Nanette Lavin’s Recipe Road Trip: Cooking Your Way Across the USA. teaches interesting facts and trivia, entertains with corny jokes sure to appeal to kids, and offers a wide assortment of recipes for parents or grandparents to help their children or grandchildren prepare at home. As the kids learn, they can experience American foods from coast to coast, from the U.S.-Mexico border to the U.S.-Canada border and beyond. As the author points out, some of the 120 recipes use crops widely grown in the region, have historical significance, and/or represent the nation’s cultural and ethnic diversity.

Packed with colorful drawings and maps and arranged by geographical regions, Lavin’s book takes us on a tasty trip through the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West, ending with Washington, D.C., and the commonwealths or territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Marianas Islands, and Guam.

The book includes a table of contents by region and state as well as a variety of alternate classifications, including possible menus for a full meal by region and a list of recipes by category (Drinks, Soups/Salads, Entrées, Sides, etc.).

Be ready to try such mouthwatering dishes as New Hampshire Corn Chowder, Philly Cheesesteak, Nashville Hot Chicken, Ozark Sloppy Joes, Denver Omelet, Slow Cooker Texas Pulled Pork, Wyoming Stew, Chimichangas, Senate Bean Soup, and Coconut Rice as well as breakfast treats or mouthwatering desserts as Breakfast Burritos, Apple Cider Doughnuts, Pecan Pie Mini Muffins, Huckleberry Pop Tarts, Avocado Toast, Empanadillas, Maple Candy, Mississippi Mud Pie, and Easy King Cake.

Thanks to NetGalley and Kitchen Ink Publishing for an advance reader copy of this handy cookbook for introducing kids to the diversity of American food.

As an author, this was useful in helping me pick authentic cuisine to places I've never actually visited.
There were a few (mostly the seafood ones) I probably wont try. But the rest I will for sure. I can easily adapt them to feed my family which grows as each of my kids gets into a relationship.
I received a copy via NetGalley and all opinions are my own.

What a fantastic idea!! This not only gets kids interested in all of the states, but it teaches them fun facts about each one and the food specialty in that state. The recipes are fairly easy and easy to follow. I think this would be a fun family book where everyone can get involved and make it a wonderful learning experience.

An interesting concept combining recipes, fun facts about the states, and dumb jokes in a book aimed at children. This great concept is marred in a couple of ways. First, the recipes are not in any order that matches the states. To find a recipe for a particular state, you must return to the Table of Contents. This limits its usefulness. Second, each recipe has a level indicating its difficulty. But the levels are just bizarre. For example, Level 2, the second easiest, contains recipes for boiling sugar, something younger children just shouldn't be around.

This was a fun virtual road trip as I read it. The recipes are interesting, some are pure classics for their state, and the tidbits of lore and history are fun. I will say some of the jokes will keep my five year old niece in stitches...so there's something for the entire family in this book!

This cookbook combines two of my favorite things, cooking and traveling. In this cookbook you are taken on a culinary adventure. Many of these recipes you may be familiar with such as you know that Florida is known for Key Lime Pie but now you have a recipe and you can pretend you are hanging out down in the Keys. Or maybe you want to try the famous Philly cheesesteak from Pennsylvania. You can relive some of your favorite vacations eats at home. They combine some of these favorites into menus from the different regions of the country. So much fun to try at home.

The concept behind this cookbook for kids is such a fun idea! The states are placed into geographic categories- Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, West, and Southwest. Each state then has two recipes in the book that are popular there. For example, crab cakes from Maryland and buckeyes from Ohio. The pages also have jokes, small trivia facts, and cute illustrations.

Some of the recipes would be easy for my 8 year old to follow, while others would definitely be too complex for her and require lots of help. The author does rate them level 1, 2, or 3 according to difficulty. I did miss actual pictures of the food, especially the foods I had never heard of before.

At the end, menus are provided by region and I can see planning a fun dinner following these menus!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kitchen Ink (what a cute publishing name!) for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Synopsis (from Netgalley, the provider of the book for me to review.)
*********************************************************
Take kids on a road trip around America without leaving your kitchen. Did you know that Baked Alaska is not from Alaska? This recipe was created in Louisiana. The first Twinkie was made in Illinois, and Virginia was the first state to grow peanuts. Explore the geography, history, and regional charm of the United States as you help children prepare different dishes with this entertaining book. Food humour sprinkled throughout the book will have you laughing out loud.

Kids can look at the map of the United States to see where a recipe comes from, compared to where they live. The recipes offer a wonderful opportunity for kids to learn cooking along with US geography. Includes more than one hundred recipes—with easy-to-find ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions. Fun food facts and jokes are sprinkled throughout the book, along with colourful, engaging illustrations to highlight state products and inventions. Informative and delicious for kids and their families!

I love this book and this type of book for they say that if you get your kids involved in the cooking they are more likely to eat what is on their dinner plate. I enjoyed all the trivia, and the humour was kid-level and the recipes are easy to make no matter the age or kitchen skills of your kids. (I adore peanuts, but I once tried boiled peanuts .... not a favourite of mine, for sure, even though they are available at every gas station in the south. I prefer Picard's Chip Nuts' White Cheddar Dill mixed with Picard's Cookie Nuts' Caramel Cookie: I am all about the salty and sweet ) Great book! #shortbutsweetreviews

What a fantastic book to use with / alongside children to teach them how to cook a huge range of simple, yet tasty, meals in the kitchen. It has very clear and simple instructions to help guide you through through each dish, with child-friendly tips along the way. The book itself is bright and vibrant, with beautiful illustrations, interesting facts and lots of jokes. There’s a massive variety of dishes in here - there’s definitely something for everyone in the family. I thoroughly enjoyed my recipe journey across the states! Would definitely recommend.

Thank you to Kitchen Ink Publishing and Netgalley for an eARC of this book to read and review.
