JLA always has a way of hooking the reader in from the start (eg, From Blood and Ash) with her early character framework and world building. While this was only a advance reader sample, I am excited to acquire this book and to read more to see what Calista has in store…
It's hard to get a good idea of the book by only a preview, but what I read intrigued me. Based on the author alone, my library will buy a copy. I'm looking forward to reading more of this book and series!
Thank you to NetGalley, Tor Publishing, and Jennifer Armentrout for the advanced preview of this book.
Okay, so this was only a preview, only the prologue and first three chapters. But Jennifer Armentrout has a way of sucking the reader in from the very first paragraph. She has a style that is so uniquely her own with character traits that tend to jump from series to series (granted, I've only ever read her more fantastical series, but strong FMC with a penchant for daggers? It's been in every one) even while the characters themselves are wildly different.
I was counting down the hours until this book released. And now, two days after it has, I feel as if I'm counting down the unknowable hours until the next book is in my hands. Fall of Ruin and Wrath was addictive, steamy, anxiety-inducing, and compelling. The world building and history is interesting, if still a little surface level. I'll be intrigued to see how it expands in future novels. With JLA's Blood and Ash and Flesh and Fire series coming to a close within the next year, I'm beyond grateful to have a new world of hers to dive into.
One of my favorite things about this novel, about all her novels, is how elaborate and well-detailed the characters are. And not just the main characters. Armentrout has a way of making me fall in love with side characters who may only speak a handful of times but I instantly care about their well being. I question their motives and whether they're loyal to our main pairing. There are just so many roads to travel in this book.
The preview is a taste, it's an appetizer. Something to whet you palate. And you'll want more. You'll want more after the final page of the final chapter, ensuring you become yet another JLA fan for life.
Thank you NetGalley and Tor Publishing for allowing me to read an advanced sample copy of Fall of Ruin and Wrath by Jennifer L. Armentrout.
I just want to preface this review by stating that I do not have much experience with Armentrout's writing style and various series, but after reading this sample that will definitely change! I have heard tons of praise for her Blood and Ash series (which I'll admit has been on my TBR list for the longest), and after sampling "Fall of Ruin and Wrath" I can guarantee that I will finally take the plunge and crack open FBAA.
From page one, I was drawn into Calista's story and the world around her. The writing was imbedded with the perfect amount of suspense; enough to keep me on the edge of my seat and wanting to know more, but not so much that I found myself skimming through and rushing ahead to satiate my own curiosity. Calista's character actually felt fleshed out, and I found myself empathizing with her right away. I enjoyed the introduction to her and Grady's dynamic in the story's prologue, and I look forward to learning more about their relationship and how things progress as the story continues.
Overall, a great start to her new fantasy romance. I can't wait to pick up a copy on release day and explore more of her latest universe. Thank you again to NetGalley and Tor Publishing for the advanced sample!
From the short preview provided this seems to fall in line with her other series in writing style. Based on that I think our customers will be pre ordering it and sales will be positive. Our customers enjoy her writing, more of the most recent series vs older ones but definitely has a following.
Having only a sample of the story, it’s hard to provide a review but I can say that I would keep reading if I had more to do so. The characters so far are interesting and the main character has enough of a teased back story that I’m interested in learning more. As far as fantasy romance goes, this is a good start. I’m excited for when the book comes out so I can read the rest.
This was just a part of the story but in Armentrout fashion, I need the rest of it right! I love her books and can't wait to finish this new fantasy by her!
Thank you for an ARC of this sample. But, Why, oh, why is this only a sample?!? This is so good!!! I need more! September 12th seems like forever away! 😭🥹 The world building is amazing and unique. The characters are interesting. I need to know what’s going to happen! 😂
I can’t wait to read the whole story 🖤
*not so patiently waiting for the pub date*
I am shocked at where it ends. I want and need more of this book already. The FMC has interesting abilities that I can’t wait to see unfold. I have many questions about this possible war and the highborn lord she feels this intense reaction for. I wonder how the book will continue, but already an amazing start.
It is difficult to truly review a book based on only the first few chapters, but I did enjoy this sample of Jennifer L Armentrout's newest book. There is quite a bit of worldbuilding, as one would expect from a fantasy novel, but it was quite dense to try and make sense of at times. To be honest, I didn't fully understand all of the info dumping about the government and social structures and types of powers. Presumably if one reads the full book this would all make sense. I do plan to read the full book when it is published, and can give a full review after reading.
Fall of Ruin and Wrath is the first in a new series for Jennifer Armentrout. I have read and enjoyed her Blood and Ash, and Flesh and Fire series and was excited to receive this title. Though this was only a sample I did receive the full ARC through my job.I found I actually enjoyed this one more than her previous series.
"Fall of Ruin and Wrath" by Jennifer L. Armentrout delivers a scorching and immersive fantasy romance that will captivate readers from the very first page. In a world divided by chaos and ruled by guardians who feed on mortal pleasure, Calista's unique intuition becomes her greatest asset and vulnerability. Armentrout skillfully crafts a rich and vivid setting, blending elements of danger, desire, and the supernatural. The chemistry between Calista and the traveling prince ignites the pages, and their complex dynamic adds layers of tension to an already intricate plot. As the city grapples with rebellion and uncertainty, Calista's choices become pivotal, forcing her to navigate the treacherous paths of loyalty and love. Armentrout's writing is lush and compelling, drawing readers into a world where intrigue and romance intertwine seamlessly. The story's fast-paced narrative and expertly woven suspense will keep readers on the edge of their seats. "Fall of Ruin and Wrath" is a testament to Armentrout's storytelling prowess, offering an intoxicating blend of fantasy, romance, and suspense that will leave readers eager for more.
Even though it was only a sample, what I read was a true delight! It has been a long time since I have read a fantasy that was as richly drawn and excellently written as this one! The characters were wonderful, the romance perfect, and the fantasy world excellent and detailed, rich world that I got lost in. An excellent story and wonderful chemistry between the characters made the pages fly by. Five stars!
It’s hard to get a real vibe from the book from a sampler, but it definitely has JLA flair. I was originally disappointed it wasn’t more of the from blood and ash world, but I’m definitely intrigued and buying this one!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This was my first Armentrout novel, and I throughly enjoyed it. Her world building is in my top 10, and she shows how simple and complex what it means to someone who is longing to just touch another being.
Lis is your MFC and you learn early on about her gifts and her past, and what that means for her future. Intuition is always a good guide, but what if it leads you to more than you asked?
I luckily got a full ARC from work so I am continuing, but wanted to pop in and say so far it is a slow start with the world building, but there's also foreshadowing and explanations of each character. I'm so excited to continue reading.
I really enjoyed reading the first three chapters of this book and look forward to reading the rest when it comes out. The only issue was the physical structure of the writing - lots of elipses which were very distracting. Maybe find a way to edit? Thank you for giving me the sample to read and review.
Even though I only received a sample, I am giving this book a 5 star based on expectations I have of the author from reading her previous work. In hind sight I should not have read this sample, because I CANNOT WAIT to read the entire book! Very excited to hear more about these characters.
Thanks to Netgalley for sending me this preview! Looking forward to reading the rest of this new fantasy romance.
Although there is a lot going on in the first chapter or two that we are able to read before publication, I definitely got sucked into the world that Calista lives in. I haven't read any books by Jennifer Armentrout but I'm looking forward to getting this as soon as I can!
Thank you Netgalley for the sample of Fall of Ruin and Wrath. All opinions are my own.
