Never saw the end coming. Couldn't put this book down. Loved everything about it, the plot, the characters, the twist.
Ok love B.A. Paris her books are slow burn type of reads however she draws you in with the story and the characters. I really enjoyed this one I definitely a page turner. Liked the different POV I liked the complexity of the characters each of them had their own secrets they were hiding especially Iris like she stated no one knows the real Iris. Through out the book I thought Laure was the sociopath. Loved it
B.A. Paris writes domestic thrillers like no one’s business. I didn’t see this ending coming, and I appreciate that. This was engaging, I couldn’t put it down- however the first half had me saying “JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER.” But then I figured out why that’s not possible. 4/5 stars for me- the ending epilogue was great but the “ending” was sort of just there. Loved all the twists.
Thank you NetGalley for an arc in exchange for a review!
The Guest focuses on the relationships of three couples. One could debate who is the actual guest in the title. Of course, all the couples bring with them their secrets and baggage. While the atmosphere is a bit claustrophobic in the UK location, the intermittent travel to Paris gives the reader a break from the familiar surroundings.
I had high expectations for this novel as I still think about Behind Closed Doors by this author. While The Guest was not quite as memorable, I did enjoy the story. It was definitely more of a slow burn, but I find her writing style engaging, and I was eager to figure out the mystery.
Possible spoiler—I don’t love novels where a twist is revealed because an unreliable narrator was withholding important details which are divulged at the end. Having said that, the twist was plausible, and I was invested enough in the characters that I enjoyed the novel overall.
B.A. Paris’ best novel yet! I could not put this one down. It kept me on my toes the entire time. I 100% did NOT see that ending coming and Paris kept me guessing UNTIL THE EPILOGUE.
Once you read the ending and you replay the different scenes in your mind and you start connecting the dots…. just insane. I never would have guessed.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend. If you are a fan of mystery/thrillers and Freida McFadden!
I was very excited to read this book because I loved Behind Closed Doors. I was expecting a fast paced book, but this one took me awhile to get into. I struggled at the beginning as all the characters were introduced so quickly. I didn’t feel a strong connection to any of the characters. Closer to the halfway point, I became more engaged with the story. I was not expecting the twists late in the book and they helped wrap up the book nicely. Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC.
A gripping psychological thriller . This one will hold your interest from the start to the finish. It was a wild ride that I didnt want to end. This was my first read from Paris and it did not disappoint. I received this book as an arc in exchange for my honest review. I cant wait to read another book from Paris.
The pace of this book was slow for 3/4 for the book and then the final 1/4 flew by. The smaller chapters were awesome. However the story line was a little far fetched for this day and age. Nobody would get away with it today.
The whole time I was reading this book, I was interested and trying to figure it out. I had part of it figured out, but it definitely twisted in a way that I didn't predict at the end and for that, it bumped this read up to four stars for me. While reading, I felt like the story was a bit all over the place-- until I got to the end and understood the twist. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an eARC of this novel- I would add it to your TBR!
I've read BA Paris books in past, but this book did not do it for me. Very slow beginning, and I really did not like the characters names. The ending was good, but it was a very slow paced book for me
When a myriad of guests have an everlasting effect on the lives of married couple Iris & Gabriel, a deeper mystery is left unsolved.
The pacing of this started off very slowly and the never-ending chapters of the complaining and piteous Laure, consistently overstaying her welcome, got a little exhausting to me. As usual, there's always some elements to Paris's stories that are just a little too sensational to be believed. A long term guest showing up on my doorstep unannounced and forcing herself into my household for over a month with no leave date in sight? Not gonna happen. Maybe this is just a very American thing of me to say but the numerous guests in the story who were just provided with pretty much everything they could need was a bit much to me. If only there had been more steam to the story prior to the explosive reveal at the end! Honestly, the reveal made up for everything (albeit being equally unbelievable), and I would suggest everyone read this book just for the epilogue alone.
Unlike the other review's, that I read, I thought the book started out really good with a disappointed ending.
