Wow!! What a crazy intense story! It’s like nothing I’ve read before. Featuring little ones that can be creepy and the mothers who’ll do anything to protect them. #ChandlerBaker has quite the creative mind! I love how she also shows how real it is for moms to go through so much & just struggle to do their best! There’s so much I could say, but I can’t give away any spoilers!
January LaVoy is the incredible audiobook narrator!
Thank you, Chandler Baker, Macmillan Audio & Netgalley for my early audiobook! All opinions are my own.
This is now my favorite of Chandler's!!! What a gross, gruesome, odd and frightening storyline (IN. THE. BEST. WAY!).
If a million other things hadn't solidified that I'm not having kids, this would've been a wonderful addition to the list I give people when they ask. I LOVED the premise, but also the underlying themes of motherhood that are often overlooked & misunderstood. It was a brutal commentary on the things that women give up when they become mothers, whether they wanted to or not- their identity, their body, etc,,,,and in this case, quite literally- their own flesh and blood.
Changing POVs were done so well by our narrator, January LaVoy- I was CACKLING when the kids were telling their sides of the story....kids are such little unreliable narrators, and for the police to be leaning on them for good evidence was comical.
There really wasn't anything I disliked about this book and I've already recommended it to my friends and fellow readers...except those who can't stomach blood...then some of the scenes in the book would probably make them faint.
1000000 stars for this blood-sucking good read!
This story was nothing like I expected it’s sort of a suspenseful twist on motherhood.
When these children start preschool and the parents soon notice the children are craving blood, you wonder are they vampires?
The use of the children and this medical condition weaves a story of mothers facing societal struggles and how they deal with them on a daily basis in this unique thought provoking way. Overall it was a unique story l didn’t really love it but I didn’t dislike it either.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review.
WOW! Talk about ingenuity, fun, and thrilling, I absolutely loved Cutting Teeth by Chandler Baker. I will listen to just about anything narrated by January LaVoy, that being said, this story was a knockout. It scores so high in my mind based on the creative plot alone. The audio production was phenomenal, I loved the bits of music, the introduction of the detective interviewing the students, and LaVoy's voice brings each character to life. She especially nailed the kids' voices.
This book starts out pretty predictably- a lot of fretting over classes, teachers, other students, but the personalities are in-your-face from the jump. As soon as the first bite happens, it's all downhill in the most delightful way for the preschoolers and moms. I am a former coach of youth sports, and I really got a kick out of the portrayal of the different mom personalities and how each character developed.
This book is a breeze to listen to, I finished it in one weekend. I couldn't get enough, by the ending I was very excited to see how it would play out! It was an equally predictable and unpredictable ending, the twists kept coming up until the end, which I liked a lot.
This is my favorite book by Chandler Baker to date, can't wait to read more.
Thank you once again to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this, it was a blast. One of those audiobooks that reminds you why you enjoy them, I got lost in the story and loved it.
Thank you MacMillan publisher, Chandler Baker, and Netgalley for this book in exchange for this audio. I was really excited to be granted early listening to this for a couple of reasons. First, my very first audio book I ever tried and listened to was The Whisper Network I won from goodreads. It was what got me into audios in the first place so this author will always have a special place in my heart. 2 I love January LaVoy. Narration was awesome. Writing was good. It has some funny parts to the story. There was a nice twist at the end of the book. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 solid stars for this one!
What a weird book. A lot of it didn't really add up at the end. Like it made us keep reading and then turned into nothing
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to receive an audio copy of Cutting Teeth by Chandler Baker, this review is mine and mine alone. This story was crazy, and you see the lives of a few different parents and what they are going through along with how they are connected by their kids all in the same class. Then add in murder, a strange new pastor, and blood drinkers. It would cause all sorts of pandemonium. And it truly did. It made you wonder who it was and why it happened. Things starts to unravel as the time goes on and everyone nearly has a deep dark secret. Some of the secrets are worse than others but that is part of the charm of this book. If you enjoy murder mysteries that have a lot going on around it, you will truly enjoy this one.
This thriller was so fun! Creepy children and the audio was great with the little voices. This was a highly original concept - bizarre and fascinating and I loved every minute of it!
I enjoyed Cutting Teeth, though it wasn't exactly what I expected. For some reason I thought it would be a dark comedy, but mostly it was just dark.
