3.5 stars rounded down. I love Rachel Abbott's books but unfortunately this one was not a favorite. It was so slow in the beginning and there were too many unnecessary flashbacks in my opinion. The last third or so was much better and there were some unexpected twists. I think this book would be a lot better if there was less filler in the beginning, and the pace was a little faster. I'm sorry that this one didn't quite work for me, but Rachel Abbott is still one of my favorite authors and I can't wait for her next book.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
I tried to use the Post Review to Goodreads button, but it said the ISBN was not found. I will post it there myself though.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the chance to read this ARC book. I enjoyed reading about how DS Stephanie King an DCI Gus Brodie were doing and can't wait for a resolution to their ongoing relationship. The story was too long and repetitious and there were too many time jumps so I was having to backtrack several times. Nancy's character was too naive for a 30 year old woman. I didn't think this was as much a thriller as a solid mystery. Who was the skeleton in the cave? Where was Lola some 11 years after her disappearance?? It all came together in an intense situation, and I thought the twists were somewhat predictable. I liked the book but not as much as the other books Rachel Abbott has written.
Thank you to the publisher for the arc.
I didn’t really enjoy this. It didn’t really stand out to me from the other thrillers that I’ve read with a similar plot, and it dragged.
Thank you to Net Galley and Bookouture for an ARC of this amazing book by Rachel Abbott in exchange for my honest review.
This is book three in the Stephanie King series. And just like the first two books, I enjoyed reading this one.
Nancy has come back to her aunt’s cottage, where eleven years earlier her younger sister Lola had vanished. A body is found near the cliffs, could it be her sister? Someone is watching Nancy, does it have to do with Lola’s disappearance?
With plot twists that kept me up late as I raced to turn the pages, this is a must read book for the summer.
I felt that the characters were created with depth in this well-crafted thriller.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and Rachel Abbott for the opportunity to read an advance copy of DON’T LOOK AWAY (A Stephanie King Thriller, Book 3) to be published 3 August 2023. Despite this being Book 3 of a series, it worked well as a stand alone. This Stephanie King police procedural was also a psychological thriller that kept things moving right from the Prologue and continued with multiple twists and turns until the surprise finale. 5/5 Stars #NetGalley #Bookouture #RachelAbbott. #Don’tLookAway(AStepanieKingThriller)
What exactly happened to Lola? The slow, simmering intrigue had me flying through the short chapters. Lots of pieces of the puzzle to ponder. I liked it. I look forward to reading more in the Stephanie King series.
Thank You to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Rachel Abbott for the opportunity to enjoy this ARC.
Thank you to @NetGalley and @Bookouture for the ARC of Rachel Abbott's new Stephanie King novel, Don't Look Away. While each of the books in this series can be read alone, we are learning more and more about Stephanie and Gus and her insecurities and struggles and their growth as a couple and the reader becomes more attached and wants to follow them!
At age 16 Nancy Holland's mother has a stroke and falls quite ill and Nancy must now be her caregiver. Approximately two years later, her mother dies, her sister, Lola, goes missing and her father Ray, has an automobile accident and dies tragically leaving Nancy alone. She is haunted by guilt and tragedy and wondering whether or not she is responsible for all of it.
Don't Look Away follows Nancy back to Cornwall to go to the cottage that is left to her by her Aunt. With each page Nancy seems to be unable to let go of her missing sister and the tragedy that follows her. Nancy is unwilling to believe that Lola is dead and desperately wants to find her sister. However, along her quest, she finds WAY more secrets than she was expecting! It really makes the reader wonder how much are the people around you hiding? to protect you? to protect themselves? to protect their children? This books has innumerable twists and turns that will leave you hanging on until the last page.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
At first I felt overwhelmed with all the new characters being introduced but I pushed through and this actually was an amazing read with a great twist. This was my first book read from this author but it won’t be my last. Highly recommend! #DontLookAway #NetGalley
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
If I want to guarantee a 5 star read I go directly to Rachel Abbott.
My well nurtured obsession began when I discovered No More Lies and So It Begins , many moons ago. I fed this obsession along the way The Shape of Lies and The Sixth Window.
And then I got my greedy little paws on Don’t Look Away, and my life has never been the same.
