Never knowing when a bomb will drop would wreck your nerves as it did mine whilst reading. I felt for the characters in this brilliant emotional historical saga.

A brilliant read and one I really enjoyed. The characters are loveable and varied, the plot is one that is engaging and medium paced. I found myself completely drawn into the story and enjoyed the writing style.

A very good 2 saga about three sisters who lose everything in the blitz. Helping to help others via the WVS leads to a further story. This is a great series and one to follow.5 stars

I have read half of this book but am not enjoying the storyline and therefore won't be completing it - I have persevered to this point and have no desire to read more. Whilst there are some strong points, such as this being about a young girl coming of age, it is quite monotonous in places. The story doesn't move quickly enough and there isn't enough drama to ignite ongoing interest.

I have considered that there are some depths to the story, including the way Clemmie is surprised by her own abilities because of her social class. This is a tale that could have been better drawn out, rather than first person reflections. Perhaps an antagonist who tries to keep Clemmie down.

The most exciting part so far is the discovery of fraud by her employer. This would have kept me interested if there were more 'tid-bits' to feed off.

I won't be writing a full review, as I have read only half. Based on what I have read: 2 stars.

This is the first book that I’ve read by this author. Having said that I’ve just bought A Wartime Summer which is apparently the first book of this series. Although I haven’t read them in order A Wartime Welcome was still a great read and it’s fine that you’ve not read the other book first. I’m sure like me you will enjoy the book so much you’ll want to find out more about May, Clemmie and Pearl the three sisters who get bombed out during the war and end moving away from each other. This book is Clemmie’s story of how she survives with no home and only her clothes she is wearing. The first book is about May her elder sister who gets a job on a farm. I look forward to reading that book and I hope that Rosie will also write a third book telling us about what happens to Pearl too. If you like a wartime saga I can recommend this series.

Having read every book of Rosie Meddon's, I was delighted to read this latest installment. It is the second of a series and fits in beautifully with the first one. The author has done a superb job of writing well within the era and she has a knack for making both the laughter and the tears flow in different parts of the book. I'll be eagerly anticipating Pearl's story!

Second in the series with this being the story of the youngest sister, Clemmie. The three girls have been bombed out, May has gone to be housekeeper at a farm near Crediton (book one) leaving Pearl and Clemmie to find work. Clemmie finds a part-time job at a corner store but mostly helps out with the WVS where she definitely matures a lot, gains confidence in herself and becomes invaluable to the ladies. She takes on liaison with Americans about to be posted nearby with the able support of Squadron Leader Dunning. He's a war hero, paraplegic and down to earth.. Of course they fall for each other in a slowly developing way. Their romance amidst the horrors and consequences of the bombings makes hope feel alive. The descriptions of the trials, limitations, tribulations in war-torn England feel oh so real. Pearl is brought in a few times, as is May, and the ending has the feeling of what might be Pearl's story next. Clemmie's job and its issues feel rather redundant in many respects and I did keep wondering if the awful step-father might not have been killed when the bomb hit. This book was just as good as the first.

When May, Pearl and Clemmie lose everything after their house is turned to rubble following bombing in the area, they have to depend on the kindness of the WVS.

Clemmie wants to give something back for their help and volunteers to help them with the donations they receive, ensuring families get what they need. She doesn’t realise that this is the start of her future.

Miss Evercott then offers Clemmie a place to stay, in her house, where she becomes more confident with her help.

She was always the quiet one out of all the sisters. Now she’s going to committee meetings, helping in planning how to welcome American troops, in the process she gets to know squadron leader Andrew Dunning.

I can’t wait for the next book and read about Pearl and her story.

I recommend this book.

The 2nd book in the series about 3 sisters and how their lives change after bomb destroyed their house. A great saga and looking forward to the next book.

MY REVIEW:
This book follows Clemmie, a shy, insecure young woman who becomes involved in the war effort and gains confidence and her own identity.

When she meets Dunning, a friendship is forged. Dunning isn’t the typical wounded hero, full of angst. Instead, he has accepted his injury and the impact that will have on his life going forward. It was refreshing to see this.

The blossoming relationship between Dunning and Clemmie was tender and sweet, and depicted the time period perfectly.

This was such a sweet read, and can easily be read in an hour.

A very sweet love story between an earnest, wounded hero and an inexperienced heroine, “A Wartime Welcome”, by Rosie Meddon (Canelo), shows romance blossoming in a time of devastation and war.
The characters are engaging and relatable and the historical and geographical setting – Great Britain in World War II – very compelling.
Clemmie is a shy and a bit insecure young woman who slowly gets involved in the war effort and gains confidence. I liked how she managed to rise from the destruction and uncertainty and, in a way, find her own identity.
The hero, Andrew, seemed a bit flat in the beginning, but we realize later he has a down-to-earth, easy-going personality and a rational way of facing challenges.
I liked the sobriety when he talks about the paralysis and its consequences and impact.
He’s not the typical wounded hero, full of angst, and and I appreciated the twist and his common sense, humor and optimism.
Watching the sisters navigate the uncertainty and devastation of war was a humbling experience.
The crush Clemmie has for Dunning is so cute to watch. The tenderness between them was sweet and goes well with the well-depicted historical period.
The secondary characters are interesting, too.

This second in the series was every bit as enjoyable as the first.
After being bombed out of their home sisters May, Pearl and Clemmie rely on the goodwill of the wvs. Clemmie was willing to repay this by offering to assist them with sorting out donations, little knowing that this small step could map out her future. This is kicked by Miss Evercott who offers Clemmie somewhere to stay, and under whose guidance she just blossoms.
Going from the quietest of the three sister to attending committee meetings to help welcome the incoming American troops where she becomes friendly with squadron leader Andrew Dunning.
What more can I say, I can’t wait for Pearl’s story!

Fantastic instalment of the Huxley sisters. The first book concentrates on May and this book concentrates on Clemmie. Well written to show her growing up in the war years and how she comes to life without her two sisters to hold her up.
Clemmie becomes a force to be reckoned with within the WVS and she finds more than herself.
Can’t wait for the next book which hopefully will tell the story of Peggy the youngest sister.
