I liked the premise but these moms were so unlikeable I wasn't invested.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillin Audio for the ARC
The premise of this book sounded intriguing and I was excited to read it, but sadly it didn’t live up to my expectations.
I am a mom to a four year old, so I thought I might be able to relate to that part of the story. This story was not relatable in any way. These children are written more like one year olds, than children headed to Kindergarten soon. All of the moms are awful and annoying. I had to DNF at 48% because I just couldn’t listen to the nonsense any longer. All the drama was just cringy.
Sadly, this book really fell flat for me.
Thank you to Macmillan audio for ALC to listen to and review.
I absolutely loved this book. The hilarious mix of horror and satire warmed my heart while terrifying me at the same time. I love the commentary on modern motherhood. Any woman who is a child or has close friends with children can absolutely relate to this book!
This gave me Big Little Lies and Baby Teeth vibes. The plot was interesting and I liked the last section of the book. I felt like it wrapped everything up with no loose ends which I can appreciate.
I had high expectations for this book. I found myself struggling to continue through it, hoping it would pick up half way through. I though this book was going to be a little creepy with vampire like kids but it focused more on the parents lives so the kids were just background. I did enjoy the narrator and the cover is really cool! I will still recommend this book because this is my opinion and others may really enjoy this book.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to this ARC in advance for my honest opinion.
Cutting Teeth was such a fun book that kept me guessing until the end!
The book centers around 3 women whose children all attend the same preschool where the teacher is found dead during the class time. The children in this class happen to be biting and enjoying the taste of blood which adds and interesting element to the book. Even though that part is fairly outlandish, I found the parts about mothering incredibly relatable! So much so that I occasionally texted quotes from the book to my other mom friends. She really captured different elements of parenting perfectly.
I liked the ending and while I suspected part of it, the other part was really surprising! It was a page turner and I found myself wanting to read it when I wasn’t. I enjoyed the alternating POV- it made it go quickly.
This is perfect for you if you enjoy neighborhood drama type books with a little bit of mystery/thriller mixed in.
Thanks netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
Cutting Teeth centers around a group of mothers and their children, who are 4 year-old classmates at the Little Academy preschool. Sweet, innocent little ones, who suddenly develop a taste for blood. Especially from their mothers.
Mothers could be often said to be sucked dry- by their children, their partners, their jobs, by societal expectations placed on them- even by the pressures placed on them by other mothers. In Cutting Teeth, this suddenly becomes quite literal.
Is this a murder mystery, or a vampire tale, or a satire, or is it a social commentary on the pressures of motherhood? In short, yes. All of the above- and all the better for it. I quite enjoyed this- and I’ve never been more happy with my decision not to be a mother.
The audiobook was narrated perfectly by January LaVoy, with a bonus conversation afterward between the author and Emma Rosenblum.
Thank you Chandler Baker, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for providing this ALC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
As a woman who has chosen to remain childless, I often read books about motherhood and wonder, "is this accurate?" or "are people really like this?" or "no wonder kids are turning out like this these days." Once you have read this book you will realize that none of these questions are relevant, but what is relevant is how far the author intimates that parents will go to cater to their children.
The concept of Renfield syndrome in children is a fascinating metaphor for how children can suck the (figurative) life right out of you. It made me chuckle at first because we experienced our own spate of biting at a local school recently, but after a few chapters I was leaning more toward disgusted than amused.
If you can get past the concept of child blood sucker and read this story for the greater allegory and the subplots, I think people will enjoy it!
A satire and thriller/mystery mixed all into one, Chandler Baker’s latest novel is a combination of motherhood and murder —with humor and the question of what would you do, how far would you go for your children?
The story is centered around Little Academy preschool where many of the kids are developing a taste for blood. Soon when their young teacher is found dead in the classroom, the 4 year olds quickly go from witnesses to suspects. As police investigate, three of the class moms — Rhea, Darby, & Mary Beth — take up their own investigation as they work to uncover the real answer.
This was a refreshing and funny story (despite the topic of murder) and often left me laughing out loud at some of the lines (Poo-dini was a favorite). The audiobook version was great with narrator January LaVoy. While the twist at the very end was great, I only wish we got more explanation as to the cause of the blood cravings and while some kids weren’t impacted & some were! (Sequel novella perhaps?)
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Flatiron Books for the ARC. This will be released on 7/18!
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* 4.5 This was such a creepy book! perhaps bc of the names (i know ppl with the same names) but yikes! i would actually reread this one!
A fresh take on the motherhood / domestic drama genre, Cutting Teeth centers on three moms and their children who attend Little Academy preschool. Rhea, Mary Beth and Darby are working through their own challenges as women and mothers when it's clear that something is very wrong with the 4 year olds at Little Academy. The students are craving blood and biting their parents to "feed." Then a teacher is found dead and both the children and their parents become suspects in the murder investigation.
Overall I really enjoyed this book, but it did not fully live up to my expectations. The children's medical "issue" seemed almos a bit too bizarre for me, compared to what I found much more fascinating, the author's take on the complexity of motherhood and female friendship. Baker's writing is top notch and January LaVoy is an excellent narrator as always.
This book wasn’t for me. I think I went into this thinking it was more of a story about vampire children. It fell flat and dragged on. The plot seems to be more worked around the three moms and their lives than the vampire children. I also feel like it was a totally unrealistic view of how parents would react if their children turned into vampires. I’m not leaving a rating because it just wasn’t for me but doesn’t mean it might not be someone else’s type of book.