Shook..
That was one heck of a twist!!!!
Is that what the kids are saying these days? That’s exactly how I am feeling. How is it even possible that each book blows my mind but the one to follow is even better !
If you haven’t read a Rachel Abbott, book I actually envy you, you have so many incredible books that you will be able to enjoy for the first time .
Teaser :
When I open my eyes, I see my sister’s pillows are still plump on the bed next to mine, her striped blanket still straight. With cold trickling down my spine, I jump up and open the closet. Her clothes are gone…
Eleven years ago, my sister Lola vanished from my aunt’s cottage. Now I’m back for the first time, still trying to understand why she ran away. As I go through the house, my mind fills with memories. I should have taken better care of her. If I had, she might have trusted me.
What did I miss that summer? What secrets was she keeping?
I pore over the photos I took, searching for answers. Lola was so angry, so secretive—laughing with her new friends on the beach, but refusing to meet my eyes.
Then a body is discovered hidden in a cave below the cliffs where I walked that summer. No one knows how long it’s been there, and I am forced to ask: did Lola run away at all?
The police won’t tell me anything. Then I come home to find my front door open, my bed made, my camera missing. Who is watching me?
I won’t stop until I know what happened, but am I ready to face the truth about my family?
And if I learn what happened to Lola, will I be in danger too?
As a Rachel Abbott fan she has again wrote another great book! This has many twists, lies and kept me interested throughout!
Thanks again Net Galley for allowing me to read this book!
I was so excited to receive an early copy of Don’t Look Away. I absolutely love all of the Stephanie King books by Rachel Abbot. This book was gripping right away. The little teasers into Nancy’s past kept me wanting more and not wanting to put the book down.
The story starts off with Nancy returning to the place she last saw her sister, Lola, before she disappeared. For years Nancy believed Lola ran away and always wondered why and blamed herself. Quickly we learn there’s much more to the story and that Lola may not have left by choice.
The twists and turns in this book had me guessing and engaged the whole time. Sometimes I was partly right, other times I was far off base. I highly recommend this thrilling mystery (along with the rest of the Stephanie King series). I’m hoping for another Stephanie King thriller soon!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of Don’t Look Away by Rachel Abbot. I don’t know why I haven't read a book by this author before, but I will be looking for more soon. I loved this book because while there was so much going on and it was a long book, it was a fast and easy read. If you love a lot of twists, this is the book for you because there are a ton of surprises in this story. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Wow! My first Rachel Abbott book but won’t be my last! This was well told over multiple timelines. Great character development all the way around. Lots of secrets, lies and family ties. Totally enjoyed this one and it kept me up way past my bedtime!
Highly recommend
Thank you Rachel Abbott, NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this book
I love Rachel Abbot and she has done it again with this fabulous book!
~This book was given by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
This book deserves more hype then it got. The dysfunctional family and missing child reminds me of so many true crime stories, It was so fast paced but kept my attention. I liked the twists but it wasn't convuluted with lots of characters and dual timelines and POV so it made for a smooth read. I want to read every book by this author now.
I LOVED this book! It was a very fast pace read with spectacular twists. Rachel is very talented her writing the way she grips you since the first page. Don’t look away is a thriller but Abbott has you feeling all kinds of emotions, sadness, empathy, love, anger. The character growth between Nancy the way she grew up taking responsibility of her mom and when her mom passed she felt quilt from her blaming herself to her understanding she did all she could.
Thank you NetGalley and bookouture for this arc in echange for a honest review. My bookstagram is @blueeyesandbooks
This talented author has written a cannot put down mystery. Realistic characters keep the story moving. Intrigue, along with red herrings, keep the reader guessing. This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher and the gifted author. Stephanie King is an innovative protagonist. She and her friends make this a novel that reads like nonfiction at times.
This is the first book written by Rachel Abbots that’s I’ve read. It’s starts out a little slow that may be because it’s apparently from a series and I haven’t read the other two books. I loved the setting of this book it’s in Cornwall. At near the halfway point I found myself very invested in finishing the book today. Needless to say I spent a large portion of my day reading. So be warned don’t start this book if you need to clean house and make dinner.
