I received an ARC of this book thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op in exchange for an honest review.
What an absolute blast this book is!
Slasher Witch at the Waterpark is a farcical horror comedy book about a witch killing a bunch of people at a waterpark. It is equal parts ridiculous and fun, with a lot of creative deaths and details which made this book such a delight to read. An ancient witch getting drunk off frozen margaritas whilst she murders dozens of people? Timeless.
There's honestly not much else to say about this book. The title tells you what you are in for, and it certainly delivers. I will say, I genuinely did love the range and creativity behind the deaths and the horror. Parts of the waterpark start coming to life, sea creatures reign terror and the skies open up to meteorological horrors. There are a few gross moments to be aware of but I am usually quite sensitive to certain elements (bodily fluids etc) and I found it manageable. If you're looking for a fun horror read that is goofy in all the right ways, I cannot recommend this more!
Overall Rating: 3.5/5 stars
I wanted to like this book it sounded soooo fun and campy although it ended up being a little too campy that it bordered on cringe.
Thank you Netgalley and the publishing house for sending me this e-arc to read and review. This book was just okay in my opinion, not bad, but not amazing.

As summer is winding down and fading into fall I find myself trying to squeeze in as many Summer themed books as I can. What better fit than a horror comedy that takes place at a waterpark!
Oh my gosh, I am so glad I read this one. I am a huge fan of horror comedy and this one was top tier entertainment- equal parts humor and gore. This novella does not waste any time getting into the "good" stuff, the action starts right in the beginning and doesn't let up.
I really enjoyed the way this one was written- with jumping POVs throughout. This can be a tough thing to do, and I often find it makes a story drag or I find myself annoyed when I get "stuck" with a character or a bit of the plot I'm just not interested in. This was not a problem with Slasher Witch at all. All 0f the characters and story lines were a blast. I even found myself getting attached to characters, momentarily forgetting I was reading a horror and then dealing with the emotional rollercoaster that ensued when I realized there was a good chance whey were about to die, haha!
I think my favorite was the time spent with Zelda (the witch) who after centuries of sleeping wakes up and tries to navigate the confusion of her both being turned into a waterpark. She just has the best time at the park with her stuffy and "Fro Fro" and turning the beautiful park into a nightmarish hellscape.
I look so forward to reading more by this author and hopefully seeing more of Zelda!
The waterpark has a grand opening and Zelda, the bog witch, is awakened from an ancient slumber. The whole town has come to ride all the rides, slide the Whirly Curly slide, splash and squirt with Mr. Octopus and deep dive with Sully the Seal. Stinking and covered in sludge, Zelda makes a fuss and when security asks her to leave the massacre begins. The waterpark comes to life with wet rides that kill. It’s a slasher-fest, gore, summer-fun nightmare. Could you escape the wrath of the bog witch?
What a fun and enjoyable, yet disgustingly horrific little read. Moonz even says herself that you need to go into this book with a sense of humour and if you do, trust me…it’s a riot! I adored the characterisation of Zelda, our sassy swamp witch protagonist and her response to a waterpark being built on her home. Filled with laughs and screams, I will definitely never ever look at Sea World or any other water park the same again, that’s for sure!
🕸My Thoughts🕸
I LOVED this book. It's the perfect summer read, especially if you are going to a waterpark. Lots of chaos, gore, murderous park mascots, and fruity alcoholic beverages. Maybe thinking a drunk, murderous bog witch is delightful says more about me than it does the book but whatever, Zelda has stayed with me the entire month since I read this book and I'm glad for it. Definitely pick this one up!
Thank you to @netgalley and @creeperslandia for the ebook copy.
This book was silly, and I can appreciate a silly book that knows it's silly. However, it was also not well written which was a great shame. It seemed to rely too heavily on gory description at the expense of plot and narrative structure. Frequently, there would be spelling/grammar mistakes and the events of the story seemed more like a list than a narrative.
I think the premise here was good and enjoyable, but the author needs to refine it further if it's going to make any sort of impact.
Slasher Witch at the Waterpark was a quick and fun horror read for the summertime! I loved the comedy aspects and that you don't have to take the story too seriously to enjoy it!
Slasher Witch is a fun, quick summer read for lovers of horror and comedy wrapped in one. The author prefaces the book letting you know off the bat to essentially not take the book too seriously and that it was meant to be silly and fun. It definitely delivered entertainment.
A new water park has been built over Zelda the Witch’s bog and she’s mad. All she wants is peace and quiet and her margaritas and how dare people come to her bog for water slides and fried Oreos. Zelda decides to teach these people a lesson and unleashed terror on the masses.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review!
Such a fun scary book that kept me on the edge of my seat. A one night read, Thank you to the publisher for the ARC.
