Our Divine Mischief is a sweet story about a young adult named Aila who has her heart intent on being sent to meet up with Yselt, a goddess who will determine what her blessing in life will be.
On the verge of being nearly too old to qualify she is finally given permission to make the trip to the island. Upon arriving she quickly realizes Yself is not any where to be seen, disappointed Aila returns home but not empty handed.
Back on land the leaders decide to give her the option of becoming outcasted or she can endure a different set of trials for one last chance of meeting Yselt. Naturally she chooses the later option.
With help from unexpected people Aila uncovers hidden villains and endures her trials.
In this story we are given three points of views, special bond with animals, Scottish vibes, and gaelic lore / mythology .
My favorite characters are Orail and Hew. The conversation Hew has with Lyr is probably my favorite part of the story, it was touching, so many of us needed to hear that.
Readers are in for a treat with Orail, it was not hard to fall in love with her.
The mischief in this book was so cute and funny.
I highly recommend reading Our Divine Mischief if you are a fan of Adriene Young's story telling.
Make sure you follow the website/ Qr code at the end of the book because the author has added some extras such as a quiz, music, ect.
I hope the author has plans for another story, I would love to read it !
Our Divine Mischief by Hanna Howard is an epic fantasy novel that draws inspiration from Scottish history and mythology. The story follows Áila LacInis, who sets out on the Goddess Trial to prove her worth and mark her coming of age. However, her expectations are shattered when she arrives on the island of the goddess Yslet to find the deity absent, leaving her future uncertain.
Hew, an outcast in the village, is assigned to assist Áila in a series of Ordeals designed to compensate for her failed Trial. As they navigate these challenges together, Hew finds hope for a better life and Áila's perception of her world is transformed.
Orail, a mysterious presence, accompanies Áila and gradually begins to uncover her own identity and powers. The story unfolds through the perspectives of these three characters, offering a multi-layered narrative.
While reading the book, I encountered some formatting issues that may have been specific to my device. Additionally, there were plot holes that were difficult to ignore, leaving some aspects of the story feeling underdeveloped. The impending war subplot, for instance, lacked clarity in terms of its origins, participants, and motivations.
However, the novel does offer several strengths. The concept of the trial ordeals provides an interesting twist, keeping the reader engaged as Áila and Hew face various challenges. The inclusion of a magical dog adds an intriguing element to the story and creates a bond between humans and animals.
The incorporation of Scottish folklore and language adds depth and authenticity to the setting, immersing readers in a rich cultural backdrop. The character development is well-executed, allowing readers to connect with the protagonists on an emotional level. The world-building is also commendable, transporting readers to a vividly imagined realm.
The pacing of the story is slow, which may not be to everyone's taste. However, the book compensates for this with well-crafted twists that keep the narrative engaging and filled with surprises. Overall, there is a light-hearted and hopeful atmosphere that permeates the book, offering a sense of optimism amidst the challenges the characters face.
In conclusion, Our Divine Mischief presents an epic fantasy tale inspired by Scottish history and mythology. While encountering some formatting issues and plot holes, the novel showcases creative trial ordeals, a fascinating magical dog, and an exploration of the bond between humans and animals. With solid character development and immersive world-building, the story offers a light-hearted and hopeful experience. Despite its slow pace, the book delivers twists and turns that maintain reader engagement.
4.2 rounded down to 4/5
This book was truly a captivating tale of finding one's place. I loved the 3 perspectives from which we got to view the story, and felt that each character added to the narrative in a unique and meaningful way. The Scottish roots in this book were refreshing and something I have not seen before in other texts. While there are some romance components, I appreciated that they did not dominate the storyline, allowing for the main plotline to shine.
For lovers of folklore, this book is for you. There are Gods and Goddesses, Trials, a very kindhearted young man, a determined young woman, political intrigue, loving family members, and the best part of anything: a loyal, lovely doggo.
I was intrigued and enchanted, as my own special puppos laid on my shoulder as I read (and I too am convinced they are magik and nothing will change my mind). I adore folklore from all over the world. The story is truly about love on all its forms and its power. Thank you for letting me read this.

Our Divine Mischief by Hannah Howard - 3.5/5 ⭐
This book contains a tonne of Scottish language and folklore which was very interesting! The Scottish heritage is what made me want to read it to begin with.
There are 3 POVs from the female lead, male lead and the dog. Yes you heard right, the dog has a POV. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it really, it wasn't great but it wasn't terrible? So I am placed firmly in the middle of that one. There's some love, danger, romance, a bit of everything really.
There is great character AND world building throughout, which is a nice change of pace. The was so much world building that I think some stories could be made from that alone. There are a few twists and turns which I didn't expect, but the pace was generally slow. It wasn't slow enough to make me DNF but it's not up there in ranking for books I've read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Blink for allowing me to read this ARC - this is an HONEST review from my own personal opinion.
This book did not go where I was expecting in the best way possible. Even when I thought I could predict it, I could not. Our Divine Mischief is a YA fantasy that feels light-hearted and hopeful, it has a whimsical element to it. The found family trope including a dog that features as a main character is beautifully done and the conclusion made me feel nice things. Also the dog's POV being in limerick and poem form makes it all the more magical. It heavily includes Scottish folklore in its story-telling, though exposition that makes the reader understand how these legends played a part in culture. It was a really enjoyable read that I devoured so fast!
I can't give 4.5 stars here but I am happy to give it 5
Our Divine Mischief

