Well, what can I say about Gerri Hill? She’s up there with Katherine V Forrest, Karin Kallmaker, and Radclyffe as lesfic icons. I love the Hunter series. I’ve followed the growth of all the characters and the creation of Tori’s little family and I really hope this isn’t the end :-( It would be possible to read this as a stand alone but I wouldn’t recommend it as there are loads of throw backs to things in other stories. Plus why would you want to miss out on Tori and Sam going through a tunnel and bonding in Book 1…
The story here opens swiftly with Tori and Casey attending a murder which has elements of an execution. The deceased has a huge room full of photographs of Tori - from her childhood through to very recently. From there we are in the thick of an investigation into the murder of Tori’s family when she was 12. Sam and Casey - and Malone - try to keep Tori on the right side of the law but Tori knows that she will have to cross some ethical lines to solve a case that’s over 30 years old.
There are all the things we expect from Ms Hill. Tight plotting, discreet clue dropping, and beautifully drawn relationships. There’s a lot of angst and guilt as the bodies pile up but Hunter knows she has to see this through - no matter what the outcome. The ending is satisfying and not quite what is expected and yet it makes sense. I do hope we get more of Hunter and her little family but if not, this is a nice finish.
I was given a copy of the book by NetGalley
I am a huge fan of Gerri Hill and this book did not disappoint. You don't have to read the previous 4 books in the Hunter series to enjoy this book, but I highly recommend it as they build on each other. In this book we finally find out who killed Tori's family. Something fans of the Hunter series have wondered for 18 years. As always, Hill does a fantastic job of weaving the reader through a multi-layered path into a beautiful meadow of a perfectly told story.
Hunter's Way was one of the first sapphic books I read, and Tori Hunter has lived in my heart ever since. This final book gives us and Tori the closure we deserve. Tori and her best friend and partner Casey find pictures of Hunter covering the walls of a murder victim they are called to investigate. The man's neighbor gives Hunter a letter from the dead man revealing information about her family's murder.
This brings all of those memories to the surface and we catch a glimpe of the Hunter we met in the first book, although this version has the love of her wife Sam and her friends to keep her from being lost in the darkness she spent so many years in. I was thoroughly entertained by this book. Tori is like an old friend, one I would probably be a little scared of, but also have a massive crush on. I was super excited when I saw that Gerri Hill was releasing this book and it did not disappoint.

This story is the fifth book in the Hunter series and gives us closure to Tori Hunter’s past. Her family was murdered in front of her as a child. She suffered traumatically from this for her lifetime until she meets Sam and begins living again.
This is a murder mystery and police procedural that starts with Tori and her partner being called to a murder of an elderly man. In this man’s house are hundreds of pictures of Tori from the time of her family’s murder to present day. In interviewing the neighbor Tori is given a letter with details about her family’s murder.
Tori is enraged over this letter and starts investigating the cold case on her own. Sam and Casey are very concerned about Tori and secretly follow her to keep her safe.
The first part of the book was good and kept me interested in it. Midway it got complicated and repetitive. I would have liked to have more emotional interaction between Tori and Sam. I was happy to get to the conclusion of Tori’s past. And I think Hill’s fans will also be happy to read this final chapter.
ARC received from NetGalley for an honest and voluntary review.
This was sorta back to what the original 2 Tori Hunter books. (Partners and Angel Fire just didn't feel the same).
In this one Tori and Casey cone come to a murder scene that may have something to do with Tori's family's deaths. She stays on it for a little, but, soon she feels the need to do it her way, giving Malone hellish heartburn.
The mystery was pretty good. There were a lot of characters that were new, and, so, there were many ways it could have ended too. As I said, it was sorta like coming home in this (maybe? heh heh) final Hunter mystery. It felt very much like the first novel especially. The focus on the big 3 characters of this series (oops, sorry Leslie), and, a mystery that was both personal, but, also bigger than just them.
Hunter’s Revenge by Gerri Hill is a novel I’ve been waiting years for. I’ve wanted to read this ever since I read Hunter’s Way, the first book in the ‘Tori Hunter’ series.
