in the future. "Greenwild" is more than a book; it's a thrilling adventure and an auditory feast that leaves its audience longing for more.
Gorgeous world building. The story itself is extremely obvious and has been told before many times... Think Harry Potter if everything was Herbology and Neville was Harry's dad... But the characters and the world are lovely and diverse. This is probably more like a 3 or 3.5 star rating for me, but I've rounded it up because I suspect that this middle grade read would hit it's target audience much more clearly than it did me.
The audio narrator was excellent
Wow, this book was so good! Fans of Harry Potter, Wilderlore, and Land of Stories will love this magical book that has elements of each one. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. It has parts of nature, botany in particular, magic, friendship, discovery, mystery, and lots of twists and turns to keep it interesting. We cannot wait for the next book, but it’s going to be so hard waiting 11 more months for it. My kids loved it so much they asked me to purchase it on Audible so they could listen to it again.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book.
One of the best portal fantasies I've read in quite awhile! Daisy Thistledown and her journalist mother have traveled the world chasing her mother's stories ever since the death of her dad when she was very little. It's been a fascinating, adventurous life, but Daisy has missed having friends and feeling rooted to a place that feels like "home." And then her mother chases a story too dangerous for Daisy to join her, leaving Daisy at a dreadful boarding school (this part felt a bit slow to me). When Daisy discovers that her mother has gone missing, she realizes she must set out to find her on her own. Her only clue is to follow her mother's last directions. These lead Daisy to a world she never knew existed, new friends, and the chance to get to know who she really is apart from her mother.
I loved the adventure, the mystery, and the fascinating magical world, but the friendships were really what I loved the most. This book brought laughter and tears, and those are the best kinds.
The audiobook narrator was terrific - although one of the characters was described as American, but then had a British accent like everyone else.
The buzz that surrounds this book is incredible. I couldn't wait to devour this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I know my plant loving students will especially love this book. The world the author has created is so inviting and I wish it existed. One of my top reads of the year.
This is a super fun, adventurous, heartwarming middle grade story with green magic! I'm always drawn to middle grade fantasy as I feel it is often very creative and original, and this book is a great example of that. I look forward to future books in this series!

Greenwild by Pari Thomson was a complete surprise. I read middle grade because I have three middle grade readers, and I'm always looking for new books for them to read. They're big fans of fantasy, so when the publisher offered to send me a finished copy of Greenwild (plus an advance listening copy), I happily accepted!
Daisy Thistledown and her mother travel around the world, chasing news stories. But her mother's latest assignment is too dangerous for Daisy to come along, so she ends up temporarily enrolled at a school for young girls. But then her mother goes missing and suddenly Daisy is running for her life. She doesn't know why she's suddenly so important, but people--bad people--are determined to find her. With the help of her new feline friend, she finds a hidden doorway that leads her into a different world, the Greenwild. The Greenwild is a place full of natural beauty and magic beyond anything Daisy had ever dreamed of. She learns that her mother is more than a journalist--she's a botanist from the Greenwild, someone with magical powers, determined to protect nature in both worlds.
Together with a group of magical young friends, Daisy must attempt to uncover the truth and save the Greenwild from the ones who want to destroy it, and also hopefully save her mother and the other botonists who have disappeared.
Greenwild is a fresh, fun fantasy in the vein of Amari and the Night Brothers or Harry Potter. A magical school? Check. A group of friends who form a strong bond? Check. A big, daunting quest? Check. It's the first in a new series, and it's a fantastic start. I can't wait to see where the series goes from here.
This was a really fun middle grade book. It gave me Secret Garden vibes but with magic and separate timelines.
After Daisy's mom goes on a dangerous voyage and does not come back, Daisy finds herself running and ends up in the Greenwild, a place where people have plant magic. She meets Hal in a secret garden. She finds out that botanists (the people that have magic in the Greenwild) are going missing all over the world. Some of the trusted people in the Greenwild may not really be trusted people.
Daisy finds a really fun group of friends in the Greenwild. She goes to school to try to bring her magic forward, as people who do not have the magic cannot go between worlds. The classes they do are really fun and imaginative. Daisy's nights with Hal in their garden were some of my favorite parts just because a secret garden is so magical and we learn some really plot twist-y things about Hal especially at the end.
The narrator was wonderful. Sometimes when narrators have accents, it's hard to follow, but I was able to understand and listen well to this one.
This is THE kids book right now. I love this one and cannot wait to recommend it to parents that come into my store. I loved everything about this. It’s strange to put a kids book at the top of my reading list this year, but this one is so well written — it takes the cake. I cannot wait for more in the series.
