How much do we love surprise house guest?!
3-stars for this one!
Iris and Gabriel came home from vacation to find their good old friend Laure waiting for them. Not a stranger to be a house guest but surprise non the least and with her was a steaming secret of , say what? a love child!
B.A.Paris books are usually a hit or miss for me. I still enjoy reading her style that I can not completely scratch her name off my favorite author list. With that being said, The Guest is one that I would rate as just okay. It was slow at almost the first half. Premise was good and as always well written. The twist towards the end does not give me the whiplash effect but still considered star worthy.
I thank St.Martin’s Press via Netgalley for the advance e-copy and MacMillan Audio for the audio file to review. Emily Joyce did great on narration and I can simply say I am researching other books narrated by her.
I enjoyed this one better than her last, but it still was a little bit of a struggle for me to get interested in the story. It started to pick up at about 25% and became more interesting. The pacing was still a little slower than what I prefer.
Married couple Iris and Gabriel are hosting guest, Laure, who is having marriage troubles with her husband Pierre. He revealed a major secret to Laure and she is grabbling with the information. There is also another family who lives nearby who also has a more suspicious guest.
At times the story revolves a lot around their day to day life and circles back quite frequently to the same things. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the plot and the ending was satisfying. If you enjoy domestic drama and a slower paced plot you will enjoy this one!
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
B. A. Paris has delivered another fast-paced, entertaining read. A house guest overstays her welcome and shakes up a family. Every character has a terrible secret and it all comes to a deliciously wicked head. A killer twist caps things off for a terrific ending.
I absolutely loved this book!! Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review it. This book kept me absolutely engrossed from start to finish. I couldn’t read fast enough to see what happened next. The end was awesome!! This is my first 5 ⭐️of 2024!!👏🏼 I’m putting this one top of my list to recommend to my book loving friends. I just reviewed The Guest by B.A. Paris. #NetGalley
I have been an avid B.A. Paris reader since her debut novel, Behind Closed Doors. Her latest novel, The Guest, did not disappoint!
When Iris and Gabriel’s long time friend, Laure, shows up at their England home after leaving her husband in Paris, questions begin to arise as to her husband’s whereabouts.
I enjoyed being brought into the lives of the three main characters and the subsidiary characters along the way. Although I was expecting a fast-paced thriller, this is more a domestic drama. Do not let that keep you from reading! The huge twist at the end is SO worth the wait!
Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press, for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed above are my own.
I would first like to thank B.A. Paris, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of The Guest in exchange for my honest review.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I began reading this story, but once I started, I did not want to put it down. I was reading while cooking, cleaning, folding laundry, feeding my son, etc. I just had to know what happened, I was hooked.
The Guest by B.A. Paris follows Iris and her husband Gabriel, returning to find their long time friend Laure staying in their home. What follows is a story of betrayal, secrets, and murder that will have you gripped until the very end. The ending will make you question everything you thought you knew throughout the story.
This is a must read for fans of domestic thrillers.
Loved this book! It’s a bit of a slow burn to get to the thriller part but I loved the character development and I found the story to be captivating the whole time. I think it would make a perfect pick for a book club!
What can I say about The Guest? I’’ve read every book by BA Paris and this newest book did not disappoint. Two couples, one from Britain and one from France are the closest of friends, but best friends can hide terrible secrets that lead to three deaths. When a new couple and a gardner with a past enter the mix things take a turn for the worse,,II could not see the final twist and revelations, This was a great read that I finished on one rainy night!
Seems like a simple title right? This story is anything but simple, and that guest? I wouldn’t want her staying at my place.
There are many moving parts in this story, and it all begins with a couple named Iris and Gabriel and a dead 18 year old boy named Charlie. Gabriel happens to be first on scene at the site of Charlie’s accident, and is having trouble coping with things afterwards.
Next we have Laure, long time friend of Iris and Gabriel showing up to stay for a bit while she deals with a confession from her husband Pierre that jeopardizes their marriage.
Laure is annoying, overstepping boundaries left and right and it’s time for her to leave. Enough is enough…until she disappears. Iris and Gabriel have no idea where she is gone and can’t reach her husband either.
As I’m reading, I’m thinking what next?
Oh shall I mention we have new neighbours that become fast friends, that have a “guest” of their own?
For the first few chapters I found this one a bit confusing, trying to keep all the moving parts in place, but once they clicked, they clicked. I couldn’t put it down.
And that Epilogue, that was the icing on the cake! Highly recommend this latest one from B.A. Paris and look forward to see what she does next.
Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martins Press for the advanced copy.
The Guest starts chronicles a chain of events that happen when a family friend comes to stay. The reader gets to know two couples and the tragedies that began to unfold as the story goes on. Who is to blame? What is really happening? And who are the new neighbors down the road? The writing was brilliant, the characters interesting, and the plot unique. Great book.
B.A Paris is one of my favorite authors!! This didn't disappoint. I have been in a reading slump and I pushed through and this brought me out. It was a slow burn and just when you think you've figured it out nope not it. The ending was worth the slow burn!! Thanks netgalley for the opportunity to read in exchange for a review!!