"Cutting Teeth" is absolutely NOT what I expected, but that is OK! I thought this was going to be similar to Craig DiLouie's "Suffer The Children" that is also a book about vampiric children. However that book is FULL on horrors, while this book is satire and a commentary on how parents judge each other. I THOUGHT I wanted serious horror with this book, and maybe I did at the beginning, but between January Lavoy's glorious narration (as usual) and Baker's delightful writing (as usual) I quickly went from being like "Oh" to "OH HELL YEAH!" This is one good book! In fact, it's great!
I think I have a particular interest in books (especially horror and horror-adjacent ones) that have to do with parents because I do not and will never have children of my own, so I feel like I am getting a sneak peek into a world that I literally cannot comprehend. It made the reading experience that must more fun and exciting for me. I am sure actual parents will enjoy this book revolving around parents for different reasons. Kudos to Baker for being able to write a book that is captivating enough to keep a child-free woman hooked from the get go.
This book was an absolute page-turner and I would 100% recommend it to fans of Stephen King (serious horror) and fans of Grady Hendrix (satirical horror). Baker is the PERFECT blend of the two! 4.5/5 stars!
I have never read a book by Chandler Baker before but OMG if I will not be looking for her book in the future with Google eyes! Not to mention I will definitely listen to another book narrated by January Lavoie irregardless of the plot because she is just that good. This is about a group of four-year-olds that go to the nursery at the local church and not unlike others in history start having a biting fetish with a yearning for blood. What makes matters even worse is that the mothers who bring their children to the school or the kinder Uber worried about what others think of them and try to put out a perfect persona of them their mothering and especially their children… Who are all geniuses of course. They are so willing to do anything for the children eventually one of them even orders syringes from Amazon so she could draw her own blood to give to her daughter. That’s Marybeth and then there’s Rea She is called to a meeting with Miss Ali the preschools teacher and she she’s told that she really needs to make different choices when it comes to her child Theo‘s nutritional intake. Miss Ally thinks Theo looks a little skinny and needs more calories in the purple cauliflower and vegetable grits she’s been sending just isn’t cutting it not to mention he really doesn’t eat it. Poor Rea is trying so hard to be a good mother she never wanted to have a baby but once he was born that was all she wrote because her heart grew legs and started walking and she called it Theo. Then there’s also Darby, her and Rhea were my favorite characters. Derby is married to Griff who seems antisocial but when Miss Allie was found dead in her classroom they have many suspects and some of them aren’t even 3 feet tall yet. I know this is under the horror genre but it is really more like thriller and I mean a great thriller just an FYI even when you think you know the whole story and the story is over don’t stop listening until it’s absolutely over because the OMG moments end the twist don’t stop until the very last word is spoken and OMG if there isn’t a twist or rather mini twist in this great book. If you love thrillers with a slight hora slant then you log “cutting teeth“ by Chandler Baker and I would definitely recommend reading the audiobooks narrated by January Lavoie she is awesome. There’s also an author interview with Chandler Baker and the author of bad Summer people by Emma Rosenbloom which is also an awesome awesome book no other their friends they’re both very talented and right super Uber thrillers! I love this book and highly recommend that a definite five star performance and story. I received this book from NetGalley and McMillan audio but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced audiobook. All I can say is this book was extremely strange. But I loved it. Narration was excellent. But I’ve come to love this narrator through other audiobooks.
I listened to this in one day! I went in not knowing to much about the plot but enjoyed this. Definitely a bizarre storyline but enjoyed the banter and writing style. Blood thirsty preschool kids is such an odd storyline but think that new moms will enjoy this and get a good laugh. Just not for the blood adverse.
The narrator did a fantastic job and much easier to follow the characters and kept me engaged through the whole story
3 star
Following a group of mothers and their preschool a ged children who suddenly develop vampiric behavior. This is essentially just a domestic mystery and the vampire kids plot feels pointless. Cool concept but never really went anywhere. Also way too long.
The most bizarre and creative concept that made me queasy at times and completely validated at others. Chandler Baker's social commentary element to her thrillers is always my favorite part of her writing, and this one, even though I'm not a mom, hit home for me as a best friend to moms who have sacrificed their bodies on a daily basis for their offsprings.
This book is not for the blood averse! The audio was faaaaantastic. Loved the little kid voices. What a great twisty ending!!!
#CuttingTeeth:
Thank you @macmillan.audio for my gifted copy of Cutting Teeth (out July 18)
Cutting Teeth is a bizarre and hilarious look into motherhood, keeping up with the Jonses, and really trying to find yourself when you’ve lost it to your family.
These little pre-k goblins go into a biting tizzy, which has them wanting to crave blood. Someone grab a type O bag stat, they’re hungry. One day, their pre-k teacher is found not alive in the room. Who did it? Was the kids? Was it.. the blood? Or, is something more sinister.. and well wacky, happening here.
January LaVoy OF COURSE did such an amazing job on audio. She was phenomenal and truly hit the snark and banter perfectly. She also really gave me a better understanding of the moms, because honestly, I got all of them and their kids confused. But audio definitely helped me get it straight.
This is definitely one I will not forget because it is so off the wall, but also, the ending had me really in shock. I had to listen back a few times to truly grasp what was said. A smash hit.
Thank you again @macmillan.audio! Cutting Teeth out next month.
Something is going on at Little Academy Preschool. Kids are biting and a teacher dies during school. Parents are anxious to find out why their kids are biting and seem to be addicted to blood.
I liked the idea of this story line, but felt that it focused more on the adults and not the kids, which made me lose interest.
