This was a very nice, appropriately structured introduction for young children to Buddhist loving-kindness (metta) meditation. The wishes/thoughts used in the traditional meditation structure are preserved but reworded into a little song with more accessible vocabulary for a younger audience. It is also repeated several times throughout the book, helping it to stick. This book would be a great jumping-off point to work on establishing a daily practice with youngsters.
Raising kids in this world can be hard, especially knowing all the troubles and worries they will face. In Share Your Love Susan B. Katz presents the idea of meditating on positive, loving thoughts for ourselves and others. In lovely rhyme Katz walks the readers through all the creatures and people they can do this for, and I especially appreciated the part about doing it for someone you don’t like.
Katz discusses in her author’s note how these loving-kindness (Metta) meditations helped her through difficult times, and it reminded me of our special family prayer time each morning on our way to school. My boys will often say the same things, but that doesn’t make them any less meaningful, and they are learning while it isn’t always easy, praying for those who we don’t like and who don’t like us is just as important as praying for those we love.
Share Your Love is sweetly illustrated by Jennie Poh, and I know my boys loved all the cute critters she featured. Special thanks to Netgalley and Shambhala Publications for the opportunity to review this book. Share Your Love is out now. Check it out and let me know what you think!
Share Your Love is a beautifully illustrated book teaching young readers the importance of sending good thoughts out into the world: to yourself, to the people you love, to all you meet, even to people who make you angry or sad sometimes. Sending positive thoughts and wishing people well (and always remembering to include yourself in that!) is a wonderful lesson that all children should learn! Great for home, schools, or libraries! ❤️
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
This book has a nice sing song pattern that works quite well and includes a short, four stanza songs that children can memorize to share their love with people who are not around. This book is about looking for the good sides and life and that by sharing the good things and wishing others love and peace and hope, that everybody helps bring to the world. This book works and the illustrations are really fun. I’m not sure it’s something I would read frequently at story times, but I do see some kids and educators falling in love with it.
I just loved the message of this story SO MUCH. It really drives home the need to not only love yourself, but to love others so that you can lead a fulfilling and happy life. Ugh, I just loved this so much and think everyone needs to read it!
A simple children's story about being more accepting and offering love with happiness. Good artwork throughout as well. I'll be recommending this one.
Share Your Love is a beautiful book highlighting love and kindness. This playful book is laced with rhymes and focuses on how to send kind thoughts to help make the world a better place!
Young readers will delight in this magical book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a great book for children to think about how to share love, how to calm, and the joys of being kind. I can see this in a lower elementary classroom and as a goodnight book for my own kids when they were younger. A very sweet story and beautiful illustrations.
Very cute illustrations, but the text is a bit clunky and repetitive. The note at the end says it's to the tune of "happy birthday to you," but I couldn't quite get it to work in my head.
This is a sweet children’s book encouraging kids to send loving kindness to others. There’s a little rhyme they’re supposed to sing to others wishing them well and it is repeated often. At times the rhyming felt a little clumsy and kids may get tired of hearing the same little song again and again. The artwork is lovely and the sentiment is wonderful though.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of "Share Your Love". All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed that throughout the story, the idea of spreading love and well wishes is free and doesn't cost anything. In today's world, people are mean and kindness is free. It's important that we highlight we should be kind and think happy thoughts about everyone, even those who made us mad. Another thing I really enjoyed was that it discussed being kind to yourself. So often we worry about filling others up and letting ourselves become empty.
One thing that I would recommend is that the tune to the song is listed in the story, not just at the end in the author's note.
Share Your Love is full of adorable illustrations. The whimsy really put a smile on my face. The message for young children is empowering. I’m not sure it is very realistic to teach children that if they say this mantra to people repeatedly that all will be well in the world. That might just be the cynic in me. It’s very cute, but I’m not sure about the overall message.
