I was excited for this book. My children love cookbooks! This book however, was very difficult to follow. The grammatical errors were a lot. The recipes were split up and sometimes there would be a fact with the recipe included in the middle.
Besides all the formatting errors. My kids were bored. The jokes were cute, not sure if my kids understood many of them though. We all wanted to see real pictures of the food. The facts of the states were too lengthy and too difficult for a child to understand, or pay attention to.
The recipes themselves would of also been nice to have how long it would take to make.
I wish I had more positive things to say. I feel like if more time was taking, this could of been a much better quality book.
Thank you Kitchen Ink Publishing and NetGalley for the electronic review copy of this fabulous book. “The goal of this book is to educate, entertain, and create delicious food for everyone to enjoy,” states the introduction, and that’s exactly what this book does. This fun book takes children on a delightful culinary adventure across the United States and its territories one recipe, fun fact, and joke at a time. I can’t recommend this book enough and would be using it with my students and grandkids.
Really fun cookbook. OMG loved the puns and jokes. So many interesting facts too! Can’t wait to try a few of these recipies!

This is a great primer for older children or young adults looking to cook with adventure. There is plenty of fun facts and stately food recipes to enjoy. But, I found some of the recipes to be cliché and and the lack of photos a detractor. I would have loved to see some unusual food recipes celebrating the unique qualities and people of each state. My thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is a fun read for those who love to travel or want to have an adventure in food vacation.
I do however wish they had photos of the different meals and foods. I understand why they didn't have any since this is a e book and advance copy so it might not be completely finished.
Thank you Netgalley for advance copy.
Recipe Road Trip is a cute, engaging and informative cookbook that takes your around the United States and it's territories. Each section is filled with recipes for the family to create together. Along the way, there are historical tidbits and jokes/riddles to share. This would be a great addition to any family kitchen.
This is a great book for a young child that enjoys cooking. It is organized by regions of the country. There is a good range of recipes with lots of pictures, riddles, and regional anecdotes.
Although created for a young cooking audience (with recipe skill levels from 1-3 included indicating potential difficulty in preparation), this bright, colorful, creative and yummy collection, “Recipe Road Trip—Cooking Your Way Across the USA,” by Nanette Lynn (and illustrated by Kate Eroshina) is one of the most unique cookbooks that I’ve discovered in recent memory.
Road Trip includes dishes and ingredients common to each of the 50 States, DC and all US Territories. It’s also jam-packed with area trivia and silly jokes that kids will love. Even I was laughing out loud at much of the ditzy humor that was scattered throughout this fantastic cookbook.
From super simple recipes like a Louisiana Mardi Gras King Cake made with refrigerated cinnamon roll dough to more complex Arkansas baked cheese grits and Massachusetts Mini Boston Cream Pies—that are actually delicious little cakes—this culinary compendium has something for everyone’s tastes and abilities. Furthermore, it’s a wonderful approach for bite sized history lessons about our extensive American culture through food and geography.
In closing, an example of one of my favorite jokes included in Road Trip, is: “Why were the pirates happy when they washed-up to shore and saw cakes, ice cream, and pie?” “Because it was a desserted island.”
JoyReaderGirl1 graciously thanks NetGalley, Author Nanette Lynn and Illustrator Kate Eroshina, as well as Kitchen Ink Publishing for this advanced reader’s copy (ARC) for review.
Recipe Road Trip is a fantastic way to integrate learning geography with fun in the kitchen. The book shares recipes from and information about all US states and territories. I can see this being a useful resource for homeschool lessons, as well as family together time in the kitchen cooking together. The information about the states is not written to be easily accessible to most children on their own, but could be shared by an adult, or the family could use this as an opportunity to find their own facts about the state they are cooking from. This would be a fun activity for grandparents and grandchildren to do as well. Lots of potential uses for this cookbook!
Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
We loved this book and recommend it. It is a favorite and top on our list. It is wonderful for families. You can take the family on a road trip, you can prepare your family for a road trip or you can go on a virtual road trip all with this book. You get so many wonderful things on these pages. You learn interesting and fun facts about the states. There is even history and geography about our 50 States. This book has it all from laughs and food to education and history. It is an engaging book with great information and delightful illustrations.
While I liked the concept of this cookbook, I wish there was actual photos of the food instead of drawings. Step-by-step photos would have also been great, especially since this is touted as a cookbook for kids. There were some recipes I have never heard of before and also no picture to go along with it, so I pretty much just have to guess at what the end result is supposed to look like. The format of this book definitely could have been better.
What a fun cookbook. My kids and I loved going through this cookbook, learning fun things about different states and trying recipes from all over the country.
How fun! Each state has 2 recipes that are specialty of that state. Though some I don’t know if I agree with the state the recipe were placed in, they are great recipes. (Main one for me was Texas being pulled pork in a slow cooker. Texas is beef country for bbq. But the recipe is solid.)
My favorite thing, besides the recipes, were the dad jokes and little factoids sprinkled throughout. It made it a fun twist on a cookbook.
Nanette Lavin takes readers on a unique journey across the Unite States, region by region with two recipe samplings and some facts for each state. The food offerings are for typical foods that have become synonymous with each state, The small trivia offerings tend to be related to food. The jokes spread throughout fall into the category of bad dad jokes but readers will get a chuckle.
The idea is a cookbook giving you recipes that take you on a culinary roadtrip of the USA. Between the number of very simple recipes (boiled peanuts? strawberry smoothies?) and oddly placed dishes (pulled pork for Texas?), it doesn’t really deliver on either count. There are a few times I was interested in what this was talking about, but I wasn’t sufficiently interested to take note. A shame.
Very cute book showing 2 recipes of each state in the USA + DC and the territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, America Samoa, US Virgin Islands and Marianas Islands), When I’m on a road trip I always check what is each State’s food so I can try it while there. Some of the recipes are spot on like FL Key Lime Pie, WV pepperoni rolls, MA lobster rolls, TN hot chicken, KT Derby pie, IL Chicago pizza and more. But I saw some main food missing like NC bbq, GA peach cobbler. I know you can’t fit all the recipes in this book since they only added two of each so I hope there’s a second one. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
This is a fun, family cookbook that not only introduces people to new recipes, but also informational tidbits about each state and US territory. There are two recipes from each place, and a regional menu plan with full meal recipes. Each recipe is labeled with difficulty levels to make family cooking time a fun and enjoyable experience.
Designed for families with a focus on easy recipes geared toward children, this unique cookbook is a holistic experience to enjoy in the kitchen and beyond! While the recipes themselves are uncomplicated and basic, the reading experience is what kicks it up a notch.
A very cool concept and a great way to get kids involved with learning more about food. A fun book to take on a road trip and try and find the food talked about in each state.
Thank you, NetGalley and Kitchen Ink Publishing. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
THINGS I LIKED
1. It was fun to read
2. The tips, facts, and jokes in almost all recipes
3. The drawings of the recipes
4. Easy to understand recipes
5 The recipes are easy to find in the book, there's even an indexing dividing the recipes unto Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
THINGS I'D HAVE ADDED
1. For all the books to have pictures or drawings, not all had them
In Conclusion, this book is an amazing one you can take with you for a trip in the US.
