A fun, straightforward thriller, delivering action and tension at a good clip. Some of the connections and conclusions drawn by characters required a little suspension of disbelief, and the most significant plot twist was too obvious, too early, for maximum twisty enjoyment, but it was still an entertaining, fast read.
Thank you to Sourcebooks Fire for the advance review copy!
Thanks to Sourcebooks Fire and NetGalley for this ARC. Although this is an YA mystery, I devoured it in one day. Recommend
If you’re looking for a grab-you-by-the-hair kind of opener, that keeps you flipping pages with its alternating POV’s and twisted little turns, then this one’s for you…!
Thank you Sourcebooks Fire and NetGalley for this arc!
3.5/5★
A teenage girl is found bloody on the side of the road with no memories. When a man shows up claiming to be her dad, complete with documentation, no one questions whether or not he is telling the truth. However, "Mary" starts to question it when some things don't add up as she spends time with this man. Meanwhile, Drew, in another town, is believed to have murdered his girlfriend. Knowing he is innocent, he sets out to find her to prove his innocence.
I thought this one was decent. It was really easy to read, and there was a decent twist at the end. However, I do think it took too long to get to any sort of twist because I thought it was just going to be the predictable outcome as the twist. I think if the Drew investigation had started earlier rather than his first few chapters being about him being the pariah, it might have increased the suspense some.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
4.0 stars.
Thank you to SourceBooks Fire publishing and Netgalley for providing me with this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
With the amount of crime/thriller content I consume I was able to predict the plot twist pretty easily. With that being said, I still enjoyed the journey and had grown to root for both main characters which isn’t always easy to do. I also loved the descriptions of the surroundings and what exactly the main characters felt. It really helped to place me in the story.
There’s some obvious notions about how teens were able to solve / break into the police station to steal information, but I easily chalk that up to it being YA.
It’s definitely a fun, easy mystery to read that I would recommend!
“I think I might be dead.” Here are reasons to read the Young Adult Thriller book:
2 POV - In this book we follow Drew and “Mary”, each with their own journey of realization. Mary has amnesia after an accident.
Guilt - Drew feels extreme guilt after his girlfriend Lola left his car and then disappeared
Remembering - and while Mary is found by her supposed father, is she really who he says she is?
This book was very fast paced, especially as we follow Drew in his quest to find Lola. Everyone thinks he did something to her, so he has a lot to prove. But in the Mary storyline, it’s really tense because you know that what she is being told is extremely sketch. And the last few chapters of this book are SO crazy and suspenseful. This is a solid YA Thriller if that is up your alley.
This one was a great, quick YA read! I love me a YA mystery!! I don't want to spoil it, so won't say much, but oof! That twist!!!
ahhh I flew through this book!! I'll come back to type this review. I'll leave this for now... HIGHLY recommend.
It's so hard to find books that I can read in 2 days with life, but somehow I was able to with this book!! Could you imagine waking up one day in the middle of a ditch with no idea who you are. You go to the police station, only to have your dad to come in saying he was looking for you. Although, you have no idea if this is your dad or not, but why couldn't he be since he has pictures of the two of you together... duh duh duh, now here is the beginning of it.
There's two POVs during the story, a boy (Drew) and girl (main character). It was a nice flow from one chapter to the next and the writing was so easy to follow along. I think the entire book took place over a course of a week?? so you'll just want to find out what the heck happens next. It's rare I find mysteries that I love this much and honesty I can't say I have found anything wrong with this book. It caught my attention, I was immersed into the storyline, and the characters were likeable!!
Fabulous
Even though this starts with one of my least-favorite story cliches. amnesia, this book caught my attention right from the start and kept it right through the end of this very fast read.
There are two parallel stories. One has a deputy sheriff finding a bruised and bloody teenaged girl on a remote mountain road. The injuries prove to be mild, but she doesn't know who she is or how she got there. When Wayne Boone, claiming to be her father, shows up the next day with pictures and documents showing that she is his daughter Mary, the deputy releases her to him.
