This definitely had me on the edge of my seat. I will also never be making friends with other moms on vacation and then spilling my darkest secrets to them.
good book, not the best but not the worst. i think givewn how many thrillers there are its hard to separate yourself and this one didnt stand out.
Five twisty turning stars for this one! The Mother At Number 5 is my favorite kind of book. It has a fast pace, relentless suspense, believable characters, and a whole bunch of shocking surprises.
The narrative takes place in present day England. We readers are introduced to two mothers, Roz and Lotte, who meet on vacation in Mallorca. Roz is married to Adam and they have two little girls. Lotte is a single mom of one girl. Lotte initiates a vacation friendship with Roz and the ladies have a wild night out clubbing together. Lotte flies home the next day and Roz, who is worried about what she might have said and done while she was in a drunken blackout, is relieved to think that she’ll never have to see Lotte again.
Then Lotte moves into a house around the corner from Roz and Adam.
That’s creepy enough, and soon it gets scarier as Lotte starts inserting herself into Roz and Adam’s life in every possible way. Roz’s intuition tells her Lotte has sinister motives, and gets frustrated when Adam dismisses her fears as “you’re being paranoid, again.” As the plot develops, we learn what Adam meant by “again” and we also discover Lotte’s true intentions.
I was gripped by every moment of this book! Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers and domestic noir.
I’m grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for giving me an advanced copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest feedback.
2.5 stars. I’ve not read anything by this author before but this one sounded good so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately I found it very slow and it dragged on quite a lot. I couldn’t get into it at all and by the end I didn’t really care what happened.
I met the mother once on our summer holiday and I let slip a terrible secret, something no one here must ever know… Fear rushes through me as I remember that night, but I’m sure I never told her where we live. As if she can read my mind she leans in close and says, ‘Don’t worry, you’d had a few drinks. Your secret’s safe with me.’ But I don’t trust her – why has she moved to my street?
I try to warn my kind, loving husband to stay away, but he laughs me off and invites her into our lives. When she lets my precious daughter get hurt, she’s gone too far. I know she’s here to destroy my perfect life.
Trigger warning!
This book will rattle you, shock you and even disgust you. A revenge story.
While I enjoyed the plot and twists I strongly dislikeed the main character, Rose.
Overall not a bad read.
Thank you Netgalley for the copy of this book!
Be careful who you pour your heart out to, because you never know. It might come back to bite you.
Hurt and anger combined result in to revenge. But how will you find those you are looking for? It's like a needle in a haystack and although you can never loose those feelings you will have to learn to live with them. Until that one day, when someone throws you the keys to unlock the door you have been waiting to open for such a long time.
Time to get the ball rolling...
I loved the story and followed the path the author took me on like a good girl, feeling sorry for a family and the horrible setbacks they were dealing with until there was that hairpin turn, making me gasp with what I was confronted with.
Can you ever totally trust someone? People often have dark secrets and want them to remain hidden because they want to save their own skin in the first place.
A story that reveals how vicious some can be and and don't seem to have any problems in lying to all and sundry. They are born, shameless actors fooling everyone around them and playing happy families.
I was a very captivating book I enjoyed listening to. The narrator did a very good job. 5 stars
Thank you
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house, narrator and the author for the opportunity to listen to a complimentary copy of this audiobook in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
First of all, the narrator did a good job, her cadence and tone was pleasant to listen to This is my first book by this author and I really wanted it to be more than it was. I really liked the twists, there were a few and although I guessed at most of them correctly, I still enjoyed listening to the story play out. I did feel the book was a bit long and dragged on in spots but overall was enjoyable.
The Mother at Number 5
by Jill Childs
Narrated by Charlie Norfolk
Rating 3.7/5.0
The Mother at Number 5 is a slow-paced psychological suspense novel.
Carlie Norfolk's narration was easy to listen to and understand. However, there wasn't much difference between the characters, which made it a little challenging at times if I hadn't paid attention to whose chapter it was (typically switched between Ros and Lottie). The book itself didn't really do much for me until the last half to third of it. That's when things got interesting and it really does have a great twist at the end. I'd say read it or listen if it sounds interesting, but it may not be quite as gripping as you might have hoped.
Thanks so much to NetGalley, Bookouture Audio and the author for the chance to listen to and review this book!
When I read the description for this book I was incredibly excited about it. It seemed right up my alley. However, as I began to listen to it, I realized that it just fell a little flat for me. It's disappointing because I really had high hopes for it. Sure, there were some twists, and little shocking moments, but as a whole this book just didn't do it for me.
