Thank you NetGalley. Byron was going to catch the Dover Mail Coach, but just missed it as he comes across Nancy who has just put her sister on the coach and now decides she will go with Byron to catch the coach if her sister is in danger. They travel together toward Dover but he does not tell her he is a duke. They become attached to each other on the way. He tells her my he is after the Glasshand Gang and they are very dangerous. He wants to catch them very much.
The Duke’s Quest
Byron has a mission. He does not want the stubborn lady to join him on his quest. However, Nancy is as determined as she is. As the two chase the mail coach to catch a dangerous gang and save the people on it, they fall in love. However, they both have secrets. What happens when all is revealed? What occurs when they catch up to the mail coach? This is an entertaining historical romance. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to those who like this genre.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
This is book 4 of the Dukes in Danger series, and a play obviously on the Stitch in time saves nine saying. In this one, a side character and his obsession from previous books takes center stage - Byron Renwick, the Duke of Sedley is coming within reach of his long time vow to bring down the Glasshand Gang. They are a group of dangerous criminals and thieves who have caused a great deal of chaos and harm to others, including the death of Byron's father years prior - he has vowed to take them down, and also has a deeply kept secret ab0ut them. His vow has been a long term obsession of his, and has been trying to work with other authorities to bring them down.
He finally gains a bit of forehand knowledge about their plans to take down one of the mail coaches on the way to Devon and when he cannot get others on board with capturing them, he takes off by himself with one groom to do what he can to prevent the crime, just missing the coach on one of it's stops.
In his single mindedness, he crashes into a young woman who has just bid goodbye to her sister, a passenger on said coach. Anne Mead, Nancy to her friends, is the eldest sister to only remaining family, her brother and sister. Their brother has been a missing in France, and has just bid goodbye to her sister who is traveling to France in hopes of finding him - the younger sister, Beth, persuaded Nancy she is the better choice as her language skills are stronger, and Nancy is the only one with work at present time, as they are impoverished gentry.
When Byron inadvertently relays the danger the coach passengers are in to Nancy, she forces her company on Byron, to help save her sister. However, both Byron and Nancy, being strangers, do not confide in each other, so Nancy does not know Byron's identity as Duke, and his background, and he does not know her sister is on the coach.
This is a forced proximity romance, and chase adventure. There is rather heavy references to the theme - there being nine passengers on the coach, and in terms of the meaning of the original phrase I suspect, as there is lost time, and chaos as Nancy and Byron fly in pursuit of the endangered coach. I like the author, but I do find at times that she can be a bit heavy handed with the themes (such as when she did the 12 days of Christmas themes in one series). On saying that, I quite liked the dynamic of Nancy and Byron. Even though there is the implied tension of them being strangers, lacking trust, chasing after a known criminal gang, the two characters had a good dynamic and there was some fun and humour they found with each other, as well as attraction. Nancy proved to be quite distracting to Byron, and he began to lose focus in what was a single minded obsession for years. He became intrigued by her boldness and bravery, as well as her love and loyalty to her family. As their closeness and attraction grows, we also find out another secret about Byron, which I thought was a sweet aspect to their relationship. I guess when one is obsessed with a goal like Byron was, one pushes aside other less important aspect of life, such as carnal pleasures, because our hero is also a virgin hero! And as our two virgin mains become closer, we have some sweet steamy action as well, that I felt was nicely written.
All in all, a fast paced and enjoyable read that, though heavy on the stitch in time saves nine theme, I quite enjoyed, with two main characters that had good dialogues and dynamic.
3.75 stars out of 5
As a fan of regency romance, I was definitely the target audience for this book, so overall I did enjoy it. I found it to be a touch cheesy, but really loved the main characters. Worth a read if you're looking to expand your options for romance in this time period!
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.
Byron Renwick, Duke of Sedley, only thinks about stopping the Glasshand Gang who killed his father, and destroyed his brother. Hellbent on revenge, he chases the Dover mail coach, but not alone. Miss Anne Mead, Nancy to her friends, has been both sister and parent to her younger brother and sister since their parents deaths. When Matthew is injured and missing in France, Nancy puts younger sister Beth on the mail coach, hoping she will be able to find their brother and return home safely. However, Nancy overhears Byron state that all those on the coach are at risk by the Glasshand Gang, and stows away with him. Initially angry with each other, they soon find a camaraderie in the face of adversity. But Byron is hiding the fact he is a duke, and Nancy is struggling to hide her growing feelings.