This was such a different sort of story. The double takes I gave my phone while listening to the audio came frequently and it’s been quite awhile since that happened.
I received the audio through NetGalley and the narrator was a perfect fit in my opinion. Since this book centers around mothers and their young children, this narrator was absolute perfection.
The story itself had its moments. While there were plenty that I had to double take, there were also plenty of places that felt a bit monotonous and there were several parents that I just plain didn’t like. It felt realistic since that’s how parent groups are in real life too - there’s others you connect with while there are some you just don’t - and I appreciate that. They symbolism in this book could really mean many things from it just being a creepy story to a physical symbol of kids draining their parents (specifically their mothers). It works.
If you can handle blood and other creepy things, I’d give this book a try. It’s pretty solid.
This was a phenomenal audiobook, the production was so well done and January’s narration of all the characters was spectacular!
“Everyone is hiding something in one way or another.”
When their children’s preschool teacher is killed just after many of the children begin to display signs of juvenile vampirism, the parents of Little Academy are left in a state of panic. Everyone becomes a suspect as they seek to learn the truth.
I loved the concept of this book and its commentary on motherhood. The beginning and ending were quite strong, but the story’s middle left me underwhelmed. Despite that I am still looking forward to reading from the author again.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an ALC of the title in exchange for my honest review.
WOWZA This book was a bit crazy! I feel if I try and explain it at all I will give away important parts. I do suggest going in blind, its a good book to not know what's going on until it happens!! If you like thrillers read this. Its a book into its own!
This was such a unique story and the narrator was absolutely fantastic. I'm not a mom yet, but Cutting Teeth made me respect all women, especially mothers, more. I loved the alternating POVs and the precocious children. While I didn't entirely connect with parts of the story I did enjoy it!
Cutting Teeth Review!!
Thank you Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for this gifted copy, in exchange for an honest review! Cutting Teeth is out now!
I love creepy kids, but a whole classroom full of them?? That’s what I’m talking about! 😄 Cutting Teeth was a 3.25/5 ⭐️ for me! I went into this one thinking it was going to be a very suspenseful horror book. It turned out to be more so a drama, which was the reason for the 3.25 stars. The narration of this book was incredible though. Probably my new favorite narrator and her kid voices (there were a lot of them) were each so unique and incredible. 5/5 ⭐️ for Ms. LaVoy!!
Synopsis: When a young teacher is found dead in her preschool classroom, the parents are in shock. The only eye witnesses are 10 four year olds, but strange things start to occur and they are quickly turned into suspects as well.
Ooooo, this one was so deliciously dark! With equal parts satirical and chilling, this one dives deep into modern motherhood and the performance pressures mothers tend to face!
I found it incredibly thought provoking as it explores Pediatric Renfield’s Syndrome which is also known as clinical vampirism, and if you haven’t put it together yet, that’s the desire for drinking blood, but pediatric being a children’s version! 😳
Told from multiple POVs, I found the narration of the audio version utterly fantastic! I relished in the mixed media of interviews and news articles that were sprinkled throughout!
With a whodunit and murder mystery at its core, I found this plot very entertaining and loved how thrillingly witty it was! It was uniquely clever, definitely different and certainly weird, but it totally worked!
I just listened to Cutting Teeth and the narration was perfection. It is the story of a preschool class of 4 year olds who are craving the taste of blood and the kids and their moms get caught up in a criminal investigation at the school. This book had it all. It was suspenseful with little red herrings tossed out so perfectly that I had no idea where it was going and who was guilty. It had snarky dry wit making fun of the helicopter moms of these little vampires. It had moms whining about their mental load, annoying husbands and overall stress. And it had all the little kids being interviewed by the detectives with all their cuteness and funny kid comments. There is something about how @chandlerbakerbooks describes the thoughts of a mom, particularly a working mom, that just really hits home for me and makes me think she truly gets me. I loved everything about this book.
CUTTING TEETH
Chandler Baker
CUTTING TEETH is the latest by Chandler Baker, a thriller with a big bite of satire.
In CUTTING TEETH we’re following a preschool class and their parents at Little Academy. Darby, Marybeth, and Rhea all have preschoolers at the academy. They are struggling to cope with everyday stresses when a mysterious condition starts to affect the children of the preschool
The kids are "craving" blood and being a mom becomes one of the most dangerous jobs around. One day the preschool teacher is found dead and only the 4-year- old's are able to give witness.
