Loved reading this book. Amazing story and the characters lend to the charm of this book. I would highly recommend this book. You would not be disappointed.
“Lost Little Angels” is a gripping thriller that delves into the harrowing world of child abduction and the dark secrets of a small town. The novel is the second installment in the Detective Eve Bennet series. The story begins with a heart-wrenching scene where a mother discovers her baby daughter’s crib is empty. The disappearance sets off a chain of events that lead Detective Eve Bennet to receive a mysterious phone call, informing her that this isn’t an isolated incident—many children and their mothers have gone missing. The caller’s message is clear: “She isn’t the first. There are many, many more.”
As Eve and her team of specialists delve into the investigation, they are drawn to the small town of Hilldale, a place Eve hoped never to return to. Governed by a prophet and his male followers, Hilldale is a town where women are treated as mere chattels, and the community lives under the thumb of a twisted religious doctrine. The investigation reveals a chilling pattern of abductions, and Eve must confront her own past to unravel the mystery.
The novel is fast-paced and relentless, with a tension that builds steadily throughout the book. The author does an excellent job of creating a sense of urgency that mirrors Eve’s race against time to save the missing children. The setting of Hilldale is particularly well-drawn, with its oppressive atmosphere and the palpable fear of its inhabitants adding depth to the story. The character of Detective Eve Bennet is a standout, portrayed as a strong and determined leader who is haunted by her history with the town. Her team is depicted as a close-knit group, each member bringing their unique expertise to the table. The dynamics within the team add a layer of warmth to the otherwise dark narrative.
The novel’s resolution is satisfying and the author’s ability to balance the thrill of the chase with the emotional depth of her characters is commendable.
If you’re looking for an original hero then look no further. Eve Bennet is like no other detective and her team are just as interesting. I enjoyed Lost Little Angels despite feeling so frustrated by the lives the women have to live.
You don’t have to have read Holly Robert’s first book which is set in the same sort of situation as this one but I would advise you do b3vausevto me the first book was the better one.
Lost Little Angels (Detective Eve Bennet Book 2) by Holly S. Roberts
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: General Fiction (Adult) | Mystery & Thrillers

Lost Little Angels is the second book in the Detective Eve Bennet series by Holly S. Roberts. This book can be enjoyed as a standalone mystery or as part of the series.
Detective Eve Bennet has such interesting life experiences that makes her uniquely qualified to investigate crime that occurs in a small town in Utah, that is home to a polygamous sect and lots of secrets.
I thought this story was fascinating! I loved the twists and turns and watching the team of detectives work to solve this horrific crime!
This book captured true horrors and had me on the edge of my seat. I could not put this book down. I was captivated by it and as much as I wanted to know how things would work out, I did not want it to end.
This is a must read book for 2023! I am absolutely hooked on this series!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Another look inside the fundamentalist polygamy faith.
While this is a work of fiction the issues it covers are real and all the more unbelievable because of that.
An enjoyable and educational read
Roberts has done it again! Lost Little Angels is a fantastic read from beginning to end. I loved the previous book but I think I love this one even more.
Eve and her team are back, only this time the case is even more disturbing and twisted than the previous. Eve will be dragged back to Hilldale to discover some real disgusting facts about some of the residents.
I absolutely adore Roberts, very quickly she’s shot to the favourites of Bookouture authors. I adore how unique her work is from others within the genre. Roberts is not afraid to take her readers to the dark side.
The interactions with Aaron are as tense and difficult as ever. It’s frustrating as a reader, because you just want Eve to punch him right between the eyes. Little Lost Angels reveals that babies are being taken from their mothers and it’s Eve’s mission to bring the perpetrators to justice.
This is a rollercoaster read. Roberts really takes you through each aspect of this and it’s more shocking than the previous. I wasn’t sure this book could beat the previous but it definitely has done that.
I was pulled into this one instantly. This is a book unlike any other I’ve read. I loved revisiting Eve and the team, I’m already so excited to see what is coming next. Can it be as good as the first two books?
I wish this was on screen- I definitely would watch it again and again. This is a book I wish I could read for the first time all over again. It truly is a phenomenal and wonderful book.