In Hunter’s Way we learn how Tori’s family was brutally murdered in front of her when she was twelve years old. The murders were never solved since there was no evidence left at the scene. The only witness (Tori) was so traumatized she was never able to give a good description of the murderer even though she looked directly in his face as he put the gun up against her head just before he walked out the door without shooting her.
Now after thirty plus years, possible evidence suddenly appears that may be connected to these murders when Tori is sent to the house of an elderly man who was killed in his home. One wall in the house is covered with pictures of Tori from the time right after her family’s murders up until just a few weeks before the man died. A gun is also found in a safe that turns out to be the Hunter family murder weapon. Tori may be close to finally bringing justice to her family, but it’s not going to be easy.
Hunter’s Revenge is filled with mystery and intrigue as Tori, with the help of her wife Sam and her best friend Casey O’Connor. There’s also danger and betrayal as Tori sifts through the load of evidence that sends her on all kinds of twists and turns.
I didn’t mark this story as a romance, but keep in mind the main characters are all already in committed and loving relationships. You will find plenty of love in these pages even though this book is mostly a murder mystery.
I hate knowing this is the last Hunter book Ms. Hill plans to write, but if the series has to end, this is the perfect novel to end it with. If you’re a Hunter fan, you don’t want to miss this book.

This is the final book in the Hunter series and is written to get closure on the mystery of who murdered Tori Hunter’s entire family thirty years ago. One day Hunter arrives at the scene of the murder of a man in his home. In one of the rooms they find numerous pictures of Tori. Then the neighbor gives her an envelope of the murdered man’s confession. The information also contains clues about the murder of Tori’s family.
This story was well written, developed with care about information shared in the previous books, and kept me highly engaged until the ending. Tori of course was the main character in the story, but I also enjoyed her relationship with Sam, her wife, and Casey, her detective partner and best friend. 5 stars
I received an ARC from Bella Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Tori Hunter is detective whose family was murder thirty years ago although she happy with her wife Sam whose also is a cop she always had in back her mind why was her family killed and may get the answers. Tori and her partner and best friend Casey arrive on scene of a man who been shot what more disturbing is the pictures of Tori since she was a child all on the wall of the murder victim and more shocking is the letter he leaves behind for her that gives her clues about her family murders. Tori is in a race to learn the truth but she doesn’t want justices she wants revenge will Sam Casey and Lesley keep her going off the deep end. This was a satisfying ending to this series and I’m going to miss theses characters but I hope we get to see them in other’s stories it’s was nice shout out to character of Cameron from Devil Rock hope we get see her and Andrea again along with C.J. and Paige. I love this author and although I love her romance novels I love her mystery thrillers more and hope she continue. I so would love collaboration with Gerri and Radclyffe with theses characters with Radclyffe Justice Series they do mystery thrillers well while having a romance in it.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Tori Hunter is a detective in Dallas Texas. Her family was murdered 30 years ago and there is no clue until a man is murdered in his house. There are pictures of Tori on his wall and an envelope left for her. Tori is determined to find who ordered the kill on her family. Tori's wife, Sam and her friends want her to drop the investigation but she is stubborn and wants to find the person and explain why her family was killed. The plot was good and kept my attention. There was love, drama and tragedy in the book and the story really kept me going. I recommend this book for all readers.
This is the fifth, and final, book in Hill’s Hunter series. I guess you could read it as a stand-alone, I wouldn’t advise it. You will miss too much of the back story that is the main storyline of this book.
While I think the writing itself of this book is decent, the story choices are just a bit lacklustre. There is a lot of repetition- in scenes and sometimes even in lines. This seems a bit contradictory when I say the writing is decent, but when I talk about writing I mean I haven’t spotted typos or grammar errors, continuity issues, or just some other weird language related issues.
So, this story, it’s all about Hunter’s past and maybe, finally, finding closure. I think this book needed a little more body, for me, it falls really flat. It’s too many of the same things over and over again. These characters are lovely, but in this book… boring and too predictable.
The book has rather short chapters and while I was on chapter 17 I thought I was further along in the book, both because of the chapter number and where the story was heading. Unfortunately, I was only about half way along. You can understand how it dragged on after this. I think maybe the last 15% brought some excitement, but that’s it. And even the excitement was just a little flat. I never felt the tension you would expect with a book like this.
