Being constantly on the go and busy, busy, busy is like a badge of honor and, when we have a spare moment, it’s now routine to post online to prove how dynamic we are. Everything has become a competition.

We should not view rest as a luxury or reward after hard work but as essential for sustaining our health.

The book focuses on offering readers simple activities that can assist them in achieving complete rest, supported by scientific research and personal experiences. It presents a fresh perspective on the eight fundamental habits for rest, providing a variety of activities that can help individuals integrate these habits into their daily lives.

- Making sleep a priority and ensuring that you obtain sufficient high-quality sleep each night.

- Incorporating deep breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques to foster relaxation and decrease stress levels.

- Taking regular breaks from electronic devices and minimizing screen time to give your mind a pause and reduce mental stimulation.

- Devoting time to nature, whether by strolling through a park or merely sitting in a garden, promotes a sense of calmness and well-being.

- Engaging in regular physical activity to release tension, enhance mood, and improve the quality of sleep.

- Practicing mindful eating by attentively experiencing the sensations and flavors of your food can aid in relaxation and prevent overeating.

- Incorporating stress management techniques such as meditation, journaling, or pursuing hobbies that allow you to unwind and handle stress effectively.

- Prioritizing self-care activities that bring joy and enable you to recharge, such as taking a bath, reading a book, or participating in hobbies.

Rather than attempting to adopt all eight habits simultaneously, begin with a single habit and focus on integrating it into your routine consistently. Once you feel comfortable with that habit, move on to the next one.

Establish specific goals for each habit. For instance, if you are working on prioritizing sleep, set a goal to consistently go to bed at a certain time each night and aim for a specific number of hours of sleep.

Utilize reminders or alarms on your phone or other devices to prompt you to engage in the rest habits. This can help you maintain consistency and prioritize these habits in your daily life.

Share your goals and progress with a friend, family member, or support group. Having someone to hold you accountable can enhance your motivation and help you stay on track.

Find ways to make the rest habits enjoyable and something you eagerly anticipate. For example, if you are incorporating nature connection, opt for a picturesque park or trail to visit or bring a book to read outdoors.

Understand that there may be days when it proves challenging to incorporate all of the habits. Be flexible and forgiving with yourself, and remember that progress is more important than perfection.

Keep a journal or use a habit-tracking app to monitor your progress. Visualizing your progress can provide you with motivation and help you stay dedicated to your habits.

If you're finding it difficult to incorporate the habits into your routine, consider seeking support from a therapist, coach, or support group. They can provide guidance and help you overcome any obstacles you may encounter.

It's worth mentioning that cultivating new habits requires time and effort, but the rewards of achieving complete rest can profoundly impact your overall health and well-being. Don't be too hard on yourself and make sure to celebrate even the smallest victories along the journey. By staying committed and dedicated, you can seamlessly integrate the restful practices from "Calmism" into your daily routine and reap the benefits of deep relaxation.

"Calmism" serves as an invaluable guide for individuals seeking tranquility and inner peace.

I needed this book. I'm at a point in my life where I do not know how to do nothing and just...rest and rejuvenate. I found this book to be an easily accessible guide that leads the reader through different areas of their life. Definitely insightful and easy to pick up and read the part you need.

I really appreciated all the advice in this book, and that so much of it had been tested on a variety of people. I also loved the transparency when they were suggesting something that they had not had as part of a test group. The book was slightly too calm for me, it didn't really engage me as much as I wanted it to, but the information isn't any less valuable for that.

I enjoyed reading Calmism. I get sent a lot of MBS and self-help books, but this one stood out to me as coming from a sound clinical background. I personally found it very useful because I live with a chronic illness, so I will certainly be combining some of the practices mentioned here to help me combat the symptoms of that. It made a lot of sense to me, and while there is nothing groundbreaking, there were things I had not heard of before, such as sound baths. All in all a useful book that I am sure will help a lot of people when it is released.

calmism covers rest habits in 8 different realms: mental, emotional, physical, nutritional, sensory, creative, social, and spiritual. The information is offered in a gentle tone that may be helpful for those new to the practices of creating calm and fostering well-being.

Unfortunately, this book did not resonate with me at all. I thought it was super basic and read like a term paper. If you have done any reading on the topic, you won't find anything new here, and I think a short, bullet-pointed article would have sufficed.

Thank you to Ad Lib Publishers via NetGalley for gifting me with an ARC to review!

This is without doubt the most helpful and well written self-help book I have read. I loved the way it was written in a gentle, guiding manner. The author acknowledges how difficult it can be to find time and ways to improve our ability to attain true rest. Here the author takes us through eight habits, or forms of rest, to introduce into our lives. Within each there are various ways suggested on how to achieve this. Ample evidence is provided by research of the benefits of various techniques. What I particularly liked was also acknowledgement of why certain techniques might not be of benefit for all people. This book avoids dictating to the reader exactly what to do to achieve ‘rest’ but gives you so many options that you are bound to find something that helps you. A panel of volunteers was also used to try out various approaches and tips are given of how the panel found different ways to incorporate variations into their daily lives. For me this book is a ‘must buy’! I will be buying copies as gifts as I feel everyone can find something helpful to their situation in here.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me access to an advance digital copy to review. I loved it!

As someone who has suffered from insomnia since childhood, I was excited to read this book. The book was broken down into different sections, with nice examples and practical advice to guide you. I can't wait to put some of these into practice!

Hence this book being unedited I managed to pick up some valuable points on Calmism. It is an interesting concept and author shares a strong message that we must slow down.
I do hope to have another opportunity to re-read this book as most chapters were very hard to understand due to lots of words being typed together without any spaces that created a spaghetti junction.

I really liked this book. I believe that these tools will help me to better manage my insomnia. I loved how Alexis broke the information down and provided examples. Highly recommend.

I was immediately taken with this book because it opened with a Jane Austen quote: "Life seems but a quick succession of busy nothings”
(Mansfield Park)

Some of the info I was familiar with because I've seen an Ayurvedic Health Practitioner and have taught Restorative Yoga. I really appreciated the sections on Cultivating Resilience and Thinking Positively. 6months ago we lost our home of 22 years to a house fire. Resiliency and Positivity are definitely needed.

Especially liked the 'Menu' at the end of book. You can pick things from each of the 8 steps to try.

I like the design and the format of the book, which is separated into eight sections: mental rest, emotional rest, physical rest, nutritional rest, sensory rest, creative rest, and social rest. The author covers subjects like mindfulness, sleep, time in nature, healthy eating, and stress, with a mix of scientific background and practical guidance. It’s written in an informal style, and at the end of each chapter there is a section where a small panel provides feedback on some of the techniques they have tried (which, I must say, I found the least engaging part of the book).
It's a good introduction to self care, and although there’s not a lot of original ideas, here are all the things you can try in one place, in an easy to follow format.
