Thank you NetGalley, Mad Cave Studios, and the author Ennun Ana Iurov for the ARC copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the creepy illustrations and vibes in this one. However, the story fell a bit flat. It was far to short to really sell the story. There was way too much lore and backstory at the beginning which made the ending feel extremely rushed. We didn't really get any real answers or closure and there was just not enough. I felt let down at the end.

This was a short little graphic novel at only 87 pages. I don’t normally read a lot of graphic novels, but I do when the mood strikes me.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit. The graphics were great, the story was great, and I enjoyed the characters as well.

My only complaint I have is, I wish it was a bit longer. Not too much, just a tad.

It was humorous in some spots, eerie and creepy in others, and bloody in some. It was a perfect combination of all those things.

I definitely plan to read more from this author!

I highly recommend this if you like horror and graphic novels. It’s the perfect combination for both, and it hits the spot perfectly!!!

Thank you to the Netgalley, Mad Cave Studios, Maverick, and author Ennun Ana lurov for an advanced copy of this book! All opinions are my own. Available as of October 24, 2023.

This supernatural graphic novel tells an eerie tale involving a dark and mysterious forest. We follow a young man, Adam, who is visiting his best friend in Romania. When he arrives, he learns that his friend has disappeared after visiting a forest they had planned to see together. He also learns that many have gone missing in this forest, including a growing number of young men. So Adam decides to look for his friend despite receiving many warnings, including from locals in the area.

It felt like this short story was neither the beginning nor the end of this dark tale. It was hard to tell how many details of the disappearances were truth versus urban legend. Although the townspeople were saddened by what was taking place, everyone seemed to have accepted the fate of those who went missing. There were also some who may have known more than they let on. We also got a quick synopsis of the folklore linked to the forest, which added to the unsettling nature of this short story and the mysterious ending.

This was a quick . . . fun? read. Im not super sure fun can describe this terrifying book, but I mean that in the best way. The art and story line is so scary, I loved it.

A spooky read full of myths and legends. Has beautiful artwork and I hope the story continues, I'd love to see where it goes

I received an eARC of this graphic novel from Mad Cave Studios. I enjoyed the story and the lore in this graphic novel, but it left me wanting a lot more. The lead up to the story was good, and the development of the main character and the town lore was as well. At some point it seemed like I missed out on something, like there could be a chapter or two missing from the book. I'm conflicted on the art because I largely enjoyed it, but I personally didn't care for the face illustrations. That said, the forest was creepy and got creepier as the story progressed which was exactly what the cover promiseed! I'd love to see more from this world and from Ennun Ana Iurov. They clearly have a solid story to tell, and I would love to see more Romanian lore from them.

Thank you NetGalley and Mad Cave Studios for a copy of Whisper of the Woods!

"In search of his missing friend, Adam travels to the heart of Romania's most supernatural forest, Hoia Baciu. Disregarding the local's warnings of iele hunting the men in the vicinity, and the witch's premonition of his impending death, he remains steadfast in his decision to find his friend. Though with every passing night, it becomes impossible to ignore the happenings around him..."

Whisper of the Woods introduces readers to Hoia Forest and Romanian folklore. Great for those interested in exploring other folklore stories and those who love to hike/camp and wanna scare themselves a little this October lol. I did find the graphic novel too short, so I hope there's a second volume to help develop the story a little. Overall, great art style and perfect, light horror read.

The art is fantastic and the story is a classic folk horror tale - beware the entities and spirits and the forest.
It wasn't particularly new or exciting fare and the ending's climax was somewhat lackluster, but Iurov did a great job with a classic. I would happily read more of their work.

I loved this book...what there was of it. I'm only giving three stars because it felt like I was reading the preview for a longer work, and not a finished piece. I really loved the story, but would have loved to see more character development and suspense building.

This is a story set in Transylvania, Romania, with a lore about something in the woods that takes men and they never come back.

I initially got interested in that synopsis because I like dark and supernatural stories, so I'm always interested in this sort of things. I wish it would have been longer. There's not a lot you can add to less than 90 pages but I really liked the concept of it. It's not as horror as they make it out to be but definitely a lot more mystery and I'm honestly here for either. I love a good mystery just as much as a good horror. As I said, the idea of the story was very interesting but it could and should have been longer to dive deeper into the lore of it and get a bit more information on the characters but other than that a solid graphic novel novella.

This graphic novel had impressive art and the story was captivating enough for a middle grade book. I enjoyed reading alongside the art which was a bonus to the atmosphere of the story. Overall, it was nice to read.

Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and author for the free copy of this book!

I enjoyed reading it. It's short and interesting but more mystery than horror, unfortunately, it didn't make me feel the horror part. Also, the text is too small for me maybe make it a little bigger. The art and color are nice, overall. I hope there's a continuation of this so we could know more about the lore.

Thank you to Mad Cave Studios and Netgalley for giving me an earc of this!

I did not enjoy this book much. It appeared to be all over the place, and honestly was too short to be very marketable. It felt like the equivalent of a short story in graphic novel form, but there was really not reason to root for a single character or plot point. The twist kind of came out of nowhere, and not in a good way, since it maybe took me twenty minutes to read, which is much too short for any sort of attachment or shock to be made. Also, I am docking another star because the art style really disengaged me as a reader.

This was a read that is out of my comfort zone. The illustrated novella had a good concept but lacked in the story.
I found the ending a bit confusing, The illustrations were good but I wish the story had a bit more depth or was longer. I enjoyed the lore/legend aspect and wish there was a bit more on that. I also hoped it would be creepier. Overall, I would recommend reading it for something quick but it isn't something I'd read again. I was lucky enough to read this for free and this is my honest review.

The art is good. The story is basic and short.
I suppose the middle grade would like the story, though the nudity would be excluded.

This is a cute but mysterious graphic novella that I read in under twenty minutes. The art style was gorgeous too!

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read the ARC of Whispers in the Woods for a review. I enjoyed this graphic novel. I really liked the art style I think it captured my attention and held my interest along with the story. The last half really took me by surprise! Definitely creepy! Solid 3/5 stars.

The horror genre is certainly not my usual BUT the cover called to me.
And I didn’t realise it was an illustrated story, pleasant surprise!!
We are exposed to some legend and local lore, as well as the language.
What I quite enjoyed was the author didn’t make a point of translating every little bit into English, because between the parts in English and the visuals there was no lack of understanding.
If anything, the parts in Romanian made the story so much more immersive and intense.
The story was great, we have our main character travelling to Romania in search of his missing friend. A foreigner ignoring the warnings of the locals, thinking he knows better.
The story is short, but with the intense story and the extremely expressive illustration style, it packs a punch!
Id give this 3.5 stars
