A twisted and psychological thriller that creates a tense and worryingly reality that offers you an insight in to another dimension of humanity. Thoroughly entertaining and worth the investment - enjoy - especially the end!

You Can’t Hide was one of my absolute favorite thrillers to date. The narration was wonderfully done and everything that didn’t make sense, made sense in the end.
The characters were developed well and I enjoyed the overall plot of the story.

You Can't Hide by Emily Shriner was a great thriller that kept me on my toes. I'm really glad I went into this book without reading an excerpt or description beforehand because, with the content, I may not have read it. But after reading, I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone with the TW warnings and stuck with it. Though I found one of the twists a bit predictable, I was shocked and left on the edge of my seat. Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC copy of this book.

Trigger Warning ⚠️ Domestic Violence

This was my first book by Emily Shiner and I'll definitely be on the lookout for more 😉. There two storylines happening simultaneously and we assume there is a connection. I like reading two stories in one. When Ian annoyed me, the next chapter switched back to Lizzy and then I could be angry with Zachary. This was a quick read and kept me on the edge of my seat seeing if my predictions were correct!

Thanks to Netgalley, Emily Shiner, and the publisher for the audio Arc!

I am really glad that I went in blind with this book. I knew that it was a suspense and thriller, when I'm looking at descriptions I do read like the first little sentence of the description, look at the cover, and then what the genre of the book fits into. After I read a book I'll go in and read the description to see what I can talk about and not give too much away. Why am I glad that went in blind? I feel like the description just completely spoils part of the story and really isn't what the book is about, at all. Do the things in the description occur...yes? Do I personally feel the central part of the point of the story is the description . . . no?

I honestly don't know a great way to give a summary of what to expect with out spoilers. So let us try, we have two POVs of this story, Beth and Lizzie. We don't know how these stories connect because they are very different, but you know that somehow they will. Beth goes to the woods with her husband to prepare the cabin for sale, they show up to find that the part time care taker has made a nice little home in the cabin that he should not be living in. Things aren't necessarily how they seem. Then we have Lizzie, she is married to a man that controls absolutely everything about her, going to extremes to make her perfect so she is 'worthy' of him. How will Lizzie survive this cruel life that she is living? So, that is the nut shell of this, fairly shorth thriller. The beginning is a lot of set up, nothing spectacular or weird, then things get weird, and then things get awful and there is a lot of torture and abuse across the story lines. The thing I wonder is...what happened to the cat? I want to know if she found a home after everything that went down or she she now wandering the snowy woods trying to survive bears . . and wolves....are there bears and wolves in New York?

I have a bad habit in stories like this, anything with a bad guy, in trying to figure out how the stories connected and how everything will turn out. I was going back and forth on how I thought they would connect but I was able to connect the dots eventually. I know that there is a reality for people like Lizzie where people are this manipulated and controlled, I also know that this story can be a bit triggering for DA survivors, if that is the case know that it does get pretty moderately intense. I would say there is gore, and there is....kind of. The bloody horrible scenes are more lead to your imagination and not described to terribly in detail, so it is not overly graphic

The audio narrator did a good job, I actually thought that there were two narrators at the beginning because Lizzie and Beth sounded pretty different. Our narrator did a good job bringing the intensity to the situations and bringing us into the moment

This is a pretty good domestic thriller with lots of questions that don't all necessarily get tied up in the end, but worth the read, and can be devoured in a sitting.

You Can't Hide by Emily Shiner (Goodreads Author), Emily Durante (Narrator)
Colleen Chi-Girl's review on Jul 11, 2023
Bookshelves: 2023, audio, dreamscape-media, women-centered, us-no-amer, carolinas-n-s, contemporary, netgalley, new-york, thrillers, crime-mysteries

The cover of this novel is just beautiful and I swoon every time I see it. Bravo to this artist and unsung s/hero.