not too bad for a silly read but it really wasn't my cup of tea. way too many repetitions (muck, murk, muggy, inner tube, lily pad) and different POVs all over the place
the witch didn't make any sense, it felt so incoherent that she was able to transform into a tall slender figure but also a hunchback monster but also she controls hurricanes but also she walks like a crab???? and the frog pirates were so badly described I could never understand which parts were human which were frog like, and how do they hop?? with frog or human legs??? while we're in the incoherent segment, I almost DNFed just because of the slides part, it made no sense whatsoever which tube went where and how the people in the slides moved. the spacial descriptions were insufficient to say the least
I'm always up for a slasher story but this one let me down, I do believe the author has potential with her bog witch if she goes deeper and tackles the backstory and world building a bit more seriously. I get that this was a fun writing idea after a tiktok joke or whatever but tiktok jokes don't get published without a little serious work first 🙏
This book is such a perfect slasher summer read. The visuals in the scenes and the setting was described in such detail that it felt so vibrant. Zelda was such a fun character to follow from her discovery of the modern world, to her reactions with the people she would come across. What I also loved was the killer mermaid and seal! This book is so visually pleasing to the imagination and makes me want to take a family trip to my local waterpark. This book read as a campy 80’s movie, which is hard not to love if you are a horror fan! Also the book cover is absolutely gorgeous! I will definitely be purchasing a physical copy for my bookshelf! Can’t wait to read more of Zelda the bog witch
Zelda of the bog!!! Oh how I love a good slasher horror book! The imagery from the author makes you feel like you are there fighting the frogs, mermaid and octopus along with the patrons! Lots of gore of course and some humor to lighten things up! Zelda drinking was my favorite part of the book, witches need strawberry daiquiris too! Overall a great fun quick read!
I spent many summers as a kid at water parks and I can easily picture this terrifying and silly tragedy. The body count is high so don’t think an entertaining setting means no gore. This is a fun novella, perfect for summer. Thanks to NetGalley for a digital copy.
Thank you so much to Victory Editing and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
A new fun water theme park has opened up, it’s packed full of people having the best day ever, but one boy awakens the sleeping bog witch, so the next day disturbed from her slumbers she descends all sorts of horror attacks on the people that are there for a fun day.
The story was very fascinating and was a good read, I enjoyed the concept and the theme park of horror premise. I did find that it was quite slow paced to actually start getting into it all, but you do get into it the more you read. It could certainly have done with a lot more blood and gore being described as it seemed pretty mild for this sort of book, but didn’t stop me from enjoying it. It was very reminiscent to the 80’s/90’s slasher movies you expect which is awesome and exactly what drew me towards wanting to read this.
I actually really loved the bog witch Zelda I know she’s the villain but, I couldn’t help it at all she made me laugh and was the most entertaining character. She was rudely woken up with people and new things trespassing her land and she was curious about it all. She made it a fun theme park for herself, full of evil creatures gone rogue and lots of blood and body parts. She explored the whole place, got so many fruity Ice drinks and collectibles. She had the time of her life. She was hilarious and literally made this book.
The other characters weren’t the most fascinating and there were way too many characters also, each one brought into the story over explained with so much over detail which wasn’t really needed. Especially as most were in the story for a second so we didn’t need every tiny detail. I did find one thing that really annoyed me with the over details that was not necessary at all which was the constant need to remark that people were fat, over weight or pot bellied, it was constant and rude honestly.
This was a really interesting slasher horror book and I did enjoy it quite a lot, it could have certainly shared a bit more of the gore stuff than it did but it was still an amazing and fun slasher book. I think a lot of people that love these kind of stories or the movies of this style would love it. These are always such fun reads as they are not to be taken seriously funny horror slashers. And you’ll instantly love Zelda, trust me.
Slasher Witch at the Waterpark is so unserious in the best most gory and horrific ways!
Penny Moonz latest gory thriller is a story that reads exactly like a B-horror movie. Exactly the type of stories that I love. It's campy, it's detailed, and it's quite fantastic. This story follows exactly what it says, a scary witch is released from a bog in which a Waterpark has just opened. Horror and hilarity ensue when the normal patrons of this waterpark must survive this vengeful witch.
This book is a short hysterical vengeful ride. However, for as much comedy as there is in this novel. There are truly some great terrifying scenes. As someone, who is not a huge fan of amusement parks, this is the setting out of my nightmare. Gore filled water slides? Count me horrified!
This book is definitely something I enjoyed and I think horror and thriller readers will love it too!
Thank you to Netgalley for the Arc!
This book was an incredibly fun, silly, and fast-paced slasher story with a comical witch main character. Zelda is a bog witch who was awoken from her slumber and decides to wreak havoc in a water park. There is plenty of gore to go around in this entertaining and quick read! In the preface, Penny Moonz disclaims that this book is to not be taken too seriously, and is a silly slasher book. This is exactly what they deliver with a whole cast of horrifying monsters — it was extremely outrageous and fun!
Overall, this book was a very entertaining read filled with gore and hilarious actions from the slimy bog witch! I would definitely read more from Penny Moonz.
This book may "understand the brief" better than just about anything I've read recently. Does it elevate, does it burst with emotional intelligence or deep personal truths? No. But if you came into "Slasher Witch at the Waterpark" looking for those things, I think the problem may not be with the book.
Penny Moonz promises, in this book, bog witch mayhem in a waterpark, and by God if that isn't exactly what they deliver. Horrifying mermaids, octopus monsters, frog pirates, and a hilariously crude bog witch fill this slim volume, making it a brutal, hilarious ride.
It's not for everyone, but if you're looking for a crude, crazy trip, this is quite the adventure. Big bonus for being a lightning quick read.
I love it when books don't take themselves too seriously. That makes it loads of fun. And this was just outrageous. Zelda the Bog Witch and her friends were amazingly funny characters, and like a lot of reviews say, I also wished there was more focus on them than on all the side characters. But I am happy to read that here are more Zelda books coming!
This book contained a scene that was similar to one scene in a nightmare I had as a kid and I still remember. Something with a slide and something sharp. So this was a vivid one for me 😂
One thing I did not really like were most of the descriptions of people when they got first introduced. Some of those felt a little insensitive and simplistic to me. Also, they were not very important to the story itself.
