During the siege of Calais, things are starting to change. Men who’ve followed blindly, loyal to their King start to question their bloody crusade and what they’re really doing. Corruption, disaster, and death await.
Immediately this book transported me into a vivid, detailed image of 14th century France with such rich description I could feel the suns on my face and feel the breeze from the Seine river. There is palpable tension and the author starts to plant the seeds of something bigger growing within the city walls, our first major event happening just pages in. The language felt historically appropriate but not too dense, still very readable so I’d definitely be interested in continuing with this manuscript.
This sample was a bit too short to be much of substance but I enjoyed the taste of the next book! Jones created a great cast of characters here and their banter is always enjoyable.
Wow!! I was completely captivated from the beginning and couldn't put the book down and was sad I had to say goodbye to my book friends when I got to the end.
I am so looking forward to this book, and was over the moon to be offered an extract to read. I now cannot wait for publication date. I enjoyed the first in this series and know that I will enjoy this one, if the first few chapters are anything to go by. This is a must read book on my TBR list on publication day, if not before.
Loved The Essex Dogs' first outing, and this sample just leaves me wanting more. Great stuff. Looking forward to publication date.
EEEEEEEK!! Loved the first three chapters and can't wait for the rest! I don't want to really say much becuase it is only the first three, but believe me in that it starts off with a bang and I have no doubt that the rest will be just as fantastic as Essex Dogs.
As always, Dan Jones captivates me with his writing abilities. I loved "Essex Dogs", and I love what I've read so far. He managed to keep historical facts straight, while giving it a sense of humor and very humanised characters.
All in all, an amazing book from an amazing author. Looking forward to it!
This is inevitably what I would consider a "bro book."
Having much enjoyed Dan Jones's edition of War of the Roses, I have been eyeing his new historical series with great interest! Having read this 3 chapter excerpt, I am concluded that his historical knowledge greatly allows for him to transport the reader back in time and set the scene. His dialogue keeps with the times, and is not jarring or derivative from the story. In 3 chapters I was clear on separate characters, and was following an engaging story!
A small disclaimer might be considered, the 3 chapter excerpt I read contained the F word 38 times, in 35 pages.
Thank you to NetGalley for the excerpt from this book! And thank you Dan Jones for your brilliant research.
More wonderful tales of derring-do featuring Loveday and his indomitable dogs of war as they are part of the besieging Calais.
A teasing taste of what is to come when the book is published later in the year.
I can’t wait to read it
