A magical and heartwarming romance that’s as enchanting as it is endearing. Kate Robb’s story is spellbinding from the first page.
Thanks so much to Random House and NetGalley for providing a digital review copy in exchange for my honest opinions!
I'm a year late in this one (oof) but I'm so glad I finally got around to reading This Spells Love. I've been on a real fluffy romance kick lately, and this was exactly what I craved: friends-to-lovers sweetness, adorable characters, and writing that is so easy to fall into. The whole thing felt like one of those fun AU episodes that used to happen in the CW-type fantasy shows, where you knew things were a bit wacky, but you just sit back and enjoy the ride because the journey is always entertaining. Gemma and Dax had AMAZING chemistry and banter, like, I could not put the book down once I started reading. Their scenes were everything to me. The only reason I'm docking a star for this book is because while it was cute and entertaining, it's not the most masterful piece of literature I've ever read, and there were a few occasions were the characters made some decisions that felt a little off. As a whole though, this book was SO much fun, and I can't wait to read more from this author.
Kate Robb's This Spells Love is a charming, magical romance that follows Gemma, who, after a painful breakup, accidentally casts a spell erasing all memories of her ex. What starts as a lighthearted, whimsical premise turns into a heartfelt journey of healing and self-discovery. With funny and quirky supporting characters, and a unique touch of magic, Robb delivers a refreshing take on personal growth and the realization that love—whether for someone else or yourself—can’t be fixed with a spell. A fun, engaging read for fans of contemporary romance with a twist. It is a light read for anyone needing a quick fix for romance.
Thank you, NetGalley & Penguin Publishing, for approving this ARC. I really enjoyed this book.
So I saved this book as I thought it was going to be a witchy read but aside from a spell gone wrong it's not based on witches or magic but instead it's about Gemma, who after being dumped by her boyfriend of 4 years, too much tequila, her sister and her quirky aunt find a spell book with a specific spell to make it so Gemma never met Stuart .
The only catch is that she needs to finalise the spel with a kiss, which is where her hunky BFF Dax comes in.
When she wakes up the following morning, it seems like the spell worked too well as it seems like she didn't ever meet Stuart but also didn't meet Dax.
This book reminds me of 13 going on 30 (not where she wakes up 27 years later). The fact that Gemma can remember everything and no one else can make for some really funny moments.
This book was paced really well and was a fab rom-com.
The plot, revolving around a love spell that takes unexpected turns, offers a fun premise, though some twists can feel a bit predictable. The pacing is steady, but at times, the character development could be deeper. Overall, it’s an enjoyable read for fans of lighthearted romance and magical elements, providing a cozy escape into a world where love truly enchants.
I went into this book thinking it's about witches which it kind of is. There were no witch vibes. The only part that we get anything to do with witches is at the start with the spell and the end. Can we talk about why the author thought that putting in talks about massive dicks?? That threw me off so much.
: ̗̀➛ Gemma
I found her so annoying and whiney. The way she complained about Dax so much started getting on my nerves. She kept complaining about Dax being so different from her Dax, like it's a different reality. She was literally whiny to everyone that she knew Dax even though she didn't in that universe. The way she expected everyone to drop everything and help her with her shit like, girl not everything evolves around you.
: ̗̀➛ Dax
I felt so bad for Dax for having to deal with Gemma. I would have gotten a restraining order for someone who broke into my house and wouldn't leave when told. He should've stuck with the stalker narrative!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
This book was everything I needed: witchy vibes, friends to lovers, spells and parallel universes. Until you get to the part where the author makes the main character obsessed with Dax's penis 🥲 I don't think I've ever seen a person as obsessed with a penis as Gemma. And the way she describes the spicy scenes is so cringe-worthy that it immediately brought the rating down.
Apart from the hot scenes, the book is very cute. Gemma, thanks to a spell, falls into a parallel universe in which she doesn't know her best friend, but does everything she can to get to know him again because Dax is her person. Until she realizes that she's in love with him. The story is really cute and has a lot of potential. If you ignore the cringe hot scenes, of course!
I think I'll give the author another chance because despite everything, I really liked her writing 💕
I enjoyed this book in parts but overall I was a little bit underwhelmed by it.
The first half was better than the second and the concept of the story had a lot of potential but it just didn’t hit the spot for me unfortunately.
I’m obsessed with cute witchy romances and this met all my expectations. Dad was a cute MMC as well. Would defo read more from this author
This is such a beautiful story of love, sacrifice and best friends finding each other across alternative timelines! All the characters are also relatable and loveable!
thank you netgalley for the advance reader copy! such a cute funny romcom i really enjoyed this book and i will definitely be picking other books up by this author✨
This was a humorous and funny romance with plenty to keep you entertained would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a light and easy read
I decided to give this book a go on a chance, It seemed like a good story, as I love second chance romance.
I like supernatural vibes but wasn't too sure about the cover, it's a bit too cute for those vibes and I was right.
I can't say I have read many books involving time travel and parallel universes. I don't think I'm a huge fan after reading This Spells Love.
The pacing seemed a bit off at times. Gemma's feelings change quite suddenly with her going from being friends with Dax to being obsessed with him.
I wasn't really a huge fan of the characters, Gemma was flighty, self-absorbed and annoying most of the time.
But I liked the lessons she learned in this story and I liked the way the story ended. I would have liked a little more of the end, though, to see her content with the way things worked out. And I would have liked a little more character development for Gemma, and Dax after they got together.
Thanks to Netgalley for my ARC!
Such a cute read. A great little romcom to pass the time. A fast paced easy read that I enjoyed reading. I read this in one sitting so very easy to binge read.

Thank you for my eARC of this book. I enjoyed the premise and characters of this book and bought it was an enjoyable read overall
Absolutely loved this book! Anything to do with witches and romance is an automatic win for me. The way she writes is so funny and I love the banter between the two characters.
3.5 stars
This has such a fascinating concept, and I was really loving it, but I think that perhaps the author didn't quite know how to end it?
Dax and Gemma grew on me throughout this book, and I really loved seeing them get to know each other (for Dax anyway) all over again in the new alternate reality. I also really liked the side characters of Gemma's sister Kiersten and her aunt Livi, who I think did a good job at balancing out Gemma's character and softening how self-centred she was coming across at times. I also really liked the author's writing style; it flowed nicely and I felt immersed into these characters and the world whenever I picked up the book. I just wish that the magical element to the book had been explained more? Maybe it was just that I was reading an unfinished copy, so perhaps it is different in the final version, but in what I read, there was absolutely no explanation that I could see of how this alternative universe switcheroo happened, or why we were getting all these hints towards Aunt Livi being some kind of psychic/witch and then nothing coming of it? It just made me feel a bit disappointed in the ending when Gemma just somehow returned to her old life.
Aside from wishing that the magical element had been a bit more grounded, I really liked the romance aspect of the book, and of course the concept of seeing how your life would have turned out differently based on one decision, is such an interesting topic to explore that I would love to see in more books!
Such a magical book about love. I really enjoyed reading this and loved the vibes of the book. Would read again.