I've really been enjoying this series, and this book was no different. Byron and Nancy both had big responsibilities on their hands, and though both were from the ton, Byron was not seen as a respectable Duke, and Nancy's family fell from grace when their father lost their fortune. They were so well matched for each other, though this did bring its own problems. They bickered like an old married couple from the moment they met, and it was hilarious to see how pigheaded each of them could be. I did wish that they were both more open about themselves and their families, but I understood that reticence to be vulnerable. The climax of the story was great, and I can see that it is helping to set the stage for book 5.
This book will keep you laughing with just the right amount of romance and 'adult'. Murdoch tells an adventure you will never forget. So much fun!
This is the fourth installment of the Dukes in Danger series. I have enjoyed the previous books thus far, and this one also did not disappoint. The premise of the story was unique and interesting. A Duke, Byron, racing against time to save nine people on a mail coach against the attack of a notorious gang. Anne's sister is on that mail coach, and there was no way she wasn't going to accompany Byron in his efforts to save everyone. And thus they set out on an adventure as virtually strangers, and in the process embark on a budding relationship. The dialogue and banter between them was a lot of fun to read and their mutual teasing was cute!
The story is well-written and captivating and pulls you in right from the start. I liked how the characters were well-developed and I became invested in their story from the beginning. The storyline had a nice flow and the plot twists kept me turning the pages. The story has a nice combination of romance, drama, and intrigue and it was a very entertaining and enjoyable story. I can't wait for the next installment!
I received a complimentary copy from Dragonblade Publishing and Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This book is a bit of a period 'road trip' and it was surprisingly entertaining. Emily Murdoch rarely lets her readers down and A Duke in Time achieves the standard. Nancy is our heroine, although I was momentarily confused when she introduced herself to Byron as Anne? Anyway, our hero needs to apprehend a notorious gang of highway robbers and has it on good authority that this particular coach will be held up, and he means to be on it. Byron has a lot on his mind and he misses the said coach resulting in his meeting our heroine who has just left her beloved sister on the coach. And so begins the chase. I really enjoyed this book although Nancy/Anne takes a while to warm to, she is spiky! Overall I recommend reading this book even if the previous ones in the series have not been read. My thanks to Dragon blade for excellent editing and Netgalley for the chance to read this advance copy.
It's a mad rush to save nine passengers on the mail coach to Dover. Byron Renwick, Duke of Sedley, has to stop the Glasshand Gang and arrest them by himself. Is he crazy or not? Nancy demands to go with him to save her sister. It's several days for Nancy and Byron get to know each other. It's their first kiss that changes everything. Can he trust his secrets to the only lady that will have his heart? A little slow on the pace even though they're in a rush. It comes across Byron is not the usual arrogant duke and you'll find out why later in book. Mild descriptive open bedroom door.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Byron Renwick, Duke of Sedley vowed vengeance on the Glasshand Gang and will not rest until he brings them to justice.
Anne Mead took responsibility for her siblings even before her parents died. Now they are both in terrible danger. She will do anything to rescue them.
This historical romance is filled with adventure and excitement. Our hero definitely needs our heroine's organised mind more than he knows.
Wonderful story that is part of a series of stand alone reads.
Great fun.
If you love a road trip romance, this might be for you.
This was a miss for me. I just couldn’t connect with the main characters. I found the hero always spacing out to be annoying.
I did like the plot just sadly this was a miss for me because of the MC’s.
A Duke in Time Saves Nine by Emily EK Murdoch
GO OUT AND GRAB THIS BOOK! It's so good, I literally read this 3 times, there were moments I couldn't put it down and I want to relive the scene many times. Amazing!
A Duke in Time Saves Nine
Book #4
by Emily EK Murdoch
Filled with sass, laughter and sizzling romance, This is my firat book ive read in this series, its book 4, so i will be going back to read the ones i missed in Dukes in Danger series.
Hang in there, a little difficult, I did put it down, but it's so worth reading.
Byron, Duke of Sedley, meets his match in the feisty almost motherly Miss Nancy Mead, whos siblings are her charge, as they race across country to intercept the Glasshand Gang at Dover, where Byon is on a mission and she wants to rescue her loved one.
I received this book for an honest review
A race against time adventure!
I loved the premise of this tale. A race against time, on the road, adventure to save nine people from a notorious gang of thieves and thugs. Where the back stories of our leads radiated intrigue, bred secrets that cut deep, made them weary and in theory perfect for each other.