I had some high hopes for this book but it there were many plot holes that I couldn’t quite ignore.
Áila is a girl who lives in a Scottish village where every person is either blessed by the goddess or Unblessed. She takes her Trial and something quite strange happens as she returns with a magical talking dog! The village priests find this rare and so she must face five Ordeals to prove her true nature. Her friend Hew is an outcast and the only person she can trust. Together they face a journey of adventure discovery, tricksters, war.
🐕 The idea of the divine, a magical dog and adventure drew me to this story.
🐕 The trial and ordeals were a nice spin.
Improvements
🐕 There is a subplot of an impending war but the book never explains why, and where did this come from? Who are these characters? How did it all begin? Need more details.
🐕 Inconsistencies with the magic concept created. Why couldn’t she break a wish bond from miles away if she willed it. Is there a distance factor here? The beach wasn’t an issue during the testing.
🐕 Too predictable. I knew what was going to happen with the dog and who the real antagonist was.
I unfortunately can not recommend this book based on what was missing and its inconsistencies.
Thank you to Blink and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this for an honest review.
A wonderful fairytale adventure set in Scotland. Told from 3 points of view, his hers and a magical dog.
I love that this book used scotish language and folklore. The characters were more realistic and relatable for it.
I really enjoyed Our Divine Mischief!
I haven't read many books that are based on Scottish folklore so I was really excited to read this one!
It was great! I really loved the world building and the characters were great.
I also absolutely loved Orail! How could I not love the talking dog!
I highly recommend this book!
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Our Divine Mischief.
The Scottish vibes in the worldbuilding definitely came across, which I enjoyed. I also wouldn't be surprised if Howard writes more novels set in this world in the future. The worldbuilding was deep enough that it felt like there are a lot more stories that would be told. The mythology lore did confuse me a tad at times, but I probably just missed something.
The characters were fun. Hew was probably my favorite. Orail was also really fun, and the bond between her and Aila was sweet.
The main plot of the novel takes a little to unfold--but not in that the pacing is slow. Rather, there are a few twists that have to happen first before the reader realizes the true stakes. And then things move rather quickly, though not rushed. I did see a part of the twist coming, but not all of it. I liked being surprised by what happened.
Our Divine Mischief was a charming read.
Cautions: light/moderate romance; two kisses; brief, non-graphic violence; two instances of swearing
I don’t think i’ve ever been so quickly swept up and thrown into a new world, with all its good, bad and love and danger, as i havé with this book.
The world building was intense and at times felt like the story was going too fast for me to grip onto what was happening, but in the end i came to enjoy that. It was a whirlwind from start to finish.
Orail was magical, truly the embodiment of any dog cherished so dearly as Aila cherished her. I sobbed multiple times, as is accustom with any dog involvement in storytelling (of course!)
The two MCs were inspiring and the little side of romance and angst was perfect next to the adventure theme throughout the book and helped to tie everything together nicely in the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would strongly recommend this to anyone who has ever dreamed of going on an adventure with their four legged best friend!
Thank you to Netgalley and to Blink publishers for gifting me this ARC.
I really didn’t know much about this book when I applied for it other than it had a pretty cover and featured mythology.
To start, one thing I struggled with was the names and the world building. The history is not explained super clearly and some of the titles and names were a bit confusing for about the first 30-35% of the story.
Other than that, I really liked the POVs, the mysterious element of the gods, and the romance in this story.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Our Divine Mischief is an amazing magical fantasy. This is based around Scottish folklore making for a super unique and interesting read full of intriguing characters. With a fast pace and a talking dog you won't want to put this down so if you love immersive adult fantasy full of magic I highly recommend this.

A fantasy book based on Scottish folklore-yes please!
This was fast paced and fun with interesting characters, plot and a talking dog which was very cute
The mc Aila was such a feisty girl and I loved her story and trials plus she is smart and witty
This was written beautifully and vividly, truly a story that I got completely immersed in
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC
As I imagine is the case for most readers, the cover of a book is what draws me in first. And I must say that this cover is just beautiful! That, combined with the mystical title and engaging synopsis, made me instantly curious.
I loved the lore of “Our Divine Mischief,” the magic and how it took place in a fictional version of Scotland (so near and dear to my heart!). I fell in love with Orail (I have such a bond with my dog, so that deep connection spoke to me a lot!), and found both Aila and Hew so endearing.
What a unique, lyrical, sweetly romantic fantasy! Grateful thanks to Blink, Harper Collins Focus and NetGalley for the most kind opportunity to review!