"The Mother at Number 5" is fast paced, twisty domestic thriller with a nice twist and a really good ending. I listened to the audio book version of this book and the narrator did a very good job holding my attention and keeping the reading exciting.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for an advanced readers copy of this book for my honest review.
This book started out so slow and almost like a women’s fiction book and by the end I couldn’t believe the number of twists and turns this packed in. And while I didn’t really see the twists coming (one I almost kinda sorta worked out), but the bread crumb trails were there. While I might have said this had a little too much wow (yeah I know I am surprised I’m saying this), but since the twists weren’t coming out of left field, but with obvious hints and I missed them, I’ll retract that statement.
I am not sure I liked any of the characters, but I also think maybe this was the author’s intention. In the beginning, I could see the start of the framework of something, but once I realized what was going on, I needed to know which one of my guesses were right. Of course with my track record lately, maybe none of them. Secrets and trust are what all domestic thrillers seem to come down to and this one expertly used both. And make sure when you get close to the end, you can keep reading/listening as it went down to the wire to resolve one big issue.
I was able to both read and listen to this one and I enjoyed Charlie Norfolk’s narration. kept me wanting to find more time to listen. She used the author’s words and brought the story to life without overshadowing the plot.
It’s summer and definitely time for the twisty thrillers, so if you love those, I’d go into this one blind and throw your hands up and take the ride.
This was a wonderful read. The only problem I had was I had to go back. I got a little confused about the characters. All in all I really really like the book. I like the characters. I like the ending. I love the narrator. I don’t wanna say too much about it because it will give, the plot away. So thank you Netgalley and publisher,, for providing this advanced copy of the audiobook to me.
This one was pretty good I read it all in one sitting. Definitely recommending it to my friends who enjoy psychological thrillers books
A gripping read. Brilliant setting and relatable characters. Loved the narrators voice. Would recommend as a great holiday read!
I was on the edge of my seat at the end of this one! This mystery hits the sweet spot in having multiple twists and turns but keeping it from becoming so outlandish that the story requires you to suspend disbelief. I can't share much else about what I enjoyed without spoilers, but will share that I also enjoyed the complicated backstories and personalities of our two first person narrators. I will also enjoyed that it didn't seem to fall into some of the current "hot" tropes for mystery novels. As much as I sometimes enjoy those, this was a fresh take, allowing it to stand out form the crowd for me.
I wasn’t sure how this storyline was going to unfold or if it was even for me. I wasn’t really fully engaged till about 50% in. It was to slow paced for me, so much so it felt like there wasn’t much happening. The plot jumped around a bit when it came to timelines and it would have helped to have 2 narrators when it came to 2 main characters. I can’t say if I actually liked the characters, I could take them or leave them. I was a little intrigued when things did start to unravel and come together as there were a few surprises and some of my questions got answered.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to #TheMotherAtNumber5
I was immediately drawn in by this one because domestic thrillers are my favorite genre and I found the concept to be exciting. The execution was a bit slow in parts so I did find myself losing interest in a few spots but was able to be drawn back in eventually. I think the character development was pretty spot on but none of the characters really resonated with me despite that. I cant pinpoint exactly why but they just seemed a bit one dimensional. The narration was well done and managed to hold my attention during the slower parts.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for giving me the opportunity to listen and review this audiobook. in exchange for an honest review.
Ros and Lottie meet on vacation. On an alcohol driven night out together Lottie encourages Ros to share her deepest secrets. Something Ros reluctantly does and a decision she will soon regret. At home from their vacation Ros notices a moving van next door. When Ros realizes it is Lottie she has her suspicions that Lottie is trying to get to close and hurt her family. Ros’ oldest daughter Sophie is already acting out at home and at school with some strange behavior. But Lottie may have underestimated how far Ros will go to protect her family.
The pace was a bit slow but the narrator was great and the twists and turns made this novel very enjoyable.
Thanks to NetGalley for this loan of this audiobook for my honest review.
A woman's past, the death of her baby sister collides with her now future. What would you do if you got the chance to meet up again with the guys who were responsible for your baby sister's death. 20 yrs later, we will find out.
Roz and Lottie become fast friends on a vacation holiday. But now back at home Lottie has moved in by Ros and has even enrolled her daughter into the same classroom as Ros's daughter
Ros can't seem how this is a coincidence when this woman was just a vacation friend, but has now inserted herself into their lives and it seems she has alternate motives for doing so
This #psychologicalthriller is quite an exceptional one! The first chapter grabbed my attention and I was shocked at the twists! Narrated by #CharlieNorfolk, the audiobook is a must-listen!