Close proximity romance is one of my favorite troupes, I love the banter, mixed signals, yearnful stares and heady build up of sexual attraction - that they try so desperately to rein in - as two strangers are forced, for propriety sake, to pretend to be married. However, I'm afraid this just felt a little flat for me. I'm so sorry for saying that as it had so much potential to be amazing.
Ultimately, I never once felt the urgency and need to push forward or felt they were making any real attempt to catch the mail coach or head it off as the pace seemed a bit sedate. Plus, for the life of me, I found it so difficult to warm and connect with the heroine. Which was such a shame as I really came to love, the lost and innocent in so many ways, Bryon. Befuddling and bumbling his way forward, yet with such a deeply compassionate and steadfast caring side that gave him purpose and sparked moments of dominance, I very much enjoyed. I'm afraid their chemistry just didn't ring believable for me as a result.
Anne aka Nancy, had many amiable qualities, a risk it all drive to save her sister with a boldness to achieve her goal at all cost. Mixed with an I won't be ignored or dismissed attitude yet her very high handedness, which I have loved so often in many in the past, just kept rubbing me up the wrong way in her, manifesting as a bit too preachy as she never really compromised, did a lot of demanding and constantly ran hot and cold.
That said, I really did enjoy the previous book in the series and will definitely be checking out the next as there was so many moments here that I did enjoy, that admitted a real warmth and pulled me in I'm afraid it just wasn't Nancy!
Byron Renwick, Duke of Sedley, has chased the Glasshand Gang since they killed his father. He knows the coach they will strike. Unfortunately, the coach leaves without him. He bumps into Anne Mead, Nancy, and tells her the coach is in danger. Her sister is on the coach. Now the Glasshand Gang has a duke bent on revenge and a sister determined to save her sister on their trail. Byron and Nancy are off on a dangerous adventure and an exciting journey to love. This is a story with wonderful characters, lots of snarky banter, secrets, some surprises, and a sizzling romance. Entertaining and enjoyable.
I received ab ARC of this book via NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
I have been really liking this series and this has been my favorite so far! Who wouldn't like a long adventure by coach to confront a notorius gang. Oh and traveling with a stranger.
I really liked the budding romance between Nancy and Byron. I appreciated her boldness (well she didn't know he was a Duke) and his honor. They definitely did a lot of teasing eachother, but just clicked. Oh the poor Duke doing a lot of couch sleeping.
This book kept me entertained since I read it in one sitting! I can't wait for the next book.
Thank you to Dragonblade and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.
Byron Renwick, Duke of Sedley, is a man on a mission, which is why he finds himself chasing after a mail coach in the dead of night with a mysterious and rather beautiful passenger. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. After discovering the Glasshand Gang’s plans to rob a mail coach, Byron was determined to catch them in the act and bring them to justice. Anne Mead has just put her darling younger sister on that mail coach and won’t take no for an answer from the strange gentleman who seems to know the nine people on that coach are now risking their lives. She tells him in no uncertain terms: Anne is going with him. Together, they’ll save her sister. But secrets on both sides threaten to surface in their race against time, as Byron keeps his title and more to himself, and Anne resists spilling the truth about her family.
The fourth book in the series & it’s easily read on its own. A well written captivating read, the characters are well portrayed & the pace is fast. I really liked Byron but had more difficulty liking Anne. I did love the witty banter between the couple & liked the slow burn romance. The chase is thrilling & takes several days, which means the main characters have plenty of time to get to know each other, there are secrets, revelations & two people gradually falling in love. A very enjoyable romance
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This is my third Emily E.K. Murdoch historical romance this year and I have been enjoying her books immensely. Her first one that I read, Strike While the Duke is Hot, still remains to be my favorite installment, but the others are still pretty high quality. A Duke in Time Saves Nine was a rip-roaring, high speed adventure. Our couple is unexpectedly paired together as they chase a runaway mail coach filled with bandits. This book was filled with adventure, but it failed to deliver on the romance. The heroine was very prissy and deflected romantic attempts at every turn.