I want to thank Dreamscape Media, NetGalley, and the author Emily Shiner, for the audiobook ARC, which was enjoyably narrated by the talented Emily Durante. She takes care of everyone's voice in the novel. There are dual timelines in the story beginning first with Lizzie from No. Carolina and her handsome, GC, doctor husband. The 2nd timeline features another young couple Beth and Ian. The description provided by the publisher keys in on the 2nd timeline, so you know this ahead of time.

This is a twisty, dark, violent, abusive relationships kind of book. Sadistic and beyond cruel. I could blank some of this out while listening to it, but my real issue for the 3 * rating has more to do with the beginning. When Lizzie meets the handsome doctor, when her car breaks down, even I, who don't really care for romantic stories, was smiling inwardly. But Shiner shoots from a beautiful courtship and marriage to a very evil relationship in what feels like a nanosecond. If you are the kind of person who is squeamish and/or have triggers about emotional abuse, physical abuse, and sadism, stay clear of it. I know many readers love a dark and over the top thriller and torture, and they will probably enjoy this because it moves fast and, like I said, it's twisty and dark...and over the top.

The 2nd timeline is explained below by the publisher's blurb so I won't go into it, but they are a far different couple experiencing the pain of infertility and the outrageous costs of fertility treatments...and then their lives change quickly.

Description:
Beth and Ian are desperate to have a child. So much so that they decide to sell his family cabin in upstate New York to pay for IVF. When they arrive at the cabin, they meet Ryan, the caretaker. But Ryan is not who he says he is… He’s here because he knows Beth has a dark secret. And now he intends to use it against her. He threatens to tell Ian everything about Beth's past unless she does exactly what he says. Beth finds herself caught in a nightmarish trap. If Ian discovers what she’s been hiding from him, she’s sure he’ll leave her. She’ll lose everything she cares about, including the chance to have a child of her own. On the other hand, what Ryan wants her to do is so dark and twisted it’s beyond horrifying. Either way, Beth is sure her life is over, she can see no way out.

Im disappointed in the book.. It was good thru some of it but then when the story starting to come together, it was ok but then thats where it all went to poop. There is no conclusion and i strongly dislike that. I feel like i wasted my time. :(

Thank you Dreamscape, Emily Shiner, and Netgalley for this audio in exchange for an honest review. This is a definite fast paced book. Narration was on point and I loved her as a narrator! Even though I half way figured it out, there was a twist that I didn’t see coming towards the end. I did feel that the ending was a little rushed. Took me two days to finish. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 strong, solid stars!

This book was interesting enough to keep me listening, but not so interesting that I can’t wait to recommend it to customers. I did have to listen at 1.25 speed because the reader was SO slow.

I got You Can't Hide as an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. For me, this was a good slow burn, but I am not sure it paid off, because in the long run, this was a great and pleasant book that I enjoyed listening to, however, I felt like as it approached the ending, I got slightly confused. But! Overall, I really did love the book, and I felt it was a pleasant read. I highly recommend. I realize it may sound like I did not like the novel, but I did! It is just a terrific book.

I also want to brag on the narrator who did a wonderful job narrating the book!

Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a solid thriller, with dual timelines that kept me powering through chapter after chapter. I guessed most of the twists but there were some that I never saw coming that had my jaw on the floor when I heard them. I had no idea what the connection was between the two timelines right up until the big reveal, which I'll admit was pretty far fetched, but so entertaining. I usually find the narrator irritating and grating but this one did a great job. Emily Shiner is a new author to me and I'll definitely be checking out more of her work.
Content warnings; intense domestic violence and extreme gaslighting.

You Can’t Hide
Told over 2 perspectives in alternating chapters. 1st we meet Lizzie, who after breaking down on the side of the road meets the charming new doctor in town. He proceeds to sweep her off her feet and soon they marry. However things are not quite as they seem, is the dishy doc too good to be true?
Then we meet Beth, who along with her husband Ian travels to his remote family cabin in order to prepare it to sell. When they get there it seems someone has been living there, who is it and what are they planning ?