I have nothing negative I can say about this book. From beginning to end, it is a delightful dark masterpiece and I will definitely be recommending it to anyone who will listen.
An absolute must for the TBR. This is a gem.
Lost Little Angels Holly S. Roberts is the second book in the new Detective Eve Bennet series and it was excellent from start to finish. With so many twists and turns this is a book that was hard to put down especially if you start reading it when you are just bout to go to sleep.
She wakes suddenly, realising with a panic that her darling baby daughter should have woken long before now. Racing to the pink-coloured nursery, she lets out a deep cry as she opens the door. The crib is empty. Her little girl has vanished.
It’s after midnight when Detective Eve Bennet receives a distraught phone call from an unknown number. The voice at the other end begs her not to hang up—a baby has gone missing. But what the caller says next makes Eve’s heart race. “She isn’t the first. There are many, many more.”
Rushing to the missing girl’s home, Eve finds the house empty, and when she knocks on their neighbours’ doors, not a single person answers. Whoever reported the missing baby doesn’t want to be found…
Secrets are held tight in the small town of Hilldale and as an outsider, Eve knows that the only way to uncover the truth is to persuade someone to talk. She finally has a breakthrough when a young wife goes against her husband’s wishes and tells Eve it’s not just babies being taken—mothers are disappearing too.
The woman leaves Eve a hand drawn map leading her to an isolated trailer park. What she finds there shocks her to her core. But she hardly has time to think before she notices a lone figure watching her every move. She’s not alone.
Can Eve save herself in time to finally unmask the truth before more innocent children disappear forever?
I highly recommend this book and nother 5 star read.
Big thank you to NetGalley & Bookouture for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review
Another fabulous book by Holly, it has a storyline and Detective Bennett is a believable character and I look forward to reading more about her
This book had me instantly hooked. It is a dark storyline but I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know where the missing mothers and their children were ending up. The investigation into the missing mothers is made more complicated because no one is allowed to talk to the police. There are so many terrible characters that the suspect list keeps you guessing. The ending is a tough read and you really feel the fear of the characters because it is written so well. I think I held my breath for a good few chapters because I had no idea how they were going to get out of their predicament.
You don’t need to have read book 1 but it does help explain the issues between Eve and her family. Eve is such a badass character and this book shows her mental strength. Her team are amazing and I love getting to know them all more. I hope we get to see more of them.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
If you ever wondered how women can find themselves in impossible situations, then this book might just be an eye-opener.
Caught up in a cult off shoot of Mormons, many women are treated like possessions with no opinions or desires met. They are a means to an end for the "men" of the cult. Meant only for breeding and taking care of the men and the children, these women are less than slaves and treated horrifically. When they do try to resist, the consequences for them and their children is dire.
But for one woman who could not accept this situation, many others of her status were saved and given a voice.
Detective Eve Bennet will not rest until she finds out the truth about what is happening in this remote wilderness that is home to a great number of "cult" members and their families.
The findings are not pretty, but this story needs telling too!
While this book is a work of fiction, it has it roots in reality and that reality is frightening.
A must read for everyone!
I was given an ARC copy of this book for my honest review.
TRIGGER WARNING: misogyny and violence against women including sexual assault
Detective Eve Bennet is called to a polygamous community to investigate a missing newborn and mother. She herself is an apostate from the religious community and shunned while she tries to investigate. Can she defy her own family to locate the mother and child?
Lost Little Angels is the second book to feature detective Eve Bennet but I have not read the first in the series, Only Girl Alive. There are spoilers about events and outcomes from the first book so I would advise reading them in order.
Eve is tenacious and determined. She is also kind and caring. She knows what the community is like and fears for the safety of the women and children at the hands of their husbands and fathers. There is a personal side to the plot as she is targeted by the male members of her family. I really liked the strength of her character and her sense of justice as she tries to rescue women and challenge the dogma of the religious community.
The plot is quite gripping but the latter part of the plot is deeply unpleasant (I can't give further details without huge spoilers!) I also felt very uncomfortable about the portrayal of the fundamentalist religion although this was contrasted by the positive portrayal of the non derogatory polygamous marriages of a fellow officer. The ending is certainly dramatic and I would read like to read future books in this series as well as catch upon the first.
