extremely informative and necessary. short but also gets important info across that all queer and non queer people should read to help educate themselves. also the illustrations were great!
Absolutely loved this book. As someone with a complex sexuality who's part of the LGBTQ+ community, I've always been interested in gender too but since I've started to date my non-binary partner 2 years ago, I've been learning a lot more. However, I've learnt even more spending the last hour reading this 40 page graphic novel ☺️ I love this graphic novels factual, clearly written and extremely informative approach to gender, biological sex, sexuality, culture, and neurodiversity and how these all intersect in a variety of possibilities. With a no nonsense attitude, and inclusion in every way, I loved this book and found it was accessible as a general reader wanting to learn more, while still being socially, culturally and medically informative for medical professionals and academics. I'm already looking forward to suggesting this to people, and to using what I've learnt as a spring-board to learning even more!
I cannot get over how stunning the illustrations in this book are. Goetz has a really unique style and this book is just so beautiful to read.
Gender is Really Strange is a really helpful primer on some of the history and context around the modern discussions of gender. It takes a great overview of the history (and western white influence) on our modern concepts of gender, and gives an overview of the various pieces of the gender discussion. It has a helpful scientific component around some of the chemicals around sex and gender which I found particularly fascinating.
This is by no means a comprehensive discussion on the topic, but a great place to start, especially if talking about gender feels particularly overwhelming.
I loved the diverse representation of cultures in this book and how clearly it discussed the topic of gender.
The illustrations were colourful but didn’t distract from the overall message of the book.
This was an excellent and very informative little pamphlet about gender. I have wanted to better understand the gender spectrum and this was an excellent, science-based approach. I feel like this should be a readily available pamphlet for everyone! It was short to read and easy to understand.
This book had a lot of helpful information that could help many of people who are questioning their gender or even a parent who is trying to understand their child who is questioning themselves.
This book goes into detail of what each gender is and has graphics of what a person of that gender may look like or experience. It also has really good graphics of the different gender flags that help people express their gender without actually having to voice it if they are uncomfortable.
This book also goes into details about different religions and cultures and what someone of these religions or cultures might be taught to believe in when it comes to gender.
A succinct but thorough primer to the concept of gender, sex, and how they are and aren't related, this book combines simple and aesthetically pleasing graphics with well-researched, factual information that covers the basics (or at least things I already knew) with some more in-depth discussion of the history of gender identities or lack thereof in different cultures and the state of research on sex and gender (which I didn't know). The only thing about this book that could give someone pause is that the more scientific bits can get a little hard for the layperson to understand, but I think the writer tried to make the information as accessible as possible without losing valuable details, so perhaps that's just unavoidable. Either way, it's cool to have a fairly comprehensive intro guide to the topic, and this book could serve as an effective educational resource for people with all levels of knowledge about gender.
Thank you NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for the copy of Gender is Really Strange!
Like many have said, this is an INCREDIBLE book. So much information packed in few pages but still very accessible. I love how it covers and acknowledges that racism, colonialism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and gender discrimination are all related! The art style is also on another level--very distinct style but fits the topic well!
An amazing tool for continuing education.
Thanks so much to NetGalley for the ARC!
This. Is. INCREDIBLE! The illustrations are amazing, the writing is informative but accessible, and the information is so CRITICAL. I cannot wait for this book to be out in the world, and I genuinely hope people pick it up and read it. It's one I know I'll need to return to so I can continue my own education - so so glad this book exists.
Check it out!
I'm really glad this exists. I hope that people who want to be educated in understanding Gender will read it, I know that there is immovable people though so it would be good if at least people who want to learn will do.
This is an easy to digest way of looking at gender whilst giving you all the information you need.
This is a fact driven book which has been set out in a way that anyone from middle-grade upwards can understand it.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
i loved how informative this was! i would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about gender and experiences with it in more detail :) it was very insightful and the illustrations were very pretty. as someone pretty well informed about gender complexity and varying experience i still feel like i gained a lot of knowledge from this.
This was wonderful. I feel like this book should be available in schools, it’s the perfect book to introduce gender and help offer the tools to question it. It made me think and helped me understand which is honestly perfect. Alongside that, it makes the topic of gender feel ‘normal’ (which it should be!!) and the fact that it’s only 40 pages long makes it so digestible and not intimidating. I cannot wait until this is published so I can buy this book for my friends!
I read this in one sitting and I intend to come back to this book to read it again and continue to learn.
This is a good introduction to the different ways people/cultures think about gender, and it also goes into the science of the source of our ideas about gender. It gets a little technical when discussing hormones, but other than that, it was very simple to read.
I loved the illustrations and color scheme throughout. For it being short in length, it was thorough.
This informative graphic novel was extremely helpful in helping me understand how gender works — not only in our culture but cultures all around the world. Gender is something so special and different to everyone and this graphic novel clearly explains how important it is to ~listen~ and be open. The reason it wasn’t 5 stars is because I expected it to be an easier read for a tad younger audience, but I still found it very informative.
Gorgeous artwork and a very important and timely subject, written about with authority and for a wide audience, but I was under the impression that the book would be longer than forty pages.
This book reads like an illustrated high school textbook chapter, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just not what I was expecting. The color palette is really nice, but the way the information is presented is a bit dry. I’d recommend if you (or your teen) are brand new to learning about concepts around gender.
Despite the 40 pages, it's very informative & scientifically written. The content goes fully in-depth into the societal, biological & historical aspects of gender. A must read.
Thank you to the author and the publisher for this arc through netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was a beautifully illustrated graphic novel. I enjoyed reading all of the very interesting facts about gender.
A great illustrated introduction to gender! most of the information is presented in easy to understand layman's terms, but it does get a little dense in some areas. Overall a great nonfiction guide. References are included. The illustrations are so pleasing to look at!
I found this a bit overwhelming to read due to it being very information heavy but that is 100% on me. Its interesting and I'll pick it up again in the future when I'm more ready to read it. Highly recommend to those wanting to learn more on this topic.