A Duke in Time Saves Nine was a thrilling book, but I wouldn't fully market this as a romance. The heroine rebuffed the hero's attempts at every opportunity. She made him sleep on the floor when there was only bed at the inn and she kept sending him mixed signals. It was frustrating as a reader because what's the point of including the Only One Bed Trope if your characters reject it? Very rarely do I see books accept this motif and turn into something positive. We eventually had our hero make a move near the end of the book and it was a surprising turn of events. He was both a virgin and brought protection. I was surprised and applauded the author for including these elements because they rarely happen in historical romances. I was really drawn to the hero, but felt like the heroine ran hot and cold as if she were a human water tank. Make up your mind, cupcake!
A Duke in Time Saves Nine was lots of fun, but I was left wanting more from our couple. I thought gallivanting across the English countryside with a handsome stranger was a great plot, but that can only take the story so far. I will continue to read this author because I like her writing and her first book was one of the best things I've read this year. Her unique plotlines and well written characters always keep me coming back for more. Always look twice for speeding carriages because they may or may not be trying to save nine other people.
This story was so forced and manipulated. It did not feel spontaneous or natural in any way. I had only read the first few chapters and I had to many red flags written down.
This review may contain spoilers.
The story opens with a duke, the hero, waiting in a magistrate's house to speak with him. Well, first of all, the hero is a DUKE, and should never wait on anyone. I did not like the way the duke was treated by people under him. They should have been acquiescent and subservient and they treated the hero as if he was a child. How are we to believe that the hero is a duke when the people who should be bowing and scraping before him are treating him like yesterday's news? And the story continued in the same vein.
The heroine is a woman from a good family that had fallen on hard times.she and her siblings have had to eke out an existence on the periphery of society. She can't take a job or earn a wage because she is a lady, so she transcribes music for a fee. The heroine had a normal name, "Anne", and a nickname, "Nancy", that her family used. This is fine, but pick one. That author used the names interchangeably for the first half of the book, the used the family name the rest of the book. Which was very confusing, because she had been introduced as "Anne" in the beginning, so I always looked for that name as I read. (And how is "Nancy" a nick name for "Anne" anyway? And she answers to both. Is she a spy?)
Part of this story is how the duke wants to bring a gang of thieves to justice. We do not find out why until near the end of the story, but all through the story, when he thinks of his reason, he suffers an emotional attack, similar to PTSD. But the reader does not find out why until close to the end, and then we are lead to believe that the heroine spontaneously cures his PTSD by her love for him.
The story continues when the hero has received secret information twice, from whom we never learn, of the future plans of the gang. It tells him they will attack the Dover Mail Coach. He arrives at the inn to realize that the Coach is leaving while he is arriving. He is talking to himself that everyone on board is doomed and he stumbles over a lady. She hears him and climbs into his carriage because she has a "valuable possession" on board. So we are to believe, that a lady climbs into an unknown man's carriage in order to chase the coach that just left. And then she never tells him what the "possession" is. If she doesn't trust him enough to tell him what is is, then why would she trust him enough to climb into his carriage and refuse to leave it and force herself in him?
This story does not make sense. The author has the characters talking and then each one would repeat the conversation in their heads. This happens again and again throughout the book. I have not seen this before and I do not need to have a conversation that I just read and is not pivotal repeated two more times. I have other red flags that came up, but I will say that this story does not read very well, it has a very shallow and weak premise, the main characters relationship feels forced and unnatural, and the plot is very formulamatic.
I give this book 1 star and do not recommend reading.
Byron Renwick, Duke of Sedley, is hunting the Glasshand Gang for he promised his father. Only three people know why. When he gets the news that they will be attacking the Dover mail coach, off he goes.
Anne Nancy Mead, sister Beth and brother Matthew are her responsibility since they were born. As they have grown it is hard to let that responsibility go. Matthew is in the Army fighting in France. Beth and Nancy both believe he is lost and hurt since they have not heard from him. So it was agreed Beth would go to France to find him as she speaks it better.
With his vow to stop the Glasshand Gang, Bryon goes to board the Dover mail coach only to stare at it stunned and then miss getting on. When he bluffs out that they are in danger, it is with Nancy right there after putting her sister on the coach. Pushing her way into Bryan's coach they take off after the Diver mail coach.
Join the madcap jaunt through villages in England as these two chase the mail coach! Visit towns and learn who they really are. The witty sarcasm from Nancy will have you thinking"mom, really"!! Poor Bryon has no clue how he could have allow this to happen but takes it in stride.
As they get to know one another, it is the sizzle, spark, and understanding of the other that makes this such a great story and couple. Most of the story takes place in the carriage but when they are at the different inns it brings out a new side to them each time.