This is the first book by Chandler Baker I have read so I didn’t know what to expect. The writing in CUTTING TEETH is funny and sharp. It feels like a wink and a nod to mothers in the throes of parenting. I immensely enjoyed the opening of the book, and I loved the setup. However, the second half was a bit of a letdown.
There is a loss of consistency throughout the text. This could be due to the formatting of the material which in part includes interview excerpts with suspects and witnesses. The jumping around at some point became too much and was distracting.
And the kids.
The kids’ perspectives get annoying at some point. And the text started to feel lofty and empty. I found some of the content pointless and dragging on beyond the point of cheekiness to becoming an annoyance. Leaving me wishing I could skim parts of the ending, just to get to the end and to see what happened.
I listened to the audiobook and was, as usual, impressed by January LaVoy’s performance. LaVoy alternates between character voices with precision. I cannot imagine this book being read by anyone else.
All total I gave CUTTING TEETH three stars and I’m chalking it up to a miss for me solely based on a few key characters, those pesky, hungry 4-year-olds. CUTTING TEETH might be a great book for you, especially if you are a new parent or someone that deals with little ones as a profession.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy and the opportunity to provide feedback on this title.
CUTTING TEETH…⭐️⭐️⭐️
This story follows three mothers who all have preschoolers in the same class. A class in which many of the children have an unsettling medical condition where they crave blood and want to drink it. A class where the teacher was just murdered in the school and no one knows who did it. This book is part mystery and part commentary on motherhood.
This book is unique and to be honest, the plot got a bit bizarre at times, but I didn’t hate it. Chandler Baker always has a way of commenting on women’s social issues and this book definitely has deep themes of motherhood and how far mom’s will go for their children. And the mystery is a twisty wild ride for sure. This book is unlike anything I have ever read and I will be thinking about it for a while.
January LaVoy did a phenomenal job narrating the audiobook as always. She is fantastic at adding emotion and depth to the story and I always love listening to her. I do wish there has been a full cast of narrators for the different points of view as I sometimes really had to pay attention to see when the POV switched and which character was the focus.
Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the advance copy.
4 stars
This is a wonderful and unique novel! I laughed, I almost cried, I rooted for lots of characters, & enjoyed hating a couple villains. (Also, the audiobook narrator & the voices she does are fantastic!)
[What I liked:]
•This is a very creative story! It’s a mystery but it’s also satire & maybe sorta fantasy? It did not end the way I was expecting at all, but the ending is still pretty good.
•This book is so funny! Amusing characters, lots of little details that satirize motherhood, religion, & marriage, & plenty of situational humor involving children made this both a hilarious & a thought provoking read.
•I liked all the characters! Crunchy Rhea & her essential oils start-up, smarmy Pastor Ben & his sex challenge, scores of husbands who expect their wives to feed their children blood but aren’t willing to themselves, delusional parents who think their kids drinking human blood is just normal childhood development, wholesome Mary Beth, & a cast of hilarious children all made this so fun to read!
[What I didn’t like as much:]
•Okay, I’m pretty disappointed that the problem with biting just…goes away eventually & is never explained? That felt like a cop out tbh.
CW: murder, racism, sexism, ableism, substance abuse, infidelity
[I received an ARC ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you for the book!]
Thank you Netgalley & Macmillan audio for an ALC of Cutting Teeth by Chandler Baker!
The setting of this one is Little Academy, where the preschoolers have developed a craving for blood (what???). This doesn't seem like SUCH a big deal until a teacher is found dead and the only witnesses are the ten bloodsucking 4-year olds. Yikes.
The story follows the mothers of the children - Darby, Mary, Beth, and Freddie - Each with their own parenting styles and opinions on the blood (and murder). One thing's for certain though - All the mothers want to protect their children at all costs. Each of them was at Little Academy on the day of the murder. Who's hiding what?
Really enjoyed the multiple POVs with this one and the different personalities of the moms. The bloodsucking syndrome was an interesting take on this book that would've otherwise been a relatively straightforward thriller - So I really appreciate the freshness! I am looking forward to reading more of Chandler Baker's work.