Drew is the main suspect of the disappearance of his girlfriend, Lola. Although Drew knows he did not harm her, he feels his actions the night she went missing makes him guilty. When the town sheriff seems to stop looking for Lola, Drew, his best friend, Max, and Lola's best friend Autumn (who happens to be the sheriff's daughter), use police department evidence to look for her.
The only part that didn't seem plausible to me was Wayne going to the sheriff's office. Also, if you have ever read the news, don't trust anyone named Wayne.
For the sensitive, squeaminsh or easily triggered, this book did not have any sex or rape scenes but some violence, including the fleeting description of a decaying body.
I appreciated that Drew had two dads. It wasn't a central part of the story. It did not cause anyone angst. It just was a fact just like another character's mom had died. I think normalization of different family dynamics goes a long way toward acceptance. Of course, that means this book won't be available in some Florida libraries until the laws become more humane. Crazy.
All in all a great read that I devoured in one day. In Florida.
When Drew's girlfriend Lola disappeared the whole town thought he was responsible because he was the last one to see her that night at the river. Drew's best friend is the only one who believes him until Lola's best friend has doubts so they decide to find her. In the meantime a girl has an accident late at night and can't remember her name. She is rescued by someone who has proof he is her father, but something does not seem right to her. Before things come to an end all the teens are in danger. I will purchase this for my high school library. I received this as an arc from NetGalley and under no promise for a positive review.
This was an anxiety inducing roller coaster that I read faster than I thought was possible.
A teenage girl is found on the side of the road badly injured, with a concussion, and memory loss. She refuses to go to the hospital and while she’s in the police station trying to figure out who she is, in walks a man claiming to be her father showing paperwork to prove who she is.
A few hours away in another town Drew is mourning the disappearance of his girlfriend Lola, and not only is he devastated - but he’s also the only suspect as he was the last one to see her. Drew is desperate to find Lola and prove his innocence.
This was SO GOOD. My heart was pounding for so much of this book and it was genuinely scary to me. This is told in two POVs, the teenage girl and Drew. For a YA thriller this knocked it out of the park. I did not see the ending coming and I actually gasped.
If you want a fast paced + creepy thriller that’ll give you similar vibes to A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder and will give you actual chills, read this one!
Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks fire for this ARC. This comes out on January 2, 2024 (or December 26, 2023? Goodreads says something different lol)
This is hands down probably the best YA Thriller I have read!
This book grips you from the very first page, where we meet a teenager who is found on the side of the road and has no idea who she is or how she gets there, the police find her and then someone comes to the police station and claims to be her father proving so. But in a town not too far away we also meet Drew, the boyfriend of Lola, who has been missing and Drew is the prime suspect... because it's always the boyfriend right?
We get POV's from both the injured teenager and Drew . The injured teenager is trying to figure out who she is & Drew is trying to prove he's innocent.
This is a jam packed thriller that makes you not want to stop reading, I read this in 2 sittings, but definitely could have read it in one go... it's that good!
There's lots of questionable things that go on, and a lot of trying to figure out what is really going on which makes this a great thriller, and probably one of my new favorites!
I highly recommend this one if you are looking for a binge read & something you can dive into very quickly!
This was another great YA book I recently read! I read this book in one sitting, it was a captivating and sad story but I just could not stop reading it. I found myself rooting for the characters at the same time I wanted to yell at them for being dumb teenagers haha. I did cry at one point (when you get there you will know) and I think this book was really well done. You can find this one on December 26,2023! I would recommend it but just know it is not happy and uplifting! Overall I give it 4/5 stars!
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for a copy of this work in exchange for my honest review!