What links these 2 storylines seemingly set in different areas.

I listened to the audiobook of this title and found the narrators did a great job of bringing the characters to life. There were clues sprinkled throughout but subtle enough not to give away entirely.
In Lizzie’s story we are aware of the domestic abuse going on and this could be a trigger to some readers. However I felt it was very well written

Highly recommend.
This was my 1st title by this author and I am keen to explore more from her.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to listen to this title

A chilling thriller told in alternating POVs and timelines. The twists are satisfying and surprising. The protagonist is morally ambiguous and the ending a kick in the pants. Nice job by the narrator. Did not detract from story.

Thanks NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for an advanced audio copy of this book. I really enjoyed it. I have never read any of Shiner’s other works but I definitely will check them out after this. Lizzie is a down on her luck waitress when she meet the charming Dr. Zachary Pierce. He whisks her off her feet. Soon she finds out that he is a controlling monster. Beth and Ian leave North Carolina so that they can clean out Ian’s family cabin so that they can sell it and start IVF. There is a snowstorm in upstate New York and their caretaker, Ryan, is no where to be found. Soon he shows up and starts giving off some weird vibes. Meanwhile we find out that Lizzy killed her abusive father and she is now planning to kill Zachary. The two stories converge and the ending is not as predictable as you might think. This is a beach read. I don’t think it would be good for a book club.

You Can’t Hide by Emily Shiner was a fun read.

I enjoyed the dual timeline perspective of the story as well as the twists and turns the character dealt with.

I would recommend this thriller to family and friends and I am looking forward to Emily Shiner’s next book.

Thank you NetGalley, Emily Shiner, and Inkubator Books for this ALC.

A mildly twisty thriller with a dark side.

I have mixed feelings about this book. The way it’s told is very unique which I enjoyed - you aren’t sure what the connection is abs when you find out it’s a nice twist, but there were parts of it I struggled with.

The MC is…confusing/annoying at times? There seems to be a lot of repetition from the bad guy as well (which I get that he’s crazy but he’s pedantic and obsessive to the point of being a caricature). I liked when the MC took back her “power” in a sense but not what happened after 😑 and really found the end to be anticlimactic. Though I do appreciate the symmetry!

All in all it’s well written and interesting but they’re just things that bugged me personally. If you like thrillers this one may be perfect for you! It’s a quick read and audiobook is well done!

My rating: 3*

🔪 You Can't Hide 🔪

First off, thank you so much to @netgalley Emily shiner and dreamscapemedia for the ALC! 🥰

Netgalley rating:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Now for the review, this is a psychological thriller with a bunch of twists and turns to keep you entertained! I went in completely blind per usual but if you want the synopsis swipe the pic. The plot was creative and had two interlacing stories that kept me constantly on the edge guessing what was going on. The way everything played out on the end was great to read. The ending was unexpected and left me surprised.

⚠️ This thriller is a tad bit on the darker side so check tw!

I was really excited for this book, but it ended up disappointing me.
First, nothing about the description of this book tells you that it's dual POV. We aren't just following Beth and her husband, but are also following Lizzy and her husband, and during the 1/3rd of the book that I read, I felt we spent much more time with Lizzy than Beth.
Second, if you've read a decent amount of thrillers, you'll be able to guess the twist pretty quickly, I had figured it out within 5%, and I'm not usually good at guessing twists.
Third, and my biggest issue with this book, is that nothing in the description tells you that one of the POVs (Lizzy) is largely about her abusive relationship. Her husband is manipulative, emotionally and physically abusive. He seems to have little to no redeeming qualities, and we are given very little insight into the development of their relationship, so his abuse goes from zero to 100 very quickly. This wouldn't necessarily have ruined the book for me, but I just read The Drowning Woman, and liked that one much more, so this one was just feeling really disappointing.
This book just really wasn't for me, but if the concept sounds interesting, you might enjoy it.