Lost Little Angels is a tense book with a gripping plotline and strong female lead character.
By now you should know I am a sucker for a good crime series. This is the second in the Eve Bennet series and it stands out a little from the other ones I’ve read as Eve’s cases, at least in these books, are in a Mormon community. Multiple wives, their owns laws, not a fan of outside policing. And what ups the story a little more is that Eve was once a part of that community and is related to some that are still part of it. So you get a detective solving a case, but you also get Eve’s history there and her inner dialogue at having escaped it. I am not terribly familiar with the Mormon community, but this might be an extra strict side sect. I don’t know but it reminds me a little of the Amish and their own views of the world.
And so far in these two books, there is a child at the center. In this one a child and then the mother have gone missing. The stakes are high as Eve and her team try to find them before something bad can happen to them as there is history and even more rumors of that happening there. And the town fights her and her team every step of the way. I like Eve’s team. Especially Clyde. I love Eve’s relationship with Clyde and how she is learning how to trust and shed her past as she works the case. She still has a tendency to be a little bit of a lone wolf but is working on that.
It’s an all around solid start to the series. A unique twist on the age old detective solving crimes. If you are a fan of this genre, you should check this one out. It has the comfort you’re used to but with a slight twist.
This was my first read of 2023 and having enjoyed the first instalment in this series so much I was excited to see book two in the offerings and had high hopes which to my delight were not dashed.
Eve and the team are back to investigate the disappearance of new born babies and their mothers within a fundamentalist community that she herself escaped.
This was a harrowing, disturbing, troubling read that delves into the deadly underworld that exists within a closed community. (To think that a community like this can actually exist in the real world is mind blowing,)
I was just blown away with this book I can't praise it enough and eagerly await book three!
Detective Eve Bennet’s newest case is that of a missing baby. But, it is far more than that. This case really hits close to home for Eve, bringing her back in contact with a fundamentalist group that has ties with her disturbing past. As unpleasant as it is, Eve must deal with her evil stepbrother Aaron, and she definitely meets with roadblocks as she delves deeper into the case of the missing baby.
Eve’s mother had escaped the polygamist group when she was a child and now she and her team have to delve deeply if they are to find out what happened to the missing baby. Getting people to talk is not easy. But Eve soldiers on. Although reminded of the dangers she faced in a previous investigation, including the involvement of her own family members, Eve never gives up.
With tension set high right from the very start, this second book in the Eve Bennet story is just as good as the first, Only Girl Alive. Now I am more than eager to see what Eve will face next, and what will happen with her stepbrother Aaron.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Lost Little Angels by Holly S. Roberts
Detective Eve Bennet #2
Truth can be stranger than fiction…or so Mark Twain’s character said…as I read this book, I hoped that what I was reading was not true only to find out later that this tale is based in fact and that true life is just as heinous, if not more so, than what took place in this book.
What I liked:
* Eve: strong, intelligent, raised in the FLDS religious cult-escaped, survivor, haunted by her past, supported and supportive of her team, falling for Clyde, has a tough time in this book
* Clyde: ex-sniper, seasoned homicide detective, strong, intelligent, quiet, divorced, patient, wise, excellent at his job, there for Eve at work and outside, hopes for a future with Eve
* Collin, Ray, Bina, and Tamm: the rest of Eve’s team chosen for their skills, personalities, backgrounds, and what they bring as individuals to make the team strong
* That I was drawn in from page one and compelled to read to the bitter end – I cared about the characters and how the case would be resolved
* Seeing the cult through Eve’s memories and experiences as she applied it to the solving of the case
* The group dynamics and continued character development of the team
* Being able to “hate” the bad guys
* That it made me think, care, and google to find out more
* Knowing that there will be another book to look forward in the series
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that what I read may be just the tip of the FLDS iceberg and that such cults continue to exist with horrible things happening with almost no way out
Did I enjoy this book? Yes – though not always easy to read
Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
This is a different setting for a crime thriller series you'll find,
With fundamentalist Mormon's, polygamy and patriarchs who're worse than unkind.
The community hierarchy don't want the police there
Saying that for their own they'll "care".