When a girl wakes up in a ditch she cannot remember who she is she is found by one of the nicest policeman who takes her to the station after she refuses medical treatment does his best to find out if she’s a missing person in the county. Soon after a man shows up claiming he is looking for his daughter Mary Boone they were on their way to their fishing cabin and she was supposed to meet him there in her vehicle and she never showed up and he goes on to describe the anonymous teen to a T when he sees her he says yes that is definitely her but the police does his due diligence and follows them back to the cabin looks like the pictures he has and her birth certificate and Social Security card to the nice officer and the teen it seems the case is solved she thinks she is Mary and that this is her father in the second POV we meet drew a senior at the local high school in Washington county Washington and the prime suspect of his missing girlfriends demise. He has been dating Lily Elizabeth Scott for over two years and desperately wants her back he spends all his free time putting up missing posters and the local sheriff spends all his time bringing Drew in for questioning without an adult. Soon “merry“ starts remembering things that don’t jive with what the nice man claiming to be her dad says but it will be a chance siding that brings these two POV‘s together this is a YA thriller but I want to say this book reads like an adult thriller with twist turns and surprises. I love Megan Lally‘s books and I feel with this one she really is showing why so many people love her books even though you know there’s going to be a surprise Megan always makes you do a double take and that is why I am absolutely gaga over her books. I always think the last one I’ve read is my favorite but this one is actually really really awesome and I loved it and definitely recommend it! I want to thank SourceOfBooksFire and net galley for my free art copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
An exciting thriller that gripped me from the first page! I couldn't guess where it was going and I enjoyed the ride!
This was a debut suspense thriller set in the PNW (!) and alternating between two POVs: a girl with amnesia and a boy called Drew. It was incredibly propulsive and engrossing. The structure really worked for me, and the misdirect/twist was a total surprise. The ending made me cry, which is not a thing I can say about this genre often. The pace and plotting were strong, and I'm excited to see what we get in the future from Megan Lally.
This book had me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the very last! Megan has written a gripping, gut-wrenching debut that you won’t be able to put down!
Thank you to NetGalley, Sourcebooks Fire, and Megan Lally for an ARC of this book.
I enjoyed That’s Not My Name. The beginning did a great job of laying the groundwork for the whole story. Overall, the story was filled with many twists, and the dual point of view gave the reader a full circle view of everything.
This book was a gripping read from the first page, with plenty of tense moments and a plot that has the reader second-guessing everything they are being told.
The book utilise dual narrators, following amnesiac Mary who feels unsure about the father she has been reunited with and prime-murder-suspect Drew who is seeking answers to clear his name in the disappearance of his girlfriend Lola.
This narrative drives the plot and introduces the reader to various clues to piece together the full picture and a couple of red-herrings along the way - all of which leading to the satisfying twist ending (and even if you are like me and guess the twist early on, reading to the conclusion is still an enjoyable experience as you will quickly get invested within the story and grow attached to the characters).
If I'm being really picky certain references, such as an early mention of Lizzo being good music taste, will likely date the book in the future (I'm thinking of the current controversy and how this might impact perceptions) however popular culture references can really help solidify some realism.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story and it's a really strong debut for Megan Lally, I look forward to seeing what she writes next!
It's been a long time since I read a book in a single day because I couldn't put it down. That's Not My Name was quick, fast-paced, and engrossing, and I couldn't put my Kindle down long enough to take a break from reading it. I don't know what it is about YA thrillers that pull me in like that, and this one was no different. It was short enough that the pacing wasn't all over the place, but long enough that it felt like the story wrapped up.
That's Not My Name tells the story of a girl who wakes up in a ditch one day with no memory of who she is. A man claiming to be her father picks her up from the police station and she goes back to her life with him, except not everything is adding up. At the same time, Drew is a high school boy whose girlfriend has gone missing, and he's determined to find her.
The girl in the ditch is told her name is Mary, and I definitely liked Mary's story a lot better than Drew's. I found that Drew and his friend Autumn, the sheriff's daughter, sometimes took things too far, and I was getting whiplash about whether or not they liked each other. Autumn went from writing "Murderer" on Drew's locker to trusting him entirely in one single conversation, and that felt very rushed to me. I also didn't love the storyline of the teenagers investigating, because it felt really unrealistic. Max was such an extraneous character, and it seems like his only purpose was to have a car to transport the rest of them around.
The twist was a bit predictable, but I'm glad it went down that route instead of a different one, I think any other ending would have been even more unbelievable. The writing was easy to follow, although a bit simplistic at points, and like I mentioned, I couldn't put this one down. This was truly a spectacular debut, and I'll definitely be picking up more by this author.