✨This was a fast-paced read that was so easy to get lost in. It kept me on my toes and on the edge of my seat throughout.
✨I absolutely did not see the twist coming. I thought it was going one direction, and boy, was I wrong. The misdirection here is thrilling.
✨The epilogue! Wow! Mind=blown! What an ending.
✨The narration by Emily Joyce was very well done. She’s a narrator I’ve not listened to before but definitely enjoyed.
Such an entertaining domestic thriller which @baparisauthor does so well.
My thanks to @netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book before its publication date.
Delicious domestic psychological thriller! I listened to the audiobook on 2.0x which I found a perfect pace. Engaged from the beginning, I enjoyed every step of the journey, and was disappointed when the book ended. I did not anticipate the twists- and although I did not see them coming, they were believable. I give 5 stars to the books that I really enjoyed and would reread one day, and this book definitely met that criteria!
B.A. Paris is so HIT or miss for me. I seriously either love it or hate it and this one just fell flat sadly! Sorry to kill the vibe on pub day.
This biggest problem with this book was the pacing. We got so stuck in the circle of this boring couples everyday life and kept repeating how horrible their houseguest was that it just felt like "OKAY ENOUGH. Kick her out and move on! Do something exciting!"
It was a decently exciting mystery, and the only reason I held on until the end, but it just became a bit mundane at times, which was a different writing style than Paris normally offers. I also think this premise is beginning to become extremely overdone.
My final thoughts are, skip this one! Sadly unless you are a huge fan, I think you have better options out there. Save your cashhhh money guys!

This book is dumb. The plot is dumb, the two-dimensional characters are dumb and the resolution is lazy (and dumb). The utter stupidity of every character in the book can only lead the reader to one conclusion: someone is lying or the narrators are incredibly intellectually disadvantaged. Unreliable narrators can be fun, especially when they are deluding themselves and the reader, but this was just....dumb. I'm giving it two stars because it did hold my interest enough to finish and I also wanted to see if my obvious theories were correct. I don't think I'll be reading any additional "thrillers" by this author.
Honestly, I had a very hard time getting into this book and I assure you I tried multiple times to pick it up.
I feel like I didn't really connect with the characters, the pace was overall slow and overall it was not my cup of tea. I had high hopes for this book. But unfortunately DNF.
Thank you NetGalley and St.Martin's Press for the an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This author’s book are always 3.5-3.75, pretty-good-but-forgettable domestic-intrigue books. More of the same here.
A couple with an unexpected house guest, new friends, a dead body… it somehow all weaves together… secrets, lies, disappearances, deaths, etc. The kind of thing that gets wrapped up in a neat and tidy first-person 25-minute epilogue.
Got an advance copy from NetGalley, and you know how I love not waiting. It’s pretty-good-but-forgettable.
Mind Blown!
I was not expecting that twist at all! Another B.A. Paris surprise. Great work!!
This book, with a drama filled storyline was centered around couples Iris and Gabriel, Laure and Pierre and Esme and Hugh. It also included gardener Joseph and daughter Beth. Laure comes to visit Iris and Gabriel after finding hidden betrayal from her Pierre. The drama unfolds throughout the whole story with unexpected death and betrayals all over the place.
It then ends with a shocking and unexpected twist in the epilogue.
I thoroughly enjoyed this whole book and will definitely recommend it to my fellow readers.
Thank you, NetGalley, St Martin's Press, and the author for an advanced copy of The Guest. Expected publication February 20, 2024.
I always enjoy BA Paris books, so I was very excited to be approved to read an advanced copy of The Guest. This book did not disappoint me. The story was told in true BA Paris fashion, and I loved every minute, twist, and turn! Gabriel and Iris return from holiday to find their long-time friend, Laure, to have basically moved into their home. Laure is seeking advice and help with some marital troubles that have arisen after discivering her husband has fathered a child with someone else. Before long, she has overstayed her welcome and becomes a nuisance to the couple, who appear to be having their own problems. What secrets are everyone hiding from each other?? Read The Guest to find out! Thank you again to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for this advanced copy.
*Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing this book, with my honest review below*
B.A. Paris is an author whose work I generally enjoy so I was expecting this to be a great read, and I wasn’t disappointed. I was concerned at first that the number of characters would be a little chaotic to keep up with but this was written and plotted perfectly, with each character, minor and major, adding an element of tension and pulling me deeper into the mystery.
Iris was fascinating, and I was hooked on the mystery of Joseph, the gardener, and concerned for Gabriel, her husband. Esme and Hugh, the couples’ new friends had me constantly questioning if they were truly friends or actual foes. And from the jump I thought Laure would be the protagonist in this novel.
Was I right or wrong? That’s for the reader to find out, but I can assure all that this is worth diving into and the twists that are expected from B.A. Paris deliver. I can’t wait for the next novel and was left extremely satisfied, as you will be too!
Thank you again for the ARC, St. Martin’s Press and B.A. Paris. It is much appreciated and I enjoyed the read and the opportunity to share my feedback.