Detective Eve Bennet grew up in this community as a child
But her leaving left many angry and wild.
They don't want to help as she tries to solve cases
Wishing she'd leave and go to other places.
This time a mother calls, distraught at her baby's disappearance
Eve and her team are on the case at the first chance.
However, the community are keeping secrets once more
And just want to show Eve and her team the door.
There's murder, mystery, kidnapping and danger,
The death of a loved one and disappearances that are stranger.
What's happening to the Mum's and their children now
Can Eve and the team discover and rescue them somehow?
Another page turner, a fascinating read
If you enjoy crime thrillers, this is one you need!
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and Holly s. Robert for the opportunity to read an advance copy of LITTLE LOST ANGELS (Detective Eve Bennet Book 2), published 19 July 2023. This novel, which worked well as a standalone, was about the children who go missing in a Mormon community in Utah because they are known as children of sin because of the way they are conceived. This novel was difficult to read because of the nature of it. 4/5 Stars. #NetGalley. #Bookouture #HollySRobert. #LittleLostAngels
When Detective Eve Bennet gets a phone call from a hysterical woman saying that her new born baby has been snatched, and what's more her baby isn't the only one. This means that Eve will have to go back to the place she never wanted to see again- Hillsdale. A community entirely ruled by men, with their multiple wives & children, slavishly following The Prophet- even though he has been imprisoned for multiple crimes! Along with her crack multi-talented team they set off to uncover the truth but they know that help & co-operation from the community will not be forthcoming- just the opposite in fact.
First of all I have to confess to having chosen this book thinking it was about someone else! However in spite of the setting being something that was alien to me, it didn't get long for me to be drawn into the story & the characters. It was a fast paced & often disturbing read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book. I'll be deliberately looking out for the next one.
So good! I couldn’t put this harrowing & disturbing story down. #DetectiveEveBennet is back in the 2nd book of her series, back in the disturbing place she grew up to investigate another crime. Just as intriguing as the last, if not better! #HollySRoberts is into something with this series!
Thank you, Holly Roberts, Bookouture, & netgalley for my copy! All opinions are my own.
Just after midnight Detective Eve Bennett receives a call from an unknown number. It is a distraught woman claiming her baby is missing and that there are many others who have also vanished. Eve rushes to the caller’s home only to find it empty and the neighbours unwilling to answer the door. No one is willing to talk in Hilldale. The town is home to a polygamist sect and secrets run rife, as does their distrust of outsiders. Eve and her team have to convince someone to talk if they are to find the baby or her mother. And what she eventually uncovers is worse than anything she imagined…
The second book in the Detective Eve Bennett series takes us back inside the twisted world of a fundamentalist cult and the battles Eve and her team face trying to help their innocent victims. But don’t worry if you’ve not read the first book, because Holly S. Roberts catches you up succinctly, making it possible to read this one while still feeling like you understand all the nuances of the story and character relationships. It is well written and gripping, taking you through a wide range of emotions and keeping you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end as she expertly weaves heartbreak, anger, frustration, laughter, disgust and strength into the narrative.
Eve Bennett is a fantastic protagonist, and I stand by my comments from my review of book one where I referred to her as ‘a new star in crime fiction.’ Feisty and tenacious; she is passionate about giving a voice to the voiceless and helping people escape the cult. It is personal for her, as she escaped the cult as a teen and is still coming to terms with the long-term trauma of being raised there. It was great to see her slowly allowing love into her life in this book and watching her continue to grow as a person. Her team is also made up of fascinating characters and I love their dynamic. It makes you believe in them and root for them to solve the case despite the many obstacles in their way. There are also some brilliantly written villains in the book who will make you rage and your stomach turn, Roberts expertly walking that fine line by making you feel those feelings while also helping you understand the indoctrination they’ve been subjected to and also never using it to excuse their actions, making it clear they should still be held accountable. We also see some incredibly brave characters who risk their lives either by helping Eve or reaching out for help themselves. It is a reminder of just how dangerous these extremist views can be and the risk to those caught up in them.
Gritty, chilling, twisty and tense, this heart-pounding thriller is a must read for fans of the genre. Now I just have to wait impatiently for book three.
