Now, who didn't love this funny little actor from the Black and white old films.........Now I am showing my age!!!! So when I saw this book I wanted to learn more.....

The Early Years of Charlie Chaplin by Prof Lisa Stein Haven was a wonderful book. This book looks through Charlie Chaplin early life, his family and especially his career. Prof Lisa Stein Haven describes in detail about his life and best of all there are Rare photos throughout this book.
This was a joy to read and learn about Charlie Chaplin who made me laugh when I was young, watching him on the television with my grandad and 2 small sisters. The room was full of love and laughter and we used to talk about him all afternoon, Memories that I will never forget so when this book came out I just had to learn more about him, Shame my grandad isn't here now, he would of loved looking through this book with me.
One of my childhood hero's that used to make me lol.

This book covers the early years of Charlie Chaplin's filmmaking career -- it touches briefly throughout on his personal life. I felt it was the perfect amount of coverage because there are other books including Chaplin's autobiography that covers his personal life in detail. This book is meticulously researched and provides detail about financing and casting his films. It also addresses pressures he had to contribute to the war effort (if not in the UK, then in the US by encouraging the buying of war bonds). It also addresses the FBI tailing him and his eventual deportation to the UK where he had to face uncertainty in exile. When he was finally welcomed back by the Academy of Motion Pictures in the 1970's for a lifetime achievement, I remember vividly watching this on television as a child because I was a huge fan of Chaplin from a young age. I will never forget the emotions and the standing ovation he received. It was a beautiful homecoming and an honor for such an incredible and influential actor and filmmaker. I really appreciated that this book filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge of his filmmaking.

Thank you to Netgalley and Pen & Sword, White Owl for an ARC and I left this review voluntarily.

There’s such a plethora of books out there about Charlie and his career and family. I’m not sure this one was that much different than any of the others I’ve read. It’s not a bad book, it was just a reread of old information for me. It would be a nice addition to a collector of Charlie memorabilia.
I just reviewed The Early Years of Charlie Chaplin by Prof Lisa Stein Haven. #TheEarlyYearsofCharlieChaplin #NetGalley

This is as much a history of cinema as a history of an individual. The first part reads almost like a trip itinerary and is a little slow paced, taking us through Chaplin’s efforts to promote Liberty Bonds but the pace picks up after that and offers some interesting insights into the industry. Those looking for information on Chaplin’s personal life and psychology will be disappointed as this is quite sparsely peppered within the details of his work.