Thanks to NetGalley for advance copy 3.5 stars
I love BA Paris’ masterpiece “behind closed doors”. The other books since have fell very flat, including this one. This is just your typical murder thriller. Started out very slow, got semi good about 85% in, and the ending fell flat. Typical trick authors use: the narrator/ main character is also the murderer!!!!! But didn’t tell us until the very end. They did it!!! I feel like this book will do well, but not my favorite at all. It was highly readable. Which I did enjoy.
I am a fan of B. A. Paris and this book did not disappoint. I removed one star from my rating only because the book did seem to drag on and then rush the ending; however, I did not guess the ending at all. I questioned every character at one point or another throughout the book and thought they were all well developed.
The story follows married couple Iris and Gabriel, who come home from vacation to find their friend Laure (one of the worst house guests ever) staying at their home. Laure learned that her husband, Pierre, was hiding a big secret from her and needed some time away to think about their marriage.
Gabriel is taking time off of work due to finding a teenage boy during his last few minutes alive. Despite being a doctor, Gabriel was unable to save the boy and struggles to understand the last few words that were spoken to him in those moments.
Iris soon meets (new to the village) Hugh and Esme and their friend Joseph, who they have hired to work in their garden. We soon learn that Joseph struggles with sobriety and is hiding a dark past.
This book, filled with murder and secrets, will keep you guessing and wanting to know how it’s going to end.
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC!
3.5/5. After a slow start and inconsistent pacing, the latter half picked up the suspense and led to a better than anticipated ending.
I really enjoyed this very twisty thriller. I've read quite a few B.A. Paris books and am always so impressed with how she builds suspense and keeps me so engaged.
Iris and her husband Gabriel return from a vacation to find their friend Laure staying at this house, having just had a major upset in her relationship and not wanting to be around her husband.
I felt pretty suspicious of every single character in this book, but I did find myself also liking them - especially Iris and Esme. I also loved the descriptions of the town they live in, and the garden Gabriel is working on, and Esme's house. All so vivid and I could picture them perfectly.
The short chapters made the book move so quickly and I couldn't put it down! Some parts of it felt unbelievable, which often bugs me in a thriller, but in this one I was so intrigued by it that it really didn't. Some things I guessed but a lot of them I didn't - overall left me surprised and satisfied.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a twisty, fast-paced thriller! B.A. Paris has become an auto-read for me and I look forward to reading her future work!
Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book!
I usually adore BA Paris, but this novel fell flat for me. The characters were not very engaging and I found myself unsurprised bu the actions of these very selfish men.
A wild and riveting ride with so many sharp turns and loops that turned the story upside down. Excellent characters and brilliant writing as always from Paris. But the best part of all was getting toward the end and then questioning everything you just read and thought you knew.
Wow! What can I say? This book keeps you on your toes right when you think you know everything you know nothing. Iris is the perfect wife friend and mother. She helps her neighbor in need while her husband deals with losing more people in a month then should be possible. He fights to keep his feelings inside and protect his family while Iris does all she can to help a unexpected guest that she soon fines out she is not who she thought she was. As they all agree to love and move on the last pages have you questioning the home book and what you thought of everyone. Great read entertaining so glad I got a rover for advance copy. Love the writer and style of mystery the books keep.
I was very excited to get an advanced copy of B.A. Paris new book, The Guest. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity. Like always, I only give my honest opinion so here we go...
The Guest starts out with a big explosion during a champagne toast after Hamish's christening... Then the reader to thrown back 6 month in time and we begin to learn more about who these characters are. Gabriel and Laure are a married couple with a 20 year old daughter, Beth who is taking a gap year in Greece. Paris does a wonderful job "introducing" these two main character. Often writing in Laure and Gabriels point of view, which at times felt redundant and over done.
Why 3 stars? Although the ending didn't surprise me, it's more the lack of "mystery" that lead me to give The Guest 3 stars. It's not till the last chapter that you get this rushed monolog by the killer of what they did. It felt like a last minute addition and not planned out. I personally enjoyed reading The Guest, I would read other books by B.A. Paris in the future.