I was just a little disappointed with this book, it happens. 2.5 stars
In 2005, Gerri Hill released, Hunter’s Way. This book would be the first in the series about a cop who doesn’t care about her reputation as being impossible to work with. She doesn’t care that no one wants to be partnered with her. She doesn’t care about much, really, besides her job and bringing down the bad guys.
18 years later, Hill has released Hunter’s Revenge, the book to wrap up the series, and what a perfect way to do it. Firstly, this is not a stand-alone. Reading or listening to the other four books in the series is pretty much a prerequisite to getting the full experience of the world in which Tori Hunter exists. These are all terrific books, and if you’re a fan of audio, Abby Craden is the narrator of them all, adding to the overall experience.
Hunter’s revenge is where Tori finally get’s the answer to what happened to her family and who killed them.
I received an ARC from Bella Books via NetGalley for my honest review
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
tori hunter is the only one left from her immediate family... they had been murdered and it had remained a cold case for many years...
until one day she received a letter, telling her who had murdered her family but not the why or therefores
and so begin tori's hunt to find who ordered the hit on her family
but it may have more lasting repercussions than she ever thought
an interesting addictive read that kept me guessing who....
Gerri Hill returns with one of my favorite characters, Detective Tori Hunter. Hunter’s Way introduced Tori in 2005 and her then partner is now her wife Sam. When Hunter is called to a homicide she doesn’t recognize the victim but is stunned to find photos from her life covering his wall. Hunter’s back story is a mystery that hasn’t been solved. Her father was a police detective and her entire family was killed leaving her as a young eye witness.
This quickly turns into a fast paced, police procedural story. Her boss kicks her off the current homicide investigation but doesn’t object when she wants to look into her families cold case files. But when other bodies start connecting she needs to go a bit rogue to follow the investigation. She wants answers, closure and maybe revenge. But can you get that after thirty years? Of course her partner Casey O’Connor has her back and Sam continues to be a supportive and calming presence. An FBI friend also helps using computer skills to get key information.
I’ve read the previous books in this series in the last three years so the characters and relationships were fresher in my mind than if I’d been waiting for this book since 2014. Hill is a strong storyteller. She doesn’t include intimate scenes in this adventure but the connection between Sam and Tori is strongly felt through out the story.
This solves a great personal mystery from Hunter’s life but it doesn’t preclude new mysteries for any of the characters in this book. If this is the end of the road for these partners and friends, I can't think of better climax. Thank you to NetGalley and Bella Books for an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
One of Gerri Hill’s most beloved characters is back, and she’s back with a vengeance! Tori Hunter is on a mission, and she won’t be stopped. Hold on to your hats—and hearts—because Hunter’s Revenge is one never ending, wild ride of whodunnit thrills, and you are not going to want to miss it!
Tori Hunter made her first appearance in 2005 with Hunter’s Way, where she quickly captured readers’ attention. The tough-as-nails detective was an immediate hit with readers and their fascination with her hasn’t waned. In fact, Hill reports that one of her most frequently asked questions continues to be: who killed Tori’s family? In Hunter’s Revenge, readers finally get their answer but not without a few heart-stopping twists and turns. However, they are worth every sleep deprived moment!
The foundation and arc to Hunter’s Revenge is solidly constructed and well paced. Based on key points and background information from Hunter’s Way, this latest book in the series brings things to a head and ties things up nicely. If readers have been following along since the beginning, they already know that at age twelve Tori is the lone survivor of a targeted murder at her family’s home. It is here that readers begin to understand the dynamics of Hunter and Sam’s relationship too, as their partnership has more sizzle than a Fourth of July sparkler. The pair’s chemistry is nearly palpable, and that continues to drive plot developments throughout book five. Sam helps to sell Tori to the reading audience in ways only a well-written love interest can. In fact, it’s what sets this series apart, aiding to keep readers engaged from beginning to end.
It’s fortunate for readers that Hill realized early on that Tori Hunter is a rare and unique gem bursting with story potential. There’s a lot to mine out of this character; she’s a multi-dimensional, investable character with a lot of appeal. It’s also fortunate that Hill was willing to spend more time with Tori. It’s not so hard to understand Tori’s draw though. For one, she’s a strong, confident woman who doesn’t back down from a challenge. She’s also fiercely loyal to her friends and colleagues, and she’s not afraid to take risks to get the job done. However, it’s her complexity that really snares readers. She’s a vulnerable human being who struggles with her past, and it complicates life for her. Hill highlights Tori’s struggles and flaws so perfectly in book five. Readers walk away with empathy and appreciation for her convictions as well as her weaknesses. They are real, believable and on full display for the reading audience, making for some intense and consuming entertainment.
Final remarks…
Hill brings it all together for Tori in book five of this series in ways only a skilled storyteller can. Readers will no doubt appreciate the depth she brings to Hunter’s story. Hunter’s Revenge is a first-rate piece of storytelling and I guarantee Hunter fans will not be disappointed.
Strengths…
Well-written
Well-plotted
Fantastic character development
Immersive story world
Captivating, thrilling read
Nice to get another book about Tori Hunter. The murder of a man brings to light information on the murder of Tori's family when she was young. It is bit of a whodunnit. The information is gathered as the book progresses and the truth eventually comes to light about who was behind the murders. An intriguing mystery story with a bit of romance thrown in.
Hunter’s Revenge is book five in the Detective Tori Hunter series and I am so imbedded in this series I cannot say if this novel could be a standalone or not. I will happily recommend that you start with the first book just because this is an a stellar murder mystery series.
Hunter is faced with her brutal past when she is arrives at the crime scene of her next case. Finding out who murdered her family thirty odd years ago comes full circle as Tori tries to solve the biggest mystery of her life.
The much lauded and acclaimed writer Gerri Hill resumes her powerhouse series which started five years into her writing career. The perfect replication of tone and cadence of the earlier novels pulls you in from the very first sentence. You are back once again in Hunter’s life. The search for her family’s killer takes you through the darkest side of Tori’s personality and yet you never lose sight of her inherent goodness.
Eighteen years ago Hill created a character harbouring a deeply tortured soul with a steadfast sense of right and wrong. As a reader, empathizing and admiring Tori goes hand in hand. As a fan of Hill’s I could not have been more entertained reading Hunter’s Revenge.
Hunter’s Revenge is everything you could hope for in the continuation of her story.
I received an advance review copy from Bella Books through NetGalley. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
And thus ends Hunter‘s quest
Masterfully detective Tori Hunter commands our attention right from the start. She and her side-kick and best friend enter a sleepy older neighborhood. Buried and stashed away in this peaceful surroundings are the first, barely there threads of an old mystery. Threads which might unrevel a very cold case which pushes all of Hunter‘s hottest buttons.
The first few chapters set the tone for the whole novel. The succinct story-telling captivated me from the start and never falters: the short chapters are staccato style and a counterpoint to the slow poking into a cold case. The characters, the dialogue, the narrative are lean, razor sharp, focused - no unnessary embellishments and still everything is there. With a few strokes Gerri Hill conveys whole chapters of background stories. The inner struggles of Hunter are genius: how to deal with plain evil, deepest wounds and still remain on this side of good?
I have been following the Hunter series right from its start with Hunter‘s Way and think that the Hunter books are among the best stories Hill ever narrated - and that says a lot about this accomplished author who rightfully has been accumulating accolades for the past decades. I love the complex character Gerri Hill has created in Tori Hunter: The maverick detective who is good people though deeply wounded. Her slow journey and evolution. How Hunter despite her at times abrasive manner attracts the help and love of other good people and this presumably last book in the Hunter series comes full circle to close old investigations and old wounds.
If you must this book can be read as a stand-alone. For greater enjoyment take the journey of Tori Hunter starting with Hunter‘s Way, meet her wife Sam, her friends and enjoy the ride.
PS.: This conclusion to the Hunter series and the capstone to the Kate Delafield series by Katherine Forrest set last year leave me a bit bereft: Both series entertained me over many years and even decades. Kudos and many thanks for that.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC. The review is left voluntarily.
